Design for Realistic Didactics of Sociology in Secondary Education

    No full text
Sociology’s precariousness in Greek secondary education has hindered the development of a didactic methodology for this course. Such an effort presupposes a reflection on the peculiarities of this subject. The only theoretical approach to the teaching of sociological concepts in the context of a school course is provided by G. Kouzelis. This article discusses and critiques this approach. Instead of an abstract epistemological teaching, we propose a realistic teaching of sociology aimed at the cognitive and moral development of student\u27s personality

Του λόγου το αληθές αποδεικνύoυν τα αποτελέσματα της πειραματικής έρευνας που πραγματοποιήσαμε σε δυο σχολεία της Αμφιλοχίας τα σχολικά έτη 2016-2018.Learning spelling in the greek primary school, a definitively difficult task, is not properly achieved by following the teaching methods which have been used until today. But if we introduce alternative teaching methods that make learning fun, the results can be much better. The results of the experimental research we carried out in two primary schools in Amfilochia during the school years 2016-18 indicate the truth of the hypothesis

In this paper, a research is conducted concerning the application and promotion of Critical Literacy in the Greek Primary school through the teaching of multimodal texts via ICT applications. A very important conclusion of the research was the great importance of the promotion and integration of students\u27 critical literacy through the analysis of multimodal texts in the Greek Language course of the 6th Grade of the Greek Primary School (9th chapters &17th textbook chapters). Through the analysis of the texts it was found that there is some improvement from the past, but there are also considerable shortcomings. The researcher concluded that through socio-semiotic consideration many new possibilities arouse within the framework of multimodal teaching, especially in countries such as Greece, where - as a host country for immigrants - culturally or linguistically different populations aspire to learn literacy as a necessity through the challenges of the 21st century, contrary to traditional literacy approaches

During the second wave of the pandemic, teachers were forced to offer synchronous distance learning courses without the required multidimensional reinforcement. Based on the experience gained from the first wave of the pandemic, teachers started the new project with satisfactory readiness, making special efforts to provide the necessary digital support and to adapt the teaching material accordingly. Teachers did not face significant problems with the use of this platform, however, they express remarkable reservations about the absence of the proper pedagogical atmosphere. Teachers’ hasty involvement in providing synchronous distance learning, seems to contribute to the improvement of their digital maturity, although it did not convince them that it is beneficial to be incorporated into the conventional teaching practice. Many factors such as gender, age and job experience play a crucial role on the findings as it was showed by the statistical analysis. The results of the study justify the belief that due to the pandemic, a tendency of strengthening the digital dimension of the Greek public school was established. The digital skills background that has been developed, must be utilized by the stateholders in the context of the continuing training of teachers

Psychological dependence and freedom in the Gambler of Dostoevsky: a philosophical analysis

    No full text
IN THE philosophical field of moral psychology and in the contemporary debate on the problem of free will, examples of psychological dependence play an important role. In the Gambler, Dostoevsky focuses on the phenomenon of psychological dependence which, given the philosophical significance of his overall work, makes this novel particularly suitable for philosophical analysis. In my paper, I draw on Plato’s tripartition of the soul in the Republic, on the one hand, and on contemporary philosophical theories regarding free will, on the other, and I attempt to investigate the conditions under which psychological dependence in Dostoevsky may be viewed as an expression of freedom. In particular, I employ Gary Watson’s compatibilist model of free will, which focuses on the relation between values and desires. The latter along with Dostoevsky’s own ‘theory’ of freedom in Notes from Underground provide me with the relevant background for determining the kind of freedom I ascribe to the Gambler. And, although in Watson’s model itself psychological dependence counts as a paradigmatic case of a lack of freedom, I maintain that its application in the Gambler leads –paradoxically– to the opposite conclusion.IN THE philosophical field of moral psychology and in the contemporary debate on the problem of free will, examples of psychological dependence play an important role. No full text
In recent years there has been an escalating research interest in academic procrastination in the areas of educational and counseling psychology. This research paper focuses on the investigation of perfectionism and passive aggressiveness as mediating factors in the relationship between academic procrastination and perceived parental acceptance-rejection (PARTheory). Thirty ninety nine (n=399) students from Universities and Technological Institutions from all over the country participate in this research. Procrastination, parental acceptance-rejection, perfectionism, and passive aggressiveness are explored with respect to the following scales (after proper adaptation to the Greek reality): Procrastination Assessment Scale-Students, The Parental Acceptance- Rejection, Almost Perfect Scale-Revised and the Defense Style Questionnaire subscale referring to passive aggressiveness. The evaluation of the symptoms of psychopathology is investigated through the Brief Symptom Inventory. PROCESS analysis is used to investigate the relationship between the variables that were studied. Mediation analysis reveals that perfectionism is partly mediated by the relationship between paternal rejection and procrastination, while it does not mediate the relationship between maternal rejection and academic procrastination. Furthermore, findings also reveal that passive aggressiveness plays a mediating role in the relationship between paternal and maternal rejection and academic procrastination. The specific findings are discussed according to literature

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are characterised by difficulties in social communication and social interaction alongside unusually restricted, repetitive behaviour and interests. IQ. High-functioning individuals with autism have average or higher intelligence. The lack of intellectual disability does not mean, though, that they can simply overcome inherent social difficulties; they typically struggle to communicate effectively in a neurotypical world, manage daily tasks and survive at workplaces. They are at increased risk of having medical, developmental or psychiatric conditions. The present article examines a less researched issue, how high functioning persons with autism experience middle and old age. Their trajectories into these periodsof life are discussed with reference to  factors such as physical health, anxiety and other mental health disorders, brain functioning and health, psychological resilience and social support. The issue of autism diagnosis during later stages of life is also considered. The article concludes with a synopsis of the above, as well as with the discussion of some wider ideas and suggestions

Ritual and Politics, Individual and Community in Plutarch’s Works: The Life of Nicias as a test-case

THE FIRST part of this report offers a selective update on research involving both a research seminar and an international colloquium that I co-organized with Frances B. Titchener at Rethymnon in 2017, whereas the second offers a sample of my own research on the subject. The purpose of the 2017 colloquium (27–30 April) and the graduate seminar that Frances Titchener and I team-taught along with other faculty members at Rethymnon during the spring-term of that year was to explore ritual in Plutarch’s works by asking a series of questions, specifically: how Plutarchan representations of rituals contribute to the characterization of individuals and/or communities? What do they tell us about the way individuals relate to their peers or to their community at large and/or the ways cities or other forms of community relate to one another? How do rituals interact with politics (personal and communal, local and inter-state)? How do they affect individual and communal identities? The second part explores Plutarch’s representation of Nicias’ exploitation of the performative and communicative nature of ritual as it emerges from four key episodes: (a) his decision to free one of his servants in the theatre of Dionysus on the spur of the moment; (b) his innovative improvement on the Athenian theoria to Delos as architheoros; (c) his striking provision to worship the Delian god(s) in perpetuity and (d) his daily private sacrifice and divination at home in Athens. Taking into account the persistent emphasis on Nicias’ fear of gods and men throughout the Life, it is argued that these four episodes show that ritual offered Nicias an outlet for coping with his fear of men without abandoning his political ambitions.THE FIRST part of this report offers a selective update on research involving both a research seminar and an international colloquium that I co-organized with Frances B. University graduates’ work course during the economic crisis in Greece: the case of Philosophy and Social Studies graduates

    No full text
THIS piece of research deals with our graduates at the Department of Philosophy and Social Studies, University of Crete. We observe their work course in the Greek labour market during the economic crisis. They have graduated between 2012 and 2016 and, 2 to 6 years after graduation they were asked about their work experiences. In the past, University of Crete Humanities seniors had replied to us (for a piece of research of ours) that they were optimistic about finding employment in their subject, despite the high unemployment rates. They were also confident about their social capital. Later, in another research of ours, teachers who worked in shadow education in Greece during the economic crisis, eloquently described the labour market mechanisms through which their work and payment conditions deteriorated significantly during that crisis. For this piece of research, we now focus on our department (Philosophy and Social Studies) graduates. We have sought feedback from them about their employment after graduation. We aim at examining their work experiences, not only out of interest in our former students, but also as an attempt to display the utilization of their studies in the labour market.THIS piece of research deals with our graduates at the Department of Philosophy and Social Studies, University of Crete.
