A philosophically-minded “Lucullus” or an ascetic: the misconception of Epicurean hedonism
For Epicurus pleasure is the goal of our life. But not every kind of pleasure. It is a particular kind of pleasure that represents this goal, namely lack of both bodily pain (aponia) and mental distress (ataraxia). But accepting this Epicurean suggestion leads us to the following questions: what kind of life is the Epicurean one? Does Epicurus suggest that we should live an ascetic way of life or that we should enjoy pleasure regardless of its source?
According to my proposal the answer to both these questions is negative. Epicurean attitude towards luxury turns out to be rather different from outright rejection, and a closer examination of this feature of his ethical stance may shed some broader light on his view of pleasure, its relation to desire, and its role in our lives. In order to elaborate this suggestion, I will follow three steps. Firstly, I will present the Epicurean classification of desires. Secondly, I will explain the two mutually exclusive interpretations of the Epicurean attitude towards luxury and simplicity. Thirdly, I will suggest that there is a place for both luxury and simplicity in the life of the Epicurean Sage. For Epicurus pleasure is the goal of our life. But not every kind of pleasure. Aivali figures: Kontoglou’s popular sanctorale before the cursed persecution
Kontoglou offers in his works literary descriptions of views of his native city, Aivali, in Asia Minor, definitively lost for him after the cruel persecution that followed the tragic events of 1922. He also delivers a number of literary renditions of representative figures of its habitants. These written depictions, beyond the superficial allure of art naïf that they reflect at first sight, reveal a deep philosophical, aesthetic and emotional view of Kontoglou’s country and compatriots, of his beloved Orient. Through these portraits which are aligned with the art of rhetorical byzantine descriptions known as Ekphrasis, Kontoglou describes in a very personal and emotional way, his countrymen in order to present them to his readers as sanctified figures of his own mystic sacred paradise; the saints he created converge by their various characteristics, both corporeal and moral, to one original identity: the Homo Orientis.Kontoglou offers in his works literary descriptions of views of his native city, Aivali, in Asia Minor, definitively lost for him after the cruel persecution that followed the tragic events of 1922. Greek-Turkish idylls in Greek literature after the Asia Minor Disaster: desire, love, even weddings
In this article, I focus on how Greek-Turkish love relationships develop in the field of Greek literature, from the Asia Minor Disaster to the present day. Initially, the complete discrediting of the other, the Turkish man, is dominant. He is presented as lustful and beastly, while the Turkish woman is presented as good because she is willing to change her identity (Sokr. Prokopiou, Pandelis Kapsis). Soon, already in the 1930’s, we have a disruption of clean lines (G. Ionicos), then an equality in barbarism, a mutual mixing of hatred and lust in war (G. Theotokas), and a little later an equality of tenderness, but in relationships that remained evasive (Lambis Volanakis, Vassos Arendas).
A first marriage takes place, with terrible regrets, in a text written during the Nazi Occupation, but referring to the years just before the Catastrophe (Tatiana Stavrou). Forty years after the Catastrophe, in the sexually liberated 60’s, a sexual encounter is presented in detail, but it is not accompanied by deep love on the part of the Greek man, while the Turkish woman, who is much more interested in the relationship, is again willing to partly change identity (Dido Sotiriou). Marriage also occurs forty years after the Catastrophe, but the young man turns out to be of mixed identity, from a Christian mother, and the union is made in favour of the Greek element, since the young man agrees to be baptized (Elias Venezis).
In the 21st century we are led (mainly through best-selling literature, but not only) to mutually passionate love relationships and to eternal loves, which, if in the generation of the events of the Catastrophe cannot be realized, reach a happy ending in the third generation (Kat. Zarokosta, K. Akrivos et al.). Sometimes, the descendants discover that common Greek-Turkish blood flows in their veins, so the relationship necessarily turns into a fraternal/family one. In the centenary of the Catastrophe there is a formula –through the diffusion of the heroes in the big world– so that even those who experienced the tragic events can finally live their love together (Maria Eliou). This is how Greek-Turkish friendship seems to be solemnly ratified, following certainly the triumph of political correctness in a literature of good intentions. In this article, I focus on how Greek-Turkish love relationships develop in the field of Greek literature, from the Asia Minor Disaster to the present day. The findings are discussed in the context of career guidance and career counseling and a framework for counseling intervention is proposed
The Profile of the Protagonists of Workplace Bullying in Education- Emotions
Bullying is a global phenomenon of research interest. The present research aims to give voice to the protagonists. Particular emphasis is placed on the witness or observer of workplace bullying, their emotions and their role. Therefore, the technique of semi-structured interviews was chosen using the qualitative methodology to collect data and thematic analysis to investigate it. The sample consisted of twenty (20) teachers from different schools of N. Heraklion, Crete. The results showed that "bullying" as a phenomenon prevails in education. Numerous factors influence and influence its manifestation: working conditions etc.The victim\u27s profile mainly recognizes teachers who differ for some characteristic element (little experience in schools etc) and the perpetrator\u27s profile: “teachers leaders”, the “new teachers” and an informal group. Three categories fit the observer profile of the observer: the active, the passive and the seemingly apathetic. The dynamic interaction can determine the course of evolution of the phenomenon
Fostering Creative Writing through Literature Classes in Primary Education
Creative Writing, in a playful manner, aims to stimulate creativity, imagination, authenticity, and self-reflection in written expression. This study examines its cultivation through Literature classes, as they focus on lived experience and subtle nuances of life, enhancing students\u27 emotional awareness and utilization of imagination. The research framework indicates that Creative Writing significantly boosted students\u27 motivation and interest in writing; however, further training of educators is deemed necessary to enhance their competence and confidence in teaching it
Developing bilingual readers\u27 reading strategies using educational drama methodologies: an experimental study
The aim of this experimental study is to investigate the impact of drama-based instruction on the development of reading strategies used by bilingual student populations. The research design included pre-measurement of the reading strategies of two control groups and one experimental group of 388 total emergent bilingual students using a standardized scale, drama-based interventions lasting seven weeks, and post-measurement of reading strategies. The results of the study showed that reader\u27s theatre and storytelling theatre were successful methods for developing bilingual students\u27 strategic thinking on reading and showed large effect sizes and statistically significant differences in the use of cognitive, metacognitive, social, and affective strategies. The findings support the hypothesis that drama-based instruction can influence bilingual readers\u27 reading strategies and improve their use, especially in terms of metacognitive development
Giftedness in Education; pedagogical blessing or "racist" curse?
In addition to the classic and well-known issues concerning gifted children and their treatment at school -which, however, are constantly expanding, as new research data emerges- the debate on giftedness also includes issues such as why involvement with gifted children is necessary, whether or not these children should be included in the category of "special children", but also how likely it is that there is any racist dimension in the discrimination of children in gifted and non-gifted ones. In this bibliographic paper, after a brief theoretical presentation of the main aspects of the issue, based on current scientific research, a thorough argumentation on the above issues is sought after, so that giftedness in Education is treated as comprehensively and -mainly- as effectively as possible
