The Journal of Quranic Studies published by SOAS London University: The Question of Objectivity and Prejudice
Purpose: The Journal of Qur'anic Studies has been published in the King Fahd Chair of Islamic Studies since 1990 and is affiliated with the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of London: Oriental African school. This Study aims to familiarize the reader with this journal and its scientific importance, its impact in the academic field and the scientific enrichment it offers in the field of Quranic studies. The study also shows the extent to which the journal adheres to a neutral scientific approach in presenting contradictory views on the Quran and its Sciences by Muslim and Western researchers who publish in the journal.
Methodology: The researcher adopts both descriptive and inductive approach in the study of all the issues from 1999 to the date of the study in 2018. The published articles amounted to about 267 articles in Arabic, English and French. The author also relied on the analytical approach to study some of the articles presented by Muslims and Westerners.
Findings: This is an international scientific journal that has a significant weight and impact among researchers in the West in the field of Qur'anic studies. The journal includes solid and new study. Yet, this journal could not overcome or put a criteria that controls the problem of objectivity and bias. Thus, it sides with western writers opposed to Islam without taking into account the feelings and beliefs of Muslims under the pretext of neutrality, and does not raise topics critical of the Western approach that deals with the Holy Quran with a clear bias. The study recommends the need to establish an international scientific journal specialized in the Holy Quran and its Sciences, presenting the views of Muslims and fair Westerners in an unbiased scientific manner
Equating Test Forms for Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS 2011) in Sultanate of Oman Using Item Response Theory
The study aims to compare between true score of mixed item formats (dichotomous and polytomous items), using single group design and nonequivalent group with common items design. The study used PIRLS test, which consists of 146 items, (74 multiple-choice items and 72 short answer items), distributed over 13 booklets. Each booklet has common items with some other booklets and some uncommon items, as well as two passages: reading for literary experience and reading to acquire and use information. The 13 booklets were distributed to a random sample of 10394 students from grade 4 in the Sultanate of Oman. MULTILOG 7.03 software was used to estimate item and ability parameters using the graded response model and Poly Equate (V0.5) software. The 13 booklets were equated using true score equating and observed score equating. The results showed differences in the descriptive characteristics for the 13 booklets before equating, and reduction in these differences after equating with both equating methods. Paired samples t-test showed statistical significant differences between the two equating methods with all booklets towards the observed score equating except with booklet 10 where there are differences towards true score equating and booklets 4 and 5 where there is no statistical difference between the two equating methods
The Effectiveness of the Five E’s Learning Cycle in Rhetoric Achievement among Grade Ten Female Students in Oman
The present study aimed at investigating the effect of the use of the five E’s learning cycle on the achievement in rhetoric of 10th-grade female students. To achieve this aim, the researchers prepared a rhetoric test and a teacher guidebook to use the five E’s learning cycle in rhetoric lessons. An expert jury reviewed both instruments to test their validity. The reliability was also calculated and was found to be (0.76), using Cronbach’ Alpha. The sample of the study consisted of 60 female students divided into two groups; an experimental group consisting of 32 female students who were taught using the five E’s constructivist learning, and a control group that consisted of 28 female students who were taught by the conventional way. Then, a test in rhetoric was conducted for both groups after the intervention. Data analysis revealed that there is a statistically significant difference at (α≤0.05) level between the experimental group and the control group in favor of the experimental group attributed to the use of the five E’s learning cycle. Moreover, the results showed that there is a statistically significant difference at (α≤0.05) level between the experimental group and the control group in favor of the experimental group in the following levels: remembering, understanding, and applying. In light of these results, the researchers recommended training the teachers on new strategies in rhetoric and use the five E’s learning cycle in different Arabic Language skills

The Composition and Writing of the Qurʾān: Old Explanations and New Evidence
Purpose: This article takes up the view that the Qurʾān was left incomplete as a book and did not take final shape until well after the Prophet’s death. It considers whether this may be deemed valid upon analysis of a type of structural binding occurring in the text.
Methodology: The study takes an analytical and historical approach. It examines center-periphery connection between adjacent sūras in various phases of revelation (structural consistency would suggest a single source for the text, whereas inconsistency would imply multiple hands involved in editing). The study furthermore compares results with those from recent statistical and thematic studies.
Findings: The research highlights continuity. This accords with recent stylometric analysis of the text, which shows a coherent stylistic trajectory. It also accords with an examination of the theme of jihād in the Qurʾān, which reveals overall consistency and adherence to core principles.
Originality: This is the first study to disclose consistency of center-periphery connection in the Qurʾān, strengthening our appreciation of the text’s composition. Furthermore, insofar as this research helps us to perceive links between adjacent sūras, it could aid in textual interpretation. Finally, since the findings call into question the notion that the Qurʾān was arranged later, an updated hypothesis for the early writing and copying of the Qurʾān is presented, taking into account the existence of minor variations in the old codices, the reports about an ʿUthmānic commission issuing a standard text, and the fact that no prototype manuscript has been discovered
