Distributed Detecting of Critical Nodes for Maximization of Connected Components in Wireless Multi-hop Networks

    No full text

In Wireless Multi-hop Networks (WMhNs), nodes whose absence significantly weakens network connectivity or partitions the network into disconnected components are called critical nodes. This paper focuses on a critical node problem, the Maximizing the Number of Connected Components (MaxNum) problem, which aims to identify critical nodes whose removal maximizes the number of connected components. Although the MaxNum problem is a well-known NP-Hard problem with various real-world applications, no distributed algorithm has been proposed to solve it. To address this gap, we propose an efficient distributed algorithm for the MaxNum problem in WMhNs. The algorithm uses a distributed depth-first search tree to identify critical nodes, requiring a bit complexity of ( x x log2 ) and a space complexity of ( + ), where denotes the maximum node degree. We evaluated the proposed algorithm through simulations and testbed networks, comparing it to the Linear Programming (LP) approach. Our findings show that the proposed distributed algorithm achieves promising outcomes, reaching nearly 90% of the optimal solution while reducing data transmission to half of that required by the centralized LP.</p&gt

    No full text

Background/aim: The aim of the study was to analyze the genotype and phenotype characteristics of Turkish patients with a clinical diagnosis of Stargardt disease and to evaluate how collaboration between the departments of medical genetics and ophthalmology contributes to patient management.

Materials and methods: The clinical findings, genetic testing workflow in the medical genetics department, and the genetic testing results of patients clinically diagnosed with Stargardt disease in the ophthalmology department were retrospectively analyzed.

Results: The study included 50 patients from 46 families. The genetic test reports confirmed the clinical diagnosis of Stargardt disease type 1 (STGD1) in 27 patients (54%), led to revision of the clinical diagnosis in five patients (10%), and were inconclusive in 18 patients (36%). A total of 26 pathogenic ABCA4 variants were reported in 39 patients, three of which were novel: c.466_467dupAT, p.Leu157SerTer2; c.4540-1G>C; c.878delC, p.Met293SerfsTer7. The most recurrent ABCA4 variant was c.5882G>A, p.Gly1961Glu detected in 10 unrelated patients. Patients with biallelic severe ABCA4 variants or biallelic loss of function variants had an earlier age of ascertainment (p = 0.024 and p = 0.008, respectively). The mean interval between the referral of patients from the ophthalmology clinic and the first visit with the medical geneticist was 13.8 days, and the mean time to receive genetic test results with posttest counseling was 6.9 months after the first visit.

Conclusion: This study serves as a representative example of how genetic testing and a multidisciplinary approach can contribute to management of inherited eye diseases. It also reports three novel ABCA4 variants in Turkish patients with Stargardt disease and describes genotype–phenotype correlations. However, conducting multicenter studies with larger sample sizes from Türkiye will be essential to broaden the spectrum of ABCA4 variants and enhance our understanding of genotype–phenotype relationships.</p&gt

Solution combustion synthesis of zinc borate nanoparticles: Its flame-retardant properties

    No full text

The use of polymers is increasing rapidly, and the low-temperature flammabilities of natural and synthetic polymers are vital in a possible fire. The most effective method to retard combustion, prevent flame, suppress smoke, and reduce glare is the preparation of polymer composites using additives. In this study, environmentally friendly non-halogen zinc borate (Zn3B2O6) nanoparticles were synthesized by the solution combustion method, which is a time and energy-saving method, as a flame retardant, and the effects of fuel types and amounts were also investigated. The products were systematically characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and surface analyzer. The glycine was found to be a suitable fuel, and the glycine-assisted synthesized zinc borate has an 11.76 m2/g BET surface area, 66.45 & Aring; pore size, and 0.0195 cm3/g pore volume. The Zn3B2O6 with dimensions of approximately 20-30 nm were immobilized into the polyethylene and polypropylene via solvent mixing and melt mixer method, respectively. Both methods ensured homogeneous mixing, and adding Zn3B2O6 to the polymers delayed the combustion temperature. In addition, the effect of zinc borate with montmorillonite (MMT) on the thermal stability of polymers was investigated. It was seen that using zinc borate and MMT together led to increased decomposition temperatures in polypropylene polymers rather than polyethylene polymers. Based on the analysis, the types and combinations of additives affect the thermal stability of composites.</p&gt

Switchable solvent-based liquid phase microextraction of Sudan dyes in food and water samples with HPLC-DAD

    No full text

In this study, an environmentally friendly switchable hydrophilicity solvent (SHS) which is a hydrophilic N,Ndimethylbenzylamine carbonate compound in two forms, polar and non-polar, was used in liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME) before HPLC-DAD analysis to separate and preconcentrate Sudan I, Sudan II, Sudan III, and Sudan IV dyes from food and water samples. The optimization of the microextraction process was performed by studying the effects of various parameters such as pH, SHS volume, phase transition triggering agent volume, sonication, and centrifugation times. In this study, where 300 mu L SHS was used, LLME total analysis time was performed in 4.5 minutes with high recovery at pH 8.0. The SHS-LLME procedure's preconcentration factor is 50. This SHS-LPME method offers an environmentally friendly option for the extraction of Sudan dyes from food and water samples.</p&gt

Coupled thermo-elastic dynamics of rotating pre-twisted blades exposed to thermal shock including nonlinear rotational effects

    No full text

Rotating blades operating under high-temperature experience intense mechanical and thermal stresses induced by centrifugal forces and thermal shock. In this research, to address this critical yet understudied topic, coupled thermo-elastic dynamics of rotating blades incorporating precise rotational effects is investigated. A comprehensive modeling approach, characterizing blade geometry in terms of pre-twist and pre-set angles is employed based on the theory of surfaces. Thermal strain-displacement field is defined based on third-order shear deformation theory in the model integrated with a third-order expansion of temperature change distribution within the blade. Rotational factors related to Coriolis, centrifugal stiffening, and rotational softening effects are considered. In the case of stiffening effects, two different modeling approaches including direct integration of centrifugal forces (DICFs), and pre-stressed dynamics about steady-state equilibrium deformations (SSEDs) are employed. When incorporating large- amplitude SSEDs in the latter, nonlinear rotational effects are incorporated into the model. To overcome the complexity arising from coupled thermo-elasticity, and rotational motion, the spectral Chebyshev technique is applied to the derived integral boundary value problems and coupled energy equations. Finally, natural frequencies, and thermal and centrifugal deformations are investigated comprehensively by including DICFs and pre-stressed dynamics. Results show that thermo-elastic dynamics of the system is highly affected by the modeling approaches used for centrifugal stiffening effects.</p&gt

Post seismic groundwater quality investigation in aquifers following earthquake-induced demolition wastes: Hatay (Türkiye) case study

    No full text

The February 6, 2023 seismic sequence that hit, the Antakya district of Hatay (Türkiye), killed more than 50,000 people and caused extensive structural damages, resulting in the collapse of 80% of the building stock that generated over 100 million tons of debris. Understanding the impact of seismic events on water resources is highly important for ensuring human and environmental health. Herewith, a study was carried out over the Hatay area to assess the post-earthquake sustainable usability of groundwater for drinking, domestic, and irrigation purposes. 17 water points were investigated in September 2023, encompassing alluvial deposits with relatively high hydraulic conductivity as well as Miocene and Upper Cretaceous aged karstic limestone aquifers. Notably, six out the 17 water points were crucial sources for supplying post-seismic drinking water to Hatay city. The study aimed to evaluate major ion chemistry, heavy metals, endocrine disruptors, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and other possible pollutants that potentially infiltrated into the groundwaters after seismic events. Preliminary results indicated that none of the samples exceeds the allowable limits for endocrine disruptors, PAHs, PCBs, or VOCs, posing immediate threats. However, some of the wells and springs exploited for drinking purposes show concentrations higher than the international drinking water quality standards in terms of heavy metals, particularly iron and aluminum. These findings highlight the necessity for continuous water quality monitoring and the implementation of appropriate measures to ensure the sustainable use of groundwater for drinking purpose after any earthquake. This study emphasizes the critical importance of proactive management strategies to mitigate the impact of seismic events on groundwater quality and human-environmental health in earthquake-prone regions like Hatay, Türkiye.</p&gt

Kalkınma ve Sürdürülebilir Kentler: Kültürel Aktarım Aracı Olarak Müzelerin Rolü

    No full text
