Seamless Learning Journey: Exploring Digital Anatomical Experiences in Enriched Medical Education With Metaverse-Supported Virtual Cadaver

The difficulties experienced in accessing cadavers worldwide are increasing the demand for technology-supported solutions. Virtual cadavers can ensure continuity of education by providing students with the opportunity to explore and examine realistic anatomical structures in detail without any geographical or physical restrictions. In this context, the development of alternative methods such as augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) tools is of great importance for students to continue their education. In the current study, the effectiveness of a medical education model enriched through metaverse-supported virtual cadavers was examined in order to contribute to the seamless learning experience of students. Consistent with the aim of the study, the effects of this model on students' academic achievement, attitudes towards the course, and academic motivation were evaluated. The study adopted a mixed methodology incorporating qualitative and quantitative techniques. An achievement test, anatomy attitude scale, and academic motivation scale were employed as data collection instrument in the study. In addition, interviews were conducted with the students in the experimental group to examine their experiences with virtual cadavers in the metaverse environment in depth. This study was conducted with the participation of 110 first-year medical students studying at a state university in Türkiye. Within the scope of the study, the students were divided into two groups as experimental and control groups. Although the control group followed the traditional anatomy curriculum, the experimental group performed some activities on virtual cadaver models in the metaverse environment in addition to the curriculum. The research results revealed that the academic achievement, motivation and attitude levels of the students in the experimental group increased more than those in the control group. The students emphasized that metaverse-supported virtual cadaver activities have the potential to increase students' course success, attitudes towards the course and motivation. The findings show that more comprehensive and in-depth research is needed on the potential effects of metaverse-supported virtual cadaver applications in education. This is an important step to increase the efficiency of metaverse applications in education.

The Overlooked Destruction: A History of Israel's State Sponsored Terror and Genocide Tragedy

The Israeli presence in the Palestinian territories has been characterized as colonial and occupying by numerous academic studies within a historical context. The Zionist movement established the state of Israel on a disputed piece of land by forcibly displacing the indigenous Palestinian population. Although there is no specific geographic region known as "Israel," a nation-state structure has been created under this name. One of the critical cornerstones of this process is the Balfour Declaration signed by the United Kingdom in 1917, which represented an international project to provide a homeland for the Jewish people. The Israeli Palestinian issue is a matter that extends beyond military conflicts and territorial claims, possessing deep social, cultural, and psychological dynamics. This conflict reflects the established identities, cultures, and historical understandings between the two peoples. From a sociological perspective, it is a subject requiring in-depth analysis within the frameworks of historical trauma, collective memory, identity formation, and power dynamics. Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has been focused on reinforcing its national identity, addressing security concerns, and overcoming historical Jewish traumas. The occupation of Palestinian territories is seen as a means to ensure security and has garnered broad support within Israeli society. However, this approach profoundly affects the Palestinian concepts of defending their identity and national rights. Palestinians strive to consolidate their national identity by advocating for the right to establish an independent state on their historically and culturally significant land. Territorial claims have thus become not only a physical struggle but also a battle over identities. While Palestinians endeavor to maintain their presence in the occupied territories, Israel views this occupation as a means to protect national security and enjoys substantial societal backing. Both sides advocate for their own legitimacy, which significantly impedes mutual understanding and reconciliation. The lack of trust remains a major obstacle in the resolution process, with both sides harboring deep mistrust that complicates the peace process. Historical traumas and suspicions exacerbate the difficulties in achieving the dialogue and cooperation necessary for peace. The role of the international community is crucial in resolving this complex issue. However, the po wer dynamics among international actors and the quest for international support by the parties involved have further complicated the situation. Regional actors also influence the complexity of the issue; for instance, some Arab countries have utilized the Palestinian cause to serve their national interests, which has negatively impacted the Palestinian struggle for independence. Resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not only a political issue but also one that awaits resolution of deep social and psychological dynamics. Understanding each other, acknowledging historical traumas, and reconsidering collective identity perceptions are essential steps for achieving lasting peace. The active and constructive role of the international community and the contributions of regional actors are crucial for achieving reconciliation, not only on the ground but also in hearts and minds. This study aims to examine Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and the blockade of Gaza since 2006. It will particularly focus on the background of the human rights violations wave that began on October 7, 2023. Claims that over 1,400 civilians were killed as a result of attacks by Palestinian resistance groups have been used to justify a broad state terror campaign. During the attacks, civilian infrastructure, health centers, places of worship, schools, refugee camps, and ambulance convoys were targeted. As of May 28, 2024, nearly 40,000 deaths have occurred, with a significant proportion of women and children among the casualties. This study seeks to leverage the multifaceted perspectives offered by sociology of religion, history of religions, and other related disciplines to provide an in-depth analysis of Israel’s occupation policies and the historical dynamics in the region. This interdisciplinary approach aims to elucidate the social and cultural contexts of the issue through a comprehensive literature review and media analysis. The findings will detail the background of the human rights violations wave that began on October 7, 2023, and the impact of Israel’s disproportionate responses to Palestinian resistance attacks on civilian casualties, with particular emphasis on the significant number of deaths and the high proportion of women and children among them.

Synthesis and thermoluminescence characterization of β-irradiated MgB4O7 phosphor co-doped with Dy and Na

This study presents the successful synthesis of Dy and Na co-doped polycrystalline MgB4O7 phosphor via solidstate synthesis, followed by its thermoluminescence (TL) characterization after beta-irradiation. The crystal structure of the synthesized phosphor was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The vibrational frequencies of the atomic/ionic bonds in the crystal lattice were examined using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, while Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was employed to investigate the morphological features of the MgB4O7:Dy,Na compound. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis was conducted to observe the structural characteristics and homogeneity in MgB4O7:Dy,Na. Furthermore, the thermoluminescence behavior of the phosphor was thoroughly assessed, revealing a TL glow curve comprising at least four distinct peaks, with the main dosimetric peak observed at approximately 200 degrees C. Repeatability and fading analyses indicate that this phosphor holds significant potential for application in radiation dosimetry under beta-irradiation.

Machine learning-driven atomistic analysis of mechanical behavior in silicon nanowires

A sustainable approach for xylitol production from pistachio shell using Candida tropicalis

This study presents a novel approach for producing xylitol from xylose-rich hydrolysate derived from pistachio shells. Initially, xylose-rich hydrolysate was obtained through microwave-assisted high-pressure CO2/H2O hydrolysis, achieving a maximum xylose concentration of 14.58 +/- 0.11 g L-1 and yield of 62.01 +/- 0.92% (w w-1). Prior to the bioconversion process, the hydrolysate was detoxified using activated charcoal to remove inhibitory compounds such as hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural. Xylitol production from the detoxified hydrolysate was carried out biotechnologically using the yeast Candida tropicalis. A Box-Behnken design was implemented to investigate the effect of temperature, pH, and aeration rate on xylitol yield during bioconversion in bioreactor. The highest xylitol yield of 0.94 g g-1 was recorded at 72 h under optimized conditions of 34.5 degrees C, pH 4.5, and 1.2 vvm. Recovery and purification of xylitol from the fermentation medium was achieved using ethanol as an antisolvent. Xylitol was recovered with a yield of 68.4% from culture medium by crystallization. Based on the findings of this study, a sustainable and environmentally friendly process can be proposed for recovering and purifying xylitol from pistachio shell hydrolysate.

Isolation and identification of lactic acid bacteria from artisanal Turkish cheeses, and evaluation of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) production potential

The aim of this study was to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from artisanal Turkish cheeses and to determine the strains potentially capable of producing high levels of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). A total of 507 LAB were isolated from 45 cheese samples. The cheeses exhibited a microbial diversity, consisting of 16 genera and 30 different species belonging to these genera. The most abundant species in all cheeses was Lacticaseibacillus paracasei. Only 40 of 507 isolates had the GAD gene, and all strains were genetically identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum. Two strains (134 and 255) produced GABA in high concentrations, in MRS broth (626.36 +/- 9.86 mg L-1) and skim milk (5.40 +/- 0.47 mg L-1), respectively. The results showed that most of the GABA-producing isolates, especially strains 255 and 134, could be used as starter cultures for the production of functional foods to reduce the risk of disease or improve certain physiological functions.

An electrochemical sensor integrated lab-on-a-CD system for phenylketonuria diagnostics

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is characterized by an autosomal recessive mutation in the phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene. Impaired PAH enzyme activity leads to the accumulation of phenylalanine (Phe) and its metabolites in the bloodstream, which disrupts the central nervous system and causes psychomotor retardation. Early diagnosis of PKU is essential for timely intervention. Moreover, continuous monitoring of blood Phe levels is indispensable for prognosis, requiring a robust and reliable monitoring system. This study presents an automated lab-on-a-CD-based system for early diagnosis and monitoring of PKU treatment. This miniaturised system contains CD-shaped disposable cartridges, a mini centrifuge, and an electrochemical sensing unit. Modified screen-printed gold electrodes were used for the electrochemical measurements in cartridges. Electrode modification was conducted by electrochemical graphene oxide reduction and deposition on the electrode surface, which increased the sensitivity of the measurement 1.5 fold. The system used amperometric detection to measure Phe in the blood through oxidation of NAD+ to NADH by the enzyme phenylalanine dehydrogenase. The limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), and sensitivity of the system were 0.0524, 0.1587 mg dL-1 and 0.3338 mu A mg-1 dL, respectively, within the 0-20 mg dL-1 measurement range (R2 = 0.9955). The performance of the lab-on-a-CD system was compared to the gold standard HPLC method. The accuracy was 83.1% for HPLC and 84.1% for the lab-on-a-CD system. In conclusion, this study successfully developed a portable diagnostic device for rapid (under 20 min), accurate and highly sensitive detection of Phe in whole blood.
