Children with disabilities are among the most marginalized and excluded in the society. This study aimed at ascertaining the typologies of disabilities among CWD in Malindi Sub-County; challenges faced by CWD, parents and caregivers, how they mitigate them and the role of St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in addressing the plight of CWD and its efficacy. A qualitative methodology was used to collect primary data. Structured and semi - structured interviews and focus group discussions were used in collecting data. The result indicated the existence of various types of disabilities among CWD in Malindi Sub County; including physical disability, mental disabilities, visual impairment, and hearing and speech impairments. Challenges faced by CWD included neglect, abuse by the able-bodied, inability to access assistive devices, mobility challenges, lack of awareness of rights, inability to access buildings and facilities and proper housing, inability to access specialized healthcare, inability to acquire employment, inability to socialize, and inability to access specialized education. Challenges faced by parents include joblessness and poverty, inability to access disability-specialized public amenities, marital and family breakups, stress, inability to access information, communication challenges, inability to access government funding, negative attitude by society, insecurity, negative impact of disability on siblings, and lack of formal training in disability issues. The study concluded that though the church had put in place some measures in addressing the plight of CWD, the efforts have not been efficient. To achieve efficacy, the study proposed that the church should set up full-fledged disability ministries; involve parents and the entire society in the planning and mainstreaming disability issues and build synergy and proper working relationships with government and other stakeholders

The study set out to examine the impact of church conflict on moral development and Christian formation with a special reference to Emmanuel Church Kengeleni (ECK), Diocese of Mombasa in the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) between 2000 -2010.  The relationship between the leadership of Emmanuel church and the Freretown Community has changed a lot over the years.  There has been conflict in the church between the Freretown community (whose majority are Christians and members of the Anglican Church) and the leadership of the church. This contestation has manifested in both internal leadership wrangles as well as in public media. From 2000 to 2010, the leadership of Emmanuel church experienced a very hostile relationship with the Freretown community. What was the impact of the church conflict on the moral development and Christian formation? The study intends to analyse the impact of the conflict on the moral development and Christian formation between the years 2000 to 2010. For acquisition of data, the study used qualitative methodology. The study found that the conflict had enormous effects on the church and society both spiritually and socio-economically. As an opportunity, the conflict became a source of church growth, expansion and Christian maturity whereas on the other hand it became associated with retarded development, rivalry, strained relations and negative publicity. The study recommends that church leaders should be trained on conflict resolution and that church provide avenues and structures of proactive conflict resolution mechanism in order to remain the beckon of moral development and Christian formation in the society

Customer supplier relations, customer knowledge and strategic licensing agreements re sub variables of Relational capital that helps the organization to interact positively with business community members to motivate the potential for wealth creation by enhancing human and structural capital.  Relational capital comprises the knowledge embedded in all the relationships an organization develops whether it is with customers, competitors, suppliers, trade associations or government bodies. The purpose of the study was to test the relationship between, Strategic Alliances, Licensing and Agreements, Customer and Supplier Relations and influence performance of pharmaceutical firms in Nairobi County. The study was carried out in Nairobi since most of the pharmaceutical firms were located here apart from a few, which were based outside Nairobi. The research study adapted three research designs namely: Quantitative, explanatory and descriptive research design. The target population constituted 89 pharmaceutical firms and the sample frame was comprised of 31 local pharmaceutical firms. Thus represented 35% of the total population. Purposive sampling procedure was used to arrive at 31 pharmaceutical firms while judgmental sampling was used to target the human resource managers. Out of the 31 pharmaceutical firms the response rate was 18 companies. The instrument of data collection was a structured questionnaire with questions anchored on a five (5) point Likert type ranking scale which was administered to the respondents. The data processing and analysis was done mainly by the use of logarithmic multiple linear regression analysis. The results and findings of the study indicated that the sub variables of relational capital (customer supplier’s relations, customer knowledge, strategic alliance licensing agreement) influenced business performance of pharmaceutical firms in Nairobi County. The overall model indicated that Customer Suppliers Relations with a P-Value of 0.031and Customer Knowledge with a P-value of 0.070 had positive and significant influence to business performance of pharmaceutical firms in Kenya, while Strategic Alliance Licensing Agreement 0.160 had a positive but insignificant influence on business performance

Students’ attitude towards active participation in lectures in teacher education programmes has become a major concern to education managers in higher education circles as well as parents and quality agents. This research study seeks to address the emotive twin problem of non-attendance of lectures and dormancy during lectures on the part of student teachers. In this study, the two problems are referred to as lack of active participation in lectures in teacher education programmes. The objective of this study was to determine students’ attitude towards active participating in lectures in teacher education programmes in selected universities in Nakuru County, Kenya. This study was based on the Theory of Cognitive Dissonance for attitude change propounded by Festinger Leon (1957). The researcher conducted a critical review of literature related to students’ attitude towards participating in lectures. This research study adopted the descriptive survey research design. After piloting, the instrument was validated.Using the split half method and Spearman- Brown Correction formulae, the questionnaire scored a reliability coefficient of 0.7 and was accepted as reliable in line with the threshold recommended by Fraenkel and Wallen (2000).Data was collected from a study population of 310 fourth year bachelor of education students in6 Private and Public Chartered  universities offering teacher education programs in Nakuru County, Kenya. The sample size was 257. The researcher employed stratified, purposive and simple random sampling techniques. Data from students’ questionnaires were coded and analyzed using tools in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0.  Frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations were computed. One- way Analysis of Variance, Post Hoc Test and T-tests were carried out to measure significant differences between means of samples. The study found out that students’ attitude towards active participation in lectures was more positive   in private universities (M = 2.60, SD = 0.41) than (M = 2.46, SD = 0.45) of public universities. The results further indicate that the difference between the two means was statistically significant, t (225) = 2.413, p=.017) at 0.05 alpha. This study therefore established that students enrolled in teacher education programmes in private universities have more positive attitudes towards active participation in lectures compared to their counterparts in public universities. The results of this study could be used by Commission for UniversityEducation and universities in Kenya to shape students’ attitude towards active participation in lecturesin teacher education programmes. The study recommends the need for further research on how quality of instructional activities   can be improved with a view to inculcating in students a positive attitude towards active participation in lectures in these universities

    No full text
The purpose of many studies in the field of Information Systems (IS) research is to analyse causal relationship between variables. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) is a statistical technique for testing and estimating those causal relationship based on statistical data and qualitative causal assumption. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) is the technique that is mostly used in IS research. It has been subject to many reviews either in confirmatory or exploratory settings. However, it has recently emerged that PLS occupies the middle ground of exploratory and confirmatory settings. Thus, this paper intends to propose an updated guideline for the use of PLS-SEM in Information Systems Research in exploratory settings maintaining interpretability. A systematic literature review of 40 empirical and methodological studies published between 2012 and 2016 in the leading journal of the field guide  future empirical work

ANTI-PLASMODIAL ACTIVITY OF SOME MEDICINAL PLANTS USED FOR TREATMENT OF MALARIA AND SYNERGISM OF METHANOLIC EXTRACTS OF CARISSA EDULIS AND ARTEMISIA ANNUA

    Get PDF
The increasing prevalence and distribution of malaria has been attributed to a number of factors, one of them being the emergence and spread of drug resistant parasites. Efforts are now being directed towards the discovery and development of new chemically diverse anti-malarial agents. The present study reports on the in vitro anti-plasmodial activity of 15 selected medicinal plants used widely by the traditional healers to treat malaria in the North Rift parts of Kenya. The plant extracts were tested for in vitro activity against chloroquin-senitive (D6) strains of plasmodium falciparum parasites. Of the 15 species assayed, 40% showed promising anti-plasmodial activity of IC50 ≤ 10 µg/ml, while another 40% showed moderate activity of IC50 between 10 – 50 µg/ml and 20% had weak activity of IC50 between 50 – 100 µg/ml. These results justify the correlation between traditional uses of the plants with their bioactivity. Synergism between total extract of Atemisia annua and Carissa edulis ware also analyzed using combination ratios of 10:90 to 90:10 respectively against P.falciparum parasites. This led to the identification of anti-malarial combination therapy of methanolic extracts of the two plants with sum of fraction inhibiting concentration (FIC) of 0.74 at 50% combination ratios. These results support a rational rather than random approach to the selection of anti-plasmodial screening candidates, and identify a number of promising plants for further investigation as plant-based anti-malarial agents

Exploring Institutional Determinants of Intention to Seek Supervision Services: A Panacea for Empowered Counselors

    Get PDF
Although numerous insights have been generated into the process of counseling supervision, the institutional pressure that steer counselors into seeking and adopting counseling supervision have been largely ignored. In this paper, an institutional framework, which integrates the three (3) dimensions of institutional pressure namely mimetic, coercive, and normative, is developed and hypothesized to influence counselors intention to seek counseling supervision services. The study injects a multi-disciplinary approach by utilizing DiMaggio & Powell (1983) Institutional Theory (IT). The research design was a correlational, cross sectional research design, employing both quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques. A sample of 117 practicing and accredited Counselors in Nairobi County, Kenya was used. Data was collected using a 14 item Likert Scale questionnaire adapted from items used in previous institutional research. Data analysis utilized the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 20.0 to explore significant relations among the research variables. Multiple linear regression yielded a significant model explaining 32.7% of the variance in the intention to seek counseling supervision. The results provide critical insights on the complexity of counselors\u27 intention to seek supervision services. Correlation analysis suggests that Normative pressure and coercive pressure had significant correlation with intention to use counseling supervision (p<0.05). Normative pressure have the greatest effect (β=.520, p<0.01) on intention, while Coercive Pressure (β=.187, p<0.05) had the least effect. The findings revealed that Mimetic Pressure β=-.088 (p>.05) had no significant effect on intention to seek supervision services. Possibly, counselors did not find the need to mimic other successful counselors, as they did not attribute such success to seeking supervision services. The study recommends that counselors training institutions should incorporate supervision training in their curriculum. Further professional counseling associations should enact legislation and implement policies that require counselors to periodically attend counseling supervision
