Many studies on Artisanal Gold Mining (ASM) have estimated that it employs an estimated 13 Million people worldwide, with another 80 to 100 million people directly or indirectly benefiting. With the increasing rate of ASM operations in Nandi and West Pokot Counties, the extent to which AGM affects livelihood of people and the community and contributes to livelihood enhancement is not well-indicated in empirical literature. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the connection between ASM and community livelihood in Nandi and West Pokot Mining Regions, Kenya. The study employed a descriptive research design. Simple random sampling was used to select the respondents for interview. Primary data was obtained by using questionnaires, interview schedules and focus group discussions guide. Findings from the study indicated that majority (67%) of the respondents in West Pokot participated in artisanal gold mining activity all year round. Majority of the respondents in West Pokot County participated in mining activity on a full time basis while majority in Nandi County participate on a part time basis. Results further showed that 62 % of respondents in Nandi County were earning KShs. 4,001 and above from mining activities. Significant effect (p<0.05) of mining activities on incomes was recorded within the two Counties. Furthermore, significant relationship (p<0.05) between artisanal gold mining and socio economic activities within the mining communities was recorded. Therefore, it is recommended that stakeholders should recast mineral policy to ensure concurrent environmental sustainability and socioeconomic development. Keywords: Artisanal Gold Mining, Livelihood, Communit

    Get PDF
Labour turnover (LTO) disrupts organizations both indirectly and directly through increased costs of recruitment, training and social systems. This paper provides an understanding of the effects of human resource practices on labour turnover and how it can be managed in restaurants. The study was based on the equity theory and descriptive research design was used. The study covered a total of 80 restaurants operating in five major towns in Kenya namely: Mombasa, Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret with 284 respondents comprising employees randomly selected. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data. Frequency tables were used to present descriptive data while regression analysis and ANOVA were used to analyse the data. ANOVA results pointed to the fact that HRM practices were basically the same in all the towns studied. It was also established that socio-demographic characteristics and existence of gross informal human resource management practices in the restaurants have contributed to labour turnover. Thus, the study recommended that the Ministry of Labour enact, enforce and monitor standard management procedures that could reduce labour turnover. In addition, ways in which Human Resource Management practices could be used to manage labour turnover in the hospitality industry were given

This study was designed to investigate students’ motivation orientation in the learning of electric current circuits in secondary school physics after exposure of Science Process Skills advance organizer. The study adopted the posttest only design. Students were exposed to various electric current circuits making activities using electric current components before a physics lesson which was conventionally taught before being post tested. A students’ motivation questionnaire was then administered thereafter. A total of seventy two (72) form two secondary school physics students participated in the study. Data were collected using a six item students’ motivation questionnaire (SMQ) with a reliability of 0.799. Principal Component Analysis was used to reduce student’s responses of each of the six items to manageable variables for easy interpretation of students’ motivation orientation in the learning of electric current circuits in physics. The results of the study indicated that students’ exposure to the science process skills advance organizer made them develop confidence in the physics course, they were excited by the activities that had taken place before the physics lessons especially the experiments they engaged in themselves. The results also indicated students were stimulated when they made conclusions of the experiments exposed to them before the lesson and they were happy when they worked through experiments in groups. This study concludes that science process skills advanced organizer can be used to motivate students in the learning of Physics. The study recommends that teachers of Physics be encouraged to construct relevant science process skills advance organizers for other topics of Physics taught at secondary schools. The study also recommends that publishers and physics education experts publish current research on science process skills advance organizers that can be applied in other subjects

Influence of the Professional training of the Clergy on Fostering Cohesion among Ethnic Communities in Nakuru County, Kenya

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to establish the influence of the Professional training of the Clergy on fostering cohesion in a multi-ethnic setting like Nakuru County in Kenya.  Professional training of the clergy is not an end in itself but is the means to an end. They preach the whole counsel of God that will eventually produce mature believers who will perpetuate the kingdom values wherever they will be. Yet Kenya, with a population that is majority Christian at 83%, has had a trend of electoral violence since the introduction of multiparty politics in the 1990s with the most recent and severe case being the post-election violence (PEV) of 2007/2008. While Christians are generally credited for being a strong source of identity and value formation, it has not been the case for churches have been involved and affected often with ethnic groups pitted against each other. The study was guided by Burton’s Human Needs Theory (HNT) and Lawrence’s self- in-God (SIG) model. The study was conducted in Nakuru, a cosmopolitan County, employed descriptive research design and involved the Africa Inland Church (AIC), Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) and Africa Gospel Church (AGC) Congregations. A sample of 120 members of the clergy selected using purposive, stratified, proportionate and simple random sampling techniques participated in the study. The clergy’s questionnaires (CQ) were used to collect data. The content and face validity of the instruments were examined by experts and their suggestions used to improve the tools before they were used to gather data. The collected data was analyzed with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Data was described and summarized using frequency tables and percentages. The Spearman’s correlations was used to establish the relationship between the clergy’s training and fostering cohesion among communities. The findings of the study established that professional training and qualification of the clergy does not influence fostering cohesion among ethnic communities

The link between English Language Proficiency and Academic Literacy: A scientific explanation

    Get PDF
This paper aims at presenting a scientific explanation behind the link between language proficiency and academic performance. This paper adopted the desktop research approach which mostly relied, not only, on a review of published documents, but also extended to oral interviews. There are two types of language proficiency: Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP). The earlier a student acquires the latter, the higher the chances of better academic performance. English language development ideally should include instruction in the types of academic language students encounter in their content classes. This paper’s outcome would go a long way in enlightening and subsequently informing the stakeholders and general public on which measures to put in place to improve students’ overall academic performance. Since, researchers have indicated that teachers have difficulty explicating scientific and mathematical concepts simply and clearly due to their insufficient lexical resources, the study recommends that teachers be trained to help students access the language in academic texts across the curriculum

    Get PDF
Many studies on Artisanal Gold Mining have estimated that it employs an estimated 13 Million people worldwide, with another 80 to 100 million people directly or indirectly benefiting. In sub Saharan Africa it is viewed as an economic mainstay activity providing direct employment to over two million people. Artisanal gold mining uses rudimentary processes to extract valuable minerals from primary and secondary ore bodies, and is characterized by the lack of long-term mine planning. In Kenya, less is known on how different artisanal gold mining communities operate and it is organised. The artisanal gold mining has negative environmental effects and limited positive transformation on the livelihoods of the local communities involved in Nandi County. The objective of the study was to evaluate the impacts of artisanal gold mining organizational dynamics on community livelihoods. The study employed a descriptive research design and simple random sampling was used to select the respondents for interview. Primary data was obtained by use of questionnaires, interview schedules, focus group discussions guide, key informants guide, observations, and photography. Questionnaires were pretested before the actual field survey and the Information gathered during this pre-trial were used to modify the survey tools. Factor analysis upheld the construct validity of the instrument at 0.5 significance. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were used in the analysis of data and the results were presented by use of frequency tables. The findings showed that Artisanal gold mining activities were disorderly in nature thereby preventing improved livelihoods and environmental conservation. In conclusion artisanal gold mining activities in Nandi County were informal and unorganized in nature. The study recommends Artisanal miners be encouraged and assisted by relevant government agencies to form cooperatives in order to have a collective voice in their undertaking such as advocating for government assistance on technology and equipment, marketing and training

EFFECT OF PLANTING DATES ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF COMMON BEAN (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS) UNDER VARYING PLANT POPULATION IN HIGHLANDS OF CENTRAL KENYA

    Get PDF
Studies have shown that increasing dry bean production in many rural agricultural centers in Africa is a problem. In an effort of overcoming this limiting problem, economic use of land by increasing seed rate during planting time per unit area has become common. Efforts of realizing high yields by increasing seed rate per unit area seemed not to bear much fruit due to lack of knowledge on timely planting and plant population. Three different areas in central Kenya were evaluated for the relationship between timely planting dates and plant population in dry bean production. The study aimed at evaluating the effect of dry bean production, in response to planting dates and plant population in Chelelang variety of dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The study took note on the following growth parameters; the number of pods per plant, pods length, number of seed per pod and grain yield.  Each plot layout measured 4x4 m. There were 9 plots in each of the 3 blocks. A path of about 1m was left between blocks. Each plot received treatment combinations assigned randomly. Using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) the experiment was replicated three times. Factors were three planting dates 10th March, 20th April and 5th May and three plant densities; 1 seed / hill, 2 seeds / hill and 3 seeds/ hill. All the trials received similar field management treatments. Data was collected, organized, and analyzed by use of SPSS (Version 22) and the means separated by use of Least Significant Difference (LSD).The study results indicate that  planting date and the plant population are significant on length of the pods, number of pods and final grain yield but no significance influence in seed numbers per pod. The study recommend that farmers should observe planting dates and proper plant population as a way of obtaining good harvest in common bean (phaseolus vulgaris
