Towards a ‘COOPING’ Model for the Investigation of Gamers’ Online Conversations in English

    No full text
This paper proposes a cognitive-functional investigation of gamers’ uses of English in online communication, in order to enquire into the possibility of introducing a model that could be called COOPING (‘COOperation Principles between INternet Gamers’). COOPING was devised at the University of Salento, and it was conceived as a further development of both Grice’s maxims and Guido’s principles describing English lingua-franca uses in intercultural exchanges. The main research hypothesis is that the interactants’ awareness of the need to cooperate to reach shared targets prompts them to select a common linguistic means, which is usually a variation of English, when different linguacultural backgrounds come into contact. This paper will detail the four phases of COOPING—Evaluation, Acknowledgment, Negotiation, and Manner—which are expected to reflect the steps that players follow when they intend to cooperate in these virtual communities. Through an analysis of the selected corpus of conversations, this study will illustrate that gamers: (phases 1 and 2 of the Model) examine and evaluate the interlocutors’ behavior in order to assess their cooperative attitude; (phase 3) decide to select English when community members come from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds; and (phase 4) generate conversation turns that are characterized by specific features, from authentication, to meaning negotiation, to creative and critical modifications to the standard norms, trying to pursue reciprocal understanding and communication

The Truth in the Script and the Untruth in the Movie: Tarantino’s Rewriting of American History

    No full text
In his historical movies, Quentin Tarantino rereads and rewrites three critical moments of the American past. An interesting strategy he uses is that of introducing different imaginary artifacts into the narration: a film-within-the-film (The Pride of a Nation) in Inglorious Basterds (2009), KKK hoods in Django Unchained (2012), and the Viking crucifix in The Hateful Eight (2015). This article aims at investigating how such a transmedia adaptation of these fictitious elements, from the scripts into the movies, defines three ekphrastic sections that overturn the relationship between truth and falsehood. This process can be analyzed in light of Michele Cometa’s theory about the connection between literature and visuality; in the critic’s understanding, the ekphrasis of a real artifact represents a falsification of the work itself, due to the fact that during the adaptation it is in some way altered. Conversely, the ekphrasis of a fictional artifact can be interpreted as a validation of the given object because it is created during the transition process. From this perspective, the artifacts inserted by Tarantino in the mentioned screenplays can be considered ‘true’ since their mental images are brought to life thanks to verbal language. However, once they are inserted into the movies they become ‘false’ because the cinematographic language alters their ‘written form,’ depriving them of their claimed truthfulness. Thus, Tarantino deliberately intermingles facts and fiction to produce a national post-truth narration which is, in Lee McIntyre’s words, “a form of ideological supremacy, whereby its practitioners are trying to compel someone to believe in something whether there is good evidence for it or not” (2018, 13)

What is ‘English for Tourism’?: An Updated ‘Grounded Review’ of the Literature

    No full text
This paper reports the results of a replication of an exploratory study conducted five years earlier that sought to answer the deceptively simple question: ‘What is English for Tourism?’. The original study created a corpus of 348 texts that served as a representative sample of all EfT literature available on Google Books and Google Scholar at the time, including both teaching material and academic literature. A qualitative analysis, which categorized and coded the corpus in accordance with grounded theory, revealed two categories of teaching material—those written for local markets and those written for international markets—as well as two parallel research traditions within this niche of applied linguistics: studies that aim to understand and inform the teaching and learning of English for tourism (EfT) and studies that seek to understand and explain the English of tourism (EoT). A quantitative analysis using Microsoft Excel and the free concordancer LancsBox confirmed and qualified these thematic categories via a comparative analysis of the EfT and EoT sub-corpora. The present study employed the same sampling frame to update the existing corpus with 543 texts published or made accessible online over the last five years. The same mixed-methods data analyses were performed on the expanded corpus. The results of the replication reconfirm the semantic, conceptual, theoretical, and methodological differences and interdependencies between EfT and EoT found during the first study. The results also reveal recent shifts in international and national discourses and expose further gaps in the existing body of literature
