On Westerns and Settler Migration: A Reading of “Meek’s Cutoff” by Kelly Reichardt
This essay examines Kelly Reichardt’s Meek’s Cutoff (2010) as an example of ‘slow’ and feminist western film. In particular, it shows how, by applying an “austere” aesthetics (Gorfinkel 2015) and by giving prominence to the act of migrating rather than the act of settling, the movie rewrites pioneer history, offering an example of what Catherine Russel defines “migrant cinema” (2017). Because of the visual centrality given to the act of migration, with its feeling of geographical displacement and psychological apprehension, the movie situates itself alongside other contemporary films representing present-day migration, and questions the traditional western movement as a travel of self-confident expansion and colonization. In this sense, Meek’s Cutoff can be rather read as a “decolonizing” (Trimble Young and Veracini 2017) rendition of white migration in the West, mostly achieved by including two destabilizing characters within the group of white settlers, Emily Tetherow and a Cayuse Indian, who trigger reflections on matters of knowledge and alliances

Disseminating the Tangible and Intangible Heritage of Sacred Places in the 21st Century: The Websites of British and Italian Cathedrals
This paper considers how cultural and religious heritage is disseminated in websites presenting British and Italian cathedrals. Sacred places are typically at the intersection of different forms of tourism—cultural tourism and religious tourism—and contribute to the transmission of tangible and intangible assets (“buildings and monuments, artistic objects, and also texts, legends, rites and so on” [Aulet and Vidal 2018, 244]). The study is based on a corpus of webtexts in Italian and English, collected respectively from the official websites of Italian and British cathedrals. The analysis looks at this kind of tourism discourse as a form of expert-to-non-expert communication that makes the visitor take part in an imaginary journey (Bonsignori and Cappelli 2019; Cappelli and Masi 2019; Cappelli 2016) in which different types of explanation (Calsamiglia and van Dijk 2004) are adopted to make specialized vocabulary accessible to visitors. The focus is on definitions and denomination (in relation to both art/architecture and religion). The quantitative study shows that the Italian corpus presents a marked preference for denomination (and denominations in the field of art/architecture in particular), while the corpus of British cathedrals is characterized by a marked preference for definitions. The qualitative analysis suggests that this may also depend on a marked stylistic preference in Italian for introducing the nicknames of the artists or specifying names in the local dialect, as against a clearer intention of disseminating the cultural and religious heritage to non-experts in the corpus of websites of British cathedrals. The cultural and the religious components, however, seem to be equally important in both corpora and are often inseparable for the two often superimposed types of visitors
The Cineautistic Detective: Steve Erickson’s “Zeroville” and the New Hollywood Novel
This article proposes a reading of Steve Erickson’s Zeroville (2007) as a post-noir mystery novel in which the ‘cineautistic’ detective Vikar, haunted by the ghosts of his Hollywood myths, brings out the cultural meaning behind the fatal date 1969. Going beyond the tropes of the Hollywood Novel, as a solitary detective who tries to relate to the fragmented space that surrounds him, Vikar will shed some light not so much on the industry’s dehumanizing capabilities—which the classic Hollywood novels aimed to uncover—but on the force of the medium and its conventions. Vikar’s great skills as a film editor will piece together the clues in order to solve a metaphysical cinematic mystery and to confront the cultural transition represented by the New Hollywood and television. As Zeroville’s storyworld proves to be rooted in film experience, this essay also aims to detect the cinematic references and to analyze their meaning in relation to the novel’s discourse on medium.
Prototypes and motifs in the configuration of Melior, female protagonist of El libro del conde Partinuplés
Literature feeds on motifs that ease the understanding of certain content. This also happens in short chivalric stories, including El libro del conde Partinuplés, in whose foundations we can recognize classical, folkloric, and Arthurian roots. This work analyzes the motifs and models which configure the main female character. This character is important enough to carry the narrative thread. We will focus on how Melior, as a prototype of the fairy lover, incorporates specific traits of the literary tradition to which she belongs, while decoupling from it in the wake of a new context of reception

Parole chiave: balletto romantico danese, August Bournonville, storiografia danese, danza e politicaAbstract: Starting from the dance studies related to the processes of representation of the dancing body and to cultural memory - which re-elaborate the historiographical imagination, with the aim of overcoming the myth of the living tradition of the Danish choreographic repertoire - the article contextualizes and analyzes the creation of the romantic ballet Valdemar by August Bournonville (Copenhagen 1835) in the historical-cultural climate of the Danish Golden Age. The purpose will be to test whether a stratified representation such as ballet is able to bring together ideas, feelings, behaviours, projects and hopes, in keeping with the elaboration of European historical Romanticism.Key words: Danish Romantic Ballet, August Bournonville, Danish Historiography, Dance and Politic
This article offers an analysis of the identity of Bucky Cantor, the main character of Nemesis, Philip Roth’s last novel. This Physical Education teacher is acutely aware of his role, particularly at the time when his students begin to be disabled and killed by the spread of a polio epidemic. Instead of developing an actualizing interpretation of the literary text, encouraged by a theme that evokes our contemporary, I thought it important to observe the main character’s reaction to the dramatic effect caused by the polio, as well as to highlight the relationships that constitute his identity. As he is completely identified with the idealised image of himself, so as to look like an invincible hero to his students, Bucky proves unable to consider his own fallibility. This presumption makes it impossible for him to accept to be the main responsible for spreading the polio and turns him into a death trap for the others, into a real nemesis. The novel shows, therefore, that is not much the epidemic that put an end to the students’ lives, as the existence of teachers who, instead of feeding their desire to become themselves, interpret education as a process of conformity to existing models
