Genealogies, poetics and structures of the Spanish romances of chivalry from the Amadís to the Espejos de príncipes: a methodological proposal for the examination of the genre

    No full text
This work analyses genealogy as a structuring principle for Castilian romances of chivalry and their variations. Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Mirror for Poets: the Biographia Literaria as a ‘mise en abyme’ of Wordsworth’s Poetry-Writing

    No full text
Abstract: The article examines the mirroring or the mise en abyme of the friendship and poetics of W. Wordsworth and S.T. Coleridge as it appears in Coleridge’s Biographia Literaria. The text shows they have nearly opposite ideas. On the one side, Coleridge relies on the imagination, i.e., the reflective ‘as if’ Kantian judgement, whereas Wordsworth privileges the poetry of nature and the determinant judgement, realistic and ascertainable. The three themes discussed are content, mimetic form, subjects depicted. The mise en abyme of actual poetry into the language of criticism, reflecting two different mindsets, created opposite mimetic methods: the Biographia being the mirror of reflection and Coleridge’s way of criticising Wordsworth, as to defend himself from his too direct influence. Indeed, this poetic friendship and enmity produced their poetry as a result of a Girardian, and Bloomian before that, anxiety of influence, both poets trying to distance themselves from one another, the other being still present and representing their repressed self. Parole chiave: Coleridge, Wordsworth, mimesis, immaginazione, mise en abyme, sé represso, ansia dell’influenza, H. Bloom, R. Girard. Key words: Coleridge, Wordsworth, Mimesis, Imagination, Mise en abyme, Repressed Self, Anxiety of Influence, H. Bloom, R. Girard. &nbsp

Translating English Fictional Names: An Analysis of Anthroponyms in the Italian Translations of “The Lord of the Rings”

    No full text
This paper highlights the pivotal role played by proper names in fantasy literature and examines the techniques employed by the Italian translators of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings in the translation of anthroponyms. Notwithstanding the vast number of neologisms found in fantasy literature and the challenges they pose to translators, fictional names typical of such genre still play a marginal role in Translation Studies. The aim of this paper is to identify problems and trends relating to the translation procedures adopted in the Italian translations of one of the most representative works of the aforementioned genre. The second and latest Italian translation of The Lord of the Rings (2019-2020), published fifty years after the first one (1970), was the prompt for this investigation focusing on a sample of translatable anthroponyms. Source and target names were analysed and classified in order to identify translation trends characterising the two Italian translations. The results of the investigation show a higher tendency towards adaptation in the previous translation and a preference for more source-oriented techniques in the newest one

Ecology in Canada: Sonic Waterscapes, Literary Waterways, Photo-Lyric Water Soundtracks

    No full text
In this essay I intend to demonstrate how soundscapes might be harbingers of environmental crises and, consequently, how literature translates those same soundscapes and the stories they have to tell. While exploring soundscapes as theorized by Raymond Murray Schafer (1933-2021), one of the most renowned Canadian composers and communication scholars, this contribution also aims to detect his influence on Canadian writers and artists in their literary and creative renditions of Canada’s most characterizing waterscapes

The Language Iceberg: Dictionaries and the Frequency of Inflectional Forms

    No full text
One of the many important lessons imparted by corpus linguistics is that the information supplied in dictionaries and grammars represents no more than the tip of an iceberg. In lexicography, the object of description is fundamentally the lemma. When more specific details are not supplied, the assumption on the part of the average dictionary user is in all probability that the various forms of any given lemma show not only similar frequency and lexical environment but also similar meaning. It would appear that inflectional forms are under-represented in dictionaries. In the literature, very little attention has been devoted to inflectional forms, and in particular to their raw frequency. The frequency rates of the forms of a single lemma can not only differ markedly from each other but can also prove to be far higher or lower than the average for single inflectional forms, something which has important implications for language learners and which could therefore claim more emphasis in language-learning materials. The main focus of this paper will be on the frequency of inflectional verb forms as represented in dictionaries, including a final case study of the frequency of such forms within some idiomatic expressions. The question lying at the heart of this work is whether the raw frequency of inflectional forms should occupy a more important position in language-learning materials. However this may be, the counting of inflectional forms can reveal new and surprising insights into the vast and mostly untamed wilderness of language

    No full text
This essay aims to analyze the short story “The Sorge Spy Ring” (1996) by Bosnian American author Aleksandar Hemon, included in the collection The Question of Bruno (2000). The short story, constituted by two parallel narrative threads, exemplifies the idea of duplicity recurring in Hemon’s literary production. As in the main text an adult narrator recalls the traumatic materialization of his spy-related fantasies during his childhood in late 1970s Sarajevo, the historic vicissitudes of real-life secret agent Richard Sorge are progressively exposed through a complex system of footnotes. The parallelisms between the two threads seem to give a metaphorical aura to Sorge’s character, who freely moves between rival nations, cultures and ideologies, almost becoming a symbol of a transnational migrant identity. Through the examination of the story’s particular structure, I intend to study how the footnotes and other peritextual elements become a sort of secondary narrative dimension. Hemon’s literary strategies will be compared to his biographical experiences as an immigrant writer, divided between the United States and the fragmentary post-Yugoslav context. I will base the analysis on the thoughts about peritext expressed by French critic Gérard Genette in his essay Seuils (1987), and on Linda Hutchinson’s reflections about the postmodern conception of History (A Poetics of Postmodernism, 1988). I will also compare the short story to the work of other writers whom Hemon has often been likened to, such as Vladimir Nabokov and Danilo Kiš.L’articolo proposto consiste in un’analisi della storia breve “The Sorge Spy Ring” (1996) dello scrittore bosniaco-americano Aleksandar Hemon, inclusa nella raccolta The Question of Bruno (2000, pubblicata in Italia da Einaudi con il titolo Spie di Dio).
