Near-synonyms of Anglo-Saxon and Latinate Origin: The Structure of Semantic Variation and its Representation in Dictionaries

    No full text
This article examines the semantic relations holding between pairs of Anglo-Saxon and Latinate near-synonyms in present-day English, such as speed/velocity, sweat/perspire, shy/timid and before/prior. Meaning variation between etymologically unrelated lexical items expressing equivalent concepts has primarily been explained in terms of pragmatic principles, although the differences between them also result from constraints imposed by their denotational semantics. The analysis proposed aims to identify the nature of their semantic proximity not so much by observing meaning construal in specific contexts or the degree of collocational variation, but rather through the observation of how similarity of concepts is conventionally encoded and externalized. This approach has made it possible to provide a preliminary mapping of the areas of overlap and contrast between semantically related items. Eight main scenarios emerge from the analysis of the data: the pairs of words examined are linked by a generic-specific (or specific-generic), literal-figurative (or figurative-literal) or cause-effect relation, but also differ in terms of focus, conventional implicatures or level of iconicity. Some possible lexicographic representations of these meaning relations have been proposed for English monolingual and learners’ dictionaries

Portrait de George Sand en écrivain

    No full text
Abstract: In writers’ autobiographies, the reader expects not only confidences but also a glimpse of their literary career, of how creation develops. In Histoire de ma vie, George Sand provides a non-traditional portrait of herself as a writer, up to 1855, which reveals itself to a careful reading, and which is created by subsequent stages from the orality of childhood fictions, with Corambé, to the ‘clandestine literature’ and the «récits de vie» in the cloister, up to the conquest of ‘professional’ writing. The representations of the gesture of writing at her table are rare, for a female writer who considers herself as a craftswoman, and whose image appears also in the Lettres d’un voyageur and in her writings about theatre. What emerges instead, in the background of the fictional creation, with some novels of the artist too, is a creative act where the limits of individuality are overcome to plunge «dans la grande conscience de l’humanité ».

    No full text
Abstract: This paper deals with the different forms of dance notation invented approximately in the first half of the nineteenth century. If the eighteenth century was mainly characterised by a vision ‘from above’, which insisted on the overall ‘geometric’ displacements in space, in the following century a frontal view predominates, which emphasizes the way in which the dancers’ bodies move and articulate. Moreover, in some cases the attention is focused on the relationship between dance and the other scenic components. The transcription choices, in any case, disclose an aesthetic conception, albeit probably without the awareness of the notators, and the Author will dwell on this peculiar aspect. Parole chiave: notazione della danza ; scrittura della danza; scrittura romantica; coreografia. Key words: Dance Notation; Dance Writing; Romantic Writing; Choreography.

The article «L’analisi linguistica nell’evoluzione mondiale dei mezzi di comunicazione» by Fr. Roberto Busa, a pioneer of the Digital Humanities, was originally published in the volume Almanacco Bompiani: Le applicazioni dei calcolatori elettronici alle scienze morali e alla letteratura of 1962. Despite the fact that the text was written in a preliminary phase of such studies, in which the application of informatics to the analysis of languages and literatures still seemed an unattainable dream, the lucid gaze of the Italian Jesuit in our opinion constitutes even today an observation point of interest to assess the evolution and future challenges in the Digital Humanities field. We present here the Spanish translation of the article with the intention of rescuing the words of Fr. Busa and making them available to a broader number of readers

Figures and counterfigures of the Annunciation in the first romances of chivalry: bedroom scenes and angelic notices of extraordinary conception

    No full text
The article examines the significant role of domestic elements in the Annunciations painted by 14th and 15th century artists. Among these objects Thalamus Virginis stands out for its Mariological and Christological meaning. The drawing of Gabriel\u27s announcement to Mary, keeping the bed in the background, could serve as a model to illustrate other announcements or warnings of spirits or angels in sentimental and chivalric fiction. The outstanding illustrations of the first Castilian prints of the Baladro del sabio Merlín or Tristán de Leonís, among others, are examined. We propose that the counterfigures of the Annunciation could also be transmitted in other sacred-profane episodes of other fictions, such as La Celestina and Tirant the Blanc. The article examines the significant role of domestic elements in the Annunciations painted by 15th-century artists.
