    “It Seemed to Me It Might Be True”: Formal and Functional Variation of “Seem”-patterns in Munro’s Stories

    This work explores formal and functional variation of the seem-verb in Alice Munro’s early stories Dance of the Happy Shades (1968) and Lives of Girls and Women (1971), predominantly first-person narratives marked by profound subjectivity. Through a manual selection of items and a quantitative and qualitative analysis, the article seeks to provide linguistic evidence for and discuss the role of seem in what Howells calls (1998, 85) Munro’s “art of indeterminacy,” that is, a style pervaded by vagueness and elusiveness. The semantics of the seem-verb class (evidentiality, modality, subjectivity, intersubjectivity) is addressed through the multiple forms it presents: seem + AdjP/NP, seem + to infinitive VP, seem that, seem like, seem as if, and parenthetical seem. Results show that the verb floats among attributive, cognitive and perceptual functions, as well as between evidential and epistemic values (e.g., Aijmer 2009; Biber et al. 1999; Johansson 2001; Johnson 2010; Usoniene and Šinkūnienė 2013). As such, it questions categories of factuality, clarity, and stability. Shaping “a grammar of point of view” (Neary 2014; Simpson 1993), seem encodes first-person accounts based on uncertain and unstable focalisers and narrators and reveals point of view as blurred.Il contributo offre una disamina della variazione formale e funzionale del verbo seem nei primi racconti di Munro. Partendo dallo studio di Aijmer (2009), si indagano le valenze semantiche del verbo seem (evidenziale, modale, soggettiva, intersoggettiva) in relazione alle molteplici costruzioni formali (seem + agg. o sost., seem to, seem that, seem like, seem as if, seem parentetico).     Gender-neutral Language in EU Secondary Legislation: The Case of the English Language

    English does not have a grammatical gender, thus having an “intrinsic predisposition towards gender-neutral forms” (Poddighe, 2020: 3). Most personal nouns do not indicate a specific gender and therefore can be used to refer to both female and male referents, such as person or engineer. However, there are also personal nouns with lexical gender, such as king or queen (Hellinger, 2001). As a result, in English, as well as in other grammatical gender languages, there is a risk of creating sentences that are not gender-neutral. Within the EU, the promotion of the use of a gender-sensitive language represents an important objective. For this reason, in recent years, various documents containing guidelines on gender-neutral language have been elaborated to encourage members of the EU institutions to adopt a language that is as inclusive as possible. This article will therefore provide an overview of the history of gender in the English language. Subsequently, specific gender-neutral language guidelines for English and corpora of EU secondary legislation drawn up in English are analyzed. Data is processed by using the WordSmithTools 8.0 in order to carry out the comparison of word frequencies between the corpora under analysis. The ultimate objective is to perform a diachronic linguistic analysis of the 1982-2022 period to assess whether the recommendations of the gender-neutral language guidelines concerning specific features at lexico-grammar level have been observed in the drafting of EU secondary legislation. Specifically, the following lexico-grammar features are analyzed: the use of gender-neutral terms, the avoidance of the generic masculine pronoun, the alternative options to the generic masculine pronouns, and the use of courtesy titles.English does not have a grammatical gender, thus having an “intrinsic predisposition towards gender-neutral forms” (Poddighe 2020, 3).     Black Langue and White Parole: Signifiers and Signifieds in the Grammar of Racism

    Our paper aims to carry out a stylistic and linguistic study of the representation of cultural, racial and linguistic hegemony (Gramsci 1975) in Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad (2016). First of all, we will use Simpson’s (1993) point of view framework to analyse the representation of the slave identity through the eyes of the protagonists as filtered by the narrator but also that of the white masters, especially in their dialogical contacts with the black characters. Point of view will be studied in particular with reference to the characters’ perspectives in moments of doubt, to illustrate how they question the American society of the time. Secondly, we will discuss Whitehead’s linguistic depiction of white oppression and black subordination. The author normally translates the slaves’ dialect into standard English (leaving, nonetheless, some occasional vernacular elements to preserve the ‘spirit’ of the original) apparently disregarding linguistic ‘authenticity.’ However, he shows episodes where there is acontrast between the idiolects of the characters who take part in a dialogue (generally in conversations between black characters and the white man) and instances where such contrast is absent (usually in dialogues between black characters only). Our twofold hypothesis is that the overwhelming prevalence of white over ‘incorrect’ black parole not only makes the text more comprehensible to a wider public, but it also shows how, by delegitimizing black speech, the white master enforces his hegemony, which, according to Gramsci (2014), can be more effectively sustained “through cultural leadership” (Dale Parker 2008, 218). All in all, our analysis will attempt to show how the racism issue addressed through the stylistics and dialect theoretical frameworks manages to show the impact of hegemonic forces on social and cultural relations
