Situazioni cavalleresche nel teatro di Calderón: alcune proposte

    No full text
We discuss the problems posed by attempts to define a chivalric genre in Calderón\u27s production, and we attempt to examine under the lens of the chivalric a set of plays characterized by a mechanism of broad transtextuality, which also encompasses other plays and other narrative and poetic genres. In this way, not only is the corpus of works that refer in some way to the chivalric universe expanded, but also the substantial hybridism of festive pieces composed for palace performances, which are difficult to fit into the best-known generic grids, is explored in greater depth.

Dreams and scenic wonder in Cervantes\u27 «La casa de los celos». With a note on Lope

The analysis of the text, the stage directions and the scenic movement in La casa de los celos point to the author\u27s interest in exploiting for the stage the potential of dreams. Such a common experience is easily recognizable by the spectators and helps to thrill them. Cervantes demonstrates, not only a knowledge of the theory, but also a familiarity with courtly and civic pageants and their reflection in books of chivalry and poesía de cancionero. Although imperfect, the theatrical piece is an indication of Cervantes\u27 concern to link marvels to the inner self. Lope and his early works may have been an influence in adopting these patterns

Task-based Group Presentations: Paving the Way for Language Improvement Through Listening and Dictation-type Activities

    No full text
The Covid-19 pandemic and the transition to online teaching and learning have led language teachers to re-examine and adjust their approaches to teaching to reach and involve learners despite physical distance. Simultaneously, an ever-growing abundance ¬of audio and audio-visual resources for language learning have become available at a click. These may offer a solution to tackle the changing teaching scenario, for listening leads not only to the development of listening skills, but also to holistic language development. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of cooperative group presentations of audio and audio-visual texts. Learners were given an indicative structure to follow to render their presentations interactive for the whole class. Essential components were language-focus activities, including dictation. The experience was measured quantitively with listening level tests (Cambridge format, B2) and qualitatively through a post-course questionnaire on learner satisfaction. Results reveal an overall improvement in listening skills and positive feedback from participants

In the Italian context, it is intended to explore the interconnection between climate change narratives and the pandemic in works such as Antonio Moresco’s Canto degli alberi (2020) and Paolo Virzì’s Siccità (2022).

Individualism and the Metaphysics of Freedom; Or, Deconstructing Dostoevsky

Freedom is the ideal, made possible only by its supplement, originary unfreedom. In this essay, I argue that Dostoevsky’s text, Memoirs from the House of the Dead, shows that his concept of “freedom” becomes the “absent presence” (or the presence of an absence) which gives Dostoevsky’s narrator the idealization of a full, present freedom, which becomes increasing difficult to articulate. The mere concept of “freedom”, I argue, is for the narrator “ungraspable”. Both terms (freedom/unfreedom) are always already at work as an opposition, with the hierarchized term depending on the other for its identity. What our narrator is in effect chasing is the primary source or “origin” of freedom, that which imbues it with meaning — the supplement. In Derridean terms, the “supplement” refers to that which provides the metaphysical concept of “freedom” with the illusion of presence, the idea that it exists prior to and independently of its opposite. In this essay, I show how Dostoevsky’s text repeatedly deconstructs itself on this point; this feedback loop of freedom, the attempt to harness what clearly doesn’t exist in any containable form, serves as the basis for the aporia at the heart of the work, linked, inextricably, to its individualist ideology. The significance of a retrospective approach as opposed to the chronological-perspective approach to F.M. Dostoevsky\u27s biography Dostoevsky attached great importance to the power of a person\u27s childhood memories. Suffice it to recall Alyosha\u27s speech to the boys in the finale of The Brothers Karamazov and a number of statements on this subject in his Writer\u27s Diary. According to the writer\u27s conviction, the identity of a human personality is formed throughout life thanks to the preserved episodes of his memories. This layer is deeply connected with the moral mentality of Russian intellectuals, brought up in childhood in the family on religious and cultural folk tradition. In his famous letter to his brother Mikhail suddenly and unexpectedly appears the young Hesychast Dostoevsky. It is argued that such an ambiguous historical position of Hesychasm is reflected in the story The Landlady. in order to analyze this unique story, it is necessary, and it will be fruitful, to use a retrospective approach. Keywords: Hesychasm; The Landlady; Dostoevsky\u27s childhood; Retrospective approach

Challenges and Opportunities of Globalised English Language Education: A Case Study of Trentino-South Tyrol

    No full text
Forcing the transition from traditional face-to-face, classroom-based methods to online teaching and learning, the Covid-19 pandemic has further expanded the challenges of contemporary education in a globalised world, characterised by increasing cultural and linguistic diversity. This paper provides a critical account of the Bolzano Meisei English Programme (BMP), a collaborative project established between the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano and Meisei University of Tokyo during the SARs-Cov-2 crisis in the spring of 2020. By reflecting on this experience, characterised by intrinsic aspects of originality related to the multilingual and multicultural background of the countries involved, the study aims to discuss the challenges and opportunities of online language teaching and learning in the global digital world. The study is framed in the perspective of Globalised Language Education (GLE) and based on ethnographic approaches (Starfield 2010; Carspecken 1996) and reflective analysis (Gibbs 1988). The dataset is comprised of analogue and digital data, collected in the form of field notes, personal communications, video recordings, email exchanges, and student reflections. BMP offered participants an international collaborative learning experience, supporting the idea that English can be a window into a range of cultures that are perhaps geographically distant but accessible through digital technologies. While the programme was successful in many respects and well received by participants and stakeholders, it also faced challenges that may be useful for future projects and the advancement of teacher education

Translating Business Agility into Language for Specific Purposes Teaching: An Exploratory Study on Digital Tools and Genres

    No full text
Prior to 2020, digital tools were considered an opportunity to enhance students’ learning experience. However, the Covid-19 pandemic turned them into a necessity to enable business continuity when face-to-face interaction was not possible. While 2020 exposed areas in which infrastructure and digital literacy could be improved and pushed institutions to find timely solutions, 2021 was a year of uncertainty that required flexibility to quickly adapt class content and assignments from in-class to online mode. This also required a change in syllabi to reflect the increasing need for agility in business, and therefore in communication, creating a gap between language for specific purposes and the application of knowledge in the workplace. In the post-pandemic world, digital tools are still part of teaching and learning activities; however, both teachers and students are renegotiating their use. This paper provides examples of technology being integrated into teaching activities to enhance students’ learning experience, with a focus on the adaptation of existing content to different teaching modes. The examples include the simultaneous use of different digital tools while conducting classes on Zoom and the adaptation of syllabi guidelines for virtual presentations. The Test-Teach-Test Paradigm was adopted to review the use of two new game-based learning tools aimed at anticipating the use of virtual worlds (e.g., the metaverse) for teaching purposes. The paper draws similarities between consumer and student behaviour in the adoption of technology and provides pedagogical implications for university teachers showcases new tools in an effort to increase student motivation and engagement
