Serving Graduate Students at a Community College Library
No full textEven though a community college library rarely attempts to offer the same depth of support found at a university, it can still serve the needs of local graduate students in two ways: through the library’s core collection of print and electronic resources, and through its on-site services, spaces, and librarian expertise. Graduate students need to know that these resources are available to them. The knowledge and ability of the librarian is key to supporting this patron group. This article is informed by the author’s experiences at the College of DuPage, a large comprehensive community college in northeastern Illinois
Agricultural Nutrient Pollution in the Mississippi River Basin
Get PDFThe nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus harm the Mississippi River Basin. Entering waterways from Midwestern farms, the nutrients flow down the Mississippi River and create large algal blooms. Algal growth can severely reduce or eliminate the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. The lack of dissolved oxygen makes the majority of marine life die or become ill. This creates “dead zones” as seen in the Gulf of Mexico. Nutrient pollution affects human health, the environment, and the economy. By eating a more plant-based diet, working with farmers, and holding polluters accountable, nutrient pollution can be reduced to create safer waters

No full textThe Downers Grove Park District has imminent plans to develop the land of Walnut Park into a recreational sports facility called “Gelwicks Park”. The development aims to provide the Downers Grove community with new amenities, but will directly threaten the surrounding wildlife, including Walnut Park itself and the adjacent Belmont Prairie. There are alter natives to the Gelwicks Park plan that could continue to bring exciting updates to Downers Grove while avoiding harm to its natural areas. What should be changed in the Gelwicks Park proposal to ensure that neither the environment nor the community is being sacrificed for the other?
