Control the Spread of Zebra Mussels
No full textThe spread of invasive species, like zebra mussels, needs to be controlled. Zebra mussels have greatly damaged the economy and environment in the Chicagoland area. Native species are diminishing because they cannot outcompete with zebra mussels. Very few things are currently being done to manage the spread of zebra mussels or reduce their population. However, laws and practices in states that also have a zebra mussel problem, could work in the Chicagoland area. The control of zebra mussels is important in keeping our environment and economy healthy.

A Danger in our Oceans
No full textGreenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, play a crucial role in regulating the temperature of the earth. However, since the industrial revolution, the increased burning of fossil fuels has resulted in a significant increase in GHG concentration. The ocean acts as a carbon sink, absorbing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but this process is leading to ocean acidification. As carbon dioxide reacts with water to produce hydronium ions, leading to a decrease in pH and an increase in acidity. It is essential to reduce GHG emissions to decrease the effects of climate change and protect the health of the planet and ecosystems.

Avascular Necrosis
No full textThis paper examines the basics of avascular necrosis. Questions such as the cause, risk factors, anatomy affected, signs and symptoms, treatment options and prognosis are answered for avascular necrosis. Stages of avascular necrosis are explained which can impact what type of treatment option. Two case studies are presented to show the reality of patients living with avascular necrosis. The case studies dive deep into the emotional impact the diagnosis of avascular necrosis can cause. In order to be diagnosed with avascular necrosis, advanced imaging is needed such as an X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The case studies demonstrate how magnetic renaissance imaging was able to detect avascular necrosis earlier than X-ray. There are options for treatments before and after collapse of the joint. Once the joint collapses, a total joint replacement is necessary. Treatment before collapse is ideal, but most importantly, it is crucial to know what treatment options are available and are best for the patient. The complexity and the-not -fully-understood condition makes prognosis difficult to examine. Although, with the various treatment options available, there are many successful rates of outcomes post-operatively. Avascular necrosis remains unknown to many but should not be glossed over.

Moral Implications of Viewing Pornography
No full textMy research that I am presenting for the student research symposium is based on the ethical question under investigation: Is it ever morally acceptable to view pornography for the purposes of sexual gratification? If so, under what conditions is it morally acceptable, under what conditions is it morally unacceptable? While researching this question, I went through the process of collecting unbiased resources using google scholar, the library database as well as other methods of research collection that would help me form an opinion on a matter that I had no leaning or opinion formed towards prior to the research.
