Pirate’s Life
I am the sea. I am the wind.
The Sun, the Moon and all its stars.
I am the barked orders pinned
to sailing ships both near and far.
I drink the breeze. I taste the waves.
The sand, the salt, the foam.
I pillage through forgotten caves,
finding treasures wherever I roam.
We live by day and sail by night
across the glimmering sea.
Filled with adventure, freedom, and plight;
The Pirate’s Life, the life for me.

Before an Equinox, I Sit on the Deck 
and the season feels suspended.  We will see whether 
this golden light thrown across
the grass bifurcates the day
   so much darkness here      so much there
or, is the weight on the scale
that tilts us all toward heavy frost, snow
   For now 
a waxing moon appears among the clouds, as a cloud
boys cheer on their ball carrier to a field goal
and the crimson flounce of the Mandevilla blossom runs in yellow 
       pleats to its own center
but there is 
my son tugging at his too-short flannel sleeves as he leaves
a funnel spider’s layered mats of detritus: a darkened blossom, 
   a bundle of five brittle needles, the yellowed leaf
and clusters of ants hanging in the clear nectar 
           absent hummingbirds forgot

His room was on the second floor—
more advantageous view of the street.
He demonstrates the pocket doors,
shows me a secret drawer in his closet,
explains when the roof was replaced,
wiring updated, fireplace converted to gas.
It’s been decades since his dog Mengis
left those scratch marks on the hardwood 
floor
and chewed away two banister rungs and 
a chair.
The claw-foot tub there in the basement is
no longer hooked up to plumbing, just
too heavy for him to get up the stairs.
It seems his family moved here
when he was a small boy. I imagine
some seventy years of place related events
cascading in on his stoic demeanor
as I pepper him with questions.
Yet I am left to surmise which room his 
mother
might have died in, why his siblings only now
have required the sell, by what high jinks
he acquired the scar near his mouth, or how
well he might have known Adelma
from the brownstone three doors south.
Final walk-through with both realtors—
my last chance to inspect the place,
first opportunity to bond with its history.
At the title company, while papers
are being passed around, he speaks
of his first job when he was five. For a dime
he sat on stacks of newspapers in the wagon
while his brothers delivered to each
subscriber in the nearby apartment building.
On hot summer nights the families
would grab a sheet and sleep out in the park
that used to be across the street from the 
row-houses
and had an inviting set of swings.
The signing complete, he hands me
two sets of keys, one on a worn leather ring.

you asked me to cover you while your regrets became heavier by 
night
gone dormant from either lack of sleep or premature grief
I accepted you as you are wholeheartedly
without hesitating for even a moment to bring you under my 
jaded tree
its canopy gleaming at the edges
shaded from unanswered prayers and hearkened pleas
maybe it was my misplaced naivety
which could not perceive the extent
of your insatiable appetite
you masked as longing for soul-peace
No it could not have been peace you were searching for
rather a rampant running desire
to simply understand your own grief
instead of carrying it in the back of darkened eyes
seeking an alike wanderer
to instantly recognize the loneliness
folded between layers of white comforters
and tear softened sheets
you expected me to gratify
with sentiment this life
chosen in cowardly fear

I could eject
or rather weave out
only a few spools of empathetic veneers
still I accepted your heated gaze  
as it was given to me
with no intention to fluctuate your ways
I could see glimpses of your underlying heart every so often
and this was enough for me
I saw it reflected in pieces of fractured mirror
In your softness tinged with bleak memoirs
In your loved ones who shifted like tectonic caricatures
robbing you of even a spare moment
to spend in private closure
I think I knew, even on that very first day
you heart would always beat heavier than most
and even after all this dreary reflection, this is the only couplet I can manage to truly 
remember, to hold close,
what a shame it was you shrugged off the one who sought to understand your grief
what a shame it was you left her who covered you under her green canopy
[and still don’t fret- yes, its leaves are now frayed, but now remain mindful, lush in some 
places and healing in other spaces]

That Dirty Rat
 Salvatore Romo was the kind of kid who was begging to be bullied. He was
scrawny, effeminate, wore thick rimmed glasses, and had ears that were about three times
too big for his head. The boys at school referred to him as “homo Romo” or “my gal Sal.”
I hated the constant taunting he endured, but I didn’t dare say anything. Interfering
would’ve meant painting a bullseye on my forehead. Like Sal, I was flawed. I had a lisp,
was socially awkward, and could be easily brought to tears. I was also quite cowardly.
Sal endured countless acts of cruelty over the years. Childhood is not always a time of
innocence. For many, it’s brutal.
 One incident I remember vividly was the day someone had put a live, filthy rat 
in Sal’s lunchbox. When he opened it he jumped out of his seat, squealed, and tossed his
lunch against the cinder block wall across from him. The gymnasium roared with
laughter as Sal ran out in tears, humiliated.
 Sister Rita tasked me and my classmate, Wendy, with disposing of the rat that 
had landed lifeless on the wooden floor. I wasn’t keen on the idea. I had a dreadful fear 
of rats and the thought of being that close to one, even a dead one, made me slightly nau-
seous. Sister Rita shoved a dustpan and brush into my hands. I tentatively approached the 
rat and scooped it up. Having done my part, I quickly handed the dustpan and limp rat to
Wendy. We walked outside past the playground fence to the curb, where Wendy dumped
it out on the side of the road. 
 Suddenly, the rat sprang back to life and scampered down into the sewer grate. 
We both squealed and rushed back into the safety of the school. A couple of weeks later 
my best friend Trish and I squeezed ourselves between the wall and the confessional in 
the church. We eavesdropped on our classmates as they purged themselves of their sinful 
deeds (we did this regularly). We thought it was important to know what unholy acts 
our peers were committing. We heard Sal tearfully recounting how he had tossed the rat 
against the wall, killing it. I wanted desperately to interject and shout that he hadn’t, but 
for obvious reasons I couldn’t.
 A couple of months later on a hot July morning, Sal set out on his bike to deliver
some newspapers. The machismo boys from school spotted him on his Schwinn and
began chasing him down. They were shouting at him while in pursuit, promising to make
a man out of him. In his panic, Sal lost control of his bike and fell in front of our school.
His head hit the sewer grate, killing him instantly. I never did get the chance to tell him
that he hadn’t killed that dirty rat.
