    No full text
After the multimodal adaptation of novelistic writing, social networks, in turn, mark the development of transmedia writing that unfolds through the predominance and diversity of native web discourses. Fans of novelistic and cinematic works use social networks to make reality an extension of the world they dream of and wish to integrate by producing what is called not only “literary arts,” encompassing a temporal, historical, and diachronic perspective, but also new discursive forms. Our study focuses on these new discursive forms constructed by Harry Potter fans, namely pseudonyms, comments, and memes. We explore how these are constructed and how they can be analyzed, but above all, we seek the purpose of their existence beyond pure transmediality. Indeed, to do this, after noting their placement in an interdiscourse due to transmediality, the analysis of these discursive assemblages arising from a Levi-Straussian discursive bricolage leads us to the deconstruction of these statements. Certainly, relying on discourse analysis, particularly on dialogism and pragmatics, we have been able to identify the marks of identification and belonging that characterize these discourses. Particularly, there is a recycling of a Potterian cultural knowledge that opens an original intermedial creation horizon in their digital multimodal interdiscursive assembly, the unpredictability, increase, and composition of which call for a more in-depth investigation into the analysis of digital discourses specific to fandom communities that mark their digital identity beyond traditional transmediality.

    No full text
This text on Molière’s work focuses on the possible connections this playwright maintained with the scientific and philosophical circles of his time. His affiliation with skepticism and the group of erudite libertines is of interest, in particular his affiliation with Pierre Gassendi, an astronomer, a great connoisseur of eclipses, and a figure close to the circle of advocates of Galileo. In several plays, this playwright and supporter of the group of advanced thinkers within the famous “Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes” confronts these antagonistic positions masterfully. Within his repertoire, there is a great variety of pieces that build intrigue from a chaotic confrontation of pragmatic characters, and dogmatic positions. Two pieces from the last stage of his production are analyzed here: Le malade imaginaire and Les femmes savantes. These plays allow the playwright to make a fierce caricature of the detractors of the new science. The doctors and sages in each, wise or pedantic, are fiercely caricatured. This creates a very negative image of the supporters of scholastic teaching and extreme respect for tradition and old science.

    No full text
In most cases, territorial management is oriented to the development of projects or actions to respond to the needs identified by the government (national, regional, or local) from its own perspective. However, it does not consider the complex interactions between the components of the territories, the effect of episodic or continuous disturbances, the territorial response capacity to these stressors, and the unforeseen factors. For this reason and considering the environmental resilience as a tool that effectively contributes to territorial governance mainly at the local level for its contextualized management, the main objective of this article is to propose a methodology to assess territorial environmental resilience. This is carried out using some theoretical considerations, the analysis of the relevance of territorial studies through the lens of resilience, and a previously validated methodological proposal to conduct a comprehensive diagnosis of resilience in territories facing internal or external stressors. It considers the determinants of the ecosystem as well as sociocultural and political-economical aspects with the purpose of having sufficient and adequate information to generate governance strategies aimed at creating or strengthening its degree of resilience. Thus, the most important aspects to consider in the proposal of these strategies are finally outlined, ensuring a coherent implementation with local territorial realities, the participation and shared responsibility of the social actors, and the adaptive capacity of the process.

Currently displayed in the Library of Congress of the United States as “America’s Birth Certificate” (despite the fact that said toponym was inscribed exclusively over what is now generally referred to as South America), the planisphere Universalis Cosmographia, drawn up by Martin Waldseemüller in 1507 and rediscovered in 1901 by Joseph Fischer in Germany, has monopolized much of the literature on early cartographic representations of the continent as the most important sample of the Lusitano-Germanic cartography of the early 16th century, precisely because it is the first to incorporate the controversial name that our continent bears today. However, along with the designation America, there are other toponyms that have not had the same prominence and that even, most of the time, go unnoticed, but that also tell us about the history of the then called New World and the process through which its map was constructed. This article seeks to account for the typical characteristics of the contour and nomenclature of the current Colombian-Venezuelan coast within this cartographic current and for how this design, with its omissions, inaccuracies, and alternative names, was reproduced without major additions, corrections, and updates for more than two decades in Central Europe. By extracting the profiles and toponymy corresponding to said coastline in the Lusitano-Germanic maps of the first quarter of the 16th century and by their analysis in correlation with the primary sources related to the first voyages of discovery, the physical geography of the region, and the corresponding secondary bibliography, we expose and argue how the Germanic cartography of the so-called “tierra firme” suffered an empirical stagnation that expanded throughout the first three decades of that century.

What can a tree tell us about a constantly colonized landscape such as the Valley of Mexico? The aquatic origin of some tree species, such as Taxodium mucronatum (Ahuehuete) and Salix bonplandiana (Ahuejote), are a testimony that forces us to reach within collective memory and contrast the past with the present. This memory, which is disarticulated by the many components of a given landscape: vegetation, fauna, landform, and water channels, to name a few, holds the relics of a place that remains in our imagination. Thus, I selected some tree lake species that cohabit in the streets of Cuauhtémoc, Mexico City, that represent an almost extinct biocultural component in the territory’s landscape, which retains similarities of the layout of Mexico City-Tenochtitlan. The management of trees in the city is engrossed in a complex conflict, not only due to the presence of diseases but also because there is still no sustainable approach that allows researchers to analyze these organisms from alternative fields of study like anthropology. The application of standards is the main instrument of legitimation; however, it has caused damage to trees, along with the constant power conflicts to control the structures of the State.¿Qué puede decirnos un árbol en un paisaje constantemente colonizado como es el Valle de México? Mervyn Peake’s Boy in Darkness (1956) is a novella that consistently develops the tension among modes of being which are inextricably linked to our notions of identity and alterity: the human, as presented in the complex networks of culture; the nonhuman, as given in nature; and the posthuman, as a combination of human and nonhuman through technological or magical influences. Concerned with the conflicting relationship between people and the world they inhabit, the Peakean narrative depicts such a relationship through a phenomenon that at once separates and binds together all three modes of being: language. While the nonhuman diversity—animals, fungi, nonliving matter—does not exhibit speech, the human and its complementary yet feared alterity—genetically modified individuals—interact within what Lacan calls the symbolic order, from which subjectivity emerges. It is within this order that desire, the roots of which are found in a perpetual sense of lack, unites linguistic beings in a shared experience of nostalgia. The insistence on a return to an idealized former state motivates the entire narrative, in which the protagonist is torn between the desire to be altered and the desire to restore his sense of self. Using Lacan’s theory of object lack in his Seminar IV, this paper aims to explore the paradoxical quality of desire in Peake’s novella, where the conflicting relationship among the three modes of being results from the subject’s endless yearning for the absent and the unattainable. Boy in Darkness (1956) is a novella that consistently develops the tension among modes of being relating inextricably to our notions of identity and alterity: the human, as given in the complex networks of culture; the nonhuman, as given in nature; and the posthuman, as combining human and nonhuman through technological/magical input. Confessional poetry draws a thin line between the poetic voice and author. As a genre, it can be used as a medium of introspection, for self-recognition, or as a cathartic and therapeutic experience. Sylvia Plath’s seemingly intense autobiographical work functions in this liminal space where her concise verses allow a glimpse into the author’s own experience. “Lady Lazarus” and “Daddy” contain specific instances of violence where the narrative self seeks to make sense of personal trauma by means of biblical and Holocaust related metaphors. In both poems, the body appears in a state of dismemberment, cataloged into parts and painfully broken to emphasize nonconformity in the search for identity. The brutalized treatment of the body evokes processes of dissociation, according to Jacques Lacan’s theory of the “fragmented body,” resembling how Primo Levi treated the trauma of dehumanization in his narrative concerning life within concentration camps. Therefore, the use of a foreign historical tragedy in Plath’s two poems acts as a general device for intimate expression. The narrative self transforms into an object by borrowing the communal experience of the most immediate historical event, that of the Holocaust, to capture the author’s individual concerns (such as her anxiety towards nuclear war and a difficult relationship with repressive masculinity). In “Lady Lazarus” and “Daddy”, interweaving mental and physical hurt with bodily pain is a common thread providing coherence to Plath’s dislocated sensibility, both as an enhancer of trauma or as an element of contemplation and liberation. Understanding the above, this article aims to analyze the use of problematic imagery—described as impersonal historic references—for the author’s expression of the body’s experience in both poems; thus, this text puts the possible limits of the semi-autobiographical element in Sylvia Plath’s confessional work to the test.

“We found ourselves reduced to I”: la protesta afectiva y autorrepresentación en “The Rabbit Catcher” de Sylvia Plath

Since its first use in 1959, confessional poetry, a term used to describe poetry of a biographical nature and emotional rawness, has provoked diverse reactions and rejection from different schools of thought. On the one hand, formalist studies deny the possibility of making an analysis under the confessional logic because it would be incurring in the intentional fallacy. Feminist studies, on the other hand, have problematized the uncritical use of the term, since there is a tendency to think that confessional writing is not serious literature, but only scribbles in women’s intimate diaries. Thus, due to its connotation and mostly pejorative use, a fraction of this field of studies is reluctant to use the term and has sought to discourage such readings, since they demean the work of women writers. However, today, the confessional label continues to be used to evaluate and read, within and outside the academy, the works of authors such as Sylvia Plath. In this research, I will address Sylvia Plath’s poem “The Rabbit Catcher” (1962), which was recovered by Frieda Hughes, the author's daughter, in Ariel: the Restored Edition after being removed by Ted Hughes, Frieda Hughes’ father, in his posthumously published edition of Ariel. Drawing on the biographical facts known about Plath and the proposals of Andrea Muriel López and Gabriela García Hubard, which belong to affective turn, I will analyze how Plath’s self-representation manifests itself in this poem with the purpose of reflecting on the relevance of the confessional term, and how it informs the readings. This, in order to argue that Plath’s case is fertile ground to bridge the gap between the alleged objectivity of the intrinsic analysis of a text and the emotionality found inside and outside of it.Desde que se acuñó en 1959, la poesía confesional, término que describe la poesía de corte biográfico y de crudeza emocional, ha suscitado reacciones diversas, provocando rechazo de parte de distintas escuelas de pensamiento.
