    No full text
In 1963, Jorge Luis Borges published a sonnet titled “Robinson Crusoe”. He later changed the title to “Alexander Selkirk”. The present paper explains such a change as an attempt on the part of Borges to subvert the iconic figure of the resourceful castaway, as represented not only by Defoe’s Crusoe but also by Selkirk, one of Defoe’s inspirations, as he was depicted by contemporary chronicles. This paper also compares Borges’s Selkirk with the one depicted by the XVIII-century poet William Cowper, and suggests that the latter’s may have been a possible inspiration for Borges. Since in both compositions the poetic voice is to be identified with Selkirk, it is possible to study both poems as instances of dramatic monologues.

This work approaches femicide violence as a social process rooted in the patriarchy and the savage capitalism that belittle, make invisible, and attack women. We identified the connection between the legal system and social contest. From critical feminist geography to the possibility of change and commitment to transform unjust conditions, it poses gendered space as an overly complicated social production. Here we accurately see how the feminist movement, made up of activists, groups, and families of women victims of violence, including the feminist academy and diverse feminist strands present in the political sphere, has promoted changes at the legal level. Nevertheless, these transformations have unleashed resistance in conservative groups. An empirical study based on justice procurement and Justice administration was developed during the National Censuses of 2018. Based on these data, national maps were prepared by state entities that allow accounting for resistance to classifying crimes against women as femicides. We contribute to the theoretical framework based on the methodological triad constitutive of space. We refer to creating spaces free of violence, the complexity that it entails, and the resistance that must be overcome through the feminist movement and the transformation of legal frameworks.

    No full text
This paper studies the relation between the shipwreck motif and the language acquisition process in Baltasar Gracián’s El Criticón and Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. The argument is that the shipwreck constitutes one core of the story that promotes the development of the intellectual adventure. The analysis of the parallelisms between these texts focused on four elements—the edifying intention in both works, the treatment of the shipwreck, the characters meeting, and the language acquisition process—reveals a unique conception of adventure in which the intellectual component is relevant for the development of the confrontation between the characters and their realities. This study proposes a reflection about the inquisitiveness of these authors regarding knowledge as a part of literary adventure.

    Get PDF
The first allusion to the story of Herod’s banquet, during which John the Baptist was beheaded and his head given to Princess Salome as a reward for the performance of a magnificent dance, is found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Over the centuries, the brief story was subject to multiple and varied reworkings, from the first century AD to our days. The story of the young princess Salomé began its formation as a literary myth since 1841 with the publication of the work Atta Troll by Heinrich Heine; later it continued its expansion in French literary circles with the unfinished Hérodiade by Stéphane Mallarmé, which became an important source of inspiration for the famous paintings Salomé Dancing before Herod (1874-1876) and The Apparition (1876) by Gustav Moreau, in which the rewriting of the old biblical story takes on a new and complex symbolism. This paper focuses specifically on the analysis of the symbolic construction of the theme-character of Salome in representative works of the time, a literary and a pictorial sequence, in which intertextual links can be identified and whose common objective is the construction of a character that, beyond representing the typical image of the fatal woman, becomes an embodiment of art itself.

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) is a fundamental writer in the history of contemporary Children’s Literature. In his novels Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) and Matilda (1988), food plays a central role shaped around three different narrative strategies: representing power relations, subverting the tradition of Children’s Literature as a didactic or moralizing genre, and functioning as an element of transformation inside the respective plots. Dahl reinvented the literary tradition of Children’s Literature and shaped a metaphorical universe in which power relations between child and adult are being disrupted. While employing food as a polysemic sign to portray and convey new meanings to the power relations between children and adults, Dahl subverts and homages classical Children’s Literature and traditional fairy tales at the same time.
