    No full text
Based on the notion of nomad, a concept taken from Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s theory on the Smooth Space, in this article I analyze the representation of Vivian Lawlor, protagonist of Catriona Lally’s novel Eggshells (2014), by means of her walks through Dublin. While this city works as the counterpoint to the Smooth Space—i. e., the Striated Space—I propose that Vivian, given her manner of being in and for space (Deleuze y Guattari), embodies the figure of the nomad as she reterritorializes it. On a diegetic level, this middle-aged unemployed woman, who lives on welfare and does not take care of her appearance, dotes the Irish capital with another layer of meaning. She does so by believing that she is a changeling¾a fairy in the folkloric tradition of the country¾and, therefore, by actively walking through the city looking for portals that will transport her to her alleged place of origin. Vivian is certain that she is a magical entity due to the corporeal and emotional violence that her parents exerted upon her as a child. Thus, as she strolls, she is also taking a stance regarding her identity as the Other¾an action that has an impact on an extradiegetic level. In other words, Vivian’s walks through Dublin are not only literal, but also metaphorical: they become a confrontation of certain standards of femininity, which for the purpose of this article are representative of the Striated Space. For this analysis, I study Lally’s appropriation of the fundamental characteristics of the fairy tale because the fantastical element fosters the transformation of the protagonist and, therefore, grounds her condition as a nomad.

In response to Caren Kaplan’s critique of modernist exile, this article repurposes Bakhtinian theory as an instrument for understanding Joycean border-crossing and barrier-breaking as forms of centrifugality. It also asks whether a novelist that Bakhtin ignored might turn out to have produced the maximum expression of Bakhtin’s own ideals of novelistic representation: dialogical, carnivalesque, multi-chronotopic, body-centric, and lingo-culturally interstratified. To advance this argument, the major Bakhtinian concept of heteroglossia is expanded beyond its original, intranovelistic purview to describe both the energies and the fraught complexities of exile as a motor of modernist art. A proposal for a theoretical axis linking exile, heteroglossia, and Russian Formalism leads to a discussion of obscenity as both a centrifugal and an aesthetic object for Joyce: dirt for art’s sake. And this in turn leads to an analysis of interstratified layers of representation in Ulysses as a form of heteroglossia that depends for its power on both the exilic and the affective. Ultimately, this article demonstrates that Ulysses, as a radical departure from the standard, centripetal language of earlier novels, represents the quintessence of novelistic heteroglossia, not only in its stylistics but also in spatial terms: those of the mutative, centrifugal forces represented by its global travels and the exilic image of its creator.

This paper explores Jorge Luis Borges’s and Pablo Neruda’s reception of James Joyce’s works in the context of the rise of the Latin-American avant-garde during the 1920s and 1930s and the role it played in the configuration of their own aesthetical discourses. Throughout the paper I will trace the connections between Joyce’s “decentered” condition as an Irish author and those of Borges and Neruda as Latin-American writers confronting the Hispanic tradition. I will argue that this positioning of themselves in connection to their colonial condition helped to formulate a sense of identification that allowed them to posit the idea of a transnational artistic community engaged in similar experimental practices. The article establishes a dialogue between these authors as it aims to understand the system of aesthetical bridges, anguishes, and liberties that conjoined them as members of a decentered and transnational artistic community.

    Get PDF
Among Heschel’s main contributions one must consider the pathos of God—i.e., the connection between God and man from the emotional affection between the two. Furthermore, the notion that man is not the one who should seek God, but that it is his responsibility to accept an alliance with Him constitutes the starting point of various theological reflections. Heir to Eastern Judaic thought and a member of a Hasidic family, Heschel offered a link between Eurocentric and Asian thought, and very specifically between Western philosophy of Hellenic origins and the contributions of Hebrew thought. Initially, this article addresses Heschel’s conviction about a God without representations, one who is not reduced to images or sculptures. Of course, since there were no material resources for the symbolization of the divine, Heschel proposed the connection with his pathos or his emotionality. This concept, addressed in the second section of this text, constitutes the central element of the theology of the Polish rabbi and is the source of the main criticisms of his thought. Finally, there is an allusion to the type of bond that corresponds to the relationship between man and God. Unlike for other theologians, for Heschel it is not man who must seek God, but rather it is He who is in search of man, either to reiterate his Covenant or to endorse his presence.

    No full text
The article aims to analyze the narrative strategies present in Alejo Carpentier’s The Harp and the Shadow (El arpa y la sombra, 1979) that comprise what current literary theory has identified as the Latin American ‘new historical novel’. First, a brief description of the traditional historical novel and its context of appearance during the European romanticism of the 19th century is provided, based on Georg Luckács’s (1966) contributions, to differentiate its model from that of the subsequent production in this genre. The following is a general characterization of the historical novel written in Latin America from the last decades of the 20th century, to recognize the historical-social circumstances that led to its renewal and the features that determine it, together with the proposals of Menton (1993) and Aínsa (1991) on the fundamental role of Carpentier in its constitution. Finally, the study of each indicated feature—conscious distortion of historical events, the fictionalization of significant historical figures, use of the first person in the narration, dialogism, and polyphony—is carried out to demonstrate the belonging of The Harp and the Shadow to this recent type of texts.

    No full text
This article proposes that prose and, more specifically, novelistic prose as a modern literary form and its affordances bear a connection with the notion of prosaism understood as a range of experiences determined by the conditions of modernity in Western societies. Within this range, the tensions between the individual and the collectivity, especially in the form of the urban anonymous multitude, are of particular interest. Thus, the article first deals with the notion of the prosaism of modernity in its relationship with literary prose. Next, it discusses a number of theoretical and critical perspectives related to the affordances of the novel that have allowed it to dramatize the contradictory position of the individual, as posited by liberalism, and to evoke the form of his/her subjectivity through devices like characterization, free indirect style, focalization, among others. Finally, the article presents a reading of the character Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities and his notional connections with the model of the individual.
