The paper ponders on the effects of formatting and citation styles in the academic production of American literary studies. Firstly, I revise the most-used citation styles in the United States, those enforced and distributed by the University of Chicago Press, the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Modern Language Association (MLA). The successful incorporation of citation styles in academia is a consequence of the epistemological orientation adopted by American universities during the second half of the nineteenth century by following the German university model. Secondly, I reflect on the relationship between form and content in an academic text, as both dimensions are closely intertwined. This is a discussion over which literary studies has agonized tirelessly, but it is often overlooked in the case of academic writing. Finally, I present a brief case study about the Modern Language Association to sketch a theoretical and methodological proposal to study the influence citation styles have had on the dynamics of knowledge production in current academic disciplines. Thus, in this paper I argue that citation styles shape research in American literary studies, both ideologically and epistemologically. The effects of formatting and citation styles are a consequence of explicit and implicit messages transmitted by the associations and the manuals that promote their formatting guidelines and suggestions.

Imagen autoral y trabajo colaborativo

    No full text
Developing from the metaphor of the book as a gallery, this text takes a walk through Nueve pintores mexicanos (1968) by Juan García Ponce. Using Rebecca Solnit’s (2000) notion of walking, the article is about getting in and out across the book based on the experience of both reading and seeing. This gives ground to see how, by bringing together texts of art criticism and a collection of paintings and photographs, those involved produced an authorial image, both as an individual and a group. This question links to the analysis of their collaborative work as part of a compelling moment of the book culture during the second half of México’s 20th century. In this way, the text explores the creative relationship that developed between García Ponce, the photographer Héctor García, and the nine painters of the so-called Ruptura: Lilia Carrillo, Manuel Felguérez, Fernando García Ponce, Francisco Corzas, Gabriel Ramírez, Roger von Gunten, Arnaldo Coen, Alberto Gironella, and Vicente Rojo. The text also approaches the historical, political, and social context of 1968 as a scenario of great importance for the book’s discursive, authorial, and visual configuration. It is important to consider that the text is divided into sections to favor an approach to some aspects of the publication that are not necessarily chronological.

What magic can perform: théâtralité et performativité dans Doctor Faustus de Christopher Marlowe

    No full text
In a context dominated by the iconoclasm of English Anglicanism and by the “textualization” of religious culture, Christopher Marlowe transforms his play Doctor Faustus (1589), staged in the theaters of the London suburbs, into a reflection on the performative and “incarnationalist” capacities of theater. This article studies how the metaphorical inflection of the theological language that the ecclesiastical authorities had used to denounce the perverse effects of theatrical representation allows the English dramatist to formulate a conception of literary art as the creation of a world and no longer as an imitation of nature. Thus, Marlowe resignifies the concept of performativity in theatrical terms: while, in the theater of the world, the performativity of divine predestination condemned the faithful to a situation of existential anguish, artistic performativity gave spectators the opportunity to create their own world, the world of the theater. Therefore, the aesthetic reworking of the theological lexicon and imaginary proves to be Marlowe’s most profound response to the crisis of “theological absolutism”: he turns the theater into a play space where the trauma caused by this crisis could be worked through and eventually overcome by its dramatic resignification. In other words, in Marlowe’s version of the Faustian myth, human self-affirmation is realized mainly through the cathartic power of theatrical illusion.

“The dandelion in the spring”: la felicidad, el amor y la responsabilidad en The Hunger Games

    No full text
Using affect theory, and specifically the idea of the “happiness turn” proposed by Sara Ahmed, this article explores the way in which the main character of The Hunger Games trilogy (Suzanne Collins, 2008-2010), Katniss Everdeen, is constituted as a responsible and ethical individual. The text pays attention to the literary trilogy and only occasionally to the cinematographic adaptations, for it considers that the literary texts highlight the artificiality and the construction of the promise, whereas the films —especially the last one, Mockingjay: Part II— seem to respond to the imperative of marriage as the giver of ultimate happiness. The article proposes that the hybridization of science fiction and romance fiction contributes to the configuration of Katniss’s character and to nuance the need to pursue a successful love story with a happy ending, while it also explores the subversive capacity of love stories. Due to this, the article also proposes that the end of the trilogy can be interpreted as eucatastrophic because it implies loss and consolation for its protagonist, even though it also appears to fulfill the promise of happiness.

“Until the drum speaks”: ambientes acústicos historizados en The Arrivants de Kamau Brathwaite

    No full text
This paper proposes that historicized soundscapes can situate language by merging words and music, which can turn poetry into a site for the decolonization of the mind, language, and culture by introducing a range of cultural experiences as an act of creolization. Through the analysis of three drum poems in Kamau Brathwaite’s The Arrivants, the presence of these soundscapes highlights tensions within language that allow the poet to weave webs of sound, a process that, on the one hand, complicates the relationship between individuality and collectivity as part of an aesthetic effort that emerges from fragmentation and, on the other hand, creates a framework where memory, history, and myth are tied together as part of a narrative that illustrates archipelagic thinking in order to represent cross-cultural imagination. Thus, this paper examines how soundscapes in poetry can become vehicles that generate a historical and mythological quality as ways to access and preserve history without fixing it to a specific point in space and time. Through a close reading of the drum poems, these features foreground Brathwaite’s different decolonial endeavors through counter-reading, translating, and reassessment of language to represent an Afro-Caribbean versioning of the epic as part of an extended cultural archipelago.

Refuting sophist relativism (Protagoras' homo mensura) is one of the most urgent tasks proposed by Aristotle's philosophy. Accepting its validity would erase the distinction between good and evil, true and false, reality and fiction, being and not-being. Sophist relativism, by rejecting the essential unity of being and disseminating its significance to infinity, prevents the possibility of true and fair and knowledge about reality, promoting an alarming "anything goes". To refute it, Aristotle demonstrates that being (the real) possesses in itself an essential substance (ousíā) that gives it ontological stability outside of all socio-historical contingency. The ousíā (essence), by fixing the identity of the being, guarantees the possibility of its univocal and unequivocal reference and, therefore, of knowledge and truth. Now, at the moment of accounting the ousíā as the foundation of the unity of being, Aristotle does nothing but open an aporia: the ousíā (essence) is said in many ways, there is an irreducible diversity in its significance. The diversity of meanings refers to a plurality of essences, which indicates, paradoxically, the impossibility of the full identity of the being, the impossibility of the unity and ontological stability of the real.

This article seeks to analyze, through the characterization strategies explained by Luz Aurora Pimentel, the transformative process of certain pairs of characters in Charles Dickens’ well-known historical novel A Tale of Two Cities (1859). At the beginning of the narration, the pairs of characters of Alexander Manette and Ernest Defarge, Jarvis Lorry and Jerry Cruncher, and Charles Darney and Sidney Carton are portrayed in a contrasting manner regarding both their physical and moral attributes. At the beginning of the novel, Defarge, Cruncher, and Carton share characteristics such as emotional detachment, dishonesty, and recklessness in different degrees, while Manette, Lorry, and Darney are characterized as compassionate, honest, and solidary. However, throughout the novel, all of these characters reveal, through their figural speech and their actions, different ways in which they become similar to their apparent “counterpart,” for, by the end of it, all of them share characteristics with their double through a process of coexistence and learning. I argue that the fact that there is a possibility of reformulation in the characters’ identities demonstrates the existence of nuances between the moral extremes represented in the novel which at the beginning appear to be immovable. This, at the same time, destabilizes conceptions such as “hero” and “villain” as well as the supposed differences between the characters from both sides. A Tale of Two Cities (1859).
