In this contribution I discuss the theme of violence and its impact on identity within the graphic novel Persepolis (2000-2003). The author of this multi-modal autobiographical discourse, Marjane Satrapi, recounts her individual experience of the Iranian revolution and the establishment of the Islamic regime of the late 1970s. The corpus is composed of two sequences, which I have selected according to the epiphanies of the author—(1) the death of her friend Neda and (2) her forced migration to Europe—to demonstrate how these moments of identity transformation within the discourse are linked to different forms of violence. Each sequence is analyzed with the biographical-narrative method and with tools from both multimodal discourse analysis and identity studies. Part of the results show that the narrator uses various evaluative elements inscribed within the iconic and linguistic semiotic resources, which allow to evaluate the events and the actions of one’s own and of others. With this, it is evident that subjective-systemic violence transformed the subject in two ways: into a brave woman and into a woman uprooted from her culture and family ties. In conclusion, the subject is disturbed by contextual factors—not only historical, but political, social, and cultural—that condition her to change over time. The above is configured by the narrator in the doubly articulated story and in the different models of action that affect, mainly, her identity-ipse.
The book of stories Dangerous Futures (2008) by the Spanish writer Elia Barceló and its version of the same year in comic, in which Jordi Farga collaborates as a writer and Luis Miguez Ybarz as illustrator, formulate a proposal for textual copresence, shared contents, and, after all, a certain significant autonomy; this we understand as transmediality. Both texts, that of Barceló—written—and that of Farga-Ybarz—sequential art that expands the hypothext—recreate themes of the immediate tomorrow, in hyperbolic terms, from one of the lines that have highlighted certain recent analyses of science fiction: the question of today’s extratextual fictionalized reality, whose problematization points to the very character of the fictions. The aim of this article is to recognize the role of both texts, with different codes, in writing about the everyday violence that takes place in the extratextual universe. In addition, I will seek to explain the complex process of dialogical relationship between literary writing and sequential art. From the concepts of transmediality and violence, nodes of meaning are identified in two stories included in this book, which are considered as source texts (hypothexts) and their derivations. This article seeks to reflect on the way in which the original story is expanded and enrichened.
Pier Paolo Pasolini is amongst the better-known Italian intellectuals internationally. His cinematic works have earned him an international reputation as a controversial and visionary artist, sometimes regarded as an intellectual born ahead of his time. This article aims to explore the symbiotic relationship that exists between contemporary Rome and Pasolini as a character. My starting premise is that the author has been an agent and a constitutive element for the configuration of Rome’s cultural memory, as it is shaped from the postwar years to this day. To develop these assumptions, I will focus on the analysis of some of the author’s cinematic productions, such as Accattone (1961), Mamma Roma (1962), and La ricotta (1963), known by the critics as la trilogia della borgata. I argue that Pasolini’s character nowadays holds a place of privilege regarding the constitution of Rome’s cultural memory. For that reason, towards the last part of this article, I will comment on some of the cultural and artistic expressions that, in my opinion, show how the author’s biography has become an element of popular culture. Specifically, I will focus on analyzing one of the many biopics produced about this author’s life: Pasolini (2014) by Abel Ferrara.

Around 1750, the philosophes began to consider themselves as the representatives of a new spiritual power destined to free reason once and for all from the “ecclesiastical yoke” and to guide “humanity” towards a new epoch of progress. The realization of this mission, however, would have been devoid of any foundation without the elaboration of a historical reflection capable of legitimizing the role that the hommes de lettres had begun to arrogate to themselves. Thus, this article sets out to explore the way in which the French Enlightenment was forced to grapple with a question whose posing goes back to medieval Christianity and which eighteenth-century thinkers inherited as an unavoidable debt—what is the meaning of history understood as a whole? It is a question of examining this “historical mortgage” through the study of one of the fundamental texts that tried to answer this question with the help of a set of new means: the Discours préliminaire by Jean Le Rond d’Alembert, published in 1751 at the head of the first volume of the Encyclopédie. The philosophy of history that D’Alembert outlines in this writing makes clear both the certainties and strategies of the Enlightenment and the tensions arising from its attempt to find a new conception of the historical process.
This paper presents an overview of graphic narratives about diseases (graphic pathographies) that capture health-disease-attention-care processes (HDACP) and that can be considered fictions based on real events, although they are not necessarily autobiographical stories. We point out some discursive mechanisms that serve to distinguish the factual from the fictional autocomic. Some self-contained graphic novels and short comics edited on paper or published on digital platforms during the last decade in Argentina that thematize some issue around health conditions are surveyed and synthetically analyzed. For this, we track the articulation of the authorial figure with that of narrator and character, mainly in the comics that we define as autocomic. This is an exploratory work that aims to build a corpus of initial analysis of graphic medicine in which we are interested in analyzing how the experiences of the self that narrates the health-disease-attention-care processes are articulated from a feminist approach. We also propose to think about these narratives that are located within the current of graphic medicine from an approach that we consider surpassing that of feminist graphic health, which relocates the stories in the perspective of patients and users of the health system that circulate these stories.
In the context of the 450th anniversary of the publication of Os Lusíadas, this article revisits the Camonian epic, its presence in the intellectual debates of the 18th and 19th centuries, and its contribution to the consolidation of Portuguese-speaking culture. For this purpose, we analyze testimonies in which the discussion around the model(s) of the epic intersects with opinions conveyed by Voltaire and the appropriation of Voltairian texts by commentators. The Essay on Epic Poetry, which marks a period when the author began to explore the domains of philosophy and history without abandoning his work as a poet, contains valuable material. The first version was published during Voltaire’s exile in England to pave the way for the publication of La Henriade. Controversies followed due to the publication of unauthorized translations and different versions until 1732, when he published his own (revised) version in French. Voltaire selected eight case studies—Homeric Poems, Virgil, Lucan, Tasso, Trissino, Ercilla, Camões, and Milton—and listed and compared their virtues and defects. On the other hand, Camões was criticized for mixing classical deities with religious entities and using unnecessary stylistic ornament. As for the Henriade, a poem that had translations into Portuguese since the 18th century, it is well known that it influenced the perception of what (and how) epic poetry should be, so its inclusion in these debates is not surprising.
“All water has perfect memory”: deslices y disonancias en Wake de Rebecca Hall
Haunted by the erasure of the slave experience in the United States, Rebecca Hall poses a counter-narrative from a comic-book format to disrupt official records in an act of restorative historical justice in her graphic narrative Wake: The Hidden History of Women-led Slave Revolts (2021), illustrated by Hugo Martínez. In this article, I propose a way to examine two aspects that structure a hybrid space between autobiography, historical imagination, and official records in Hall’s narrative. On the one hand, I place a close lens on the dissonance between image and text as a means to feature two versions of history simultaneously. On the other hand, I propose that the slippage between self-ocularization and historical imagination makes a historical witness out of Hall while creating an opportunity for her to craft a restorative counter-narrative. Through these resources, Hall evades the limits imposed by historical archives, as she grants tangibility to stories written on water since the juxtaposition between literal language, found in the written word, and figurative language, expressed through illustrations, make her graphic narrative a site of memory where the author challenges and questions an “official” history while envisioning gaps in history as part of a restorative act.
Published in English in 2019, Lost Children Archive was translated into Spanish as Desierto sonoro. In this novel, Valeria Luiselli weaves the story of a family’s journey across the United States with echoes of the massacre of Apaches throughout the nineteenth century and the hardships of thousands of Central American migrant children who try to reach the country of the “American dream.” With clear references to road trip novels, one of the most important elements in this novel is the archive as a literary theme and composition procedure. In line with various studies carried out on Desierto sonoro, in this article I propose an approach to the work based on the “archival paradigm,” which multiple contemporary artistic productions are part of, but focusing mainly on the visual elements that appear in the book: drawings, maps, and photographs. Also, to address the significant tensions produced between text and images, I resort to some of the proposals of multimodal studies applied to literature. In this way, I carry out a brief analysis of the structure of the work to then outline some of the elements of archive poetics, linking them with certain proposals of multimodal studies applied to literature.
