Measuring Efficiency of Non-Bank Financial Institutions in Bangladesh: A Non-Parametric Data Envelopment Approach

    Get PDF
The study aims to assess the efficiency of non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) in Bangladesh from 2016 to 2021 using non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA). Specifically, we evaluate technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency, and scale efficiency of 17 NBFIs. Our findings indicate that, despite some initial progress, the aggregate technical efficiency ratings of NBFIs have declined due to poor resource management, which is exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Only four NBFIs, namely ICB, GSP, IDCOL, and Fareast, were found to be fully efficient based on a separate efficiency test. The study recommends that both scale inefficiency and pure technical inefficiency must be increased through administrative effectiveness and scale of production

Liquidity Management and Profitability of Microfinance Institutions (MFIS) in the Midst of the Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon: Case of Mfis Affiliated to Mc2 Operating in the Crisis Zones of Cameroon

    Get PDF
Microfinance is a means of the struggle against poverty in developing countries in general and Cameroon in particular through financing activities that generate incomes for poor households especially those in the region hit by the Anglophone crisis. In order for these MFIs to continuously maintain their objective of poverty reduction, they need to be financially sustainable and liquidity management plays a very vital role in ensuring the sustainability of MFIs by guaranteeing profitability. This paper tries to examine if liquidity management affects the profitability of MFIs affiliated to MC2 in the midst of the ongoing Anglophone crisis especially MFIs operating in the crisis zones of Cameroon. Profitability was measured using return on asset, while Liquidity management was measured using cash ratio, current ratio and liquidity ratio. Data was collected from 70MFIs affiliated to MC2 which are located in the crisis zones and a methodology based on the estimation of panel data for the retained model and SPSS 11.0 was used to analyze data. The results show that there is a negative and significant effect of liquidity ratio on the profitability of MFIs, there is a negative but insignificant effect of current ratio on the profitability of MFIs, and it is seen that cash ratio significantly enhances MFI profitability. In addition, the coefficient of rural zone of residence was found to be negative (-0.00160) which implies that rural residence negatively affects MFI profitability. Overall, the applied model was globally significant at 1% level. Thus, liquidity management captured by liquidity ratio, current ratio and cash ratio alongside size of the MFI, Zone of residence and lending interest rate significantly explained MFIs profitability in the crisis zone. Based on the study’s findings, it is highly recommended that MFIs in the crisis zones of Cameroon must develop appropriate strategies to manage their liquidity in order to enhance their profits

Global Conflict Escalation During the Pandemic, Climate, and Economic Dilemmas: Healthcare Sustainability Challenges in Conflict Zones and Elsewhere

    Get PDF
Religion, governance, and politics—as well as related topics such as human rights, justice, and so on—have historically caused many of the world\u27s most significant conflicts, and they continue to do so because these issues are often the most fundamental in the structure of a society. To gain a military advantage, parties to armed conflicts have polluted water, burned crops, cut down forests, poisoned soils, and killed animals over the years. A variety of context factors, particularly socioeconomic conditions, governance, and political factors, interact and play a key role in translating climate change into conflict risks. The present unrest all over the world risks putting more than half of the countries into a crisis of health, economy, and social safety, which is the biggest threat to human civilization. The security and safety of healthcare facilities, workers, and supply lines remain paramount concerns along with access to health services, technology, and innovation

Is the C-Reactive Protein (CRP) test a Worthy Indicator of Inflammation?

    Get PDF
C-reactive protein (CRP) functions as an acute inflammatory protein, serving as an indicator of systemic inflammation. CRP originates from sites of inflammation or infection and can experience an increase of up to 1,000-fold in such regions. CRP exists in two forms: native CRP (nCRP), which is a homopentameric protein, and monomeric CRP (mCRP). mCRP is the result of the irreversible dissolution of nCRP into five separate monomers at sites of inflammation and infection. Although the liver\u27s hepatocytes are the primary producers of the CRP protein, it is also produced by a range of cells including smooth muscle cells, macrophages, endothelial cells, lymphocytes, and adipocytes. This article discusses the role of CRP in measuring inflammation for diagnostic purposes is unparalleled, solidifying its status as the \u27gold standard\u27 of inflammation markers

Laceration of the Left Renal Pelvisina Hydronephrotic Kidney After Blunt Abdominal Trauma - A Case Report

    Get PDF
Introduction: The kidney is one of the most frequently injured organs during blunt abdominal trauma, and the probability increases significantly if there is any renal pathology, such as hydronephrosis. The ureter Injury, which is extremely uncommon in blunt trauma, also increases its incidence in the presence of previous renal pathologies. Case report: Patient J.R.A, male, 30 years old, brought to the HMMSJP hemodynamically stable by SIATE after suffering a automobile x truck accident as a driver and the vehicle overturning. A contrast computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen, chest and skull CT scan showed a large retroperitoneal collection adjacent to the left kidney, with pelvis distension and a positive “claw sign”. It was concluded that the patient had grade V renal injury, and exploratory laparotomy was indicated. During surgery, a total lesion of the ureter was visualized approximately 10 cm from the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) with subsequent total left nephrectomy and distal ureter ligation. Discussion: in this case, the patient\u27s kidney was previously hydronephrotic, due to UPJ stenosis, being more prone to serious injuries in the trauma. There was also ureter injury, which is extremely uncommon in blunt trauma and should be treated as early as possible. Kidney injury should always be suspected in patients with a history of direct impact to the abdomen, with consequent CT scan. Patient management aims at hemodynamic stabilization, preservation of renal tissue and prevention of complications, which can be non-operative, if the injury is low-grade and hemodynamically stable, or surgical, if the injury is high-grade or hemodynamically unstable. Conclusion: Blunt kidney injury is more common in patients with previous renal alterations, while ureteral injuries are mostly due to iatrogenic events during surgery or penetrating trauma, being uncommon in blunt trauma. The correlation between anamnesis, physical examination and imaging tests is essential for the appropriate and individualized management of the patient

Professionalization of Agricultural Work in Benin

    No full text
Food availability is influenced by the means of production. A decrease in production affects market prices. In Benin, food production is changing. This paper seeks to analyze the influence of professionalization of work, the use of new technologies and individualism on agricultural production. Two data sources are used: the National Agricultural Census core module and the Harmonized Framework based on the World Food Programme food security survey, the results of the 2021-2022 agricultural season, the caloric proxy, shocks, historical variations in agricultural production, agricultural commodity prices, access to drinking water and improved toilets, and the seasonal calendar. Contributing factors related to food availability and access influence food consumption and livelihoods. On farms, 81.6% of farms are part-time with 2/12 months for non-professionals and 7-8/12 months for professionals. Respectively 2.0%, 6.9% and 11.9% keep accounting, have access to credit and are affiliated in agricultural producers\u27 organization
