Research among Forced Migrants in Poland from the Methodological Point of View and Ethical Perspectives

    Get PDF
The aim of the article is to identify ethical tensions between the cognitive function of science, humanitarian reasons for undertaking research work and its practical goals in research conducted among forced migrants. Differences between researchers and respondents in the dimensions of social, economic and political status determine the challenges of building ethical relationships, not only as meeting the imperative of & quot; do no harm & quot; by ensuring the safety of the subjects and protecting them from abuse. In a team composed of researchers with an external and internal status towards the studied group, we consider the possibilities of equalizing asymmetrical relationships, creating relationships based on mutual benefits and the involvement of respondents in the research process. The source of reflection is the analysis of research reports and the experience of own research work carried out among forced migrants by co-authors of this text

Age Invariant Face Recognition using Feature Level Fused Morphometry of Lip-Nose and Periocular Region Features

    Get PDF
Aging variation poses an interesting challenge for the task of automatic face recognition. Most face recognition studies that have addressed this problem focused on age estimation or aging simulation. Designing an appropriate feature representation and an effective matching framework for age invariant face recognition remains an open problem. In this research study, a novel age-invariant face recognition framework that is built based on two face biometric traits is proposed. The first trait is a set of anthropometric measurements acquired from the lip-nose complex. Lip-nose complex measurements have been known in several physiological studies to be discriminative among different ethnicities and among different genders within the same ethnicity. The second trait is based on extracting features of the periocular region using two robust descriptors, namely local binary patterns rotation invariant descriptor (LBPV) and GIST descriptors. The periocular area is considered as the most discriminative face area and is known to preserve its stability with aging. The two biometric face traits were combined at the feature level after being normalized separately using the Z-score rule and projected into a principle component analysis (PCA) subspace. Eight algorithms were derived as part of the proposed framework for performing age invariant face verification and identification.  Furthermore, the proposed framework was used to produce demographic information, namely: age group, gender, and ethnicity from aging faces. Experimental results show that the proposed framework reported an EER of 6.51% over the MORPH album 2 database (compared to 16.49% reported by Mahalingam et al), which is the largest public face aging database and 7.22% over the FG-NET database (compared to 24.08% reported by Mahalingam et al). The proposed framework achieved an identification accuracy of more than 95% (compared to 66.40% reported by Park et al) over the MORPH album 2 database, which is the largest public face aging database and 93% over the FG-NET database (compared to 38.10% reported by Geng et al ).

Visualization Tool for Data Structures in Real Time

    Get PDF
Data structures are crucial aspects of Computer Science, but grasping their abstract nature poses challenges for students and software developers. A visualization tool for data structures such as arrays, stacks, and trees would effectively simplify the complex nature of data structures and algorithms. This research utilized an object-oriented approach to create a real-time Visualization Tool for Data Structures. This tool offers visual representations of fundamental data structures such as arrays and trees. The visualization tool is web-based and developed with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript technologies. The tool\u27s efficacy underwent evaluation using complexity metrics. Results notably demonstrate that as the volume of data increases, the complexity of data structures follows suit. Consequently, this paper serves as an informative resource concerning the selection of data types and their respective implementation styles within data structures. Such insights furnish developers with valuable knowledge regarding the efficiency of diverse data types in software development, empowering informed decisions when choosing between data types based on their impact on space complexities within data structures

Disadvantages and Stimulants of Mobility in a Shared Bicycle System in Guayaquil, Ecuador

    Get PDF
Interest in urban cycling is increasing and the number of bike share programs has grown rapidly in recent years. Therefore, the objective that is intended to be achieved in this study is to know if factors such as seasons, routes and altitudes affect the project of a shared bicycle system in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. A quantitative and longitudinal study has been designed with the collection and analysis of data from the bicycle-sharing system (BSS) of the city of Guayaquil, registering a total of 84,183 observations (Men n=59,159; Women n=25,024). The data extracted from the Iguana Bike Tours organization was collected and statistically analyzed through the IBM SPSS version 21.0 program. A significance value of p < 0.05 has been established. The most used station was the one located in the center of the city, representing a total of 39% of the observations. The neutral elevation, that is, leaving a station and depositing the bicycle in another with the same altitude, represented 65.5% of the total records. The city of Guayaquil has some favorable topographical characteristics to create a profitable service that promotes healthy habits as a means of active transportation in the urban environment, as well as an improvement in urban mobility and a less polluted environment

A Multiple Contracts Version of the SACRE

    Get PDF
In 1996, the Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF), which is the main institution for housing financing in Brazil, introduced a debt amortization scheme named “Sistema de Amortizações Reais Crescentes” – SACRE (system of increasing amortizations in real terms). In its original version, this very peculiar amortization system is not financially consistent. Namely, even if all contractual payments are dutifully made, a residual debt remains, which must be paid in full by the borrower, usually one month after the end of the term of the contract.Given that de Faro and Lachtermacher (2022) proposed a financially consistent variant of the SACRE, the purpose of this paper is to formulate a multiple contracts version of this system. Similar to cases of the adoption of either the constant payments scheme or the constant amortization scheme of debt financing, which were considered in De-Losso et al (2013) and in de Faro (2022), it will be shown that the financial institution granting the loan, depending on its cost of capital, may derive substantial income tax reductions in terms of present values

Background: Depression is widely a spread global mental health problem, and continues to be among the most challenging health concerns among students. Globally, there are higher rates of depression among university students than the general population, even in Uganda. Objective: This study was aimed at exploring the knowledge, attitude and perceptions about depression among Clarke International University students. Methods: The study was descriptive in nature and was based on the cross-sectional design. It was conducted among 150 students of Clarke International University students who were randomly selected from the different courses offered at the university. Data was collected through self-administered questionnaire using a well-designed and structured questionnaire. Results: Majority of the study respondents, 88(58.7%) were aged 20 – 25 years, and 98(65.3%) of them were female. All study respondents, 150(100.0%) had ever heard about depression. However, majority of them, 112(74.7%) were only partially knowledgeable about depression, with only 38(25.3%) of them having good knowledge about depression. Majority, 97(64.7%) indicated that they would never admit to friends if they had depression, 129(86.0%) would never admit to colleagues if they had depression, while 75(50.0%) felt uncomfortable talking to a person with depression.Majority, 85(56.7%) had the perception that people with depression may feel guilty when they are not at fault; 91(60.7%) felt that depression leads to loss of confidence and poor self-esteem, while 77(51.3%) were of the view that people with depression often hear voices that are not there. Conclusion: The study found that while awareness about depression was high among the university students, majority of them were only partially knowledgeable about this condition, and this negatively influenced their attitudes and perceptions about depression.Recommendations: The university administration should put in place and support measures of improving knowledge about depression among university students, and government of Uganda, through the National Council for Higher Education, should come up a policy that compels universities and higher learning institutions to incorporate depression information dissemination into orientation programs for all students joining these institution

INTRODUCTION: Pseudo-papillary and solid tumors of the pancreas are rare tumours, of uncertain etiopathogenes is. We report the difficulty of managing a pseudopapillary tumor in our country, where resources were limited. Our objective was to discuss the therapeutic management in relation to the literature. OBSERVATION: This is a 19 year old young women. View in consultation for chronic abdominal pain, without family neoplastic history. Abdominal palpation revealed an intra-abdominal mass syndrom. Abdominal computed tomography had shown a heterogeneous solidocystic tumor mass in the corporeo-caudal region, well encapsulated, well limited, without infiltration, without peripheral lymph nodes with homogeneous contrast uptake, without vascular invasion or remote secondary location. This allowed us to decide on pancreatic enucleation by laparotomy. The diagnosis was confirmed by histological study of the surgical specimen. The evolution was favorable without remote metastasis or recurrence after two years of follow-up
