Interwoven Threads: Ecology, Feminism, and Cultural Critique in Arundhati Roy\u27s the God of Small Things

    Get PDF
Convergingupon the degradation of several sides of our environment and culture Arundhati Roy as an activist shows her concern in her novel The God of Small Things over all kinds of oppression resulted from the devastating consequence of the global market, development happened without sustainable thought and the locus of women in the postcolonial society. Roy highlights the necessity of social, economic and environmental justice for oppressed women, marginalised human beings and nature. Patriarchal categories always ignore productive and sustainable activities and adore unproductive activities and so development which creates uneven structures and environmental poverty is assessed as mal-development. Roy focuses on how hierarchical development and commercial development together damage the entire ecology of Ayemenem where Ammu and her twinsRahel and Estha are victimised most. The emergence of westernisation not only affects Indian culture and nature leading towards profit-orientedviewpoint but seizesthe purity and wilderness embedded in it also. Therefore, this novel aims at showing Roys presentation of women, culture and nature from the viewpoint of ecology and feminism

What can we Learn from the UN Mission in Mali. Contribution to the Future of Peacekeeping

    Get PDF
The Sahel-region is facing a major crisis that we hardly seem to notice, because the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza are drawing much more of our attention. It is not only a pity, but also could turn out to be a strategic mistake. The stability in the region is strongly affected by jihadist motivated movements, such as Islamic State (IS). In addition, there are geopolitical influences in the region, such as Russian involvement e.g., that are not necessarily adding to better stability. In the period 2022-2023 I was the Force Commander in the Mission Multidimensionnelle Intgre des Nations Unies pour la Stabilisation au Mali (MINUSMA). Although the mission was mandated for Mali, the situation in Mali cannot be seen separate from the increasing problems in the entire Sahel-region. In this article I will share my views on lessons we can draw from MINUSMA especially in the context of the UNs work on the future of peacekeeping. I sincerely recognize the fact that I cannot be extensive and I also strongly voice upfront that we should do thorough in-depth analysis on all the lessons coming from MINUSMA before drawing conclusions. The UN has taken care of the latter with an independent study The Future of Peacekeeping, New Models, and Related Capabilities published in November 2024. This study was a starting point for a trajectory leading up to a ministerial conference 13-14 May this year on the Future of UN Peacekeeping. MINUSMA unfortunately has ended in December 2023 because the Malian government has asked the UN to end the mission. I will first say a few words about the complexity of the situation in Mali, followed by the background of the UN mission MINUSMA and its mandate. After that I will discuss some relevant lessons emerging from my experience as Force Commander, before giving my thoughts on the future of peacekeeping

Integrated Risk Management in Railway Construction Projects: Evaluating Health, Safety, and Environmental Risks

    Get PDF
An evaluation of the risks influencing project performance was conducted in the railway construction industry in the Eastern area of Nigeria in order to reduce the risks connected with a specific activity and the potential for worker harm. The data obtained from a self-administered questionnaire survey of the construction industries was calculated using the Likert scale and the mean index formula following a brief instruction on health, safety, and environmental culture in the industry. Using a qualitative approach to data analysis and a matrix analysis table, the amount of risk was ascertained. Six categories of hazards, together with their subcategories, were chosen from construction-related projects based on the literature that was mentioned. To ensure that every company in the research region was equally represented, three firms were chosen at random from each state. Employees in the chosen construction industry received 160 questionnaires in total. 44 did not answer for a variety of reasons, bringing the sample size down to 116. A rate of 72.5% for the respondent was found. Within two months, the distribution and collection were completed. Using Cronbach\u27s alpha reliability coefficient, which gauges the consistency of elements in question answers, reliability tests were run on each risk scale. Social, political, and construction hazards are the riskiest of the six categories of risk mentioned. The findings are consistent with the literature, which shows that the most common dangers in the construction sectors within the analyzed locations are poor safety performance and a lack of understanding of safety regulation

Use of Mandacaru Cactus (Cereus Jamacaru) to Remove Methylene Blue Dye from Wastewater

    Get PDF
The present work deals with the use of the mandacaru cactus as an adsorbent material for the process of adsorption of the methylene blue dye present in wastewater, since this is an agricultural material of little applicability, used mainly in animal feed. In this sense, the mandacaru cactus was previously treated and applied in the process of removing this dye, evaluating the effects of the initial concentration of the pollutant, dosage of the adsorbent and adsorbent/adsorbate contact time. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was further studied by applying the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order models to the data obtained from the contact time parameter. The entire process was evaluated using UV-vis spectrophotometry as an analysis technique. The results obtained showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 36.18 mg/g, with a removal rate greater than 90%, presenting a mostly chemical process

The Impact of Multi-Party Cooperation on Chinas Democratization Process

    Get PDF
Political parties play a crucial role in a democratic country, not only in running for and governing in elections, but also as the cornerstone of democratic politics, playing an important role in guiding social thinking, representing public opinion, mediating conflicts and promoting social progress in many ways. From the perspective of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the paper argues through case studies that the role of political parties in a democratic state is multi-faceted. Political parties are not just organisations that participate in elections and govern, but should also be the cornerstone of democratic politics, playing important roles such as guiding social thinking, representing public opinion, mediating conflicts and advancing social progress. Political parties should be concerned with the interests of the people, co-ordinate various interests and promote social harmony. At the same time, political parties should also actively participate in law-making, government supervision and policy proposals, contributing to the development of the country and its people. Finally the paper argues that in a democracy, the development and growth of political parties is key, because only the pluralistic development of political parties can provide more choices for the people and promote political stability and development

Confronting Challenges in Foresight: Deciphering the Intricate Relationship between CPA and Strategy in Higher Education Institutions

    Get PDF
The intersection between institutional evaluation and strategy is an underexplored field in scientific literature, characterized by the lack of studies deeply investigating this relationship. This article aims to fill this gap, identifying the critical variables that restrict the participation of the Self-Assessment Commissions (CPAs) in the strategic anticipation process in higher education institutions. The literature review covers the main authors who discuss the practice of foresight and those who analyze the relationship between evaluation and strategic planning in academic environments. Using a mixed-methods approach, focusing on descriptive statistics and the coding proposed by Grounded Theory, this study highlights the lack of incentive for the strategic participation of CPAs - the main quality assurance in Brazilian higher education - on the part of the investigated institutions. The conclusions highlight theoretical and practical contributions, especially by pointing out the critical conditions that can be used by institutions to improve the strategic training

    Visible Infinity

    Get PDF
There can only ever have been, or that will ever continue to be one infinite visible physical condition that has endured, and will continue to endure eternally. The physicists contention that visible matter and invisible dark matter and empty space have somehow managed to coexist at the same time after the supposedly finite big bang explosive commencement of the universe billions of light years ago is utterly invalid. There could never have been any empty space. The visible space bar on a visible keyboard does not add a space between visible words. Depressing it merely adds an extended contrast in hue between the letters of the words. There is no empty space between the stars and the planets. There is merely a contrast in visible physical appearance. As there are an infinite number of visible stars, there is no way they could be assembled in only finite types. There is no way that any two stars could be separated by billions of finite miles of empty space. All one has to do is look up at the night sky in order to visually verify that the glaring neon white stars are clearly in view seen against the stark contrast of the visible black sky
