    Comparative Evaluation of Different Blood Collection Sites for the Assessment of Beta-Hydroxybutyric Acid Concentrations Using a Handheld Meter in Sheep

    Hyperketonaemia is a common problem in periparturient sheep. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of FreeStyle Optium Neo H (FS) for measuring blood beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) concentrations in sheep. Whole-blood BHBA concentrations were measured using the FS from the jugular and ear veins of 175 clinically healthy, late-gestation (n = 56) and postparturient (n = 119) ewes. Jugular blood serum samples were also used for the reference sampling site. Blood BHBA concentrations measured with the FS from the jugular and ear veins showed a high positive correlation with the serum concentrations measured using the reference method (r = 0.84, r = 0.81, respectively). According to the Bland-Altman plot and limits of agreement, when compared to the reference method, FS recorded lower BHBA concentrations of 0.03 and 0.04 mmol/L from the jugular and ear veins, respectively. Passing-Bablok regression analysis revealed an intercept of -0.125 (95% CI: -0.148 to -0.078) and a slope of 1.250 (95% CI: 1.111-1.304) for the jugular vein and an intercept of -0.005 (95% CI: -0.089 to -0.018) and a slope of 1.000 (95% CI: 0.909-1.111) for the ear vein. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis determined that the optimal thresholds of the FS for the jugular and ear veins were, respectively, >= 0.8 mmol/L (sensitivity, 87.5%; specificity, 97.6%, AUC, 0.896) and >= 0.6 mmol/L (sensitivity, 87.5%; specificity, 91.0%, AUC, 0.887) for the identification of sheep with pregnancy toxaemia (PT). In conclusion, although there was constant and proportional errors indicating non-agreement with the reference method in the Passing-Bablok regression equation, FS's diagnostic performance was good enough to identify ewes with PT or hyperketonaemia

    Extracorneal connective tissue alterations in keratoconus: ultrasonographic evaluation of tendon, plantar fascia, and cartilage

    Purpose: Structures such as the cornea, Achilles tendon (AT), plantar fascia (PF), and cartilage share the common feature of containing collagen and being associated with collagenous tissue disorders. However, the relationship between keratoconus and AT and PF thicknesses has not been investigated before. The importance of this study lies in the potential to identify a link between keratoconus and conditions such as Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, or osteoarthritis. Methods: This prospective, comparative study includes 33 keratoconus patients and 33 age- and gender-matched controls. AT, PF, talar cartilage (TC), and distal femoral cartilage (DFC) thicknesses were obtained by ultrasound (US). US parameters of the study and control groups were compared. Results: The mean AT and PF thicknesses were significantly higher in the study group (p = 0.002 and p 0.05, for all). Conclusion: This study clearly demonstrates that patients with keratoconus have significant PF, tendon and cartilage thickness abnormalities. Keratoconus patients may have a tendency to develop conditions such as Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, or osteoarthritis

    THE ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING

    This study intends to investigate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in teaching English as a foreign language from the perspective of experienced lecturers. The study examines how AI is being used in course content preparation and delivery and what implications it might have for the future of instructional roles and student involvement. The data were collected from seven lecturers working at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University School of Foreign Languages, using a five-item open-ended semi-structured questionnaire regarding their level of AI proficiency, instructional uses, observed educational outcomes, student use and prospective predictions. The data were analysed using a qualitative content analysis. The results show that the lecturers incorporate AI tools, particularly ChatGPT, to create weekly, grade-by-grade reading-focused materials, such as reading comprehension and vocabulary exercises. Moreover, it was concluded that AI enables students to produce creative results, as demonstrated by their utilisation of portals like Canva for their assignments. Furthermore, lecturers consider AI to be a very time-efficient and effective educational tool, especially in terms of creating personalized course content. Nevertheless, moral concerns have also been raised about the rapid development of AI posing a threat to human teaching and its role in education. These results demonstrate the important role of AI in education in terms of student creativity and positive impact on teachers’ teaching practices, while the ethical implications highlight the need for balanced adoption of AI in education.Key words: Artificial intelligence, foreign language, AI tools</p
