To evaluate subjective health of first year students. To analyze anthropometric parameters of first year students. To evaluate nutrition habits and associations with anthropometric parameters. To analyze physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption of first year students and associations with subjective health and nutrition habits. Methods. Cross-sectional survey was performed among first-year students in JSC National Medical University. A standardized anonymous questionnaire was used in this study. There were 200 participants, 132 females and 68 males. Health behavior was measured with questions on socio-economic parameters, general health behavior, anthropometric parameters, nutrition habits (breakfast, fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and cheese, cereals, sweets, fast food, and soft drinks), and harmful habits (tobacco, alcohol , and drugs use). Statistical data was analyzed using SPSS/24.0 program for Social sciences for data accumulation and analysis. Results. Major part of first year students subjective health is good and reasonable good (72%), while approximate half of participants take care about their health at least at some extent. Around 25% of students visited doctor once a 12 month, with the main reasons - sickness. Females’ visits were more often for preventive checkup. The most common complaints were headaches, nervousness, diarrhea and depression. More than 70% of males and female have normal BMI. The number of underweight females was more prevalent than males (23.5% and 1.5%), while number of overweight or obese males was prevailing females (22.1% and 3.8%). More than 80% of underweight females evaluated their weight as normal. Majority (62%) of all study participants consider eating healthy as important or very important. One-third of females and slightly above 22% of males eat breakfast every day, average fruits consumption is 2±0.98 servings a day, more common among girls. Most of first year students do not follow dietary recommendations. Females are more likely to eat healthy than males. 27.3% of women and 23.5% of men had a diet index that corresponds to a healthy diet. Approximately 50% of first year students performed physical active at least several times a week. Students spent in average 9.4±3.4 sitting hours, and 7.4±1.7 hours sleeping. 87.5 % of all study participants never smoked cigarettes; proportion of daily smokers was 2.5%. Most of first-year students never used alcohol in the last three months, however 7% of them drank alcohol one or more times a month. The most common drinks were beer and wine. Conclusions. Majority of students evaluated their health as good or reasonable good, but their lifestyle habits are not healthy: part of students do not follow nutrition recommendations, are not enough physically active, do not sleep enough time, have high sedentary behavior level. However just minority of them use tobacco and alcohol

Aim of the study: to determine the short-term and long-term results of liver transplantation in children, which were followed-up in the Lithuanian Health Sciences University hospital Kaunas Clinics, Clinic of Children‘s Diseases, based on the clinic, laboratory tests. Objectives of the study: to determine the frequency of infections in the early period – the first year – after pediatric liver transplantation. To identify non–infectious complications in the early period – the first year – after pediatric liver transplantation. To assess complications in the late period, one year and more after transplantation. To evaluate the growth and development of the child.Methodology: a retrospective study was performed and data from medical histories of children after liver transplantation were analyzed. Analyzed: blood test (assessed by age); biochemical parameters – C reactive protein, renal function indicators; number of Cytomegalovirus and Epstein–Barr virus nucleic acid copies. Patients’ growth rates – height and weight – before and after transplantation were evaluated. A case study was performed. Results: medical histories of 8 children were analyzed. There were 4 girls and 4 boys. The most common early complications were vascular – 3 (37,5%) cases and acute organ rejection – 3 (37,5%) cases. Furthermore 4 patients developed respiratory or circulatory disorders. CMV infections were particularly common in the early period – 4 (50%) patients. In the late period occurred: adenoid and tonsil pathology, 5 (62%) and 4 (50%) cases respectively; blood changes: anemia (n=4), neutropenia (n=2), thrombocytopenia (n=2); infections. In the early post–transplant period the growth of some patients was slower, possibly due to use of corticosteroids and additional interventional procedures. Now most of the patients feel well, the growth of all children has reached the norm. Conclusions: CMV infection is the most common early infectious complication after liver transplantation. Most non–infectious complications occurred in the first month after transplantation and the most common were vascular complications and acute organ rejection. In the late period the most prevalent were pathologies of adenoids and tonsils, infections and changes in the blood: anemia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. Children’s growth and development improved after liver transplantation – all children exceeded the 3rd percentile threshold. Slower growth was more common in children who used corticosteroids or had a higher number or frequency of interventional procedures

The management of SAP has been shifted from a past that involved aggressive approaches such as early surgical interventions, liberal antibiotics usage and aggressive fluid resuscitation to now follow a more restricted and conservative methodology. The importance in the ICU setting is to always work for supporting vital organ systems, particularly the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. Nutritional support, management of infections and pain are also critical areas that increase patient survival

The Impact of Lower Airway Foreign Body Presence Duration on Respiratory System Related Alterations in Children

    No full text
Airway foreign bodies are responsible for over 17 000 visits to the emergency departments for children younger than 14 years old in the United States of America. Nevertheless, sometimes choking episode is unwitnessed and therefore later complications might lead to some concerning consequences and even death. Some researches study the presence duration of foreign bodies in lower airways trying to link it to the occurring outcomes but there are only a few studies that try to identify how lower airway foreign bodies impact respiratory system related alterations and when does it start. This study aimed to evaluate whether the presence duration of foreign bodies in children lower airways has an impact on the onset time of respiratory tract symptoms, signs, and complications

The aim of the study was to investigate the occurrence of Campylobacter spp. in chilled and marinated ready-to-cook broiler products sold at retail stores during 2018 – 2019 and determine the factors of molecular antibiotic resistance. One of the largest producers of Lithuanian poultry was chosen for the research and the research samples were bought from a supermarket twice per month from October 2018 to October 2019. The broiler products were tested with respect to the Campylobacter found on the surface. The detection and isolation of the Campylobacter were carried out using the direct (disseminating in the mCCDA agar medium) and enrichment (Bolton’s broth) methods. The modified Wang et al. (2002) method was used to identify the species of the Campylobacter. The antibiotic resistance-related genes and methods described by Obeng et al. (2012) and Mackiw et al. (2012) were chosen for the evaluation of the antibiotic resistance of the Campylobacter. The study revealed that 19 samples out of 95 tested samples (i.e. 20 % of all the tested products) produced by the Lithuanian poultry producer and purchased at the retail stores were infected with the Campylobacter. The contamination of Campylobacter was detected in 30.4 % of chilled drumsticks, 20.8 % of chilled wings, 16.7 % of marinated wings, and 12.5 % of marinated drumsticks. It was determined that the contamination of Campylobacter in broiler products depended on the sampling time (p<0.01). The infected broiler products had the following species of the Campylobacter: 12.6 % of C. jejuni, 1.1 % of C. coli, 6.3 % of Campylobacter spp. A total of 13 tested samples with C. jejuni and C. coli species had antibiotic resistance to tetracycline (69.2 %) and ciprofloxacin (46.2 %)

Aim of the study. To determine the need and the availability of psichosocial support for patients with multiple sclerosis. Objectives. To reveal the need of psychological support of patients with multiple sclerosis; to reveal the need of social assistance of patients with multiple sclerosis; to reveal the availability of psychological support of patients with multiple sclerosis; to reveal the availability of social support of patients with multiple sclerosis. Methods. Qualitative research method was chosen because of its broader opportunities in finding deeper aspects and problems in this research topic which has been considered as new till today. For the gathering of the data, an in- depth, semi- structured interview method was chosen. The interviews were conducted with patients with multiple sclerosis who have at least 5 years of disease- related experience. Total 8 interview were conducted. Results. The data of the qualitative study have revealed that the ensured the psychological support and social assistance significantly improve mental and physical well-being for patients with multiple sclerosis. The data of study also revealed that organized and operational support is ineffective and inefficient at the moment. Conclusions. The multiple sclerosis is constantly progressing disease resulting in patients being highly affected by its psychologically. Therefore constant and targeted psychological support is necessary measure that significantly improves the mental and physical well-being for patients with multiple sclerosis. The data of study have revealed that social assistance including all considered social aspects is necessary for patients with multiple sclerosis for successful engagement of patients in management of their disease. The study showed that organized psychological support is for patients with multiple sclerosis is insufficient and ineffective due to the fact that it is non- specialized in the nature of multiple sclerosis and is performed without an individual case analysis. The study showed that patients do not feel full members of society, due to the faulty public attitude towards them, also they experience the lack of communications with doctors as well as the lack of information that plays a key role in a successful social assistance experience. Social conditions that allow the patient to adapt to the environment, ensuring her/his involvement in the society are still not ensured. The study highlighted the dependence and inseparability of psychological and social care in the hope of aid effectiveness and efficiency
