Cine-archaeology of the camp: Olivier Zuchuat\u27s Like Stone Lions at the Gateway into Night (2012)

    No full text
From 1947 to 1950, during the height of the Greek Civil War, over 50,000 political dissidents, mostly Communists, were exiled to Makronisos, a small Greek island located close to the Peloponnese peninsula. Members of the military and civilians were held here in mass detention camps to undergo what was officially called a form of \u27\u27moral re-education\u27\u27 and \u27\u27rehabilitation\u27\u27. Today, the camps are no longer existent; only a few derelict buildings remain. These ruins form the starting point for Swiss filmmaker Olivier Zuchuat and his cinearchaeological journey into the island\u27s traumatic history. In his cinematic essay Like Stone Lions at the Gateway into Night (2012) Zuchuat proposes a broader political reading of the camp as both symptom and laboratory of a larger "antipolitical" system that pervades modernity in form of totalitarian terror and dehumanizing logics. In my reading of his film I recur on this larger political reading of the camp, or what Griselda Pollock and Max Silverman in a series of co-edited volumes have called the concentrationary. Zuchuat\u27s cinematic essay, I suggest here, constitutes a form of visual art that resists – although haunted by the virtualities of other camps – the concentrationary through a range of creative gestures. By means of an avant-garde aesthetics, figurative language, alliance with French film essayists such as Alain Resnais and Jean-Daniel Pollet, who have addressed corresponding forms of structural violence in the past, as well as the cinemanufacturing of multilayered sound and voices, echoes of totalitarian terror become palpable. Practices and logics of human destruction can be traced, to the extent that they are also being resisted, both aesthetically and politically. The legacies of an-other Europe – one that is marked by collective trauma and silenced resistance – become \u27\u27visible\u27\u27

A Feminist Space at Leeds: collective reflections on an \u27\u27Event\u27\u27

    No full text
A Feminist Space at Leeds: Looking Back to Think Forward was a symposium held at the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds on 16-17 December 2017. The event brought together scholars, pedagogues, activists and artists to critically examine – through papers, conversations and performances – the diverse and rich intellectual and creative work which has developed in conversation with Griselda Pollock\u27s writings and teaching. As an event, however, A Feminist Space at Leeds was not simply a two-day symposium that occurred in December 2017. For us, the organisers, it began over a year before, initiated while reflecting together on the forthcoming anniversary of Griselda Pollock\u27s forty years teaching at the University of Leeds. What is more, the symposium gave a name to a different kind of event that has had a much longer history at Leeds

Cum de n-a înţeles Ibsen femeile?

    No full text
Ibsen\u27s receptiveness to women\u27s issues made him a perfect candidate for the title of "male feminist." Today this label is often still attached to him, though according to current standards it raises controversy among feminist scholars. Ibsen himself refuted his literary solidarity with the alreadyblooming movement for women\u27s emancipation. He claimed to be a supporter of human rights rather thanwomen\u27s rights. This article briefly examines the historical and cultural context of Ibsen\u27s work, including his dramatic characters, in order to argue that Ibsen\u27s actual obsession was the crisis of masculinity in the modern society of his time. Female protagonists only provided a background for the depiction of this crisis. Ibsen\u27s later work reveals a partial awareness of his own limitations regarding a proper understanding of women

Farocki/ Didi-Huberman. Lisibilité des images et pédagogie critique

    No full text
How should one place oneself within the present iconosphere, at a time when everything seems to be hyper documented? What can be done with the plethora of images surrounding us? And is there anything left for us to read in these objects that have already been discussed over and over again? The filmmaker Harun Farocki hangs on to the belief that his documentaries can make images speak in new and different ways. Also, while traditional iconology sees the image as a crossword puzzle with only one possible interpretation, Georges Didi-Huberman argues for a critical montage aiming to restore the openness of the images in order to deploy their multiple meanings. What is at stake here is the very construction of "the eye of history," an alternative viewpoint allowing for a kind of reading that would free the document from the strictures of homogenizing interpretations. The montage as understood by Didi-Huberman restores the complexity of the visual, thus placing itself in stark opposition to traditional authoritarian approaches. This paper explores the role of a "pedagogy of the document" in liberating knowledge from automatized modes of reading

Digital inclusion for vulnerable community in urban areas: skills enhancement for students in Islamic Boarding School

    No full text
This research is a study related to digital inclusion strategies at the Al Ashriyyah Nurul Iman Foundation in Parung, Bogor, which provides free education for vulnerable children from underprivileged families in urban areas. With the advancement of technology, vulnerable groups face challenges in the form of inequalities in access to essential services. Inclusive digitalisation is considered capable of overcoming this inequality, as it can be a tool for empowering marginalised communities. Using descriptive qualitative methods, data was collected through interviews with eight alumni and the head of the Islamic boarding school, as well as observation and document review. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in the data. The results of this study indicate that these boarding schools implement digital inclusion strategies by providing technology training, internet access, and the use of digital platforms. These initiatives improve digital skills and ultimately enhance the digital technical capabilities of students from underprivileged backgrounds, thereby increasing their opportunities in the world of work. The implications of this research highlight the importance of developing a digital inclusion model that promotes independence and can be adopted by other educational institutions, especially those in urban areas. In addition, this research emphasises the urgency of equipping vulnerable populations with digital skills to facilitate their integration into an increasingly digital society

Highland-lowland interaction in mountain regions: a study of changing patterns among Bhotiya tribes of Garhwal Himalaya

    No full text
The highland-lowland interaction among the Bhotiya tribes is a centuries-old tradition. Bhotiyas generally have two dwellings, one in the highland and one in the lowland. During winter, when the highland areas are covered with vast amounts of snow, the tribes migrate to their valley dwellings. Similarly, they migrate to the highland villages during the summer to cultivate the land and graze their animals. The trend of highland-lowland interaction has been changing, mainly declining over time. This study examines thesechanges. A case study of eight villages of the Niti Valley was conducted, and a total of 292 Bhotiya households were surveyed. The authors have noticed that the practice of highlandlowland interaction decreased by 55% during the last two decades. The main drivers of change were increased education, cultural differences, reservation policies for Bhotiyas, increasing disasters in the highlands, lagging infrastructural facilities, and changes in climatic conditions. The study suggests that agriculture, livestock development, andimproved infrastructure - transportation, education, markets, and employment - can revive the highland-lowland interaction. The role of the state government and the community is noteworthy to conserve the traditional practices of Bhotiyas

The semantics of space and time of the far right. A neopragmatic study of landscape interpretation by generative AI

    No full text
Mediatisation, digitisation and algorithmisation irritate society. New possibilities of communication using AI potentiate forms of self-description and self-observation and serve, among other things, to influence politics. In this study, we investigate the question of the extent to which landscape-related visualisations of the extreme right can be accessed via generative AI and how semantics of space and time are constructed through data. The case study is based on an exploratory study (Frankenberger et al., 2024) and visualises landscape based on the electoral program of a right-wing populist German party in 2021. While a closed image of landscape and society is computed, the visualisation of a neutral prompt shows an open development. The results are analysed in terms of syntax, semantics and pragmatics and interpreted from a neopragmatist and systems theory perspective. It becomes apparent that the computation of semantics of space and time is contingent and reduces complexity and that it is required to access these reflexively

Secondary school leaders’ lack of knowledge of abuse in adolescent intimate partner relationships in Northern Ireland, a post-conflict region

    No full text
This paper explores secondary school leaders’ knowledge, specifically lack of knowledge, about abuse in adolescent intimate romantic relationships in Northern Ireland (NI), a post-conflict society. It is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with 14 participants (principals, deputy-principals, senior teachers - all pastoral leads). There were participants who did not recognize that abuse may exist in adolescent relationships, or that adolescents may have romantic relationships, thus focusing their school’s prevention activities on adult relationships. Findings and implications are discussed within the silencing structures of the NI context. The paper identifies the need to reconceptualize school prevention efforts to encompass both youth and adult relationships and emphasizes the need for systemic change

The Far East Region – The stumbling block in Sino-Russian relations?

    No full text
This paper aims to analyse the state of play of Sino-Russian relations in regard to the Russian Far East region. Within the political geography approach, we analyse the historical and current relations between Russia and China in relation to the partial components, such as history, demography, economics, and politics, of the Far East region. We argue that the Far East region plays a crucial role in shaping future Sino-Russian relations, and the potential alliance between China and Russia will depend on broader and more complex, multidimensional relations. The asymmetric demographic and economic development in the border area, as well as migration, are fundamental limitations to cooperation. Therefore, China has apparent leverage over Russia and a comfortable position in terms of trade and demographics. The Russian aggression against Ukraine will show how healthy and permanent the current relationship is

This paper explores two landscapes from Michoacán, México, Tacámbaro andArio de Rosales, from a humanistic geography perspective. Specifically, the landscapes areanalysed following three key concepts, known as elsewhereness, placelessness andpersonality, observing how they intertwine with each other. The overarching articulatedargument is that while every town shares their sameness, including its epitome districts, asthey are all built by the city mapping model imposed by the king, Philip II, they also createa sense of elsewhereness, placelessness and have their personality. The Spanish townGrazalema is included in this analysis to share its sameness
