S NOVEL LAURUS: ARTISTIC TIME IN OLD RUSSIAN HAGIOGRAPHY AND IN EVGENY VODOLAZKIN’S NOVEL LAURUS

    No full text
This article examines the representation of narrative time in Evgeny Vodolazkin’s novel Laurus in comparison with temporal concepts in Old Russian hagiography. The study begins with an overview of narrative time within contemporary narrative theory, establishing a general theoretical framework for the subsequent analysis. It then turns to the representation of time in the context of Old Russian hagiography, focusing on two key aspects: Dmitry Likhachov’s concept of timeless, eternal time, in which meaningful events coexist outside chronology, and A.F. Uzhankov’s models of linear and cyclical time in Old Russian literature. The study reveals that Vodolazkin adopts the poetics of hagiographic time, preserving the categories of timelessness and linear progression while transforming the cyclical model into a spiral one, where recurring events gain new meaning through the protagonist’s inner transformation. The article concludes by discussing how Laurus both aligns with and challenges the conventions of the modern novel through its genre hybridity and other characteristic features

Art and Cultural Trauma in Griselda Pollock: to Recover Humanity

    No full text
In this paper I summarize some of the very significant contributions that Griselda Pollock has made in regard to the role that art can perform, in relation to the recognition of affections, the integration of collective traumatic memories, and the resulting possibility of the reconstruction of our contemporary societies devastated by extreme and varied types of violence. I conclude that her conceptualization of the traumatic character of our contemporary society goes beyond the academic field, since it can help us to resist the dramatic dehumanization to which we are conducted by the expansion of extreme violence in all its perverse ways

    Gândirea fasmidă

Throughout his work, Georges Didi-Huberman has practiced a new style of thinking we suggest to call "phasmid thinking." Like those strange insects going by that very name (or sometimes also known as "ghost insects"), the phasmid approach involves a radical change of perspective with respect to the traditional attitude of the critic. Rather than talking about the object, from a poised and secure vantage point, the phasmid thinking plunges into the object\u27s milieu, takes up its shapes and contours by a process of scrupulous mimesis, up to the point of indiscernibility. While proposing a diagonal journey through Georges Didi-Huberman\u27s texts, the article focuses particularly on Phasmes from 1998 as his – needless to say, always already thwarted – Discours de la méthode. Didi-Huberman\u27s insistence on the fact that the encounter with the object requires a permanent reinvention of the method leads to a profound reformulation of what critical thinking means. The article explores some parallels between Georges Didi-Huberman\u27s meditations on distance and critique, and Theodor W. Adorno\u27s understanding of "critical theory" as a necessary "snuggling up" to the object

Multimodal spatial accessibility to the primary and secondary education network: case study Bucharest-Ilfov Region

Education is, or at least should be, a daily activity for the entire youth population. Given the clear role of education in human capital construction, the study of spatial accessibility to educational facilities is an important research subject. The present paper examines the multimodal spatial accessibility to the primary and secondary school network in Bucharest-Ilfov region, one of the most demographically and residentially dynamic regions of the country. By using 1 km2 population grid data and geocoded locations of school units, a travel time isochrone analysis has been computed for three modes of transportation: walking, private car and public transport, by using GIS analysis. All travel times have been calculated for five threshold intervals: 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 minutes and linked to the distribution of the school-age population. Results show that the school network broadly follows the spatial pattern of the youth population and that most children can reach the closest school within 10 minutes by all three transport modes. However, pronounced intra-metropolitan inequalities exist. Bucharest displays a compact configuration, with the vast majority of pupils located within a 5- to 10-minute travel time. At the same time, Ilfov County shows a more dispersed pattern, with a considerable number of school units requiring over 20 minutes to reach, especially when relying on public transport or walking. These findings highlight how rapid suburbanisation and uneven transport provision generate spatial disparities in effective access to compulsory education units, and underline the need to integrate school location planning into transport and housing policies

Exploring the urban geography of online grocery shopping in Romania: trends and transformations

    No full text
The rapid rise of digital platforms is reshaping how urban residents access and consume food, marking a significant shift from traditional grocery shopping to online retail experiences. In Romania, this transformation is particularly evident in the Bucharest Region, where online grocery services are projected to generate over $599 million in revenue by the end of 2025. This study examines how digital grocery platforms mediate consumer experiences, shape food choices, and engage with sustainability in an increasingly platformized food landscape. Drawing on a content analysis of 380 user-generated social media reviews, our research uncovers two key themes. First, ‘shopping with an app’ presents delivery experiences, consumer trust, loyalty, and peer recommendations. Second, ‘monetary values and quality-of-benefits’ describe food preferences that are guided by external product cues such as price, brand, and packaging. This research contributes to the understanding of consumer behaviour in a digital marketplace, specifically how user-generated content and the app experience influence purchasing decisions and perceptions of value. Beyond these patterns, the study also examines how sustainability is integrated into the digital grocery experience, highlighting practices such as eco-friendly packaging and local sourcing. By tracing the shift from physical carts to digital clicks, this research offers insights into the evolving relationship between technology, consumption, and sustainability in urban Romania, contributing to broader debates on digital foodscapes and responsible consumption

Spatial classification of tourism routes in Isfahan Province, Iran

Tourism, as one of the most dynamic economic activities of recent years, plays a significant role in the economic development of human societies. One of the most essential bases of tourism development is the existence of natural and cultural-historical attractions, an efficient system of facilities services, and tourism facilities. Therefore, the current study has levelled tourism routes of Isfahan province in terms of having attractions and facilities to provide a better serving system for tourists according to the capacity of each tourism axis and its appropriate management to meet their needs. This study uses the descriptive-analytical method. The entropy weight method, cluster analysis (Ward method), and SWOT analysis were utilised. The study results indicated that theIsfahan-Semirom, Isfahan-Kashan, and Isfahan-Fereydunshahr tourism routes were the best in terms of tourism attractions and facilities. In fact, Isfahan province’s central, westnorth, and west tourist routes have more tourist attractions, and the need for facilities and services is felt in these routes. The final result of the SWOT analysis shows that it has more tourism strengths and opportunities than weaknesses and threats. Therefore, more services and facilities should be provided to develop tourism on this route. These findings suggest that the increase in services and facilities should occur more in the western and southern routes of the province

Looking Back On 27 Years with Professor Pollock

    No full text
I here recognize Professor Griselda Pollock\u27s great integrity of scholarship, both as a theorist of cultural studies and an art historian specializing in 19th century and modern art. This essay is a personal memoir looking back at the way in which she influenced not only my academic career but also my way of seeing the world. During the twenty-seven years I\u27ve known her, the theoretical boundaries of my academic concern with art history and art criticism have never shifted from hers in relation to class, race and sexuality. Looking back upon my eight years studying under her supervision in Leeds, I recall her pedagogy as premised on a student\u27s personal capability, rather than any predefined national, racial or sexual identity. She has been my role model as a scholar who actually tries to realise her theoretical conviction rather than merely speaking it. Among the immeasurable influence that she exerted on me, my interest in psychoanalysis and cultural studies I especially owe to her. This paper is thus composed of summaries of my publications influenced by her theoretical guidance
