ALEXANDRU COHAL, DORIN DOBRINCU, GEORGE ȚURCĂNAȘU (eds.). Regionalizarea: către un model de bună guvernanță a României [Regionalization: Towards a Good Governance Model for Romania]: Polirom. Iași. 2023. 302 p.
This edited volume stems from the public debate initiated by the Movement for the Development of Moldova (Mișcarea pentru dezvoltarea Moldovei) on how the development gap affecting the eastern part of Romania can be addressed via territorial reform.2 The contributors to the volume are professors and researchers at the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, and at the Romanian Academy in Iași. They are joined by three other colleagues working in Bolzano, Sibiu, and Cluj-Napoca. The contributors cover a broad range of fields: legal studies, geography, sociology, political science, economics, history, ethnology, and linguistics. This provides for a variety of perspectives on regionalism and the territorial and administrative reforms designed to address it. At the same time, as will be shown later, this also creates some issues regarding the coherence of the book.
(RE)THEORIZING THE MEASUREMENT OF CONSPIRACY THEORIES
This text critically examines whether psychometric scales represent a robust measurement choice when studying conspiracy theories: a key philosophical and methodological gap in the literature on conspiracy theories. I call into question whether such scales have content validity, predictive validity and whether studies employing these instruments manifest external validity, respectively. These issues manifest differently across the two types of scales examined. The adequate development of applied scales is unfeasible because it is impossible to objectively define an ideal combination of items that fully captures the conspiratorial themes they aim to measure. Applied scales will, then, always have limited content validity, which will not only impair our ability to understand whether they really measure the construct in question but will also prevent us from using them in a standardized way. While generic scales may seem superior to applied scales in that they allow for standardized measures, they seem to suffer from the same problem due to the theoretically limitless number of dimensions needed to fully capture conspiratorial ideation. Consequently, the degree to which the predictions made on the basis of these scales are valid (i.e. predictive validity) and their generalizability (i.e. external validity) becomes unclear. In this text, I argue that the employment of psychometric scales does not represent a robust method of measuring conspiracy theories. This situation raises concerns regarding the current state of the literature, since these instruments are widely used in this research area. Given the discussed shortcomings, I propose a novel approach to measurement, one that involves indirect assessment of conspiracy theories. Moreover, a better alternative to existing measures is considered, namely discourse analysis
Organising for thin places during the COVID-19 pandemic
This study aims to investigate some of the socio-spatial aspects of thickness and thinness in large Swedish organisations that arose from working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The questions that this study aimed to answer are \u27How do representatives who manage their staff by allowing or restricting WFH in public and private organisations describe how aspects of thickness, in terms of physical proximity and social relations, changed when their staff worked from home during the pandemic? How can organisational thickness and thinness be further developed to understand the detachment of workers from their working places in terms of consequences for the location and size of offices, leadership, control, and management?\u27. The study shows that organisations have been able to adjust and develop strategies for coping with long periods of absence from offices and that thin places can be created with the help of technology. Finally, the study shows that the pandemic may have future consequences regarding how work is organised, for instance, in terms of how large office spaces are needed and where these offices should be located
Conjoined Phrases as Adjoined B(oolean) P(hrases). The Case of Romanian
The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand it is meant to provide an overview of Kayne\u27s (1994) antisymmetry theory and of Munn\u27s (1993) Adjoined B(oolean) P(hrases) Theory in regard to conjoined phrases, as to verify the preferable way of approaching asymmetric coordination. The focus point of this section is presenting the advantages of taking conjoined phrases as adjoined BPs (the conjunction and second conjoin seen as part of a maximal projection) and checking if they hold true in the Romanian language. On the other hand, this section discusses the disadvantages brought up in the literature and possible solutions that have been proposed for each
Manner Salience and the Translation of Motion Events from English into Romanian
Although motion is a universal concept, languages vary with respect to the kinds of lexical items and syntactic patterns they use to express motion events. Talmy (1985, 2000) characterizes this variation in terms of lexicalization patterns, which distinguish between V(erb)-framed and S(atellite)-framed languages, depending on whether the path of motion is expressed by the verb or a satellite (preposition, particle or prefix). This article examines the expression of motion events in English and Romanian, as two languages representative of the S-framed vs. V-framed distinction; it focuses on the strategies Romanian translators employ to render directed motion structures, specifically, on the elaboration of the Path and Manner components in narratives. It is argued that, while this study does indicate a marked preference for translation strategies that mirror Talmy\u27s lexicalization patterns, it also reveals the existence of a rich and varied class of mannerdenoting adverbial expressions, as well as the availability of a number of minor additional syntactic patterns foregrounding Manner. It is suggested that this additional data support Slobin\u27s proposal that Talmy\u27s Path-based typological classification be refined by further ranking languages on a cline of manner salience (cf. Slobin 2004, 2006, 2014)

GWEN’S GENDER, RACE, AND AGENCY IN THE BBC TV SERIES MERLIN (2008-2012): FROM SERVANT TO QUEEN
This article discusses the character of Gwen from the TV series Merlin (2008-2012) created and broadcast by the BBC. Gwen starts her journey in the series as a black woman and a servant to lady Morgana, but eventually, she marries Arthur and she becomes the Queen of Camelot. In this text, we note the innovation of the creators of the series to portray the infamous character of Guinevere for the first time as a black woman and a servant in the palace as a way of introducing multicultural and multiracial characters in well-known adaptations. Subsequently, we explore Gwen’s race, gender, and agency as they evolved in the series in relation to her social position and relationships.
ON THE ACQUISITION OF MOTION IN ENGLISH
This paper discusses the acquisition of motion of native English speakers within Talmy’s (1985, 2000) typological classification of languages, the lexical elements involved in the expression of motion and the syntactic patterns emerging from their combination.Talmy introduces a two-class typology based on how a language encodes Path of motion; he distinguishes between Satellite-framed languages (Path conveyed by a satellite: a preposition, a particle, a prefix, a directional adverb), and Verb-framed languages (the verb itself encodes Path). In this typology, English is a Sattellite-framed language. A CHILDES corpus (Berman & Slobin (1994)) of narratives was analyzed. Participants had to describe images from a frog-story picture book. Five syntactic patterns used to express motion in English were systematically investigated in terms of frequency of occurence: bare directed motion, directed motion with a manner component, Path-Manner verbs (Drăgan (2012, 2022)), Goal of Motion constructions and located motion. Talmy claims that English speakers prefer Goal of Motion construction (manner-of-motion verb with a PP), however the preferred option seems to be the bare directed motion pattern. This paper provides a comprehensive view of language acquisition and development regarding the expression of motion, exploring the intricate relations between lexical items, syntactic structures and age-related changes
