Finnish National Election Studies 2003-2019: combined data
Taustatietoina vastaajista on kerätty sarjan aikana kaiken kaikkiaan noin 70 eri muuttujaa. This combined dataset contains the harmonised variables of datasets FSD1260, FSD2269, FSD2653, FSD3067, and FSD3467, which were collected after the Finnish parliamentary elections of 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019. The studies belong to the Finnish National Election Studies data series, and their survey data contain Finland's contribution to the international Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES). The harmonised variables, labelled "fnes", comprise responses from one or more collection rounds of the Finnish National Election Studies. Variables from different collection rounds were recoded and combined into the fnes variables at FSD to enable easier comparability between study waves. The data package includes a concordance table (bgF2556.csv) that details which variables in a collection round correspond to each fnes variable. The table also includes a topic and keyword description for the harmonised variables, comparability notes on the variables, as well as SPSS syntax commands and comments relating to the harmonisation of the data. The variables can also be browsed and compared via FSD's Loda portal (https://loda.fsd.tuni.fi/). Out of all the variables in the combined data, approximately 130 were included in all surveys of the series. Additionally, over 200 variables were included in more than one survey. The rest of the variables were specific to individual surveys. Recurring variables in the FNES data included, for example, interest in politics and elections as well as questions about voting and abstaining from voting. The variables also included respondents' political attitudes and views on democracy. A total of 70 different background variables were used over the course of the study series. Some background variables were included in all of the studies, some in fewer and some only in one study. Background variables that were included in all of the studies include gender, economic activity and occupational status, electoral district, level of education, household gross annual income, type of neighbourhood, number of children in the household, number of all persons living in the household, religious affiliation, year of birth, marital status, employment status, mother tongue and language spoken at home
Barometer for Swedish-speaking Finns 2008
Tutkimusta on rahoittanut Svenska Kulturfonden. This study charted the identity of Swedish-speaking Finns and their opinions on various aspects of everyday life, such as politics and society, the use of mass media, leisure time activities, values, and the sense of belonging. The study was funded by the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland (Svenska kulturfonden). The first questions revolved around language. The respondents' and their families' Finnish and Swedish language skills were surveyed. It was examined whether the respondents had used Swedish, Finnish or both in different types of contexts, e.g. at home, at school, with friends, at bureaus and banks, and at work. The next questions concerned media, the press, radio, and television. The respondents were asked if they had a digital TV receiver in their household, and their preferred newspapers, radio stations and television channels were surveyed, as well as their internet and e-mail use. The survey also investigated the respondents' trust in different organisations such as the government, the church, social services, the universities, the police, and daycare services. The respondents' interest in local government and municipal politics was examined, and they were presented with statements concerning the upcoming 2008 municipal elections and asked whether they were involved in an election campaign either as a candidate or in some other way. It was also queried which party they usually voted for, if they would vote for the same party in this election, and whether they read blogs written by local councillors and municipal election candidates. The respondents were asked how local councillors should conduct municipal politics and if they felt that citizens are able to participate in decision-making. Some questions covered municipal mergers generally and in the respondents' own municipality. The next questions were formulated by the "Förvaltningslösningar språkliga konsekvenser" project (SpråKon). Questions covered the respondents' satisfaction in some aspects of their municipality of residence, including the availability of geriatric and healthcare services, schools and education, employment opportunities, public transport, culture and sports services, citizen participation possibilities, equal rights of men and women, safety, and opportunities for entrepreneurship. Finally, the respondents were asked whether they felt that people living in the municipality and neighbourhood -- Finnish-speaking, Swedish-speaking or in general -- share the same values, and which decision-making bodies have done the most to advance employment and entrepreneurship in the municipality. Background variables included, for instance, region of residence, age group, gender, education level, economic activity and occupational status, marital status, and household composition
Writing Competition on the Future of Work in Finland 2016-2017
Aineisto koostuu lyhyistä kirjoituksista liittyen suomalaisen työn tulevaisuuteen. Aineisto on kerätty kirjoituskilpailun avulla, jossa kirjoittajia pyydettiin keksittyjen henkilötarinoiden avulla pohtimaan millaista on työn tulevaisuus. The data contain short texts concerning the future of work in Finland. The data were collected in connection with a writing contest whose participants were asked to think about the future of Finnish work with the help of imaginary personas. The invitation to participate included a list of personas that the participants could choose from, and they could also invent their own. The participants were asked to write a short text regarding the life of the persona in the year 2036. The listed alternatives for the personas included e.g. a freelancer in the field of culture, a downshifter, an online platform worker, a craftsperson, a civil servant promoting 'experimentation culture', a factory owner, a healthcare service professional, and a marginalised person. The data collectors wished for depictions of work tasks and practices, work communities and collaboration, competencies, and how the personas organise their livelihood. The data were collected as part of the "Dialogue, Work and the Future" project funded by the Prime Minister's Office. The dataset is only available in Finnish

The respondents were first asked how they had financed their doctoral studies and what their reasons had been for taking up a doctoral degree. Relating to employment situation and quality of work, questions charted what the respondents' occupational status was, how well their work corresponded to their qualifications, and what reasons had potentially hindered their employment. The respondents who were in paid work were asked their employer type, tasks at work, gross monthly income, satisfaction with work, and ability to make use of skills learned in doctoral studies in their job. With regard to the significance of a doctoral degree in occupational life, opinions were charted on whether the topic of doctoral dissertation had been useful in employment, whether having a doctoral degree had led to an increased salary and better standing in occupational life, and whether doctoral education was useful when it came to employment and skills needed in occupational life. Relating to developing and improving doctoral education, views were probed on the guidance received during studies, satisfaction with the studies, and things that should be emphasised in the education (e.g. teaching skills, entrepreneurship). Background variables included the respondent's gender, university, field of study, time of starting studies, and age at the time of graduation (categorised)

Vocational Teachers' Views on Competence-Based Education 2017
Kysely on tehty osana pro gradu -tutkielmaa ja toteutettu osana TAMK:n (Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulun) ammatillisen opettajakoulutuksen järjestämää Tutkesta toimintaan -koulutusprojektia. Tutkimuksella kartoitettiin, miten toisen asteen ammatilliset opettajat kokevat osaamisperusteiseen ajatteluun siirtymisen vaikuttaneen koulutuksen toteuttamiseen. Seuraavaksi vastaajia pyydettiin arvioimaan erilaisia väittämiä osaamisperusteisesta arvioinnista, esimerkiksi 'Osaamisperusteinen arviointi on yksinkertaista'. Vastaajia pyydettiin lisäksi arvioimaan omin sanoin, miten osaamisperusteisuuteen siirtyminen on vaikuttanut arkisiin työtehtäviin. This survey was conducted as part of a Master's Thesis and in relation with the Finnish educational project "TUTKEsta toimintaan" at Tampere University of Applies Sciences. The study charted upper secondary level vocational teachers' views on what sort of an impact competence-based methods have had on vocational education in Finland. "Competence-based" ('osaamisperusteisuus' in Finnish, translation by the Finnish National Agency for Education) is used here to describe a way of implementing studies where, instead of abstract knowledge, working life competencies and the flexibility and personality of one's studies is emphasised. The survey first contained questions about competence-based education generally, e.g. with regard to how the concept is perceived, how well it had been implemented at the respondent's home institution, and if the respondent felt more pressure in their work due to e.g. rush, new systems, new legislation, expectations, and increases in workload or the number of students. Next, the respondents were presented with a set of attitudinal statements regarding the impact of personalisation and flexibility of studies. The teachers were also asked how personalisation of studies was visible in their everyday work, and whether personalisation and flexibility of studies offered advantages in studies and working life or if they created new challenges. Next, attitudinal statements were presented on the tasks and appreciation of the teacher as well as working life cooperation. In addition, the respondents were asked if the teacher's role had changed in a variety of ways after the implementation of competence-based vocational education. The respondents were then asked to evaluate the extent they agreed or disagreed with statements regarding competence-based evaluation, e.g. "Competence-based evaluation is simple" and "Competence tests meet employers' expectations of working life competencies". They were also asked if the new competence-based evaluation methods gave a more truthful image of students' competencies than the previous teaching system, and what were the possible pros or cons of the old system. Finally, the respondents were asked to describe how the competence-based system had affected their everyday work tasks and Finnish upper secondary vocational education in general. Background variables included gender, age group, institution, and work experience in years
Employment Survey of Tampere University Doctoral Graduates 2010-2011
The Employment Survey of Tampere University Doctoral Graduates 2010-2011, collected in 2013, charted the employment situation of University of Tampere doctoral graduates who had received their degree in 2010-2011. This included questions on the respondent's current job description and salary. The respondents were also asked whether the doctoral degree was a requirement for their current job, how well the job corresponded with their education, and whether their doctoral thesis was related to their current job. In the last part of the survey, the respondents were asked to evaluate the guidance they had received during their postgraduate education and their satisfaction with the postgraduate education in the University of Tampere. The respondents were also asked to evaluate how they thought postgraduate education should be developed. Background variables included gender, field of study, and degree level
Gambling Harm Survey 2016
Statistics Finland conducted the Gambling Harm Survey in early 2017 as a mixed-mode internet/mail survey. The study was commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). The study aimed to chart Finnish gambling habits, social and healthcare-related problems caused by gambling, and opinions on the visibility of advertising and marketing by Finnish gambling organisations. In 2016, three gambling operators had exclusive rights to provide gambling services in Finland: Finland's Slot Machine Association RAY (government-owned), Veikkaus (government-owned) and Fintoto. These three were merged into a single government-owned organisation in 2017. First, the respondents were asked what the reasoning was for a government-owned and government-regulated gambling market (e.g. securing gambling profits for the state; supporting Finnish art, science, sports, and social services; reducing the harm caused by gambling; preventing foreign competition). Their opinions on marketing and advertising by these organisations were examined with questions regarding, for example, how often the respondents had seen gambling advertisements on billboards, television, the internet etc. Gambling habits were examined with questions regarding the frequency of playing games of chance, such as lotteries or horse betting, and reasons for playing them. The study also surveyed if the respondents found gambling a problem, how often they had felt in 2016 that it was a problem, and if they were familiar with or had used different services provided by RAY, Veikkaus and Fintoto for helping control gambling. The amount of money the respondents had used for gambling in 2016 per week, per month and during the whole year was also surveyed, as well as in what sort of environments they played these games (e.g. at home, at work, in kiosks, at Casino Helsinki) and with whom (alone, with an acquaintance / a group of acquaintances, or with an unknown person / a group of unknown persons). It was also surveyed if the respondents gambled on the internet and whether they used a PC or a mobile device, such as a smartphone or a tablet computer, for online gambling. Next, the Problem and Pathological Gambling Measure (PPGM) was used to evaluate the respondents' gambling habits. They were also asked about harm caused by gambling on their lives in general as well as relating to their economical situation, work or studies, health, emotional well-being and relationships. Other possible types of harm on the respondents' lives were also surveyed. Finally, the respondents were asked if their social circle in 2016 included persons who, in their opinion, gambled too much. It was queried who these persons were in relation to the respondents and what sort of problems these persons' gambling had caused for the respondent. Background variables included gender, education level, net income (categorised), economic activity and occupational status, age group and NUTS3 region
