Finnish Views on Democracy and Political Issues 2017: Swedish-Speaking Finns
The study charted Swedish-speaking Finns' views on democracy, society and safety in Finland. The public opinion survey was part of the "Fate of Democracy" project led by think tank Magma. The study contained attitudinal statements that the respondents were asked to evaluate on a scale ranging from "Strongly agree" to "Strongly disagree". The themes of the survey included safety, Finland's EU membership, multiculturalism and minorities, and trust in democracy and traditional media. First, the respondents' opinions regarding elections and the functionality of democracy were charted with questions pertaining to issues such as whether voters in parliamentary elections can truly impact politics, and if Finnish matters would be tended to better if decision-making was left to independent experts instead of politicians and citizens. It was also asked if the ability to make citizens' initiatives had improved democracy in Finland. Some questions pertained to cyber threats, terrorism and Russia, as well as the extent of the respondents' trust in "traditional" media rather than social media, for instance. The study also canvassed attitudes with regard to foreign and security policy, e.g. with questions concerning Nordic cooperation, NATO and the European Union. The final questions covered matters related to multiculturalism, corruption, language policy, and safety, and the respondents' attitudes toward immigrants and asylum seekers were examined. Background variables included gender, age (categorised), education level and type of municipality of residence
Helsinki Deaconess Institute Housing Services 2013
Aineistosta on tehty html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla haastatteluja on helppo selata. This dataset consists of group and individual interviews of 10 housing service employees of the Helsinki Deaconess Institute and 6 residents of the institute's housing units. The interviewees were asked to comment on nine statements regarding everyday life in the housing units, community development training, and the "Housing First" approach. All interviewees and the interviewer participated, prior to the interviews, in CABLE community development training organised by the Helsinki Deaconess Institute. The interviewees commented on e.g. the roles of residents and employees, communality, and the impact of community development training, as well as whether substance use caused problems in the housing units and if successful housing depended on the residents themselves. The data contain both individual and group interviews. Background information included date of the interview, interview type (individual/group), gender and role. The data were organised into an easy to use html version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish
Secondary Use of Health and Social Care Data 2016
Taustamuuttujina olivat mm. äidinkieli, siviilisääty, elämänvaihe, asuinmuoto, yhteiskuntaluokka, poliittinen suuntautuminen, tulot ja ammattiryhmä.This survey charted Finnish citizens' as well as social and healthcare service professionals' attitudes and views concerning secondary use of health and social care data in research and development of services. The study contained two target groups: (1) persons who suffered or had a close relative or acquaintance who suffered from one or more chronic conditions, diseases or disorders, and (2) social and healthcare service professionals. First, the respondents' opinions on the reliability of a variety of authorities and organisations were examined (e.g. the police, Kela, register and statistics authorities, universities) as well as trust in appropriate handling of personal data. They were also asked which type of information they deemed personal or not (e.g. bank account number and balance, purchase history at a grocery store, web browsing history, patient records, genetic information, social security number, phone number). They were asked to evaluate which principles they considered important in handling personal health data (e.g. being able to access one's personal data and to have inaccurate data rectified, and being able to restrict data processing), and the study also surveyed how interested the respondents were in keeping track of the use of their health data, and how willing they would be to permit the use of anonymous health data and genetic information for a variety of purposes (e.g. medicine and treatment development, development of equipment and services, and operations of insurance companies). Next, it was examined whether the respondents kept track of their physical activity with a smartphone or a fitness tracker, for instance, and if they would be willing to permit the use of anonymous data concerning physical activity for a variety of purposes. In addition, the respondents' attitudes were charted with regard to developing medicine research by combining anonymous health data and patient records with other data on, for instance, physical activity, alcohol use, grocery store purchase history, web browsing history, and social media use. The study also examined the willingness to permit access to personal health data for social and healthcare service professionals in a service situation, as well as for social and healthcare authorities and other authorities outside of a service situation. Finally, it was charted how important the respondents deemed different factors relating to data collection (e.g. being able to decide for which purposes personal data, or even anonymous data, can be used, and increasing awareness on how health data can be utilised in scientific research). The reliability of a variety of authorities and organisations, such as social welfare/healthcare organisations, academic researchers and pharmaceutical companies, was also examined in terms of data security and purposes for using data. Background variables included, among others, mother tongue, marital status, household composition, housing tenure, socioeconomic class, political party preference, left-right political self-placement, gross income, economic activity and occupational status, and respondent group (citizen/healthcare service professional/social service professional)
Power Structures of Finnish Society 2011
Valtarakenneaineistossa on tutkittu suomalaisen yhteiskunnan valtaeliittiä. Tutkimuksen vastaajat olivat seuraavilta yhteiskunnan eri sektoreilta: politiikka, hallinto, elinkeinoelämä, järjestöt, joukkotiedotus, tiede ja kulttuuri. Tutkimus kohdistuu sektoreiden johtaviin institutionaalisiin asemiin, rooleihin, eikä niissä toimiviin henkilöihin sinänsä. Vuonna 2011 eliittiasemia oli noin 1400. Tutkimuksen teemoja olivat muun muassa ura, kansainvälistyminen, vuorovaikutus, vaikuttaminen sekä lapsuuden ja nuoruuden koti. Uraan liittyen kysyttiin, millä alueella vastaajan nykyinen päätoimi on ja onko heillä mahdollisia muita toimia jollakin muulla alueella. Lisäksi kartoitettiin luottamustehtäviä, jäsenyyttä eri järjestöissä ja epävirallisissa ryhmissä sekä urakehitykseen myönteisesti vaikuttaneita tekijöitä. Vuorovaikutusta mitattiin esittämällä haastatelluille lista yhteydenpitotahoista ja pyytämällä haastateltuja arvioimaan yhteydenpidon tiheys ja kertomaan yhteydenpidon luonne. Yhteydenpitotahoja olivat mm. tasavallan presidentti, puolue, ministeriöt, kunta, puolustusvoimat, kirkko, eri järjestöt, korkeakoulut ja yritykset. Lisäksi pyydettiin kertomaan, miten usein vastaaja esiintyy joukkotiedotusvälineissä ja missä määrin hän on työnsä vuoksi yhteydessä nuoruusvuosien tuttuihin. Kansainvälistymistä kartoitettiin kysymällä oliko vastaaja opiskellut tai työskennellyt ulkomailla ja oliko hänellä henkilökohtaisia kontakteja ulkomaisiin tahoihin. Vaikuttamiseen liittyen kysyttiin, mitä yhteydenpidon muotoja vastaaja pitää tärkeimpinä oman organisaationsa kannalta. Vastaajia pyydettiin arvioimaan eri tahojen (eduskunta, kulttuurielämän edustajat, lehdistö, palkansaajajärjestöt, EU yms.) vaikutusvaltaa ja kuinka tärkeinä he pitivät erilaisia periaatteita omaa toimialaansa koskevassa poliittisessa päätöksenteossa. In this power structure survey, the Finnish power elite is under observation. The respondents represented the following sectors of society: politics, administration, business life, organisations, mass media, science and culture. The study focused on institutional leadership positions and roles in the various sectors, not on the persons as such. There were approximately 1,400 elite positions in Finland in 2011. The themes of the survey included, among others, career, internationalisation, interaction, power and influence, and childhood home. In view of the respondents' careers, they were queried the field of their main occupation as well as possible posts or offices in other fields. The study also charted the respondents' positions of trust in e.g. the Parliament, the State's committees, boards of corporations, and different types of organisations. The respondents were asked to choose the most important factors that had had a positive impact on their career development (e.g. work experience, diligence, suitable political views and party preference, education, family relations, public presentation skills) as well as to evaluate what sort of effect their childhood home had had on their career choice and whether gender had affected their career development. Interaction was examined by presenting the respondents with a list of possible contact partners and asking them about the frequency and nature of the contacts. The listed contact partners included e.g. the President, the Prime Minister's office, political parties, ministries, courts and the police, universities, the Church, municipalities, and the Defence Forces. The respondents were also asked to estimate how often they appeared in a variety of mass media outlets and to what extent they kept in touch with old acquaintances they had met, for instance, during studies or their military service. Next, the respondents were asked whether they had common interests with decision-makers from a variety of fields. Internationalisation was charted by enquiring whether the respondents had studied or worked abroad and whether they had personal contacts with different types of foreign actors. With regard to power and influence, the modes of contact that the respondents deemed the most important for their organisation were charted (e.g. unofficial personal meetings, telephone calls, personal letters, e-mails, organisations' official letters, mass media). Next, the respondents were asked to assess the influence and power of various bodies (e.g. the Parliament, representatives of cultural life, the media, labour market organisations, the EU). The study also surveyed their opinions on the importance of a variety of principles in decision-making regarding their own field (e.g. preparation of decisions is public, the social impact of decisions is taken into consideration, representatives of enterprises participate in decision-making, citizens can influence decisions). In addition, the respondents' views on the intensity of antagonism between various groups in Finland were examined (e.g. the wealthy/the impoverished, politicians/citizens, employers/employees). The respondents were also presented with a set of statements regarding social issues such as the functionality of democracy in Finland, immigration, income disparity, privatisation of public services, and NATO membership. Finally, the respondents' family backgrounds were charted with regard to language spoken in childhood home as well as parents' educational background, their economic activity and occupational status, their possible positions of trust in different organs and institutions, and the respondents' assessment of their parents' political party preference in the respondents' youth. Background variables included e.g. gender, year of birth (categorised), province of residence, education, self-perceived social class, gross income, and the political party the respondent would vote for if the parliamentary elections were held at the time of the survey
Student Feedback Survey for Bachelor Graduates 2016
The Student Feedback Survey, collected every academic year, charts student experiences of studying at a university. The national survey is sent to all students who have completed their Bachelor's degree or studied for three years in a field where Bachelor's degrees are not awarded. Themes of the survey include, among others, progress with studies, financing of studies, well-being, and balance between studies and other aspects of life. With regard to financing of studies, the respondents were asked about paid work done during studies and their means of financing studies (e.g. student grant, student loan, wages) as well as their financial circumstances at the time of the survey. Extra-curricular activities and participation in the activities of a student association were surveyed. Experiences of studies were examined with statements relating to the quality of education and teaching and support received in studies. Satisfaction with studies, life in general, family life, and friends was charted as well as own performance in studies. The respondents were presented with several statements about, for instance, the guidance provided by their university, group work, course requirements, study progress, ability to study, professional goals, health and well-being, social life, and personality traits. The universities were also able to add university-specific questions to the survey, which charted primarily the same themes as the main survey and additional background information. Background variables included the respondent's university, field of study, age, and gender. Some of the background variables are specific to individual universities (e.g. the respondent's degree programme, major subject or faculty)

Diaconia Barometer 2016
Diakoniabarometrit kartoittavat diakoniatyöntekijöiden käsityksiä ja kokemuksia työstään. Diakoniabarometri 2016 keskittyi erityisesti syksyn 2015 maahanmuuttaja-aaltoon. Diaconia Barometers chart Finnish diaconal workers' experiences of their work. The 2016 survey concentrated especially on the 2015 European refugee crisis and the influx of people seeking asylum in Finland. Themes included social disadvantage and the possibilities of communality as a channel for helping. First, the respondents were asked how often they had encountered different types of abused or disadvantaged clients in their work (e.g. a victim of emotional abuse, someone who constantly has to resort to food aid, someone unable to apply for social security benefits, an illegal immigrant, a homeless person). They were also asked how often in 2015 they had performed a variety of tasks (e.g. organised voluntary activities, organised spaces for clients' own activities, helped the socially disadvantaged in becoming a meaningful part of the congregation). The barometer also surveyed the share of time the respondents used weekly on certain types of diaconal work, such as communal work in a church or client work in the diaconia office. It was queried whether a holding centre or other means of lodging was arranged in the parish area for asylum seekers in 2015, and if the respondents had helped asylum seekers either voluntarily or as part of their work. The respondents were presented with a set of attitudinal statements regarding asylum seekers as well as relations between asylum seekers, locals, and diaconal/volunteer workers. In addition, an open-ended question queried opinions on what sort of measures should be taken to ensure peaceful coexistence between Finns and asylum seekers. The diaconia barometer also examined the respondents' working conditions. They were enquired about the support received from superiors as well as the most important competences of a diaconal worker in the following ten years. Further questions, repeated from the 2013 Diaconia Barometer, charted harassment or bullying in the workplace. Threatening situations or physical violence caused by clients or members of the congregation were also charted. Finally, the type of values apparent in the respondents' work and work community were examined with attitudinal statements (e.g. "I feel like my team has a common meaning" and "My work relates to things I find important in life"). Background variables included number of inhabitants at the municipality of the respondent's workplace, the respondent's age group, educational background, gender, work experience in the field, and diocese
Citizen Deliberation on the Swedish Language and Swedish-speaking Minority in Finland: Post-deliberation Survey 2014
Tutkimus kartoitti suomalaisten mielipiteitä ruotsin kielen asemasta Suomessa. The study, which included three separate surveys as well as group deliberation sessions, charted Finnish opinions on the role of the Swedish language in Finland. This survey was conducted right after the deliberation sessions. The aim of the research project was to study the impact of deliberation and use of deliberative rules on the participants' attitudes concerning Swedish language and Swedish speaking minority in Finland. The respondents were presented some of the same statements as before the deliberation. The statements charted views on, among others, the role and significance of Swedish in the Finnish society, compulsory Swedish in basic education, advantages of a bilingual society, and Swedish-speaking people in Finland. The respondents were also asked whether they thought the Swedish People's Party in Finland (RKP) had too much power relative to its size and whether they had Swedish-speaking relatives, friends or co-workers. This phase of the study also included questions about political views, such as interest in politics, importance of different areas of politics, frequency of discussing political and social issues with other people, and civic engagement. The respondents perceptions of their personal characteristics were charted as well as trust in different institutions and other people. Finally, the respondents were asked how well they were able to speak Swedish and presented a number of questions investigating factual knowledge of the role of Swedish in Finland. Background variables included the respondent's gender, year of birth, education, occupational group, and region of residence
Finnish Experiences of Indoor Air Quality Problems 2014
Kirjoittajat kertovat aluksi usein ajankohdasta, elämäntilanteesta ja paikasta, jossa he törmäsivät ensimmäistä kertaa sisäilmaongelmiin. The forty texts in the data deal with the participants' personal experiences of indoor air quality problems in Finland and the impact of poor indoor air quality on the lives of the participants and people close to them. The data were collected in 2014 by researcher Eerika Finell in collaboration with the Finnish Literature Society (SKS). The majority of texts begin with memories of the time when the participants first encountered indoor air quality problems as well as the place where it happened. The participants discuss their experiences and the impact of poor indoor air quality on their health and describe symptoms, such as respiratory tract diseases, caused by mold or other pollutants in buildings. The texts also describe support and treatment received for problems caused by poor indoor air quality. The participants also discuss deficiencies in social and structural attitudes towards indoor air quality concerns. The structure of the texts was not controlled, and some texts also contain pictures and drawings. Background information includes the participant's occupation, year of birth, region of residence (NUTS3) and gender. The participants could decide for themselves which background information to share. The dataset is only available in Finnish
University Student Health Survey 2016
This national survey examined the health and health-related behaviour of university and university of applied sciences (polytechnic) students in Finland. Questions covered, among other topics, physical, mental and dental health, health-related behaviour, social interaction, and eating habits. General state of health was charted with a number of questions relating to long-term illnesses, disabilities or disorders, and current well-being in general. The respondents were asked if they had suffered from a variety of symptoms in the previous month. Birth control methods used by the respondent and her/his partner within the previous month were surveyed. Some questions covered the respondents' weight, height, and attitude toward food. Psychological or social symptoms causing problems were investigated. Psychosocial health was further studied using items of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). Use of healthcare services by different types of service providers and satisfaction with the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) were surveyed, along with reasons for using the services of other healthcare service providers. The respondents were also asked if they had used smartphone applications related to health and well-being, and what type of guidance they would have liked in certain issues (e.g. stress or weight management, study skills, alcohol use, smoking cessation). Time spent sitting during the day as well as engagement in sporting activities and less vigorous physical activities were surveyed. Eating habits were investigated with a number of questions based on the Index of Diet Quality (IDQ), for instance, asking where the respondents ate their main meals, if they skipped meals, and the consumption of dairy products, fish, bread, fruit, vegetables, etc. The respondents were also asked how often they brushed or flossed their teeth and used toothpaste or xylitol products, and whether they had problems with teeth grinding (or used a bite guard), facial pain or jaw locking. Health-related behaviour was further studied by asking the respondents about their use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco products (amount, frequency). Drinking habits were further charted using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Some questions covered gambling and possible problems caused by it. One theme pertained to the respondents' studies. The survey examined the number of years the respondents had been enrolled as 'present' for current studies, credits earned, study success, and confidence of having chosen the right field of study, as well as hours spent on study and hours spent on paid work during the study year. The sufficiency of study guidance and advice provided by the institution were investigated as well as positive and negative feelings (e.g. enthusiasm, burnout) related to their studies. Internet use was examined with questions regarding the purposes for which respondents used the internet and how many hours per week, and if it had caused problems with their circadian rhythm, studying or relationships. The respondents' participation in paid work during the academic year was also surveyed, and they were asked to evaluate their financial situation. The survey also studied interpersonal relationships. The respondents were asked about their household composition and living arrangements, partnerships, sexual orientation, spending time with friends, whether they felt lonely or part of a group, and whether they had someone close to them with whom they could discuss their affairs. Some questions charted whether the respondents had been subjected to bullying or discrimination during their higher education studies or had themselves bullied or discriminated against others. The respondents were also asked whether they had been subjected to stalking or violence, and by whom. The final theme pertained to family life, and questions covered the number of children, whether the respondents would want to have (more) children, reasons for having or not having children, and support for combining studies and family life (from the university, from other people, or from society). Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, field of study, and university/university of applied sciences
