Sociobarometer 2019
The sociobarometer is a wide-ranging survey charting expert opinion on the welfare of Finnish citizens and the present state of welfare services in Finland. The 2019 sociobarometer charted social disparity, basic security and minimum income, support for partially incapacitated persons, rehabilitation, and measures for increasing employment. Additionally, questions examined developing social welfare and healthcare services. Respondents included healthcare managers and social workers at municipalities and joint municipal authorities, directors of operational units at Kela (Social Insurance Institution of Finland), a sample of Kela officers working with social assistance benefits, and managers of local employment and economic development offices (TE Offices). The 2019 sociobarometer survey was collected with funding from the Funding Centre for Social Welfare and Health Organisations (STEA) of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health as well as Kela and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. First, the survey focused on the health and social services reform (sote-uudistus). Questions examined the respondents' views on the successfulness of the reform as a whole and in different areas. It was also enquired how the reform would affect the status of different types of healthcare service providers as well as whether the respondents thought the reform would succeed in e.g. reducing costs of social welfare and healthcare services, increasing the client's ability to choose their social welfare and healthcare service provider, streamlining administration and funding, and improving well-being and health in municipalities and healthcare regions. The respondents were also asked whether they approved or disapproved with different measures to reduce costs in social welfare and healthcare, and whether increasing the clients' freedom to choose their healthcare service provider would improve or weaken e.g. service quality, availability or costs. Next, views were charted on the development of well-being, social disparity and basic security. The respondents were asked whether well-being of different groups of people in the area had increased or decreased within the previous five years. They were also asked to choose the groups of people whose situation worried them most, as well as how functional they considered the social welfare and health service system for people with several problems in their life situation. They were also asked to estimate the effect of recent cuts to basic security on the subsistence and service needs of people in the area. Attitudinal statements were presented on developing the system of basic security. The respondents were also asked which factors they considered to have an impact on the increase of disparity in the area in the coming years, and which measures should be included in the Government's platform in order to decrease disparity. The respondents were also presented with attitudinal statements concerning minimum income and basic social assistance. The survey also examined views on employment and supporting economic growth. The respondents were asked to estimate how big of a problem unemployment was in their area and to what extent different political measures would increase employment. Opinions were also charted on different incentives to work. Factors affecting employment opportunities of the partially incapacitated were charted along with possible measures for improving their employment. Views were examined on the importance of different aspects in the organisation of services in the reformation of healthcare regions. Finally, the respondent's opinions were charted on rehabilitation and different aspects affecting the quality of rehabilitation services. Background variables included, depending on the type of respondent, educational background, job title, years spent in current work tasks, major region and Kela insurance district
Perceptions of Vocational Education: Adult Students in Vocational Education 2018
Aikuisopiskelijoilta kysyttiin, kuinka kiinnostavina he pitivät itselleen erilaisia ammatillisia koulutusvaihtoehtoja, mitä alaa he opiskelevat ja kuinka tyytyväisiä he ovat opiskelupaikkaansa. The survey charted the perceptions and opinions of adult students in vocational upper secondary education regarding vocational education and training in Finland. Main themes included, among others, reasons behind the respondents' choice of vocational education or training, perceptions of how general and vocational upper secondary education are appreciated, and opinions on studying. The study was commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Culture and Skills Finland. Data collection was conducted by IROResearch. First, opinions on studying were examined with various statements concerning, for example, whether the respondents thought that studying was interesting, working was more interesting than studying, and their employer was interested in how they succeeded in their studies. Factors affecting the respondents' choice of vocational education or training (e.g. wanting to have a job with good pay, needing additional education in order to stay in the workforce, location of the school/education facility, uncertain financial circumstances) were also surveyed. The respondents were asked how interesting different educational paths had been for them personally when they applied to vocational education or training (e.g. preparatory education for upper secondary vocational education and training (VALMA), competence-based qualification). The respondents' primary field of education (e.g. humanities and arts, natural sciences, information and communication technologies) was surveyed. Finally, the perceived usefulness of the respondents' studies in their future as well as their satisfaction in their education were examined with some attitudinal statements (e.g. whether they thought their upper secondary education would be useful in their future work and whether they would choose a different path of education if they could reapply). Background variables included the language used to conduct the interview, the respondent's gender, age, region of residence (NUTS3), municipality of residence, highest level of education, occupation group, whether they had ever been unemployed and whether they had received any special support in their studies during the past two years
Professional Identity and Religious Beliefs of Children's Instructor Students 2016
The survey charted the professional motivation, identity and religiosity of Children's Instructor students in Christian Institutes of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Finland. This dataset is based on the second collection wave in a cohort study that followed students studying for an upper secondary qualification in Child Care, Education and Family Welfare as they progressed in their studies. The participating students started their studies in 2014. FSD collections also include the first (FSD3252) and third (FSD3263) waves of this study. The study was part of the project "Student's Development into Church Professionals" (Kasvu kirkon työntekijäksi), funded by Kirkon koulutuskeskus (adult education school of the Evangelical Lutheran Church) and Church Research Institute. First, the respondents were asked about their reasons for applying to Children's Instructor training (e.g. wanting to help others or work with children and interest in religious questions) and to what extent they agreed or disagreed with statements concerning working for a parish (e.g. the reliability of a parish as an employer and trust in the future of educational work in a parish). Next, participation in voluntary work was charted with questions relating to the types of volunteering the participants had done, e.g. helping relatives and acquaintances, fundraising and donating to charities. The survey also charted the respondents' happiness and attitudes towards life and future (e.g. whether they thought that they could get through hard times in life and whether they were worried about the future). The respondents' religiosity was investigated with questions about religious affiliation, religious identity (e.g. whether they identified themselves as spiritual persons and/or conservative in their religion) and how they believed in God (e.g. according to church doctrine or not at all). The presence of religion and religiosity in the respondents' lives was charted with questions concerning the frequency of e.g. praying, meditation and reading the Bible, the situations where they prayed (e.g. in the mornings and before a significant event) and their feelings about their faith (e.g. whether comforting or contradictory in their life). Finally, the respondents were asked to evaluate their abilities in aspects relating to their studies and work, such as guiding children and volunteers, cooperating with parents, or religious education. Background variables included the respondent's educational institution and whether the respondent aimed for curriculum-based or competence-based qualification
Youth Council Members' Views on Climate Change 2019
Kehyskertomusten avulla vastaajilta toivottiin kirjoituksia siitä, millaisen he uskovat maailman olevan vuonna 2030. The data consist of self-administered writings of youth council members on climate change and their image of the world in 2030. In the invitation to write, the youth council members were asked to choose between two different frame narratives and to write a story based on the narrative they chose. The frame narratives guided the youth council members to write about what they thought the world would be like in the year 2030. The first narrative describes a world where environmental threats have been identified and reacted to. The second narrative describes a world where environmental threats have not evoked larger interest and actions to combat climate change have been minimal. Background information included the respondent's age, gender, region of residence (NUTS3) and whether they were at present a youth council member. The dataset is only available in Finnish
Subsistence of University Students in the Capital Region 2018
The study charted the subsistence, employment and housing of university students in the capital region in Finland. The study was funded by the Student Union of the University of Helsinki and the Student Union of Aalto University. First, the respondents were asked questions relating to student grant. The questions focused on, for example, whether the respondents had received student grant for the degree they were studying for and if not, why (e.g. because of too large income or too few study credits), as well as whether the months of student financial aid available for them had been or would be sufficient for their bachelor's and master's degrees. The respondents were also asked whether they felt it was easy or hard for them to sufficiently progress in their studies (approximately 5 study credits per month) to qualify for student financial aid as well as how they were planning to fund their studies if they could not receive student financial aid any longer (e.g. by working, with savings, with the help of their family or spouse). Next, questions relating to student loan were presented. The respondents were asked whether they had taken out student loan and why (e.g. to secure income, to improve standard of living, for investing). They were also asked whether changes such as student financial aid cuts, reduction in the maximum number of months student financial aid was available and the transfer to general housing allowance for accommodation costs had had an impact on their need to take study loan. Employment and other sources of income were examined with questions concerning the amount of time the respondents worked at present or had worked during the past school year. If the respondents had not worked, they were asked whether they would have wanted to. The respondents were asked about the most important reason for working during their studies (e.g. for work experience or networking) and how they thought working would affect the progress of their studies. Some questions focused on income by charting, for example, how much how much salary the respondents thought they would receive a year after graduation and how much their monthly income from different sources was (e.g. salary, social assistance, aid from parents). The respondents were also asked about their savings and easily disposable property (e.g. shares/stock), whether they thought their financial circumstances were good or bad and whether and how much they received financial aid from their parents or other relatives. Ways of dealing with insufficient income were examined with questions relating to, for example, whether the respondents had taken out instant loans, done undeclared work or gone without eating for a day. Next, the respondents were asked how the transfer of students to be covered under general housing allowance rather than student housing supplement had affected their subsistence and housing. Housing was examined with questions relating to, for example, accommodation type during the autumn semester, household composition and the allocation of expenses between the adults living in the household, as well as satisfaction in various aspects of the housing (e.g. rent, location, condition). The expenses related to housing were also charted and the respondents were asked how much general housing allowance they received per month. The respondents were presented with statements concerning housing and the changes in general housing allowance (e.g. whether one or two bedroom student housing had become a more interesting option and whether they thought that shared housing was no longer as cost-effective). Finally, statements concerning, for example, wellbeing, satisfaction in the physical environment of the university, and the amount of guidance received for studies were presented. Background variables included, among others, the respondent's age group, gender, parents' highest level of education, highest previous degree, faculty (University of Helsinki) or school (Aalto University), the amount of credits completed during the past school year and whether the respondent had some condition, illness or injury that hindered their studies
Multiple Rights to Study of Higher Education Students 2019
The survey charted the reasons and factors behind higher education students having multiple rights to study in tertiary education in Finland. In this study, the notion of multiple rights to study covers simultaneous, consecutive or unconnected (at several points in time) rights to study in higher education institutions. The study was funded by the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL). First, the respondents' social background was charted with statements concerning, for example, whether their parents had always encouraged them to study, whether their relatives had higher education degrees and whether their family thought that studying in higher education required exceptional talent. The respondents were asked about their reasons for starting their first higher education studies (e.g. it was important for their parents that they applied to higher education, they didn't have a clear idea of what they wanted to study, their friends applied to the same higher education institution). Next, the respondents' reasons for acquiring a second right to study were examined. Reasons relating to studying included, for example, feeling that the first studies were too difficult and finding a more interesting field of study. Reasons relating to working life and employment included, among others, preferring to be a student over being unemployed and wanting to develop vocational or professional skills. Reasons relating to family, housing and life in general included, for example, feeling a strong calling to the new field of study and wanting to study in the same place where a spouse or partner lived. Finally, the respondents were asked whether they had more than two rights to study in higher education, how many study credits they had received during their entire higher education studies, and whether they had at present or in the past had a study right for postgraduate studies (doctoral studies) or in a higher education institution abroad. The respondents were also asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed with statements concerning various reasons for applying to higher education (e.g. supporting the welfare and well-being of others, parents' disappointment in not acquiring a higher education degree). Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group (categorised based on year of birth) and information on the respondent's upper secondary education. Additionally, the highest level of education of the respondent's parents as well as their occupation during the respondent's last year in basic education were charted
Environmental Issues and Decision-Making 2018
Taustatietoina on arkistoitu kunkin asiantuntijaryhmän vastaajien ammattinimikkeet. Vastauksia ja nimikkeitä ei voi yhdistää.The data consist of expert interviews on the significance of controlling climate change and taking climate change mitigation into account in environment policy. 37 experts on forestry, agriculture and environment policies who worked in different sectors, organisations and occupations were interviewed. The interviews were conducted within a few weeks from the publication of the IPCC special report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. In addition to the interviews, five Academicians of Science responded in writing to a question on the significance of climate change. Slightly different interview schemes were used for each group of experts depending on their field of expertise. The interview questions charted, for example, the impacts of agriculture or forestry on the climate and ways to decrease any negative impacts. The experts also expressed their views on how climate change mitigation should be acknowledged in environment policy. Background information included the occupations of the experts. The occupations cannot be connected to the responses in the data. The dataset is only available in Finnish
Perceptions of Vocational Education: Ninth-Graders 2018
Yhdeksäsluokkalaisilta kysyttiin, aikovatko he jatkaa opiskelua peruskoulun jälkeen, missä koulutusvaihtoehdossa ja kuinka kiinnostavina he eri koulutusalavaihtoehtoja pitävät. Vastaajat myös kertoivat, mitkä tekijät vaikuttivat heidän jatko-opintovalintaansa. Vastaajat myös kertoivat, mistä he olivat saaneet tietoa ammatillisesta koulutuksesta. The survey charted ninth-graders' perceptions and opinions of vocational education and training in Finland. Main themes included, among others, the ninth-graders' plans after completing lower secondary school, perceptions of how general and vocational upper secondary education are appreciated, and opinions on studying. The study was commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Culture and Skills Finland. Data collection was conducted by IROResearch. First, opinions on studying were examined with various attitudinal statements concerning, for example, whether the respondents thought that studying was interesting, they studied because they had no other option, and their parents were interested in how they succeeded in their studies. The respondents were asked whether they would continue into upper secondary education after they had finished their lower secondary education, how interesting different paths of education were for them personally (e.g. general or vocational upper secondary education, tenth grade) and which educational path they would choose after completing lower secondary education. Factors affecting the respondents' choice when applying to upper secondary education (e.g. wanting to have a job with good pay, location of the school/educational facility, parents' opinions) were also surveyed. If the respondents indicated that they would choose vocational education or training after lower secondary school, they were asked what they thought they would do after completing the education or training (e.g. working straight away, studying more). Finally, the sources of the respondents' information on vocational education, such as school in general, parents or TV/radio, were charted. Background variables included the respondent's gender, mother tongue, municipality of residence, region of residence (NUTS3), parents' highest level of education and occupation group, self-perceived success in lower secondary school, and whether they had received any special support in school during the past two years
Gallup Ecclesiastica 2015
Evankelis-luterilaiseen kirkkoon kuuluvilta kysyttiin tärkeimpiä syitä kirkkoon kuulumiselle ja ovatko he ajatelleet kirkosta eroamista. Taustamuuttujina olivat muun muassa sukupuoli, syntymävuosi, aluemuuttujia, koulutus, ammatti/asema, talouden elinvaihe, lasten iät, talouden koko, talouden bruttotulot ja asunnon tyyppi. The survey studied the religiosity and church membership in Finland as well as people's participation in parish activities. Questions about faith, spiritual matters, and religious communities were asked. The respondents were first asked whether they were members of a church or other religious community. Those who were members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and Orthodox Church were asked about the importance of a number of reasons for the Church membership (e.g. the possibility to participate in Church service, act as a godparent, the Christian values taught by the Church, aid offered by the Church) and whether they had considered quitting the Church. Those who were not members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church were asked whether they had previously quit the Church, what their reasons for quitting had been, whether they had considered joining the Church, and whether they thought that Church members should be able to choose their parish instead of it being assigned according to their area of residence. Participation in parish activities was examined with questions relating to, for example, how often the respondents attended church services or voluntary parish work and how often they prayed, read the Bible, watched or listened to religious programmes on TV or radio, and visited web sites related to religion. A number of questions surveying satisfaction with the parish, its services, and communication were also presented. Next, opinions on issues relating to the Church and religion were examined. The respondents were asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed with statements regarding, for example, the ordination of women, same-sex marriage, and the presence of religion in schools and on TV. Opinions on the status of religious communities and presence of religion in society were charted with questions relating to, for example, whether all religious communities should have equal status in legislation and whether the visibility of religion was acceptable for public officials. Views were probed on the respondents' belief in God as well as the firmness of belief in a number of religious tenets and phenomena (e.g. a good God, angels, the Devil). Religious identity was examined by asking whether the respondents saw themselves as, for instance, religious, spiritual, Christian, Lutheran, religious conservative, atheist or agnostic. Membership in revivalist movements or Lutheran communities was queried as well. The respondents were also asked to choose which statements about religion and religious activities they thought described their childhood home and whether they had taught or would teach their children a bedtime prayer. Attitudes towards other religious communities were examined with questions regarding the gathering places of different religious communities in the respondent's area of residence and the use of visible religious symbols by public officials. The respondents were also asked how many members of other religious communities they knew. Attitudes towards Finland, Finnish nationality and different groups of people were also charted (e.g. whether the respondents thought that Finland was generally a better country than most others, that an essential part of being Finnish was to adopt Finnish customs, and that there would be less problems if everyone was treated equally). Finally, the respondents' personal values were examined with a number of statements regarding, for example, striving for the common good above personal gain, following the law, and gender equality. Statements on spiritual affairs such as the healing power of crystals and giving up a materialistic lifestyle were also presented. Opinions on death were examined with questions relating to what happens after death and how the respondents would want to be buried. The respondents were asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed with statements relating to work, family and leisure activities. Participation in voluntary or organizational activity as well as the most important factors in encouraging participation were also charted. Background variables included, among others, the respondent's year of birth, gender, NUTS2 and NUTS3 regions of residence, level of education, status in employment, household composition and household income
Professional Identity and Religious Beliefs of Children's Instructor Students 2017
The survey charted the professional motivation, identity and religiosity of Children's Instructor students in Christian Institutes of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Finland. This dataset is based on the third collection wave in a cohort study that followed students studying for an upper secondary qualification in Child Care, Education and Family Welfare as they progressed in their studies. The participating students started their studies in 2014. FSD collections also include the first (FSD3252) and second (FSD3262) waves of this study. The respondents' religiosity was investigated with questions about religious affiliation, religious identity (e.g. whether they identified themselves as spiritual persons and/or conservative in their religion) and how they believed in God. Finally, the respondents were asked to evaluate their abilities in aspects relating to their studies and work, such as guiding children and volunteers, cooperating with parents, or religious education, and to mark which of these aspects they felt had developed the most during their studies. Background variables included the respondent's educational institution and whether the respondent aimed for curriculum-based or competence-based qualification
