Cultural Distinctions, Generations and Change 1960-2010: Coverage in European Newspaper Articles
Aineistoon on koottu tietoja kuuden eurooppalaisen laatusanomalehden kulttuuriuutisten artikkeleista vuosilta 1960-2010. Lehdet ovat El País (ennen ABC) Espanjasta, The Guardian Iso-Britanniasta, Dagens Nyheter Ruotsista, Helsingin Sanomat Suomesta, Le Monde Ranskasta ja Milliyet Turkista. Aineistot on kerätty The Cultural Distinctions, Generations and Change: A Comparative Study of Five European Countries, 1960-2010 (CUDIGE) -hankkeessa, jossa tutkittiin kulttuurisia hierarkioita ja niiden muutoksia kuudessa Euroopan eri valtiossa. This study consists of data on articles in the culture sections of the following leading daily newspapers: Helsingin Sanomat (Finland), Dagens Nyheter (Sweden), The Guardian (Great Britain), Le Monde (France), ABC (1960-1975)/El país (1976-2010) (Spain) and Milliyet (Turkey). The articles were published between the years 1960 and 2010. The data were collected as part of the Cultural Distinctions, Generations and Change: A Comparative Study of Five European Countries, 1960-2010 (CUDIGE) project, which examined cross-national differences in cultural distinctions and their temporal changes in six different European countries. The project received funding from the Kone Foundation (2013-2016), University of Helsinki (2013-2015) and Academy of Finland (2013-2018, project numbers 291619 and 309181). In addition to this study, dataset FSD3386 Cultural Distinctions, Generations and Change 1960-2010: Coverage in European Newspaper Issues contains aggregate data where individual newspaper issues were studied. Extensive information on the variables and data collection can be found in the background information file bgF3385_eng.pdf. The data include information on what newspaper the article was published in, publication date, total number of pages in the newspaper issue and its culture section and the page number of the article. Information on other features of the articles, such as the type of the article, its location on the newspaper page and the size and contents of pictures in the article, is also included in the data. Additionally, the data include the name and gender (based on the name) of the writer of the article as well as whether the article included a picture of the writer. Next, the data contain information on the cultural area of the article, divided into the subgenres of dance, literature and music. If the article concerned a specific artist, information on the country of origin of the artist as well as the time horizon (historical/classic - future) of the event/artist/performer was collected. Finally, information on the narrative features of the articles was collected, for example, whether the article was written in first person, included explicit judgements on the piece of art treated in the article, and included explicit references to money or other economic indicators, politics or generations
YouGamble 2017: Additional Finnish Data
Aineistossa on käytetty seuraavia mittareita ja muuttujien nimissä niiden lyhenteitä: IBR = Samanmielisyys ja identiteettikuplat sosiaalisessa mediassa (Identity Bubble Reinforcement Scale), ATGS = Rahapeliasenteet (Attitudes Toward Gambling Scale), SOGS = Rahapeliongelmat (South Oaks Gambling Screen), CIUS = Internetin ongelmakäyttö (Compulsive Internet Use), AUDITC = Alkoholin ongelmakäyttö (The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), SISE = Itsetunto (Single-item Self-esteem Scale), LONE = Yksinäisyyden tunne (Three-item Loneliness Scale), GHQ = Psyykkinen kuormittuneisuus (General Health Questionnaire), MASTERY = Hallinnan tunne (Sense of Mastery Scale), EIS = Impulsiivisuus (Eysenck Impulsivity Scale) ja GRATIF = Palkintoviive (Delay of Gratification). This survey charted the gambling, social media usage and subjective well-being of young people aged 15-30 years in Finland. The study was conducted as part of the "Problem Gambling and Social Media: Social Psychological Study on Youth Behavior in Online Gaming Communities" research project. The aim of the project was to analyse how young social media users assess, adopt and share gambling-related online content and how online group processes affect their gambling and gambling-related attitudes. This dataset contains additional data collected from popular Finnish social media sites. FSD's holdings also include two other datasets that were collected using a nearly identical questionnaire (FSD3399 and FSD3591). Data for the research project have been collected in Finland, the United States, Spain, and South Korea. First, the respondents were asked which social media services they used (e.g. Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, discussion forums, online casinos) and how often. Topics that the respondents discussed on gambling-related social media were charted more closely, and they were asked, for example, whether the discussion usually related to instructions or tips on gambling or to problem gambling and recovering from problem gambling. Some questions on the respondents' social media activity were also presented, for instance, how often they saw gambling-related advertising online, how often they changed their most important social media passwords, and how often they uploaded pictures of themselves on social media. The respondents were asked whether they had ever been harassed online or had been the victim of a crime on the Internet in the past three years (e.g. defamation, identity theft, fraud, sexual harassment). The respondents' identity bubbles on social media were surveyed by using the IBR scale (Identity Bubble Reinforcement Scale). The respondents were asked, for instance, whether they thought they could be themselves on social media and whether they only interacted with people similar to them on social media. Additionally, the CIUS scale (Compulsive Internet Use) was used to examine problems related to Internet use. Questions focused on, for example, whether the respondents found it difficult to stop using the Internet when they were online, whether people close to them said they should use the Internet less, and whether they felt restless, frustrated or irritated when they couldn't use the Internet. In the next section of the questionnaire, the respondents were randomly assigned to two groups for a vignette experiment. Respondents in the test group were told they belong to Group C because they had answered the earlier questions in a similar manner to others in the group. Those in the control group were given no information on the group. The respondents were presented with different gambling-related social media scenarios, and they were asked to evaluate the contents of the gambling-related messages by "liking" or "disliking" the message or by not reacting to it at all. Each respondent was shown four different gambling messages with different contents. Three factors were manipulated in the scenarios (2x2x2 design): expressed stance of the message on gambling (positive or negative), narrative perspective of the message (experience-driven first-person narration or fact-driven third-person narration) and majority opinion of other respondents on the message (positively or negatively biased distribution of likes or dislikes). For Group C, the majority opinion was seemingly provided by other Group C members, whereas for the control group the majority opinion was seemingly provided by other respondents. Additionally, the respondents' attitudes towards the message were surveyed with statements regarding, for instance, how likely they would find the message interesting or share it on social media. Next, the respondents' attitudes towards gambling were charted by using the ATGS scale (Attitudes Towards Gambling Scale). They were asked, for example, whether people should have the right to gamble whenever they want, whether most people who gamble do so sensibly and whether it would be better if gambling was banned altogether. The respondents' gambling habits were examined by using the SOGS scale (South Oaks Gambling Screen), and they were asked, for instance, which types of gambling they had done in the past 12 months (played slot machines, visited an online casino, bet on lotteries etc.), whether the people close to them had gambling problems, and whether they had borrowed money to gamble or to pay gambling debts. In addition, the respondents' alcohol consumption was surveyed with a few questions from the AUDITC scale (The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), and they were asked whether they had used various drugs for recreational purposes (e.g. cannabis, LSD, amphetamine, opioids). The respondents' subjective well-being and social relationships were examined next. The respondents were asked how happy they were in general and how satisfied they were with their financial circumstances and life in general. They were also asked how well the single statement "I have high self-esteem" from the SISE scale (Single-item Self-esteem Scale) described them. The three statements on lacking companionship, feeling left out and feeling isolated from the LONE scale (Three-item Loneliness Scale) were also included in the survey. Feelings of belonging to different groups or communities (e.g. family, friends, neighbourhood, parish/religious community) were charted, and the 12-item GHQ scale (General Health Questionnaire) was used to survey the respondents' recent mental health. Questions included, for example, whether the respondents had been able to concentrate on what they were doing, had felt they couldn't overcome their difficulties, and had been losing confidence in themselves. Finally, the respondents' sense of control over the events in their lives was examined with the MASTERY scale (Sense of Mastery Scale), with questions focusing on, for instance, whether they thought they had little control over the things that happen to them and whether they often felt helpless in dealing with the problems of life. The respondents' impulsivity was surveyed by using the EIS scale (Eysenck Impulsivity Scale) and their willingness to delay gratification was surveyed with the GRATIF scale (Delay of Gratification). Background variables included the respondent's gender, age, country of birth (own and parents') level of education, type of municipality of residence, number of inhabitants in municipality of residence, household composition, disposable income, possible financial problems, and economic activity and occupational status

Career Success of Men and Women in Sports Management 2013
The survey examined the careers of Finnish executives and managers in the sporting industry and factors impacting career success. Themes included, for instance, career satisfaction, culture at current employer, gender equality, support for career advancement, and work-life balance. The data were collected for a doctoral dissertation studying differences in career success of male and female executives and managers in sports. First, background information relating to the respondents was surveyed along with questions related to the respondents' own sports and exercise habits. The respondents were asked how often they exercised and which types of sports they engaged in. Work experience in the industry (e.g. as a referee, coach, instructor) was also charted as well as whether the respondents attended sports events or otherwise followed any sports actively. Next, the respondents' careers were examined. They were asked how many different jobs they had had in the previous ten years, how many years of work experience they had in total, how many years they had spent in their current organisation and how many years in their current job. The total number of years in management positions was charted as well as the number of subordinates in their current job. The respondents were also asked to estimate their weekly working hours as well as how much they had to work at home. Gross monthly income was charted (categorised at FSD) as well as whether the respondents had negotiated a salary increase within the previous five years. They were also presented with attitudinal statements concerning professional networks and the impact of social relationships on career success. Possible interruptions to employment were charted (e.g. family leaves, unemployment, studies). The respondents' satisfaction with different aspects of their career development was charted, and it was examined how important they deemed different aspects of work (e.g. career advancement, pay, workplace culture and atmosphere). The next questions focused on the respondents' current employers. Questions charted number of employees, budget, and perceived success in relation to objectives in the previous two years. Attitudinal statements examined organisation culture with regard to e.g. recruitment, pay, employment contracts, gender equality, career possibilities and work-life balance. Sources of different types of support in the respondents' careers were examined. Finally, the respondents were asked questions concerning work-life balance as well as how housework was divided in their household. Background variables included age (categorised), gender, marital status, NUTS2 region, number of children, type of employer, educational level and graduation year (categorised)
Gelotophobia, Burnout and Workplace Bullying 2007
Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin gelotofobian eli naurun alaiseksi joutumisen pelon yleisyyttä Suomessa ja sen yhteyksiä työuupumukseen. Tutkimus on osa laajempaa kansainvälistä tutkimusta, johon osallistui 73 maata. The survey charted the prevalence of gelotophobia, the fear of being laughed at, in Finland and its connection to burnout. The survey is part of a larger multi-national study involving 73 countries. The survey utilises many scales developed for measuring humour and burnout. The scales include the Malach-Pines Burnout Measure (BMS), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS), Coping Humor Styles Questionnaire (CHS), Findlay-Kaufman MSHS humor coping scale, Humor Styles Questionnaire - Aggressive Humor (HSQ - agg) and Findlay-Kaufman MSHS hostile humor scale. First, the respondents were asked to assess their usual behaviour and attitudes in many different situations where an individual could feel they are being laughed at. The statements presented in the survey charted, for example, whether the respondents got suspicious when others laughed in their presence, did not hold eye contact because of fear of being disparagingly assessed, felt paralyzed when others made joking remarks about them, or avoided a place where they had made an embarrassing impression. Coping with humour was examined with questions relating to, for example, whether the respondents often lost their sense of humour when having problems, looked for something comical to say in tense situations, or used humour to express their feelings. The respondents were also presented with statements concerning aggressive and hostile humour (e.g. whether they used humour to bully and humiliate people they didn't like or used derisive humour to protect themselves from criticism). Next, the prevalence of different negative emotions in the respondents' everyday life was examined by asking questions on feelings of tiredness and hopelessness (e.g. whether they felt tired, disappointed with people, trapped or depressed). Some questions also surveyed whether the respondents had been the target of mental abuse or bullying. Finally, the prevalence of certain emotions and thoughts connected to work and work days was surveyed. Questions focused on, for example, whether the respondents felt emotionally drained from their work, thought they were good at their job or doubted the significance of their work. Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, marital status and occupational status, which indicates whether the respondent is in paid employment or not (in paid employment, unemployed, student, pensioner)
Intravenous Drug Use and Well-being 2013-2014
Tutkimuksessa kartoitettiin suomalaisten suonensisäisten huumeiden käyttäjien elämäntilanteita, hyvinvointia ja niihin vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Tavoitteena oli tuottaa tilastollista tietoa terveysneuvontapisteiden asiakkaiden elämästä. Sumuisten sielujen hyvinvointi (SUMU) -hanke on osa professori Juho Saaren johtamaa laajemmin suomalaisen yhteiskunnan huono-osaisia ryhmiä tarkastelevaa tutkimusohjelmaa. Hankkeeseen saatiin pilottivaiheessa pieni rahoitus Kuopion kaupungilta. The study surveyed the life situations and well-being of intravenous drug users as well as factors affecting their well-being. The data were collected as part of the research programme "Sumuisten sielujen hyvinvointi (SUMU)" led by professor Juho Saari examining disadvantaged groups in Finnish society. The project received a small funding from the city of Kuopio in the pilot phase. First, the respondents' satisfaction with their lives overall was examined, and they were presented with attitudinal statements concerning their own well-being and life management. Next, it was charted which services or social security benefits they or their family members had received during the previous two months. Satisfaction with the services was also covered along with their own motivation for change. Respondents at the service points of the Helsinki Deaconess Institute (HDL 1-3) were asked additional questions concerning e.g. how they thought their life would turn out a year after the time of the survey. Background variables included gender, age, education, economic activity and occupational status, housing tenure, whether the respondent had utilised the assistance of a food bank / breadline within the previous year, drug convictions within the previous two years, age when the respondent began using intravenous narcotics, religious affiliation, household composition, and income
Enhancing Leisure Time Activities: Survey for Ninth-Graders Spring 2016
The survey charted the perceptions, hopes and experiences of ninth-graders in Helsinki regarding their leisure time, well-being and relationships. The study is part of the Good Leisure Time Development and Research project by Helsinki City Youth Department. The research project followed the same students during their lower secondary school education between 2013 and 2017. First, sleeping and eating habits as well as time spent with friends were examined. Some questions focused on the respondents' relationships with classmates and teachers (e.g. whether their classmates helped them if needed and whether they experienced bullying or social exclusion from their classmates or teachers). Next, the respondents were asked what their favourite subject at school was, whether they thought their grades were good or bad and how often they missed school. They were also asked how much time they spent on homework daily and with whom they did their homework. Leisure time activities were charted with questions relating to, for example, who the respondents spent time with after school and where, and with whom the after-school activities were the most enjoyable or boring. Internet use and reading habits during leisure time were also charted. The respondents were asked to select their current leisure time hobbies from a long list of hobbies and activities (e.g. football, movie watching, martial arts, writing, console games, shopping). Next, the respondents were asked about their hobby-related opportunities. They were also asked to choose new hobbies and activities they would like to try from the same list they chose their current hobbies and leisure time activities from. The study also charted what the respondents thought of as either perfect or poor leisure time. Further questions focused on how they would rate their past Saturday in school grades (from 4 to 10) and what they would do after school on the day the survey was filled out. Motivations and influences behind the respondents' chosen leisure time activities and plans for the future were also examined (e.g. whether their parents, the media, or their role models had the most influence on their choices). Finally, the respondents were asked whether they had at least one person they liked spending time with or an activity that they liked doing, and whether they believed that they would be able to do things they like and spend time with people they like in the future. Background variables included the respondent's gender, mother tongue, living arrangements, household composition and number of siblings
Finnish Views on Complementary and Alternative Medicine 2018
The study examined Finnish views of alternative treatment methods and complementary therapy. First, the respondents were presented with a variety of treatment methods, and they were asked whether they believed that they could be used to treat illnesses or conditions (e.g. surgical operations, over-the-counter drugs, herbal medicines, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, chiropractic, hypnosis, diet, prayer). The respondents were also asked which of the treatments they or members of their family had personally used or tried as well as to what extent they had proven helpful. Next, the respondents were presented with the following statements with regard to a set of alternative treatments: whether the treatment should be generally accepted as a method of treatment, whether it should be regulated by legislation, whether the provider of the treatment should be liable for any damage caused, and whether providing the treatment to children or the seriously ill should be restricted by law. Finally, the respondents were asked which complementary or alternative treatments they had used in the previous 12 months. Background variables included, among others, gender, age, household composition, income group, economic activity and occupational status, educational level, region of residence, number of inhabitants in municipality of residence, number of persons living in the household, and number and ages of children living in the household
Helsingin Sanomat Loneliness Survey 2014
This survey charted Finnish experiences of loneliness. The survey was conducted by the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat in 2014 (N: 27,851). Themes of the survey included, among others, the circumstances and consequences of loneliness, satisfaction with life and well-being. The survey included an open-ended question q9 "What does loneliness feel like?", which can be utilised in qualitative analysis. Open-ended responses are only available in Finnish. First, the circumstances and consequences of loneliness in the respondents' lives were examined. The number of the respondents' close friends, i.e. friends with whom they could share the good and bad in life in confidence, was surveyed. The respondents were asked in which situations they had experienced loneliness in the past two years (e.g. with their spouse, children or friends, during holidays, at work) as well as in which stages of life they had experienced loneliness (e.g. as a child or an adult). They were also asked whether they had experienced loneliness during a specific season of the year in the past two years. The consequences of loneliness were charted with questions relating to whether the respondents had experienced, for example, frequent illnesses, unemployment, gambling, comfort eating or depression because of loneliness. Next, factors that had significantly helped the respondents alleviate loneliness in the past two years were surveyed (e.g. alcohol or drug use, the Internet, eating, immersing themselves in work, taking care of pets or other animals, exercise, time spent with family or friends). Feelings of loneliness, depression, failure, happiness and being loved or in love in the past 12 months were charted. Additionally, the respondents were asked how well various statements described them. The statements included, for instance, that the respondents felt unhappy because they were doing things alone, felt that no one really understood them, felt that it was hard for them to make friends, thought that they lived a goal-oriented and meaningful life, thought that they were a good person and lived a good life, and thought that others respected them. The respondents' satisfaction with specific domains of life, such as standard of living, personal health and personal safety, was also examined. Finally, the respondents' well-being was surveyed with questions on, for example, smoking, alcohol use, exercise habits and weight loss. Background variables included, among others, the respondent's gender, marital status, age, weight, height, sufficiency of income, highest level of education, subjective social class, NUTS3 region of residence and municipality of residence for municipalities with over 34,000 inhabitants
Interviews with Descendants of Finnish Workers in Kostamus 2018
The data consist of interviews with descendants of Finnish workers in Kostamus. Two of the interviewees had worked in Kostamus themselves. In the interviews, the interviewees recalled their life between the years 1977 and 1985 during the construction project in Kostamus in the Soviet Union, when many Finnish workers were employed there. The majority of the interviewees were either children or young people during the construction project. In the theme interviews, the interviewees were asked, for example, about their childhood memories during the project, their own relationship with Kostamus and the visits they had made to Kostamus. Additionally, interview questions focused on, for example, how the relationship between Finland and the Soviet Union had been visible in the interviewee's family life and whether the time period of the Kostamus project had had a larger meaning in their life. The interviewees were also asked about the 1980 Kostamus bus crash, which left many dead and injured, and whether the crash had closely touched their own family life. Background information included, among others, the interviewee's gender, year of birth and information on which family members had worked in Kostamus. The dataset is only available in Finnish
