Tutkimuksessa pyrittiin selvittämään, millainen yhteys motivoivan haastattelun käyttämisellä asiakastyössä on asiakkaiden päihteiden käyttöön. Tutkimusta on rahoittanut Suomen Akatemia. This study charted Finnish substance users' situation in life and alcohol and drug use. Main themes included the problems that arose from the respondents' substance use, their motivation to stop using substances, and their use of social services. Additionally, the data include evaluations of client meeting discussions between social counsellors and clients at A-clinics, which offer substance abuse and mental health services. The data were collected as part of a research project on the adherence of motivational interviewing in the initial substance abuse setting and its effect on clients' substance abuse harm reduction (the MISA project), funded by the Academy of Finland. The data consist of a pre-treatment survey, evaluations of counselling session discussions by both the counsellor and the client, and post-treatment surveys. The pre-treatment survey and the evaluations were completed during the counselling sessions, and the post-treatment surveys were completed as phone interviews six and twelve months after treatment. This dataset can be connected to the qualitative dataset FSD3368 Substance Abuse Treatment in Outpatient Clinics: Client Meetings 2008-2009, which consists of transcriptions of the counselling session discussions. The respondents in the two datasets can be connected with a unique client number. The qualitative dataset is only available in Finnish. The pre- and post-treatment surveys were nearly identical. First, the clients' situation in life and use of alcohol in the past six months were surveyed with questions from the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). The questions focused on, for example, how often the respondents consumed alcohol, how often they had not been able to stop drinking once they had started, how often they had felt guilt or remorse after drinking, and whether they had felt that their drinking had effected their social relationships negatively. The respondents' substance use was examined with questions regarding which substances they used and which substance was their principal opiate, i.e. for which opiate they were currently receiving treatment. Further questions on substance use were included from the Severity of Dependence Scale (SDS), for example, whether the respondents thought the use of their principal opiate was out of control and whether they wished they could stop using the opiate. Next, the pre-treatment survey charted the respondents' personal objectives regarding their substance use. The respondents were asked, for example, whether their objective was to achieve total abstinence or reduce their use of substances, or whether they though there was no need to change their substance use. Additionally, they were asked how sure they were that they would succeed in achieving their objective. Both the pre- and post-treatment surveys charted whether the respondents had any other addictions in addition to substances (e.g. a gambling, sex, or internet addiction). Finally, the treatment the respondents had received was examined in both surveys with questions on, for example, how many treatment periods they had received for substance use, whether they had received treatment for their substance use in the past six months, and whether they been on any medication to control their substance use in the past three months. For the evaluations of the counselling session discussions, the counsellors and clients were asked to evaluate different aspects of the discussion on a scale from 1 to 5. Both the clients and counsellors were asked, for example, whether they though the discussion had been good or bad, difficult or easy, useful or useless, or significant or insignificant. The client's perception of the attitude of the counsellor was charted with questions on, for example, whether the client thought the counsellor was judgemental or accepting, or unkind or kind. The counsellor's perception of the client's attitude was examined with questions regarding, for example, how much emotion the counsellor thought the client expressed and whether the client was willing or unwilling to work together with the counsellor during the discussion. Finally, the clients were asked to evaluate their own preparedness to stop or reduce substance use, and the counsellors were asked to evaluate whether the client had a strong will to change their behaviour and whether they were likely to continue treatment and reduce or stop substance use. Background variables included the client's age, gender, type of dwelling, marital status, level of education, employment status, and whether they had children

Tutkimusta on rahoittanut Suomen Akatemia. Vastaajilta tiedusteltiin, olivatko he äänestäneet vuoden 2015 eduskuntavaaleissa, ja mitä puoluetta he olivat äänestäneet. Vastaajat kertoivat, olivatko he tehneet erilaisia yhteiskunnallisen osallistumisen muotoja, kuten toimineet jossakin puolueessa tai allekirjoittaneet kansalaisaloitteen. Vastaajia pyydettiin arvioimaan, kuinka paljon he luottavat esimerkiksi eduskuntaan, hallitukseen, poliitikkoihin tai kuntapäättäjiin. Lisäksi kysyttiin yhteiskunnallista tietämystä mittaavia kysymyksiä ja vastaajan omaa sijoittumista vasemmisto-oikeisto-akselille. Lopuksi vastaajat ottivat kantaa terveyspalveluihin liittyviin väittämiin, kuten pitäisikö hyvätuloisten maksaa pienituloisia enemmän julkisista terveyspalveluista, tai pitäisikö terveys- ja sosiaalipalvelut tuottaa ensisijaisesti julkisina palveluina. Taustatietoja aineistossa ovat syntymävuosi, sukupuoli, äidinkieli, kotitalouden yhteenlasketut bruttokuukausitulot, koulutus, siviilisääty, kotitalouden koko, mahdollisen työttömyyden kesto sekä ammatti. The study charted health and its effect on political engagement among the Finnish population. Main themes in the study were voting behaviour in 2015 parliamentary elections, political participation, health status, political trust and views on health services. The study received funding from the Academy of Finland. The respondents were first asked how interested they were in politics, whether they had voted in the previous parliamentary elections and for which party, and whether they thought voting was a civic duty. Political participation was surveyed with questions about different forms of participation engaged in, such as contacting a politician, participating in an association or organisation, boycotting, and expressing views on social media. Health status was charted by asking the respondents how they perceived their health, whether they had a long-term health problem that hampered their daily activities, how long they had suffered from the health problem, whether it had affected their civic engagement and whether they had been discriminated against because of the problem. Further questions about health status surveyed the ability to care for oneself, pain and symptoms, anxiety and depression, long-term health issue of a loved one, height and weight, and illnesses diagnosed by a doctor in the previous 12 months (e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, depression, asthma). Political attitudes were charted with questions about how complicated the respondents regarded politics, how much say they thought they had in decision-making, their satisfaction with how democracy worked in Finland, and trust in political actors (e.g. the Parliament, political parties, the Government, public servants). Trust in other people was also charted as well as knowledge about political issues and self-placement on the left-right scale. Opinions on health services were surveyed by asking the respondents, for instance, about the quality of Finnish health services, whether wealthy people should pay more for their health services, whether public health services should be improved even if it meant raising taxes, and whether fees should be increased for treating diseases associated with certain habits and lifestyle choices (smoking, overuse of alcohol, lack of exercise). Background variables included the respondent's year of birth, gender, mother tongue, education and occupation as well as the length of potential unemployment, the size of the household and its monthly gross income

Kysely on toteutettu osana Turun yliopiston Pohjois-Amerikan tutkimuksen John Morton -keskuksen Tragediauutisoinnin haasteet - median mahdollisuudet käsitellä kouluampumisia (#TRAGE) tutkimushanketta. Tutkimus on Helsingin Sanomain säätiön rahoittama. Aluksi vastaajilta kysyttiin, kuinka usein he tuottavat journalistista sisältöä väkivaltatapauksista ja mikä on heidän mielestään toimittajan tehtävä. Lisäksi tiedusteltiin vastaajien kokemusta journalistisesta vapaudesta ja ammatillisesta itsenäisyydestä. Aineistossa kartoitettiin laajasti vastaajien näkemyksiä eettisestä journalismista: avokysymyksissä kysyttiin esimerkiksi, mitkä ovat vastaajan mielestä suurimpia eettisiä haasteita ja toisaalta mitkä keskeisimpiä journalistisia tavoitteita kouluampumisten ja vastaavien tragedioiden uutisoinnissa. Lisäksi useissa kysymyksissä selvitettiin vastaajan näkemystä siitä, miten uhreja ja epäiltyä tulisi käsitellä mediassa. Vastaajilta tiedusteltiin myös heidän taustaorganisaatioidensa toimintatapoja tragediauutisoinnissa sekä miten he itse käsittelevät traagisten aiheiden käsittelystä aiheutunutta stressiä. Lopuksi kysyttiin, onko vastaajan Twitterin käytöstä sekä kuinka paljon vastaaja näkee sosiaalisen median muuttaneen journalismia. Taustamuuttujina aineistossa ovat ikä, sukupuoli, työkokemus, vastaajan organisaation pääasiallinen kohdeyleisö, onko organisaatio alueellinen vai paikallinen, vastaajan rooli organisaatiossaan ja yleisin formaatti, jossa vastaaja tuottaa uutisia, sekä edellisissä vaaleissa äänestetty puolue. The survey charted the professional experiences, values and opinions of journalists working for Finnish news media regarding the objectives of the media and the ethical challenges when reporting on cases of violence, specifically school shootings. The survey was conducted as part of the #TRAGE research project by the University of Turku John Morton Center for North American Studies. The project examines the media's reporting on school shootings and aims to open a new avenue for discussing the challenges posed by such reporting. The project is funded by the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation. First, the respondents were asked how often they had reported on cases of violence or on school shootings, how independently they could plan and carry out journalistic content, and whether they felt they had enough journalistic freedom. Questions also focused on what the respondents thought were the biggest challenges in reporting school shootings and whether they thought there had been a specific shooting that changed the way tragedy is reported. Additionally, the respondents were asked whether tragedy journalism and its conventions and impacts had been separately discussed in their organisation. The survey also extensively charted the journalists' views on ethical journalism with questions on, for instance, whether they thought it possible that one set of ethical guidelines could be applied by all journalists globally and what they thought were the best tools for preparing a journalist to create ethical content (e.g. ethical guidelines, workshops or supplementary education, advice from a colleague). Next, the respondents were asked what they thought was essential information that should be published when reporting on tragedy (e.g. suspect's name or photo, names or photos of victims). Views on the motivation and reasons behind school shootings were examined, and the respondents were asked whether they were familiar with and adhered to the 'No notoriety' principle. Furthermore, the respondents' opinions on what should be taken into particular consideration when dealing with underage victims and what kind of responsibilities a journalist has when reporting on traumatising events were surveyed. Finally, the respondents were asked how they dealt with the stress caused by reporting on tragedy, whether they had a personal Twitter account and how openly they shared their personal opinions on their Twitter account, and whether they thought social media had changed journalism. Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, work experience, role at work, and which political party they voted for in the last elections. Additionally, background information was collected on the format in which the respondent usually published news content, the primary target audience of the news media/organisation they worked for, and whether the news media/organisation was local or regional

Loput kysymykset koskivat vastaajan raskauskokemuksia. The study charted Finnish views on ideals and plans about having children. Main themes included starting a family, the ideal size of a family, pregnancy, obstacles faced in having children, personal partnership and desire to have a baby. The study was funded by the Family Federation of Finland, Alli Paasikivi Foundation and Suomen kotien kukkasrahasto foundation. The first set of questions focused on the personal partnerships of the participants, investigating, for example, satisfaction with the relationship and expectations for the relationship in the future. The respondents' childhood homes were studied with questions on, for example, happiness, conflicts, financial problems and support received from parents. Some questions focused on children, charting, for example, the housing arrangements of the children and whether the respondent and their spouse had children from previous relationships. Pregnancy was examined through questions relating to the most important reasons behind the decision to have a child, specifically the respondent's youngest child, (e.g. the desire to have a sibling for older children or a strong desire to have a baby) as well as any challenges and concerns faced when the child was born (e.g. financial circumstances, health of the parents or the baby). Ideal family size and the appriopriate age to become a parent or have the last child were surveyed. Next, the respondents were asked questions relating to pregnancy. Questions examined, for example, willingness and hope for pregnancy (either the respondent or their spouse) in the near future, reasons for not having a child and the perceived impacts having a baby would have on the respondents' lives (e.g. financial problems, less opportunities for work, positive impact on relationships and social life). Values and attitudes were also charted with questions focusing on, for example, the importance of work, family and hobbies in the respondents' lives and the feelings they had when interacting with babies and children (e.g. whether they wanted to have a child after holding a baby or wanted to get as far away as possible when hearing a baby cry). Statements relating to not wanting to have children after interacting with someone else's child or seeing them cry or have a tantrum were presented to both those who had and did not have children. Health-related questions investigated satisfaction with life, smoking, alcohol use, birth control methods and mental health. Finally, the respondents who were women were asked about their pregnancies and experiences related to pregnancies. The time spent trying to get pregnant, the number of times the respondent had been pregnant, possible fertility treatments and miscarriages were charted. Background variables included, among others, the respondent's gender, year of birth, number of children, marital status, household composition, perceived social class, level of education and annual personal and household income. Information was also collected on the spouse's gender, year of birth, level of education and occupational status

The data charted the careers and employment situations of Finnish doctoral graduates three years after they had obtained their degree in 2014. Themes of the survey included impact of a doctoral degree on employment, job satisfaction and development suggestions for doctoral education. The respondents were first asked to what extent different reasons had impacted their decision to take up a doctoral degree, and how they had financed their studies. They were asked to estimate the share of time they had spent on their doctoral dissertation alongside other work at the university. Relating to employment situation and quality of work, questions charted how the degree had affected the respondents' status in the job market and what their occupational status was at the time of the survey and what it had been 6 months before starting the degree and 6 months after finishing it. The respondents were asked if they had been unemployed after finishing their degree, and reasons were charted that potentially had hindered their employment. The respondents who were in paid work were asked the type of their current work tasks and the competences needed in their work. It was also examined whether a doctoral degree was a prerequisite for their current job as well as how well the respondents' work corresponded to their qualifications. Gross monthly income was also charted. With regard to the significance of a doctoral degree in occupational life, opinions were charted on whether the topic of the respondent's doctoral dissertation had been useful in employment, whether having a doctoral degree had led to an increased salary and better standing in occupational life, and whether doctoral education was useful when it came to employment and skills needed in occupational life. Relating to developing and improving doctoral education, views were probed on the guidance received during studies, satisfaction with the studies, and things that should be emphasised in the education (e.g. teaching skills, entrepreneurship). Background variables included the respondent's gender, field of study, and age at the time of graduation (dichotomised "under 36"/"36 and over")

Edelleen kysyttiin, kuinka suurta luottamusta vastaajat tuntevat yhteiskunnan eri toimijoita kohtaan. Vastaajia pyydettiin arvioimaan, miten tärkeää on elää demokraattisesti hallitussa maassa, miten demokraattisesti Suomea hallitaan tällä hetkellä ja mitä mieltä he olisivat erilaisista poliittisista järjestelmistä Suomen hallintojärjestelmänä. Lisäksi kartoitettiin, kuinka suuriksi tai pieniksi uhkiksi vastaajat kokevat esimerkiksi hybridivaikuttamisen, terrori-iskun, tietovarkauden tai ilmaston lämpenemisen. Lopuksi vastaajat arvioivat, miten viime vuosien pakolaiskriisi Euroopassa on muuttanut heidän omaa suhtautumistaan Suomeen suuntautuvaan maahanmuuttoon ja kertoivat, miten he suhtautuvat EU- ja EMU-jäsenyyteen ja euroon. Taustamuuttujia olivat sukupuoli, ikäryhmä, asuinkunnan koko, asuinmaakunta, peruskoulutus, ammatillinen koulutus, ammattiryhmä, työnantaja, työsuhde, toimiala, puoluekanta (mitä puoluetta äänestäisi, jos eduskuntavaalit pidettäisiin nyt), ammatillinen keskusjärjestö ja yhteiskuntaluokka. The survey charted the values and attitudes of Finnish people. The 2020 spring survey was collected during the first months of the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2) crisis, and main themes included the coronavirus pandemic and its effects on society, economy and employment in Finland. Other themes were trust, security and preparedness for different types of threats. First, the respondents were presented with attitudinal statements concerning society, politics, effects of COVID-19, the Government's actions to combat COVID-19, trust in authority, climate change, and immigration. Next, the survey examined the respondents' working arrangements after the Government had first given suggestions on remote work due to the coronavirus pandemic. The respondents were also asked to what extent they considered the coronavirus epidemic a threat to themselves, their family and friends and Finnish people generally in terms of health, finances and economy. The respondents were also asked to estimate what kinds of effects the COVID-19 epidemic would have on Finnish society and economy in the coming years, and whether the respondents had an optimistic or pessimistic view of the future personally, for Finland, for Europe and globally. The respondents' trust was charted toward different actors in society (e.g. Parliament, authorities, EU, corporations, media). The respondents also estimated the likelihood of different global developments in the next ten years effected by some kind of crisis. They were also asked to assess the importance of living in a democratically governed nation and their attitudes toward alternative systems of governance for Finland. Additionally, the respondents' views were examined on the severity of threats such as hybrid operations, terrorist attack, data theft, economic crisis and global warming. Finally, the respondents were asked to assess how the recent refugee crisis had affected their views on immigration to Finland. Their attitudes toward EU and EMU membership were also charted. Background variables included gender, age group, size of the respondent's municipality of residence, region of residence, education, economic activity and occupational status, employment sector, political party preference (which party the respondent would vote for) and self-perceived social class

Aineisto koostuu viiden Jyväskylässä maahanmuuttajien kotouttamistyötä tekevän organisaation työntekijöiden haastattelulitteraatioista. Tutkittavista organisaatioista suurimman osan toimintaa ei ole kohdistettu yksinomaan maahanmuuttajille, vaan toiminta suunnataan kaikille kaupunkilaisille henkilöiden taustasta riippumatta. Haastatteluja on yhteensä kuusi, joista yksi on parihaastattelu. This dataset consists of interview transcripts with employees of five organisations involved in immigrant integration in Jyväskylä, Finland. For most of the organisations studied in this dataset, organised activities are not exclusively aimed at immigrants, but rather at all residents in the city regardless of their background. There are six interviews in total, including one pair interview. Interview questions focused on, for example, how the interviewee's organisation supported the integration of immigrants into society, what kind of multicultural work the organisation did, and whether there were any ideologies behind the organisation's activities. The interviewees were also asked about their own background in working with immigrants (e.g. how many years they had been working with immigrants) as well as their perceptions of their organisation's challenges and successes in immigrant integration. Background information included, among others, the interviewee's organisation and gender. The dataset is only available in Finnish
