Citizens' Pulse 1/2021
The Citizens' Pulse surveys examine Finnish attitudes and opinions in the context of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Main themes in the surveys include the activity and communication of authorities, compliance with regulations, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. The first collection round of 2021 surveyed the respondents' trust in other people and in various institutions, such as the Finnish Government, the health care system, and the media. The respondents were asked to evaluate how well Finnish authorities (including the Government, Ministries, and other authorities such as the police and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare) had been prepared for disease outbreaks such as the coronavirus epidemic. The respondents' state of mind was examined with questions on various matters relating to health and well-being. The questions covered, for example, whether the respondents were worried about their own risk or the risk of people close to them of falling ill with COVID-19, the availability of health care for them and people close to them for issues unrelated to COVID-19, and their own mental well-being. Additionally, the respondents' concerns were charted with questions regarding livelihood and everyday life (e.g. whether they were worried about the adequacy of their income or the income of people close to them, the uncertainty regarding how long the exceptional circumstances would last, and their children's schooling). Next, the respondents' trust in their future and experiences of stress were surveyed. The respondents were asked to evaluate whether an atmosphere of crisis prevailed amongst Finns. Household loans and the financial burden caused by them were also examined, and the availability and findability of relevant information on the coronavirus crisis was charted. The respondents were asked whether they thought the communication of authorities had been impartial, reliable, valid, clear, swift, and open. Compliance with coronavirus restrictions was examined by asking the respondents whether they had observed the restrictions and recommendations set by authorities for preventing transmission of the virus, including maintaining safe distances, washing hands regularly, wearing a face mask, avoiding touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands, using a hand sanitiser when available in public places, and minimising contacts with people outside immediate family and friends. Finally, the respondents' views on the coronavirus vaccine were surveyed. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, NUTS3 region of residence, highest level of education, household composition, and perceived financial situation of household

Alcohol and Drug Survey 2018
Vastaajilta kysyttiin esimerkiksi, tuntevatko he huumeidenkäyttäjiä ja onko heille tarjottu huumeita. Edelleen oltiin kiinnostuneita, kuinka helppoa vastaajien mielestä erilaisia huumausaineita olisi hankkia. The 2018 Alcohol and Drug Survey studied the substance use of Finnish adult population as well as attitudes and opinions on drugs and drug policies. Additionally, the survey charted legal drug or medicinal product abuse and use of performance-enhancing drugs (doping). The respondents were first asked about smoking and snus use. Alcohol use was charted by asking the respondents how often they drank and how much they tended to drink. The survey also carried a set of attitudinal statements about the health risks of different substances. The respondents were also asked if certain actions, such as polydrug use or growing cannabis plants, should be punishable by law. Regarding cannabis, the respondents were asked whether it should be legal to buy cannabis, and if it were legal, where it should be sold. The respondents' cannabis use was charted by asking them if they had used cannabis in the previous 12 months, and whether their cannabis use was recreational or medical. Ways of obtaining and using cannabis were investigated. The respondents were also asked if they knew people who grew cannabis or if they had grown cannabis themselves. The respondents were asked which illegal drugs they would try if using them was not illegal, and whether they personally knew people who used illegal drugs. They were also asked if someone had offered them illegal drugs, and how easily they thought they could obtain drugs within 24 hours. Concerning the respondents' own drug use, they were asked if they had ever used any of the various drugs listed, such as cocaine or LSD. The respondents' recent drug use was charted by asking which illegal drugs they had used during last 12 months and the last 30 days. Furthermore, the respondents were asked if drug use had ever caused difficulties in different areas of their life. One set of questions surveyed which legal drugs, if any, the respondents had used for non-medical purposes. Reasons for non-medical use of legal drugs were investigated. The respondents were also asked where they had obtained the drugs. Use of nitrous oxide and glues was examined. Polydrug use was investigated by asking the respondents which combinations of drugs they had used and what their reasons for using them were. Use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports (doping) was surveyed. Opinions on drug use were probed with several statements, such as "Use of marijuana and hashish should be legal". The respondents were also asked if they feared that other people's drug use could cause them physical harm, and whether they considered drugs or alcohol to be the bigger social problem in Finland. The most important sources of information on drugs for the respondents were surveyed. The respondents' health was charted by asking them if they had been prescribed different medicines, such as anti-depressants or opiates. The respondents were also asked if they attributed any health problems to their alcohol or drug use. Finally, the respondents were asked how often they engaged in physical activities. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age, type of municipality, marital status, household composition, education, and economic activity and occupational status
Diaconia Barometer 2018
Tutkimuksen on rahoittanut Kirkon tutkimuskeskus. Diaconia Barometers chart Finnish diaconal workers' experiences of their work and views of current topics in diaconia. The topics of the 2018 survey included the communications and engagement of diaconal work, everyday diaconal work and its challenges, and the Christian orientation of diaconal workers. The survey was funded by the Church Research Institute. The respondents were first asked questions about diaconal communications. These charted who was responsible for communications in the parish, what kind of channels were used in communications, whether the parish had a communications plan, and how the parish engaged with different people and organisations in terms of diaconal work. The effect of digitalisation on diaconal work was surveyed with questions about the use of different digital tools. A number of questions concerning everyday diaconal work were asked including, for example, what kind of people the respondents encountered in their work (e.g. persons who have to resort to food aid continuously, elderly people with memory loss, undocumented immigrants), how much time they spent on different tasks and what proportion of their tasks they regarded as diaconal work. The respondents were asked to what extent they agreed with statements relating to diaconal work in a changing society and church. Another set of questions charted things that increased workload, support received from various resources and satisfaction with supervision. The respondents were also asked who was responsible for different tasks in their parish. The number of applicants to vacancies in diaconal work in the parish in 2017 were charted as well as the number of vacancies at the time of the survey. The Christian orientation of the respondents and their work community was surveyed by asking whether they believed in the triune God, in which Christian practices they participated (e.g. prayer, worship service, Eucharist), how Christianity was visible in their work and at the workplace (e.g. offering to pray for or with a client, reading the Bible with a client, values of the work community aligned with personal values). Background variables included the number of inhabitants in the municipality of the respondent's workplace, the respondent's age, educational background, gender, work experience in the field, and diocese
Substance Abuse Treatment in Community Sanctions Offices: Pre- and Post-treatment Surveys 2007-2010
Tutkimuksessa pyrittiin selvittämään, millainen yhteys Viisi keskustelua muutoksesta (VKM) -ohjelman käyttämisellä asiakastyössä on asiakkaiden päihteiden käyttöön. This study charted Finnish community sanctions clients' situation in life and alcohol and drug use. Main themes included the problems that arose from the respondents' substance use, their motivation to stop using substances, and their use of social services. Additionally, the data include evaluations of client meeting discussions between community sanctions office employees and clients. The data were collected as part of a research project on the adherence of motivational interviewing in the initial substance abuse setting and its effect on clients' substance abuse harm reduction (the MISA project), funded by the Academy of Finland, Criminal Sanctions Agency and Finnish Foundation for Alcohol Studies. The data consist of a pre-treatment survey, evaluations of counselling session discussions by both the counsellor and the client, post-treatment surveys, and background information surveys for both the client and the employee. The pre-treatment survey, evaluations and background information surveys were completed during the counselling sessions, and the post-treatment surveys were completed as phone interviews six and twelve months after treatment. This dataset can be connected to the qualitative dataset FSD3370 Substance Abuse Treatment in Community Sanctions Offices: Client Meetings 2007-2009, which consists of transcriptions of the counselling session discussions. The respondents in the two datasets can be connected with a unique client number. The qualitative dataset is only available in Finnish. The pre- and post-treatment surveys were nearly identical. First, the clients' situation in life and use of alcohol in the past six months were surveyed with questions from the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). The questions focused on, for example, how often the respondents consumed alcohol, how often they had not been able to stop drinking once they had started, how often they had felt guilt or remorse after drinking, and whether they had felt that their drinking had effected their social relationships negatively. The respondents' substance use was examined with questions regarding which substances they used and which substance was their principal opiate, i.e. for which opiate they were currently receiving treatment. Further questions on substance use were included from the Severity of Dependence Scale (SDS), for example, whether the respondents thought the use of their principal opiate was out of control and whether they wished they could stop using the opiate. Next, the pre-treatment survey charted the respondents' personal objectives regarding their substance use. The respondents were asked, for example, whether their objective was to achieve total abstinence or reduce their use of substances, or whether they though there was no need to change their substance use. Additionally, they were asked how sure they were that they would succeed in achieving their objective. Both the pre- and post-treatment surveys charted whether the respondents had any other addictions in addition to substances (e.g. a gambling, sex, or internet addiction). Finally, the treatment the respondents had received was examined in both surveys with questions on, for example, how many treatment periods they had received for substance use, whether they had received treatment for their substance use in the past six months, and whether they been on any medication to control their substance use in the past three months. They were also asked whether they had found the Behaviour-Interviewing-Change (BIC) program, which was utilised during the client meetings, useful for their substance abuse rehabilitation. For the evaluations of the counselling session discussions, the counsellors and clients were asked to evaluate different aspects of the discussion on a scale from 1 to 5. Both the clients and counsellors were asked, for example, whether they though the discussion had been good or bad, difficult or easy, useful or useless, or significant or insignificant. The client's perception of the attitude of the counsellor was charted with questions on, for example, whether the client thought the counsellor was judgemental or accepting, or unkind or kind. The counsellor's perception of the client's attitude was examined with questions regarding, for example, how much emotion the counsellor thought the client expressed and whether the client was willing or unwilling to work together with the counsellor during the discussion. Finally, the clients were asked to evaluate their own preparedness to stop or reduce substance use, and the counsellors were asked to evaluate whether the client had a strong will to change their behaviour and whether they were likely to continue treatment and reduce or stop substance use. In the background information surveys, additional information on the BIC program and the progress of the client meeting discussions was collected. Additionally, the counsellor's previous experiences of substance abuse care and the BIC program were charted. Background variables included, among others, the client's and counsellor's gender, marital status and level of education

Edelleen oltiin kiinnostuneita luottamuksesta yhteiskunnallisiin instituutioihin, tyytyväisyydestä harjoitettuun politiikkaan, uskonnollisuudesta ja yhteiskunnallisista arvoista. Taustamuuttujina ovat koulutus, työllisyyshistoria, työpaikan toimiala, ammatti, ammattiasema, työantajasektori, työaika, siviilisääty, lasten lukumäärä, kotitalouden koko, tulot, kansallinen ryhmä, äidinkieli, uskontokunta, ikä, sukupuoli ja paikkakuntatyyppi. This study is part of a survey series that charts various issues characterising social differentiation in contemporary Russian society. The surveys in the series have been conducted in 1990, 1998, 2006 and 2015, facilitating research on temporal change. Social differentiation in this study was mainly considered in terms of occupation, social mobility, property and income, but attitudes, politics and religion were also examined. The study aimed to survey the respondents' conditions in life together with their values in order to examine the interaction between the two. Many questions in the survey concerned the respondents' working life and employment history. The respondents' education history was also surveyed. Questions focused on, for example, how the respondents had gotten their current job, what kind of responsibilities, obligations and independence the respondents had in their work, and whether the respondents were in a decision-making position at work. The respondents were asked whether they had been unemployed since 2008 and if yes, how they had managed economically at the time (e.g. whether they received benefits from the employer or state or support from family or friends). Additionally, the respondents were asked if they were self-employed at present and whether they had a second job. The influence of trade unions in the respondents' workplace was also charted. The survey also included questions on the respondents' family, leisure time, access to medical care, Internet use, political and social activity, and language competence. The most important sources of income for the respondents' family as well as the benefits they received from the state or from employers were examined. Access to medical care was charted with questions on where the respondents and their family received medical care (e.g. local hospitals or private clinics) and whether various factors restricted their access to medical care (e.g. doctor services being too expensive or clinics being too far away). The respondents were also asked about their Internet use, for example, where they usually connected to the Internet and how often they used it for various purposes. The respondents' political activity was charted with questions on, for example, whether they had signed a petition or taken part in a strike in 2013 or 2014. Questions on social participation focused on whether the respondents took part in the activities of, for example, religious, ecological or youth organisations. Opinions on the significance of different conditions in providing advancement in society were surveyed. The respondents were asked to evaluate the importance of, for example, coming from a rich family, good education, hard work, contacts abroad, and luck. Finally, the respondents' views on the main reasons for poverty (e.g. being unlucky or lacking talent) and threats to Russia (e.g. differences between the rich and poor or between men and women) were surveyed. Background variables included, among others, the respondent's employment history, status in employment, working hours, education, marital status, number of children, household size, income, owned household durable goods, religious affiliation, nationality, gender, age, and type of municipality of residence
Gambling Survey 2019
Tutkimuksessa on käytetty seuraavia mittareita: Attitudes Towards Gambling Scale (ATGS-8), South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), Mental Health Inventory (MHI-5), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) ja Gaming Addiction Scale (GAS-7). The survey charted Finnish gambling habits, frequency of gambling, amount of money gambled as well as views on problem gambling and gambling policy and regulation. The term gambling is used here as an umbrella term for lotteries, slot machines, betting, bookmaking, the pools, roulette wheels, and card and dice tables as well as online variations of all of these. First perceptions on gambling were studied. The respondents were asked to what extent they agreed with statements relating to gambling, such as "people should have the right to gamble whenever they want" and "gambling is detrimental to family life." Views were also charted on gambling advertisements, Finnish gambling policy and ways to restrict gambling. The next section of the survey focused on the respondents' experiences of gambling. The respondents were presented with a list of various games (e.g. lotto games and scratch cards, games of chance in a casino, slot machines and online games provided by the state-owned company Veikkaus Oy) and asked whether they had played them during the previous 12 months and how often. The respondents were also asked how often they had played games of chance offered by other gaming companies online, which kinds, and why they had played these instead of the games of Veikkaus Oy. Further questions surveyed Veikkaus membership, perceptions of harmful game types, and usefulness of the ways offered by Veikkaus to control problem gambling. The respondents were also asked to estimate the average sum spent on gambling in the previous 12 months and to list the places in which they had gambled and their reasons for gambling. The respondents' relationship to gambling was examined. They were asked how often they returned another day to try to win back the money they had lost, whether they had claimed to be winning at gambling even though they were actually losing money, whether they had gambled more than they had intended to, and whether other people had criticised them for gambling. Some questions explored whether the respondents had felt guilty while gambling, whether they had wanted to stop betting money or gambling but could not do so, and whether they had hidden their gambling habits from family members. Some questions covered arguments with the people the respondents lived with over how the respondents handled money and whether those arguments had centred on their gambling. Gambling debts were surveyed by asking whether the respondents had borrowed money from different people or sold their assets to pay off the debts. Regarding gambling by family members, relatives and friends, the respondents were asked whether any people close to them had problems with gambling, what kind of harm these gambling problems had caused, and how much concern the problems had caused the respondents. The final section pertained to health, well-being and non-gambling games. The respondents were asked whether they played video games or mobile games, how many hours they had played them in the previous week and month, whether they had made any in-game purchases (e.g. virtual items or characters, in-game currency), and whether they felt they might have a problem with these kinds of games. The respondents were asked to assess their current health status and were asked how often they had felt nervous, calm, despondent and happy in the previous four weeks. Finally, alcohol use was charted. The following scales and inventories were used in the survey: Attitudes Towards Gambling Scale (ATGS-8), South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), Mental Health Inventory (MHI-5), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) and Gaming Addiction Scale (GAS-7). Background variables included the respondent's year of birth, gender, marital status, region, municipality type, education, monthly net income, economic activity and occupational status
Everyday Experiences of Poverty: Self-administered Writings 2019
Osa teksteistä on kirjoitettu elämäntarinalliseen muotoon. This dataset consists of 89 texts written for a writing competition titled 'Everyday Experiences of Poverty' in 2019 in Finland. The aim was to collect varied experiences of poverty and to better understand Finnish poverty. The writing competition was organised by a research team in collaboration with the European Anti-Poverty Network Finland (EAPN-Fin) and the Who Listens to the Poor? network. The data were collected as part of dissertation research, which was funded by Kone Foundation. The participants were guided to write truthfully about their own experiences of poverty and to discuss new perspectives on poverty in contemporary society. The writers were instructed to write ten pages of prose at most. The competition was endorsed by many Finnish organisations promoting health and well-being. The texts described everyday life in the shadow of poverty, the reasons behind poverty, and the effects of poverty on daily life choices. The writers also discussed different ways of coping with poverty and how poverty had affected their close relationships. Similar data collections have been conducted before (FSD2413 Everyday Experiences of Poverty: Self-administered Writings 2006 and FSD2795 Everyday Experiences of Poverty 2012: Follow-up Study). The respondents in the previous studies cannot be connected to the respondents in this study. Background information included the respondent's name or pseudonym, gender, age, area of residence, level of education, and occupation. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish
Indebtedness and Related Feelings of Shame 2019-2020
The Citizens' Pulse surveys examine Finnish attitudes and opinions in the context of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Main themes in the surveys include the activity and communication of authorities, compliance with regulations, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. The third collection round of 2021 surveyed the respondents' trust in other people and in various institutions, such as the Finnish Government, the health care system, and the media. The availability and findability of relevant information on the coronavirus crisis was charted. The respondents' views on the coronavirus vaccine were also surveyed. Finally, some questions on the upcoming municipal elections (spring/summer 2021) were presented. The respondents were asked whether they were going to vote in the elections and if yes, whether they would vote during the advance voting period or on election day. Additionally, the respondents were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with statements regarding safe voting during COVID-19 and the postponement of the elections from April to June, which was under discussion at the time of the survey. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, NUTS3 region of residence, highest level of education, household composition, and perceived financial situation of household
