Finnish Perceptions of Poverty and Welfare Support 2015
Helsingin Sanomien vuonna 2015 keräämässä kyselyssä kartoitetaan suomalaisten näkemyksiä köyhyydestä. Kysely on osa Kaksi Suomea - kasvaako eriarvoisuus -tutkimusta, joka kuuluu Koneen säätiön rahoittamaan Jakautuuko Suomi? -hankkeeseen. Vastaajia pyydettiin arvioimaan omaa asemaansa numeerisesti ja kertomaan, kuinka läheltä on kohdannut kyselyssä lueteltuja köyhyyteen liitettäviä asioita (esim. pitkäaikainen työttömyys, vakava fyysinen sairaus, ylivelkaantuminen) viimeisen kahden vuoden aikana. Lisäksi tiedusteltiin mielipiteitä siitä, keitä yhteiskunnan pitäisi auttaa. Taustamuuttujina kyselyssä ovat muun muassa sukupuoli, ikä, tulot, talouden koko, korkein suoritettu koulutus sekä suuralue, maakunta, asuinkunnan tyyppi ja yli 67 000 asukkaan kunnat. This survey, conducted by the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat in 2015, charted Finnish views on poverty and social security. The survey was conducted as part of the "Two Finlands - growing inequality" project, which in turn was part of the "Is Finland Becoming Polarized?" programme funded by Kone Foundation. The survey included two open-ended questions, q8 "Describe a person who is poor in Finland; how do you recognise a poor person?" and q9 "What kind of standard of living should a poor person settle for in Finland; what kind of life should the person have a chance at?", which received a large number of responses (q8 N:5,718 and q9 N:5,726) and can be utilised in qualitative analysis. Open-ended responses are only available in Finnish. First, the respondents' perceptions of poverty and the reasons for poverty were charted with statements concerning, for example, whether they thought that people who are poor had bad luck, did not have the same chances in life as other people, or were lazy, and that the level of social security benefits was too low or that poverty was an inevitable part of contemporary development. The respondents' trust in other people and in authorities was examined next and several statements were presented on basic social assistance. The statements included, for instance, whether the respondents thought that most people who received social assistance really needed it or that many applied for social assistance on fraudulent grounds. The respondents were also asked whether they agreed or disagreed with several statements on social security in general (e.g. whether differences in living standards were too large in Finland, people should take more responsibility of themselves, and rich people were greedy). Next, the respondents were asked to place their own social standing on a scale from those who are worst off to those who are best off. Challenging situations in life were examined with questions on how closely the respondents had experienced various situations, such as long-term unemployment, over-indebtedness, serious mental health problems, or substance abuse problems, during the previous two years. Questions also focused on the respondents' opinions regarding the help provided by society to various groups of people (e.g. the long-term unemployed, disabled or homeless persons, or those who were victims of violent crimes or had been lonely for a long time). Background variables included, among others, the respondent's gender, age, income, household size, highest level of education, NUTS2 and NUTS3 regions of residence, and degree of urbanisation of municipality of residence
Stories of Being Unemployed 2018
Aineistosta on tehty jatkokäyttäjälle html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla kirjoituksia on helppo selata. The dataset consists of 165 texts on experiences of being unemployed in Finland. The texts are written in varying styles and lengths. Data collection was conducted in collaboration by the Finnish Literature Society and Lena Näre. The invitation to write directed the participants to write about their own experiences of unemployment or how they had experienced the unemployment of someone close to them. Main themes in many of the texts included the reasons behind unemployment, such as sickness, temporary layoffs, and job contract terminations. The texts described everyday life during unemployment and how becoming employed again had affected the participants' quality of life. Employment services were also discussed in the writings. The Finnish activation model for unemployment security was still in effect during data collection (repealed at the beginning of 2020), so the writers were able to discuss their experiences relating to the model. Background information included the participant's name or pseudonym, occupation, year of birth, area of residence and gender. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish
Childhood Friendships in 20th Century Finland 2018-2019
Aineistosta on tehty jatkokäyttäjälle html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla kirjoituksia on helppo selata. This dataset consists of 65 texts written on Finnish childhood memories of friendship from the 20th Century. Finnish Expatriates' National Identity and Political Participation 2014
Vastaajilta tiedusteltiin, miten he seuraavat politiikkaa ja kuuluvatko he johonkin järjestöön tai yhdistykseen. Lisäksi kartoitettiin ulkosuomalaisten äänestysaktiivisuuteen vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Vastaajilta kysyttiin esimerkiksi, onko heidän äänestysaktiivisuutensa Suomen valtiollisissa vaaleissa muuttunut ulkomaille muuton myötä, kuinka kaukana lähin äänestyspaikka on, mitä puoluetta omat näkemykset edustavat ja onko vastaaja äänestänyt viimeisen kymmenen vuoden aikana joko Suomen tai asuinmaansa vaaleissa. Lopuksi kysyttiin tärkeimpiä syitä äänestämättä jättämiselle. Taustamuuttujina aineistossa ovat sukupuoli, syntymävuosi, Suomen kansalaisuus, äidinkieli, koulutustaso, ammattiasema, siviilisääty, asuinpaikan seutu, asuinmaa ja kuinka kauan vastaaja on asunut ulkomailla. The study examined the national identity and political participation of Finns living abroad. The study received funding from the Unit for Democracy, Language Affairs and Fundamental Rights at the Ministry of Justice, the Migration Institute of Finland and the Finnish Club of Tampere. Questions surveying national identity examined, among others, how long the respondents had lived abroad, their reasons for moving abroad, languages spoken with different people, contacts and visits to Finland, importance of different places (e.g. place of birth, Finland, country of residence, Europe) and the most important characteristics in terms of their identity (e.g. occupation, citizenship, gender, religion, country of residence). Further questions charted the importance of various things when considering who is a Finn (e.g. being a citizen of Finland, having lived in Finland most of one's life, having Finnish heritage), feeling of Finnishness, feelings of national pride in different things (e.g. international political influence, achievements in sports), and things the respondents felt they had had to change or give up when moving abroad (language, cultural traditions, opinions or habits). Political participation was surveyed with questions about interest in politics, following politics in the media, forms of political participation engaged in (e.g. signing a petition, participating in a demonstration), participation in citizens' initiatives and membership and participation in associations and organisations. A number of questions about voting were asked, such as the most important things affecting the low voter turnout of Finnish expatriates, ways to increase voter turnout, the usefulness of introducing mail and internet voting and a separate constituency for expatriates, frequency of voting in Finnish elections, distance to the closest polling station, reasons for not voting, political party preference, and voting in the elections of the country of residence. Background variables included the respondent's gender, year of birth, marital status, Finnish citizenship, education, economic activity and occupational status as well as the Finnish citizenship of parents and type of the place of residence
Doctoral Graduates of Year 2015: Career and Employment Survey 2018
The survey charted the careers and employment situations of Finnish doctoral graduates three years after they had obtained their degree in 2015. Themes of the survey included impact of a doctoral degree on employment, usefulness of doctoral education in terms of skills needed in occupational life, and job satisfaction. The respondents were first asked what their occupational status was at the time of the survey and what it had been 6 months before starting the degree and 6 months after finishing it. Questions covered whether having a doctoral degree had led to an increased salary and better standing in occupational life, whether a doctoral degree had been a prerequisite for the respondents' current job, and what their gross monthly income was at present. The respondents were also asked if they had been unemployed after finishing their degree. Further questions covered how important certain skills and know-how were in the respondents' current job and how well their doctoral studies had developed these skills (e.g. theoretical or practical knowledge of their field, problem solving, managerial skills, negotiation skills, project management, and scientific communication). Opinions were charted on the significance of doctoral and other tertiary education, work experience, contacts and networks, and other skills in occupational life. The respondents were asked how they had financed their doctoral studies (e.g. by being employed by a university or other research institute or with a personal research grant). Finally, it was surveyed whether the respondents had completed their doctoral degree by studying full-time, part-time or during their leisure time while also otherwise employed. Background variables included the respondent's gender, field of study, and age at the time of graduation (dichotomised 35 or under/36 and over)
Physiological Responses to Dyadic Decision-Making Interaction 2019
The data were collected in a laboratory environment where the participants were divided into pairs and completed various tasks related to dyadic decision-making. The participants' physiological responses to the tasks were measured during the decision-making interaction. The data consist of the time stamps designating when decision-making took place during the interaction and electrodermal activity measured from the participants at these times. During the tasks, the pairs were instructed to come up with suitable adjectives to match the nouns given to them. A comparative design was used to conduct the study. In total, 30 pairs participated in the study: half of the pairs had one participant who had been diagnosed with depression (15 participants), while the other half did not (forming the control group). The data were collected as part of the 'Participation, joint decision making and social interaction deficits' (VOIS) project. The aim of the project was to utilise an experimental design to examine interaction phenomena connected to joint decision-making. The VOIS project also included other data collections, such as survey data, which are not archived at FSD. The research project was funded by the Academy of Finland and University of Helsinki. The data consist of two types of CSV files: data collected from pairs and from individual participants. The CSV files containing data from pairs include information on the interactional events that occurred during the tasks. The information consists of the type of the interactional event (adjective proposal, non-acceptance or acceptance), starting and ending times for the event, and speaker (which participant initiated the event). The files containing data from the individual participants include the time stamp for when a significant change (increase or decrease) in the participant's electrodermal activity (EDA) was triggered (skin conductance responses, SCR), and what the participant's electrodermal activity was at that time. The two types of CSV files can be examined together by using pair and participant IDs and the time stamps. Background variables included a pair ID and information on whether the participant had been diagnosed with depression. More information on the study and the CSV files is available in Finnish in the related materials of the dataset (bgF3485_fin.pdf)
Collaborative and Sharing Economy Phenomena in Finnish Households 2019
The survey charted Finnish experiences of sharing economy and the use of related services. Sharing economy refers to an activity where people give, sell, loan, borrow or rent things or services to each other instead of having to buy everything new or own it themselves. Respondents could respond to the survey in Finnish, Swedish or English. In addition to Statistics Finland, the study was funded by the Centre for Consumer Society Research, Consumers' Union of Finland, Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, City of Helsinki, and Finnish Tax Administration. The survey examined experiences of both more traditional and newer services related to sharing economy. Traditional services refer to, for example, flea markets, auctions, neighbourly help and car pooling. Newer services refer to several services organised through web platforms, such as short-term renting of a car or dwelling or borrowing money outside of traditional banks. Questions focused on, for instance, buying and selling used items and borrowing items from others. Additionally, the respondents were asked about helping others, buying surplus food, and the amount of cryptocurrency owned by the household. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age (categorised), level of education, household composition, type of neighbourhood of the respondent's municipality of residence, income, and the economic activity and occupational status of the respondent and their partner/spouse

Background variables for parliamentary candidates included name, party, electoral district and web page. Background variables for users of the voting advice application included party filter set by the user, electoral district, and time and date of responding
Social Distinctions in Modern Russia 1998
Vastaajaa pyydettiin kertomaan muun muassa puolisonsa työstä. Lisäksi oltiin kiinnostuneita vastaajan vapaa-ajan ja median käytöstä, tulotasosta, kulutuksesta ja vauraudesta. Vastaajaa pyydettiin esimerkiksi valitsemaan listasta erilaisia hyödykkeitä, joita hän omistaa. Taustamuuttujina ovat koulutus, työllisyyshistoria, ammatti, työpaikan toimiala, työaika, työantajasektori, siviilisääty, lasten lukumäärä, kotitalouden koko, tulot, kotitalouden kestotavarat, uskontokunta, kansallinen ryhmä, sukupuoli, paikkakuntatyyppi ja ikä.This study is part of a survey series that charts various issues characterising social differentiation in contemporary Russian society. The surveys in the series have been conducted in 1990, 1998, 2006 and 2015, facilitating research on temporal change. Social differentiation in this study was mainly considered in terms of occupation, social mobility, property and income, but attitudes, politics and religion were also examined. The study aimed to survey the respondents' conditions in life together with their values in order to examine the interaction between the two. Most questions in the survey concerned the respondents' working life. Questions focused on, for example, whether the respondents worked for the public or private sector, what kind of company they worked for, what kind of independency and responsibilities the respondents had in their work, whether the respondents were in a decision-making position at work, and what kind of equipment they used regularly in their work. Additionally, the respondents were asked whether they had been unemployed, laid off or part-time employed in the past 12 months and if yes, how they had managed economically at the time (e.g. whether they received benefits from the employer or state or support from family or friends). The survey also included questions on the respondents' family, media use, religiosity, owned property, and political activity. The most important sources of income for the respondents' family as well as the benefits they received from the state or from employers were examined. The newspapers and magazines the respondents read most frequently were charted, and the respondents were asked whether they owned various property and items, such as their own house or car, a washing machine, pager/mobile phone, and computer. The respondents' political activity was charted with questions on, for example, whether they had signed a petition or taken part in a strike in 1997 or 1998. Finally, the respondents' trust in various institutions (e.g. the President, Government, Russian army, and Russian orthodox church) and opinions on the significance of different conditions in providing advancement in society were surveyed. The respondents were asked to evaluate the importance of, for example, coming from a rich family, good education, hard work, contacts abroad, and luck both as it was ten years ago and at the time of the survey. Background variables included the sector in which the respondent worked in, the respondent's employment history, status in employment, working hours, industry of employment, education, marital status, number of children, household size, income, owned household durable goods, religious affiliation, nationality, gender, age, and type of municipality of residence
