Finnish University Graduates of Year 2012: Career and Employment Survey 2017
The survey charted the career and employment situations of people who had graduated from Finnish universities with a lower (BA/BSc or equivalent) or higher (MA/MSc or equivalent) degree in 2012. The survey was conducted five years after graduation. The first part investigated the respondents' education and work history. They were asked whether they had, after graduation, participated in job-related training, career guidance or any additional professional qualification or higher education studies. The respondents were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with a set of attitudinal statements regarding their degree and its usefulness for employment. Further questions covered how many employers the respondents had had, whether the respondents had been entrepreneurs, self-employed or freelancers, and whether they had been outside the labour market because of a family leave or unemployment. The respondents' satisfaction with their career thus far was charted, along with current occupational status, type of employer, and type of current work tasks. The respondents were also asked whether their current job required an academic degree, whether it was commensurate with their qualification, and if not, why they had accepted the job. It was also examined to what extent the respondents had been able to utilise knowledge and skills gained during their university studies. Monthly gross income at the time of the survey was charted. Next, the respondents were asked which factors had had an impact on their employment after graduation (e.g. major/minor subjects, internship, work experience, personal networks). Questions also covered how important certain skills and know-how were in the respondents' current job and how well their studies had developed these skills (e.g. theoretical or practical knowledge of their field, problem solving, managerial skills, negotiation skills, project management, and communication in English). Background variables included the respondent's gender, age at the time of graduation (categorised), monthly gross income (top-coded), NUTS3 region of residence, the university they attended, and information on the degree (field of study, number of credits required for the degree, degree level)
Vocational School Student Survey 2019
Seuraavaksi kartoitettiin koulutukseen hakeutumista. Vastaajilta kysyttiin muun muassa ammatillisen koulutuksen arvostuksesta perheen keskuudessa ja yläkouluaikaisten ystävien ja sisarusten nykyisestä opiskelutilanteesta. Vastaajat kertoivat, miksi olivat hakeutuneet nykyiselle koulutusalalleen. The Vocational School Student Survey (VET Student Survey) 2019 is a total study charting experiences of young people studying in Finnish vocational education institutions. The survey was conducted by the Research Foundation for Studies and Education (Otus) in collaboration with the National Union of Vocational Students in Finland (SAKKI), which also funded the study with funding received from the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. Main themes of the survey included applying for studies, experiences relating to studies and teaching, financial circumstances, plans for the future and working life, and wellbeing and leisure time. First, the respondents were asked about their studies at present with questions concerning, for instance, their field of education, how they financed their living costs during studies, and whether they were studying towards a dual or double degree. Questions also surveyed how the respondents had entered their studies (via the joint application system or continuous admission), whether their current field of education had been their first choice when applying, and whether they had began their studies straight away in the autumn after completing comprehensive school. The respondents' decision to apply for vocational studies was further examined with questions regarding, for instance, whether vocational studies had been discussed or recommended in their families or at school, whether their friends or siblings currently studied or had previously studied in a vocational institution, and how clear the decision to opt for vocational studies had been. The respondents were also asked whether they had worked or completed other studies before starting vocational studies, and how they had performed in earlier education. The respondents' experiences of studies and teaching were examined with questions about the time spent on studies in a week, form and sufficiency of the teaching and guidance received, balancing and managing studies, and the atmosphere of their school and study community. Further questions focused on the respondents' opinions on the personalisation of studies and competence-based studying, including, for instance, whether they thought they were able to influence what and how they studied and whether their career plans had been taken into account in their study plan. Opinions were also charted regarding on-the-job learning. Possible learning difficulties and support received for these difficulties were surveyed next. With regard to study progress, satisfaction with studies and the institution itself was charted as well as feelings of studying the right field, prospects of graduating, things slowing down study progress, and views on the importance of vocational studies. Working, housing and financial circumstances were investigated by asking about working during studies and in the summer, housing during the semesters, financial help from parents and relatives, and sufficiency of money for expenses. Concerning occupational life, opinions were probed on a number of statements about employment as well as employment prospects after graduation, and views on the importance of various things for a successful career. Future plans to study were surveyed. Well-being and leisure time were examined with questions about friends, social relationships, bullying and discrimination, sleep, hobbies, and Internet and social media use. Finally, the respondents' values and attitudes were examined with a set of statements including, for example, whether they thought income differences should be reduced, environmental protection should be the first priority, and Finland's EU membership was a good thing. Background variables included the respondent's year of birth, gender, and mother tongue. The time the respondent had lived in Finland was further charted, along with languages spoken with parents, and parents' employment status and education level
Ninth-Graders' Connection with Nature 2019
Aineisto on osa tutkimusta, jossa kartoitettiin yhdeksäsluokkalaisten luontosuhdetta luontosuhdekyselyn ja onnellisuuskertomusten avulla. Jokaiselle vastaajalle on aineistossa henkilökohtainen koodi, jonka avulla kyselyn vastaajat on yhdistettävissä Tietoarkistoon arkistoidun kvalitatiivisen FSD3403 Yhdeksäsluokkalaisten kirjoituksia onnellisuudesta 2019 -aineiston onnellisuuskertomusten kirjoittajiin. This survey charted Finnish ninth-graders' connectedness to nature. The data for this dataset were collected as part of research that charts ninth-graders' connection with nature through a questionnaire (the Nature Relatedness Scale) and writings on happiness. The responses in this quantitative dataset can be connected to the qualitative dataset FSD3403 Ninth-Graders' Views on Happiness 2019, which is also archived at FSD. The responses can be connected to the texts in the qualitative dataset with a unique personal code number that was given to each respondent. The qualitative dataset containing the written texts is only available in Finnish. The ninth-graders' connection to nature was measured with the Finnish translation of the 21-item Nature Relatedness Scale. A Nature Relatedness Score, indicative of the strength of the respondent's connection to nature, can be calculated based on the responses to the scale. The dataset includes the respondents' Nature Relatedness Scores, calculated by the researcher, as well as both the original and reversed numerical scoring scale for the reverse scored items (2, 3, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 18) in different variables (e.g. original numerical scoring scale in variable q2: 1 = strongly disagree and 5 = strongly agree, reversed numerical scoring scale in variable k_q2: 1 = strongly agree and 5 = strongly disagree). The survey examined the ninth-graders' personal relationship with nature with questions on, for example, whether they enjoyed being outdoors even in unpleasant weather, thought that their connection to nature and the environment was part of their spirituality, and thought their relationship with nature was an important part of who they were. Environmental concern was surveyed with questions relating to, for example, whether the respondents thought that humans have the right to use natural resources in any way they want, always thought about how their actions affect the environment, and thought that conservation is unnecessary because nature is strong enough to recover from any human impact. Furthermore, the respondents' affiliation with animals was charted with questions focusing on, for example, whether they thought that some species are just meant to die out or become extinct, took notice of wildlife wherever they were, and thought a lot about the suffering of animals. Additionally, the survey included a question on how satisfied the ninth-graders were in their life in general on a scale from 4 to 10 (in school grades). The data do not contain any background variables
Attractiveness of Teacher Education: Surveys 2020
Tämän kvantitatiivisen aineiston lisäksi hankkeessa kerättiin Tietoarkistoon arkistoitu kvalitatiivinen kyselyaineisto FSD3458 Opettajankoulutuksen vetovoima: fokusryhmähaastattelut 2020.The survey studied the image and pulling power of teacher education programmes and teaching profession in Finland as perceived by upper secondary school students, students in teacher education, teacher educators and guidance counsellors working in upper secondary schools. Most questions were asked from all the four respondent groups. The data are part of a research project on the attractiveness of programmes leading to a teaching degree, conducted by the Finnish Institute for Educational Research at the University of Jyväskylä and funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Upper secondary students were asked about their studies and future study plans. Students in teacher education were asked about their experiences of the study programme and intentions to work as a teacher in the future. Teacher educators were asked about their work experience. Images of teacher training and education were charted with questions relating to, for instance, quality of the study programme. Views were probed on whether certain issues increased or decreased the pulling power of teacher education programmes, for instance, the employment situation of teachers and the tough competition to get a place in such a programme. Images of teaching profession and the educational environment in Finnish schools were studied with statements and questions covering views on teachers' working conditions, pay, leave entitlement, career opportunities, autonomy at work, digital transformation, teacher impact on society, and relations with students and parents. The respondents were asked to what extent they followed different types of media and whether the media had a negative or positive impact on their image of the attractiveness of teaching and education profession. Background variables included the respondent's group, gender, age group, mother tongue, type of municipality, whether there was a university providing teacher education programmes in the municipality, and the year when commenced studies. FSD holdings also contain another dataset related to the same research project: FSD3458 Attractiveness of Teacher Education: Focus Group Interviews 2020
Finnish Experiences and Memories of Interrail 2018
PROMEQ: Health and Well-being of Vulnerable Groups in Society 2016-2018: Combined Data
Aineistoon on koottu eri ryhmille samanlaisina esitetyt kysymykset. Kysymyksiä on poimittu mm. This dataset consists of the combined responses from all respondent groups to the baseline and follow-up surveys collected in Finland as part of the Inclusive Promotion of Health and Wellbeing (PROMEQ 2016-2019) research project, which studied population groups that need special support. Themes of the surveys included social participation, mental and physical well-being, use of social and health services, and satisfaction with life. The respondent groups included young people not in employment or education, the long-term unemployed, immigrants, and people aged over 65. The study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design, meaning that some respondents participated in various interventions while others did not. The combined data include those questions that were consistently repeated for all respondent groups. More extensive data collected from each respondent group are also available at FSD (datasets FSD3432-FSD3435). The aim of the PROMEQ project was to develop and demonstrate novel models of promotion of health and wellbeing. The surveys included many scales and questions used in other studies. Questions were selected, for instance, from the Finnish Youth Surveys, as well as the Regional Health and Well-being Study (ATH) and Welfare and Services in Finland (HYPA) surveys conducted by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). Most questions included in the baseline surveys were repeated in the follow-up surveys. First, the surveys charted the respondents' living conditions, income, loans and need for financial aid or food assistance. The respondents' health, well-being and quality of life were examined, and satisfaction with different spheres of life was also surveyed. Social relationships and trust were examined next. The respondents were asked about feelings of loneliness and belonging, their social life, social participation, and trust in other people and various institutions. Additionally, experiences of discrimination based on several factors were charted, and the respondents' opinions on their own opportunities in life were surveyed. Finally, the respondents' use of social and health services in the past 12 months (3 or 6 months in the follow-up surveys) was examined. Questions also focused on the respondents' satisfaction with the availability of various social and public services and their participation in group activities promoting health and well-being (e.g. weight management groups, AA, NA). The respondents' lifestyle was examined with questions on their exercise, eating and drinking habits. Background variables included, among others, the respondent's gender, year of birth, marital status, highest level of education, household composition, and economic activity and occupational status. Additionally, the background information included whether the respondent belonged to the test or control group
Social Research Students' Views on Forming Political Opinions 2020
Aineisto koostuu Tampereen yliopiston yhteiskuntatutkimuksen opiskelijoiden kirjoituksista liittyen heidän oman poliittisen mielipiteensä muodostumiseen ja äänestyskäyttäytymiseen. Aineisto on kerätty alun perin opinnäytetyöhön. Aineistosta on tehty jatkokäyttäjälle html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla kirjoituksia on helppo selata. This dataset consists of 12 texts written by social research students at Tampere University on their voting behaviour and the formation of their political opinions. The data were originally collected for a Bachelor's thesis. In the writing guidelines, the respondents were presented with questions to help guide their writing. The questions prompted the students to describe, for instance, the political topics they usually discussed with their fellow students and the kind of effect these conversations had had on their political opinions and voting behaviour. Additionally, the students were asked to describe how strong their own political party preference had been before starting their studies and whether their studies had affected their preference. The guidelines also instructed the students to write about the influence of their childhood home environment on their political ideology and behaviour. Background information included the respondent's gender, age group and voting behaviour during the previous parliamentary elections. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish
Child Barometer 2020
Aineisto on kerätty koronapandemian aikana. The study surveyed Finnish six-year-olds' well-being and ideas of good life. The data were collected during the coronavirus pandemic. The respondents were asked whether they liked going to preschool, whether they liked being at home, whether adults spent enough time with them, how often they received praise and whether they sometimes felt afraid. The open-ended questions (only available in Finnish) charted why the respondents liked or didn't like preschool and home, what they received praise for, what they were afraid of, what they thought was a good place for a child to live in, what made them happy, what they would have wished for from a fairy godmother and what a child needed to feel good and comfortable. Background variables included the respondent's gender, region and major region of residence as well as the number of parents/guardians and children in the household, parents' education level and financial situation of the household
Citizens' Pulse 7/2021
Main themes in the surveys include the activity and communication of authorities, compliance with regulations, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. The seventh collection round of 2021 surveyed the respondents' satisfaction with the way democracy works in Finland and trust in other people and in various institutions, such as the Finnish Government, the health care system, and the media. The respondents were asked to evaluate how well Finnish authorities (including the Government, Ministries, and other authorities such as the police and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare) had been prepared for disease outbreaks such as the coronavirus epidemic. The respondents' state of mind was examined with questions on various matters relating to health and well-being. The questions covered, for example, whether the respondents were worried about the risk of them or people close to them falling ill with COVID-19, the availability of health care for them and people close to them for issues unrelated to COVID-19, and their own mental well-being. Additionally, the respondents' concerns were charted with questions regarding livelihood and everyday life (e.g. whether they were worried about the adequacy of their income or the income of people close to them, the uncertainty regarding how long the exceptional circumstances would last, and their children's schooling). Next, the respondents' confidence in their future and experiences of stress were surveyed. The respondents were asked to evaluate whether an atmosphere of crisis prevailed amongst Finns. The availability and findability of relevant information on the coronavirus crisis was charted. Compliance with coronavirus restrictions was examined by asking the respondents whether they had observed the restrictions and recommendations set by authorities for preventing transmission of the virus, including maintaining safe distances, washing hands regularly, wearing a face mask, avoiding touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands, using a hand sanitiser when it was available in public places, and minimising contacts with people outside immediate family and friends. The respondents' views on the coronavirus vaccine were also surveyed, including whether they would be willing to get a COVID-19 vaccine for themselves or for their children. Finally, some questions on the upcoming municipal elections (June 2021) were presented. The respondents were asked whether they were going to vote in the elections and if yes, whether they would vote during the advance voting period or on election day. Additionally, the respondents were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with statements regarding safe voting during COVID-19 and the postponement of the elections from April to June. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, NUTS3 region of residence, highest level of education, household composition, and perceived financial situation of household
Citizens' Pulse 2/2021
The Citizens' Pulse surveys examine Finnish attitudes and opinions in the context of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).
