Playing Video Games during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Survey 2020
The survey charted different digital gaming cultures. Questions examined digital gaming and related phenomena, such as livestreaming games and following e-sports and sports, during the coronavirus pandemic in Finland and China. First, the respondents were asked how often they had played digital and non-digital games in the past year and which games they had played the most. The types of digital games the respondents played (e.g. action and role-playing, sports games) were also surveyed. Following e-sports was examined with questions on, for example, how often the respondents watched online esports matches or livestreams of professional gamers, followed esports news sites or discussions, or bought esports merchandise. The respondents were also asked whether they played esports on a competitive level. Some questions also examined the respondents' habits regarding following and watching traditional sports. Next, the respondents' content producing was charted regarding whether the respondents had livestreamed their gaming. Finally, the survey examined the effects of the restrictions and exceptional circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The respondents were asked how the restrictions of movement and gathering had affected their life regarding gaming, following and watching esports and gaming livestreams, and following and watching traditional sports, as well as their own physical exercise, reading habits, and TV watching. Background variables included the respondent's age, gender and mother tongue (Finnish or Chinese)
Interviews on Nonreligion with Young Adults in the Capital Region 2018
Aineistosta on tehty jatkokäyttäjälle html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla kirjoituksia on helppo selata. The dataset consists of interviews with young adults born in the 1980s or 1990s who live in the Finnish capital region and identify themselves as nonreligious. During the interview, the interviewees were asked to fill out the Gallup Ecclesiastica 2015 survey collected by the Church Research Institute and comment on the questions out loud. The interviewer also presented the participants with additional questions on the themes of the interview. The questions in the Gallup Ecclesiastica survey covered topics such as church affiliation, resigning from the church, attending church services, religious practice, and attitudes towards religion in general. The Gallup Ecclesiastica also contained questions on how the interviewees would feel if a meeting space for a religious community was located in their own neighbourhood, as well as their attitudes towards religion lessons at school and expressing religious identity through clothing. Additionally, the interviewees were asked to describe what role religion had played in their childhood homes. Background information included the date on which the interview was held, the interviewee's gender, occupation, age, and the pseudonym assigned to the interviewee. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is available only in Finnish
Under 40-year-old Parents' Perceptions of Parenthood 2020
Aineisto koostuu alle 40-vuotiaiden vanhempien kirjoituksista liittyen omaan vanhemmuuteensa. Arkistoinnin yhteydessä taustatiedoista tuotettiin erillinen html-hakemisto, jonka avulla aineistoa on helppo selata. The dataset consists of texts written by parents aged under 40 on their experiences of parenthood. Experiences of Social and Health Services in Finland during COVID-19 Pandemic 2020
Arkistoinnin yhteydessä taustatiedoista tuotettiin erillinen html-hakemisto, jonka avulla aineistoa on helppo selata. The dataset consists of texts on experiences of visiting social and health services in Finland during the COVID-19 pandemic. The writers were people aged over 18 residing in Finland who had visited social and/or health services during the coronavirus pandemic. The writing guidelines directed the writers to describe how the COVID-19 pandemic had affected their life, what had prompted them to contact social or health services during the pandemic, and how the coronavirus situation at the time had affected their experience of visiting social or health services. The writers were also asked how they would improve the functionality of social and health services in exceptional circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Background information included the participant's gender, age group, and household composition, and the reason why they had visited social or health services during the pandemic. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish
Role of Science in Finnish Worldviews and Everyday Thinking 2019-2020
Tutkimuksen on rahoittanut Suomen Kulttuurirahasto. Lopuksi vastaajia pyydettiin täyttämään kirjoittajien suomeen kääntämä tiedeuskon mittari (ks. lisää mittarista Farias, M., Newheiser, A.-K., Kahane, G., & de Toledo, Z. (2013). Scientific faith: Belief in science increases in the face of stress and existential anxiety. Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 49(6), 1210 - 1213. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jesp.2013.05.00). The survey studied the role of science in Finnish worldviews and everyday thinking. Main themes of the survey included how those who value science approach fundamental questions about the nature of the universe and human existence and how science informs their worldviews. The study was funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation. First, the respondents' beliefs were charted with questions on the origins of human consciousness, evolution, the origin of the universe, and the reason for the existence of suffering. Scientific views were measured with several statements, for example, whether the respondents felt that science helped them to understand the world, whether science gave their lives meaning, and whether science informed their moral values. The respondents were also asked how science influenced their views on death and immortality, and whether they felt that science connected them to the rest of humanity and the universe. The respondents' worldviews were explored with questions on, for example, the fairness of the world, destiny, and life after death. The respondents were also asked to respond to statements about nature in relation to topics such as the formation of the Earth, the origin of living beings, natural selection, and the forces affecting the world. Finally, the respondents responded to a measure that measured scientific belief which the researchers had translated into Finnish (for more information on the measure, see Farias, M., Newheiser, A.-K., Kahane, G., & de Toledo, Z. 2013. Scientific faith: Belief in science increases in the face of stress and existential anxiety. Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 49 (6), 1210 - 1213. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jesp.2013.05.008). The measure consisted of statements such as science provides us with a better understanding of the universe than does religion, we can only rationally believe in what is scientifically provable, and the scientific method is the only reliable path to knowledge. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, years of full-time education, spirituality, religious affiliation, belief in God, religious beliefs, possible previous or current work experience at a research institute, and the field of research worked in
Citizens' Pulse 12/2021
The Citizens' Pulse surveys examine Finnish attitudes and opinions in the context of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Main themes in the surveys include the activity and communication of authorities, compliance with regulations, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. The 12th collection round of 2021 surveyed the respondents' opinions on the reliability of the information provided by various Finnish authorities (e.g. the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare) and members of various groups (e.g. health care employees, researchers) on the coronavirus crisis. The respondents were asked to evaluate how fair or unfair they thought Finnish society was at present and how well Finnish authorities (including the Government, Ministries, and other authorities such as the police and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare) had been prepared for epidemics such as COVID-19. The respondents' state of mind was examined with questions on various matters relating to health and well-being. The questions covered, for example, whether the respondents were worried about their own risk or the risk of people close to them contracting COVID-19, the availability of health care for them and people close to them for issues unrelated to COVID-19, and their own mental well-being. Additionally, the respondents' concerns were charted with questions regarding livelihood and everyday life (e.g. whether they were worried about the adequacy of their income or the income of people close to them, the uncertainty regarding how long the exceptional circumstances would last, and their children's schooling). Next, the respondents' confidence in their future and experiences of stress were surveyed. The respondents were asked to evaluate whether an atmosphere of crisis prevailed amongst Finns. The availability and findability of relevant information on the coronavirus crisis was charted. Compliance with coronavirus restrictions was examined by asking the respondents whether they had followed the restrictions and recommendations set by authorities for preventing transmission of the virus, including maintaining safe distances, washing hands regularly, wearing a face mask, avoiding touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands, using a hand sanitiser when it was available in public places, and minimising contacts with people outside immediate family and friends. Finally, the respondents' views on the coronavirus vaccine were surveyed. The respondents were asked whether they had gotten vaccinated against COVID-19 and what had influenced their decision to get or to not get vaccinated. Additionally, the respondents were asked whether various COVID-19-related issues had influenced their use of services (e.g. shopping, going to concerts, eating at restaurants). Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, NUTS3 region of residence, highest level of education, household composition, and perceived financial situation of household
Social Workers' Experiences of Political Positions of Trust 2020
Arkistoinnin yhteydessä taustatiedoista tuotettiin erillinen html-hakemisto, jonka avulla aineistoa on helppo selata. The dataset consists of texts written by social workers in political positions of trust on their experiences of combining their expertise in social work with politics and local decision-making. EVA Survey on Finnish Values and Attitudes Autumn 2020
The study charted Finnish people's values and attitudes. The themes of the Autumn 2020 survey included the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, financing the welfare state, happiness, equality, birth rate, and social problems. First, the respondents were presented with a variety of attitudinal statements concerning, among other topics, the Government's actions to combat COVID-19, politics, employment, reliability of information, and alcohol use. Next, the survey examined the respondents' attitudes towards rebalancing public finance after the COVID-19 pandemic. Opinions on financing the welfare state were also charted with various questions. For instance, it has been said that financing the welfare state requires that Finns must work more/longer in the future than they do at present, one way or other. Relating to this statement, the respondents were asked to evaluate whether several ways of achieving the goal of making Finns work more/longer were good or bad (e.g. increasing the number of weekly working hours or making it more difficult to take early retirement or get disability pension). Everyday well-being and happiness were also surveyed. The respondents were asked how happy they were at present and how satisfied they were with various matters, such as their income level, relationship status, and opportunities to influence in society. Questions also focused on what the respondents thought contributed to a happy life, for instance whether they thought that good relationships, health, social respect, interesting hobbies, or spirituality were prerequisites for happiness. Several questions charted views on equality and inequality among Finns (e.g. the presence of gender, generational, regional and occupational equality/inequality in Finland). Views on the reasons behind the low birth rate in Finland were examined next (e.g. whether the respondents thought unemployment or general uncertainty contributed to the low birth rate). The respondents were also asked which policy means they thought might be effective in increasing the birth rate. Social problems were examined with questions on whether the respondents had personally experienced or otherwise closely witnessed problems such as anxiety or depression, bullying, substance addiction, problem use of alcohol, or gambling problems, during the past few years. Finally, the respondents' views were surveyed regarding the impact of Donald Trump and his administration on, for instance, the global status of and respect for the United States. Opinions on Finland's EU membership and the euro as Finland's currency were also examined. Background variables included gender, age group, size of the respondent's municipality of residence, region of residence, employer type, employment status, type of employment contract, occupational group, employment sector, trade union membership, political party preference (which party the respondent would vote for), self-perceived social class, and annual income of the respondent's household
Multicultural Young Adults' Views on Multiculturalism in Finland 2020
Aineisto koostuu monikulttuuristen nuorten aikuisten kirjoituksista liittyen heidän monikulttuurisuuden kokemuksiinsa Suomessa. Kirjoituskutsulla pyrittiin tavoittamaan alle 35-vuotiaita henkilöitä, joiden vanhemmat ovat eri kulttuureista. Kirjoituskutsussa vastaajia pyydettiin kirjoittamaan monikulttuurisesta arjestaan Suomessa vapaamuotoisesti ja käyttäen konkreettisia esimerkkejä. Vastaajille annettiin kirjoituskutsussa useita kirjoittamista ohjaavia apukysymyksiä. Arkistoinnin yhteydessä taustatiedoista tuotettiin erillinen html-hakemisto, jonka avulla aineistoa on helppo selata. This dataset consists of texts written by multicultural young adults on their perceptions and experiences of cultural pluralism in Finland.
