Festival Barometer 2014-2018
Seuraavaksi kysyttiin, mikä saisi osallistumaan festivaaleille useammin. The festival barometer aims to collect information on Finnish festival visitors and the changes that occur in their taste in music and festivals over the years. This dataset consists of the responses to the 2018 survey (5,801) as well as the responses from each collection round (2014/2016 and 2018) for those participants who had responded to more than one survey (715). In 2014, the TATU2 project by the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences and the JOHDE II project by the Turku School of Economics and the University of the Arts Helsinki were involved in conducting the barometer. In 2016 and 2018, the barometer was conducted together with the Seinäjoki Unit of the Sibelius Academy (a unit of the University of the Arts Helsinki). First, the respondents were asked which Finnish festivals they had visited during the past few years and how interesting they thought various Finnish festivals were. Opinions on the general quality of various aspects of the biggest Finnish festivals, such as the performers, food and drink services, security, and marketing, were charted. Next, the respondents were asked what would get them to attend festivals more often (e.g. if the performers were more interesting, tickets were cheaper, travelling to the festival was easier, cheaper or faster, or more information was available on the festivals). Some questions focused on the significance of several aspects for achieving a successful festival experience, for example, positive surprises in performances, diverse food and drink services, clean bathrooms, and the values represented by the festival. The respondents' opinions on how much festival products and services should cost were surveyed next. The products and services surveyed included, for instance, a three-day admission ticket to a festival with domestic performers, a quality portion of food served in the festival area, and a glass of beer or cider served in the festival area. The respondents were also asked how likely it was that they would visit a festival in the next year, five years, or ten years. The respondents' taste in music (e.g. how interesting they found pop, rock, punk or jazz music) as well as their relationship with music (e.g. whether music was one of the most important things in their life and whether they actively recommended artists, songs or albums to their friends) were examined. Finally, the respondents were asked how important several values were for them personally (e.g. power, pleasure, benevolence and tradition). This dataset can be connected to dataset FSD3324 Festival Barometer 2014-2016 by using the fsd_id variable. Background variables included the respondent's year of birth, gender, municipality of residence (categorised into largest cities or NUTS3 regions), highest level of education, occupational status, subjective social class and gross annual income
Child-up: Survey for Children and Young People 2019
Aineistossa on kartoitettu koululaisten kokemuksia kielitaidosta, koulussa pärjäämisestä ja vuorovaikutuksesta eri kielillä. Aineisto on kerätty osana Child-up-hanketta, jonka tavoitteena on lisätä ymmärrystä maahanmuuttajataustaisten lasten, nuorten ja heidän huoltajiensa kokemuksista oppilaitoksissa, varhaiskasvatuksessa ja kasvatusyhteisöissä sekä heidän kanssaan työskentelevien ammattilaisten toiminnasta. Aineistoa on kerätty Suomessa, Belgiassa, Saksassa, Ruotsissa, Italiassa, Puolassa ja Iso-Britanniassa. Hankkeen on rahoittanut Euroopan Unionin Horisontti 2020 tutkimus- ja innovaatio-ohjelma. Aluksi lapsilta kysyttiin, mitä kieliä he käyttävät kotona, luokassa, koulun välitunneilla ja ystävien kanssa. Lapsia pyydettiin arvioimaan omaa paikallisen kielen taitoaan. Seuraavaksi lapset kertoivat, kuinka hyvin he ymmärtävät opettajan ohjeita, pystyvätkö he kertomaan omista mielipiteistään avoimesti ja tekevätkö he yhteistyötä luokkatovereidensa kanssa. Edelleen kysyttiin, ovatko lapset kohdanneet erilaisia vaikeita tilanteita, kuten muutto uuteen maahan, uuteen kouluun siirtyminen tai oliko heillä ollut hankaluuksia ilmaista omia mielipiteitään. Jos lapset olivat kohdanneet vaikeuksia, he kertoivat, keneltä he mahdollisesti olivat saaneet tukea tilanteeseen. The survey charted the experiences of children and young people regarding language skills, multilingual communication, and success at school. The data were collected as part of the Child-up research project, which aims to enhance understanding on the experiences of migrant children, young people, and their guardians regarding school, pre-school, and educational communities, as well as the experiences of the professionals working with them. The data were collected in Finland, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Poland, and Great Britain. The research project was funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation funding programme. First, the respondents were asked which languages they used at home, in class, during break time, and with friends, as well as how they would evaluate their skills in the local language. If the respondents' native language was not the local language, they were asked whether they got help or could use translation in their native language during class. The respondents' views on various statements, such as whether they liked going to school, could understand everything their teacher told them, and thought school tasks were easy, were surveyed. The respondents were also asked, for example, whether they listened to their teacher, collaborated with their classmates, and could speak freely about their views on different things. Next, challenging situations the respondents had encountered in school were examined. The respondents were asked whether they had experienced new and unfamiliar situations or surroundings or any kind of trouble at school, as well as how they had managed to overcome such situations (e.g. by getting help from their family or teacher, or by talking to school staff or a friend). Finally, the respondents were asked about their social relationships at school. Questions included, for example, whether the respondents felt close to their classmates, had friends in their class, felt closer to those who spoke their language, and got along with their teachers. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age, ISCED level of their school, country of birth, parents' country of birth, mother tongue, immigrant background, and the type of the family's accommodation

Vastaajilta kysyttiin lisäksi heille mahdollisesti huolta aiheuttavista tekijöistä, erilaisiin uhkiin varautumisesta, Suomen onnistumisesta koronaviruksen torjunnassa, luottamuksesta Puolustusvoimien kykyyn torjua sotilaallisia uhkia, suhtautumisesta Euroopan unionin ja Naton väliseen yhteistyöhön, Suomen kutsuntajärjestelmän uudistamisesta sekä kansalaispalveluksesta. Taustamuuttujina olivat muiden muassa sukupuoli, ikä, työelämään osallistuminen, ammatti/asema, koulutus, elämäntilanne, kotona asuvien lasten iät ja lukumäärä, perheen tuloluokka, ruokakunnan koko, asunnon tyyppi, aluemuuttujia sekä puoluekanta. The annual Finnish Opinions on Security Policy National Defence survey charted Finnish public opinion on foreign policy, defence policy, security, military alliances, military service, and international armed conflicts at the time of the survey. Some questions examined views on factors affecting safety and security. Opinions were charted on the success of foreign policy in the previous few years, funds allocated to the Defence Forces, whether Finland should resort to armed defence in case of any sort of attack, whether the respondents would be prepared to participate in national defence according to their abilities, and how the global security situation would develop in the next five years. Views were probed on the current, conscription-based defence system and whether women should also participate in conscription. The respondents were asked whether Finland should form military alliances and whether Finland should apply for NATO membership. Next, the respondents were asked how different issues affected the safety and security of Finland. These included, among others, Finland's EU membership, potential NATO membership, participation in the EU defence and in international crisis management, and military non-alignment. Satisfaction with defence policy in the previous few years was investigated. Views were charted on Finnish military cooperation in the EU, with NATO, other Nordic countries, and the United States. The respondents were asked to evaluate the impact of several countries and organisations, such as Russia, China, US, UN, NATO and EU, on Finland's security. Views on how the military situation in nearby regions would develop during the next decade were also examined. Concerns caused by certain phenomena and issues were charted, such as withdrawals from arms controls agreements, climate change, various infectious diseases and epidemics, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, organised crime, international terrorism, fake news, cyberthreats, political extremism, racism, employment, and current developments in the EU, Belarus, Russia, US, Middle East and Ukraine. The respondents were asked to evaluate Finland's preparedness for the prevention of various security threats, such as armed attack, energy supply issues, infectious diseases and epidemics, environmental hazards, political pressure from other states, economic crisis, terrorism, and attacks against information systems and networks. The respondents were asked whether their trust in the future of the European Union had weakened, strengthened or stayed the same. Views on co-operation between EU and NATO to increase security in Europe, and Finland's success in controlling the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic were also investigated. The respondents were asked whether they trusted the ability of the Finnish Defence Forces to defend Finland against military threats, and whether they were worried about the security threats and exploitation opportunities provided by digitalisation and technological advances. Background variables included, among others, the respondent's gender, age, economic activity and occupational status, economic activity and occupational status of the household head, household composition, ages of children living at home (categorised), gross annual income of the household, level of education, type of accommodation, region of residence, number of inhabitants in the municipality of residence, political party choice in the previous parliamentary elections, and political party choice if the parliamentary elections were held at the time of the survey
Aalto University Student Union Member Survey 2020
The Aalto University Student Union Member Survey examined the student union members' experiences and opinions regarding the usefulness and quality of the services provided by Aalto University Student Union (AYY) and AYY's communication channels. Main themes of the survey included housing, AAY's communication channels and services, and participation in student affairs and activities. The research was carried out by the Research Foundation for Studies and Education (Otus) and funded by AAY. First, the respondents were asked to provide information about their studies at Aalto University and their current housing situation, and to evaluate their satisfaction with the quality of their current housing. They were also asked about the length of their commute and how burdensome they found it. Views on shared housing were examined with questions on whether the respondents had ever lived in a shared student apartment or shared housing, which factors had influenced their decision to live or to not live in shared housing, and what their attitudes towards shared housing were. The importance of facilities (e.g. club rooms, sports facilities), residential activities, events and common spaces in the vicinity of the respondents' home and in their residential area were investigated. Views on how location contributed to the quality of housing and the factors based on which the respondents made study-related housing choices were also charted. Next topic was the use of AAY's communication channels. The respondents were asked about the frequency with which they used AAY's communication channels (e.g. AAY's website, mailing lists, weekly newsletters, Facebook, Instagram), which channels they primarily used to look for information about student union activities, and through which channels they would like to receive information on student union services. Further questions focused on general use of social media channels, which of these channels they would like to use to keep in touch with AAY, and the kind of information and content they would be interested in receiving from the student union. Experiences and opinions regarding services provided AAY were also examined. The respondents were asked which services provided (e.g. rental housing, legal protection counselling, rental recreational facilities, events) they had used in the past six months and how useful they found the student union services. Opinions on the usefulness of several potential services, the opening hours of the Otaniemi Services Office, and the respondents' satisfaction with their latest service point visit were investigated. Additionally, the respondents were asked about their membership and participation in associations within the student union, what kind of student events they attended or would like to attend, their participation in events organised by AAY, and their opinions on AAY's or the Aalto community's student events. The next set of questions focused on the problems the respondents had faced in their daily life as students, for instance, in matters related to their finances, housing, teaching or facilities at the university. Finally, the respondents were asked to identify the ways in which they thought they could influence student affairs and activities, whether they were interested in acting as student representatives in university administration, and whether they had voted in Representative Council elections. Background variables included variables related to the respondent's housing situation, student status, educational progression, mother tongue, gender, age group, and identification with a minority group
Free-time Residence Barometer 2021
Vapaa-ajan asunnon omistajat ottivat kantaa siihen, miten esimerkiksi polttoaineen hinnan nousu vaikuttaa tulevaisuudessa mökkimatkojen määrään. The survey studied developments in the use of free-time residences and holidays homes in Finland. Spending time at a free-time residence (mökki) is a widespread phenomenon in Finland with deep historical and cultural roots, forming a significant part of domestic tourism. In this survey, the term "free-time residence" refers to rural recreational residences (holiday homes, cottages) mainly used during weekends and holidays, especially during summertime. The 2021 survey was commissioned by the Island Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and funded by the Natural Resources Institute Finland. The use of the free-time residence was charted by asking the respondents, for example, about the distance between their free-time residence and permanent residence in kilometres and hours, the location of their free-time residence, and its suitability for year-round habitation. They were also asked to indicate the number of days their holiday home had been used each month in the previous 12 months as well as the number of people who had spent at least one night there. Willingness to rent out the residence to other people was also queried. The respondents were asked whether their use of the residence had increased or decreased in the previous three years, and to estimate whether it would increase or decrease in the following three years. In addition, they were asked whether a household member had commuted to work from or worked remotely from the second home, and whether the respondents themselves teleworked or would be willing to telework there. Opinions on the impact of rising fuel prices on time spent at the free-time residence were also charted. Questions related to the standard of the free-time residence covered the total floorage, access to electricity, heating, and available amenities at the free-time residence. Views were also probed on the accommodation capacity, improvements made in the last 12 months, and future improvements. In addition, the respondents were asked to rate the overall state of the main building. Water supply and waste disposal was investigated with questions about sources of water for drinking, cooking and washing, wastewater management, type of outhouse, and waste management. Service provision at the free-time residence was charted by asking the distance to the nearest services (e.g. grocery store, health centre, library, post office, bus stop). Satisfaction with various services available in the proximity of the free-time residence was canvassed as well as willingness to buy various services. In addition, the respondents were asked whether they usually bought groceries and other goods and services from a store/company located in their municipality of residence, along the way, or in the municipality where the free-time residence was located. The use of money was surveyed with questions on the average amount of money used per each day spent at the free-time residence, and the amount of money spent on building or repairing the residence, purchasing goods, and using services close to the residence in the previous 12 months. In addition, the annual amount of various fees and user charges related to the residence (e.g. real property tax, private road fees, harbour and quay dues, and waste collection, electricity, waste water, and telephone charges) was queried. Respondents were asked about their participation in different community activities (e.g. local community events, municipal politics, associations) in the municipality of their free-time residence. Opinions on introducing a law that would allow free-time residence owners to have the same access to services and the same voting and eligibility rights as permanent residents in the municipality of their free-time residence were surveyed. Attitudes towards easing the building code that regulates the construction of free-time residences were also examined. Background variables included the respondent's municipality of free-time residence, municipality of permanent residence, economic activity, household size, household characteristics, and household monthly gross income
Argument Quality Evaluation Study 2018
Aineisto on koottu osana Suomen Akatemian hankkeita Polut poliittiseen luottamukseen (Consortium of Trust Research: Pathways to Political Trust, CONTRE, 2015-2019) ja Osallistuminen pitkäjänteisessä päätöksenteossa (Participation in Long-Term Decision-Making, PALO, 2017-2022, hankenumero 326662). The argument quality evaluation survey examined the effect of an argument's source on the respondents' assessment of the credibility of the argument. The topics of the arguments included protection of employees against dismissal, wind power, income disparity, and licenses to shoot wolves. The data were collected as part of two Academy of Finland projects: Consortium of Trust Research: Pathways to Political Trust (CONTRE, 2015-2019) and Participation in Long-Term Decision-Making (PALO, 2017-2022, ID: 326662). The respondents were randomly divided into four groups. Depending on the group, the person presenting the argument was described to the respondents either as a partial, impartial, or reluctant source, or the arguments were presented without a source. The following arguments were included in the survey: "Protection of employees against dismissal should be decreased in companies with less than 20 employees, because it would reduce the economic risks of these companies", "More wind plants must be built because increasing the use of renewable energy sources is an effective way to curb climate change", "The government should take measures to reduce differences in income levels because low income disparities increase everybody's well-being", and "The number of shooting licenses for wolves should be increased, because it would strengthen the sense of security of the people living near areas with a high number of wolves". The sources of the arguments included, for example, owners and employees of different-sized companies, people living close to wind farms, people with low, medium, or high incomes, and people living close to a wolf pack or members of a wildlife conservation NGO. The respondents were asked to evaluate the credibility of the argument, the expertise and trustworthiness of the argument's source, and the level of interest the argument's source would show towards the argument topic. Finally, the respondents' own opinions on the topics of the arguments were surveyed. A number of items from the Big Five Inventory (John et al.) and a test of Machiavellianism were also presented to the respondents. Additionally, the respondents' political party preference, left-right political self-placement, interest in societal issues, and trust in other people and institutions were examined. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age, mother tongue, region of residence, level of education, and household income
Parish Elected Officials Survey 2019
Seuraavaksi kysyttiin, mikä on kirkon rooli ilmastonmuutoksen torjunnassa. Vastaajilta tiedusteltiin kirkollisten toimien määrän, kuten kasteiden, vähenemisestä ja kirkon toimista niiden lisäämiseksi. Lisäksi esitettiin väittämiä kummiuteen ja kummien tukemiseen liittyen. Omaa arjen uskonnollisuutta kartoitettiin henkilökohtaiseen hartauselämään liittyvillä kysymyksillä, kuten mitkä ovat vastaajalle hengellisesti merkityksellisimpiä teoksia tai vaikuttajia. Lopuksi kysyttiin tutkimustiedon käytöstä työssä. Taustamuuttujina ovat syntymävuosi, sukupuoli, työskentelyn kesto luottamushenkilönä, työskentelyseurakunnan koko, hiippakunta, työskenteleekö kaupungissa vai maaseudulla, vuoden 2019 eduskuntavaaleissa äänestämä puolue ja herätysliikkeeseen tai kristilliseen järjestöön kuuluminen. The survey was aimed at people in positions of trust in the parishes of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. Main themes of the survey included voluntary work in and the culture of the parish, the future of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and current issues in the church, managerial duties and equality in the church, the Marriage Act, climate change, church services, religiosity in everyday life, and utilising research data in parish work. First, the survey examined parish activities and the role of parishes in Finnish society. The respondents were asked how well several statements described the activities of their parish, for example, whether parish work occurred in different kinds of networks outside the parish (e.g. schools and organisations) and whether the parish paid special attention in the activities to those at risk of exclusion. The role of volunteers and voluntary work in the parish were charted next with statements on, for example, whether the volunteers were independent in innovating and organising parish activities and whether work tasks for volunteers were planned in cooperation with parish employees. Views on the future of the church and current issues were surveyed regarding different ways of managing the deteriorating economy of parishes (e.g. raising the church tax, selling property), where parish resources for helping those in need should be primarily directed (e.g. supporting families in crisis, mitigating poverty, helping the lonely and sick), and whether the church should always offer aid to refugees. Opinions on managerial duties and equality in the church were examined next with various statements. The statements included, for example, whether the respondents thought more women should be in managerial positions in the church and whether the status of sexual and gender minorities in the church should be improved. The respondents' views on the Marriage Act were surveyed (e.g. whether the church should continue to only officiate opposite-sex marriages or also officiate same-sex marriages), and opinions on the role of the church in mitigating climate change were charted (e.g. whether the church should guide people to change their way of living to be more sustainable). The respondents were also asked about parish services in general and specifically relating to baptism and the role of godparents. Next, religiosity in the respondents' everyday life was surveyed. The respondents were asked, for example, whether prayers or meditation were a regular part of their life, which books were spiritually most significant for them (excluding holy books of religions), and who were the most significant spiritual influencers for them. Finally, the respondents were asked about utilising research data in their work as elected officials in the parish (e.g. where they found research data on the church, whether they actively searched for it, and what types of analysis and reports they thought they needed for their work in the church). The background variables included the respondent's year of birth, gender, how long R had worked as an elected official in the parish, number of persons in the parish, diocese, type of municipality (urban or rural), political party R had voted for in the 2019 parliamentary elections, and whether R belonged to a revivalist movement or a Christian organisation

Finnish Youth Survey 2020
Aluksi vastaajilta kysyttiin, millaiseksi he kokevat nykyisen kotikuntansa asua. Main themes of the Finnish Youth Survey 2020 included the availability and accessibility of social and health care services and experiences related to their use. First, the respondents were asked whether the municipality they currently lived in was a good place to live. Next, they were asked which social and health services (e.g. student health services, mental health services, child protection services, services for people with disabilities) they had used in the last 12 months, how many times they had used the services, whether their access to the services had been sufficient for their needs, and whether they had received the help they needed. Use of other services (e.g. youth services, libraries, guided leisure time activities) in the municipality were also surveyed. User experiences with different social and health services were charted by asking the respondents whether they agreed or disagreed with a series of statements (e.g. the staff treated me with respect, I was able to access the services quickly, my financial situation made it difficult to access care, I experienced discrimination or prejudice, matters related to my care were explained to me clearly, the distance to the place of care was inconvenient). Views on the operation of social and health services in Finland were investigated with questions on whether the respondents felt that social and health services worked well, whether they trusted the expertise of staff, and whether they felt that social and health services contributed to equality and justice. Opinions on and experiences with online social and health services were surveyed by, for example, asking the respondents whether they had difficulty accessing online services, whether they had used online social and health services, whether the services they needed were available online, and whether they had access to an internet connection or a smart phone. The respondents' views on how much responsibility different sectors and groups (e.g. the state, municipalities, the church and other religious communities, businesses, family and relatives) had for the well-being of Finnish people were charted. On the topics of well-being and everyday life, the respondents were, for example, asked whether they felt that their daily actions were meaningful, whether they felt that they were in control of their lives, and whether they felt that it was best to trust no one. The respondents were also asked how connected they felt to Finnish society, the EU, Europe, and the global community. The impact of the respondents' financial situation on their every day lives was investigated with questions on whether they had ever been unable to buy necessary items due to a lack of money, whether they had ever been bullied due to a lack of money, and whether they had ever had to quit a hobby due to a lack of money. Finally, the respondents' satisfaction with their leisure time, relationships, state of health, physical fitness, and appearance was surveyed. Background variables included, among others, the respondent's gender, age, region of residence, state of health, type of educational institution currently attended, education level, financial situation, economic activity, household composition, whether the R identified as a member of a minority and if yes, which minority, and the highest education level attained the R's mother, father, and spouse/partner
