The school health promotion study, conducted by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, examines the well-being, health, and school life of children and young people of different ages. This dataset consists of responses to the 2019 survey by eight- and ninth-graders in basic education and first- and second-year students in upper secondary education. The respondents filled out the questionnaire during the school day at their school or educational institution. The language options for the survey were Finnish, Swedish, Russian, English, and North Sámi. First, the respondents' opinions on school in general, their class/group, and the teachers were examined. The respondents were asked whether they had had the possibility to influence various things at their school during the present school year. Questions also surveyed how the respondents felt about recesses and breaks, whether they were experiencing difficulties in school, and whether something had bothered them at school. School bullying was examined with questions on whether the respondents had been bullied or had bullied others during the present semester, whether they had told anyone if they had been bullied, and what had happened after they had reported it. The respondents' physical and mental health, social relationships, and dating and sexual health were also charted. Next, the respondents' habits regarding brushing their teeth, sleeping, and physical exercise were surveyed. The respondents were asked whether they used tobacco products, alcohol, or other substances, and how they had gotten the substances they had used. Harassment, sexual harassment, and violence experienced by the respondents were also examined. The respondents were asked whether they had received help or services from a school nurse, physician, social worker or psychologist, and how easy it had been to get help. Finally, the respondents' relationship with their family and how they spent their leisure time were charted. Background variables included the respondent's NUTS3 region of residence, official and perceived gender, year of birth, whether R was a minor, grade in school, living arrangements (categorised), background based on R's and their parents' country of birth (categorised), and how long R had lived in Finland
Citizens' Pulse 1/2022
Korona-ajan toimintaa selvitettiin kysymällä, kuinka hyvin vastaaja on noudattanut koronaviruksen leviämistä ehkäiseviä suosituksia. Kysyttiin myös koronarokotteiden ottamisesta. Edelleen kartoitettiin koronaviruksen leviämisen estämiseen käytettyjen omaehtoisten suojauskeinojen, kuten kasvomaskien, kotitestien ja koronapassin hyödyllisyyttä ja hyväksyttävyyttä. Taustamuuttujina olivat vastaajan sukupuoli, ikäryhmä, maakunta, koulutus sekä tietoja kotitalouden rakenteesta ja taloudellisesta tilanteesta. The Citizens' Pulse surveys examine Finnish attitudes and opinions in the context of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Main themes in the surveys include the activity and communication of authorities, compliance with regulations, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. The first collection round of 2022 surveyed the respondents' trust in other people and in various institutions, such as the Finnish Government, the health care system, and the media. The respondents' state of mind was examined with questions on various matters relating to health and well-being. The questions covered, for example, whether the respondents were worried about their own risk or the risk of people close to them contracting COVID-19, the availability of health care for them and people close to them for issues unrelated to COVID-19, and their own mental well-being. Additionally, the respondents were asked about their concerns in regard to livelihood and everyday life (e.g. whether they were worried about the adequacy of their income or the income of people close to them, the uncertainty regarding how long the exceptional circumstances would last, and their children's schooling). The respondents' confidence in their future and experiences of stress were surveyed, and the respondents were asked to evaluate whether an atmosphere of crisis prevailed amongst Finns. Next, the respondents opinions on the availability, reliability and accuracy of the information provided by Finnish authorities on the coronavirus crisis was charted. Compliance with coronavirus restrictions was examined by asking the respondents whether they had followed the restrictions and recommendations set by authorities for preventing transmission of the virus, including maintaining safe distances, washing hands regularly, wearing a face mask, avoiding touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands, using a hand sanitiser when it was available in public places, and minimising contacts with people outside immediate family and friends. The respondents were also asked whether they had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and how necessary they felt that it was to follow measures such as wearing a mask and maintaining safe distances after receiving two or three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Finally, the respondents were asked how useful they thought several measures were in preventing the spread of COVID-19 (e.g. testing yourself with rapid antigen at-home tests, avoiding public events, and using a COVID-19 certificate to enter restaurants and events), and how long they would be willing to comply with the measures. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, NUTS3 region of residence, highest level of education, household composition, and perceived financial situation of household
Citizens' Pulse 4/2022
Kysyttiin myös kuinka oikeudenmukaisena he pitävät suomalaista yhteiskuntaa. The Citizens' Pulse surveys examine Finnish attitudes and opinions in the context of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Main themes in the surveys include the activity and communication of authorities, compliance with regulations, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. This collection round also included questions about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and preparing for crisis situations. The fourth collection round of 2022 surveyed the respondents' trust in various institutions, such as the Finnish Government, the health care system, and the Finnish Defence Forces. The respondents were asked to evaluate how fair or unfair they thought Finnish society was at present, and their state of mind was examined with questions on various matters relating to health, well-being, and their situation in life. The questions covered, for example, the respondents' own mental well-being, whether they were worried about the adequacy of their income, their confidence in their future, experiences of stress and togetherness, and whether they felt their lives were meaningful. Additionally, the respondents were asked to evaluate whether an atmosphere of crisis prevailed amongst Finns. The next set of questions focused on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and crisis situations in general. In relation to the crisis in Ukraine, the respondents were, for example, asked about their sense of security, worries caused by the crisis and its possible impact on the Finnish economy and their own financial situation, and whether they were concerned that the war might expand beyond Ukraine. Opinions on the economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU, how well authorities had been prepared for crises like the crisis in Ukraine, and whether the uncertainty caused by the Ukraine crisis had impacted the respondents' consumer behaviour were charted. The respondents were also asked whether they had noticed any cyber security issues or instances where purposefully misleading claims based on misinformation were spread on social media or online over the previous month, and how well they felt they had prepared for crisis situations (e.g. by stockpiling food and medicine). Those who indicated that they had not made preparations were asked to identify the reasons they had not prepared (e.g. lack of time, feeling that stockpiling was not necessary, lack of information, limited financial resources). On the topics of communication and dissemination of information, the respondents' opinions on the availability, reliability and accuracy of the information provided by Finnish authorities on the coronavirus crisis were charted. Compliance with coronavirus restrictions was examined by asking the respondents whether they had followed the restrictions and recommendations set by authorities for preventing transmission of the virus, including maintaining safe distances, wearing a face mask, and minimising contacts with people outside immediate family and friends. The respondents were also asked how necessary they felt that it was to follow measures such as wearing a mask and maintaining safe distances after receiving two or three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Finnish Student Health and Well-being Survey 2021
Kyselyssä on käytetty kansainvälisesti tunnettuja mittareita, joihin perustuvat indikaattorimuuttujat tunnistat aineistossa muuttujan selitteestä löytyvästä lyhenteestä. Alla suluissa viitataan niihin kyselyn muuttujiin, joihin indikaattori perustuu. This national survey examined the health and health-related behaviour of university and university of applied sciences (polytechnic) students in Finland. Questions covered, among other topics, physical, mental and dental health, health-related behaviour, use of health services, and satisfaction with health services. Factors related to the ability to study and well-being, such as social relationships and income, were also examined. The survey also included questions on the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing at the time. The study was funded by the Social Insurance Institution, the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare. General state of health was charted with a number of questions relating to long-term illnesses, disabilities or disorders, and current well-being in general. The respondents were asked if they had suffered from a variety of symptoms in the previous 12 months. Birth control methods used by the respondent and her/his partner within the previous 12 months were surveyed. Some questions covered the respondents' weight, height, and attitude toward food. Psychological or social symptoms causing problems were investigated. Psychosocial health was further studied using items of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). Use of healthcare services by different types of service providers and satisfaction with the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) were surveyed, along with reasons for using the services of other healthcare service providers. Time spent sitting during the day as well as engagement in sporting activities and less vigorous physical activities were surveyed. Eating habits were investigated with a number of questions, for instance, asking whether the respondents ate at student restaurants, what diet they followed, on how many days per week they ate certain meals or snacks (e.g. breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner), and the consumption of fruit and vegetables. The respondents were also asked how often they brushed or flossed their teeth and used toothpaste or xylitol products, and whether they had problems with teeth grinding, facial pain or jaw locking. Health-related behaviour was further studied by asking the respondents about their use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco products (amount, frequency), as well as internet use and gambling. Drinking habits were further charted using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Internet use was examined with questions regarding the purposes for which respondents used the internet, and if it had caused problems with their circadian rhythm, studying or relationships. Questions also covered gambling and possible problems caused by it. The survey also studied interpersonal relationships and financial circumstances. The respondents were asked about their household composition and living arrangements, partnerships, sexual orientation, use of contraception, bullying experienced during university studies, whether they felt lonely or part of a group, and whether they had someone close to them with whom they could discuss their affairs. The respondents were asked to evaluate their financial situation and how well they had managed financially over the previous 12 months. The respondents' participation in paid work during the academic year was also surveyed, and they were asked how working had affected their studies. Views on family life were examined with questions on whether the respondents would like to have children in the future and when, and if not at the moment, why (e.g. their studies not being finished, being too young, financial situation, wanting to pursue a career). Those respondents who already had children were asked about how having a child had impacted their life (e.g. improvement in relationship with spouse, financial situation worsened, progressing with studies became harder). The impact of the COVID-19 epidemic was surveyed with questions on how the epidemic or the subsequent restrictive measures had affected the respondents' studies, whether the pandemic had negatively affected the respondents' financial situation, and whether the pandemic or the subsequent restrictive measures had affected certain areas of the respondents' everyday lives (e.g. substance use, sleeping difficulties, keeping in touch with friends and relatives, contact with fellow students, feeling optimistic about the future). Indicator variables created by the Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare and based on some original survey variables are included in the data. Some indicators are based on the following measurements: General Health Questionnaire 12 (GHQ-12), Mental Health Inventory 5 (MHI-5), SCOFF = eating disorder risk, Body Mass Index (BMI), Compulsive Internet Use Scale 5 (CIUS-5), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Concise (AUDIT-C), and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-1k = binge drinking (AUDIT-1k). Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, field of study, height, weight, whether they attended a university or a university of applied sciences, and the year the respondent started their studies
Police Barometer 2020
The Police Barometer surveys study Finnish public opinion on the role and services of the police, feelings about safety and security, fear of crime, experiences of crime, and trust in the national institutions in crime prevention. The 2020 survey was funded by the Ministry of the Interior. Initially, respondents assessed the ability of the police to guarantee public order and security in Finland, the importance of various tasks in police work (e.g. solving different types of crime, traffic control, emergency response, police patrol). Views on how serious a problem crime was in the respondents' own neighbourhoods were also examined. Sense of security and fear of crime were studied by asking how worried the respondents were about certain issues (e.g. assaults, burglaries, drunk driving, sexual harassment, cybercrime). Respondents were asked to identify circumstances in which they feel unsafe in if they are alone (e.g. at home during the day, in the town centre after dark after dark, or in a residential area late on Friday and Saturday nights). The respondents were asked whether they themselves had become victims of certain crimes, whether they had reported the crime to the police, and if not, why. Further questions surveyed whether the respondents had been eyewitnesses to any crimes (e.g. burglaries or car theft) or witnesses/complainants in a criminal procedure, and whether they had experienced a threat or pressure from somebody subjected to a criminal procedure. Views on the accessibility and visibility of the police were examined by asking what the distance was from the respondent's home to the nearest police station, how long they thought it would take for the police to respond to an emergency, and how often the respondents had seen the police patrolling in their own neighbourhood. The quality of police services was assessed with questions about the last time the respondents had contacted the police, reasons for doing so, and how they had been treated. The respondents also rated how well the police had succeeded in solving crimes, preventing crime, providing help quickly, etc. Opinions on the attitude of the police towards people from different ethnic backgrounds were studied. The survey charted opinions on the development of the services provided by the police as well as trust in various institutions, such as the police, emergency and protective services, private security guards, the Border Guard, courts, the Customs, and the Defence Forces. The quality of police conduct was also surveyed, and the respondents were asked what they felt their own duties towards the police were. Finally, the respondents' opinions on the occurrence and nature of corruption in society at large were charted. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, primary position in the labour market, highest level of education attained, mother tongue, gross annual personal income, region (NUTS3) of residence, and whether the respondent, someone in their immediate family or a close relative worked for the police

Main themes in the surveys include the activity and communication of authorities, compliance with regulations, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. This collection round also included questions about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and response to crisis situations. The third collection round of 2022 surveyed the respondents' trust in other people and in various institutions, such as the Finnish Government, the health care system, and the media. The respondents' state of mind was examined with questions on various matters relating to health, well-being, and their situation in life. The next set of questions focused on the crisis in Ukraine and crisis situations in general. In relation to the Ukraine crisis, the respondents were, for example, asked about their sense of security, worries caused by the crisis and its possible impact on the Finnish economy and their own financial situation, whether they were concerned that the war might expand beyond Ukraine, and whether they approved of the economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU. Views on crisis situations, such as COVID-19 and climate change, were charted with questions on whether the respondents felt that they had prepared for crisis situations adequately (e.g. by stockpiling food and medicine) and whether they would be willing to help others in crisis situations (e.g. by making donations to non-profit organisations, offering accommodation to people fleeing crisis zones, collecting supplies). The respondents were also asked whether they would volunteer during a crisis on their own initiative or if requested to do so by authorities or non-profit organisations. Those who indicated that they would not volunteer were asked to identify their reasons for not volunteering (e.g. want to take care of their own family, too old to take part, authorities should be responsible for providing assistance). The respondents were also asked how necessary they felt that it was to follow measures such as wearing a mask and maintaining safe distances after receiving two or three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, and whether they would be willing to receive a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine if authorities recommended it. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, NUTS3 region of residence, highest level of education, household composition, and perceived financial situation of household
Amateur Naturalism and Technology 2020-2021
Aineisto koostuu luontoharrastajien kirjoituksista liittyen luontoharrastusta tukevan teknologian käyttöön. Kirjoitusaineisto luontoharrastajien teknologiaan liittyvistä kokemuksista on kerätty alun perin tutkimukseen, jossa tarkastellaan teknologian vaikutuksia ihmisten luontosuhteeseen ja luonnon tuntemukseen. Kirjoituskutsuun saivat vastata kaikki luontoharrastajat, joilla on jonkinlaisia kokemuksia tai mielipiteitä teknologiasta. Kirjoittaa sai, vaikka vastaaja ei itse käyttäisikään teknologiaa apuna luontoharrastuksessaan. Aineisto kerättiin koronapandemian aikana, johon viitataan myös osassa kirjoituksista. Keruukutsussa vastaajille annettiin useampia kirjoittamista ohjaavia apukysymyksiä. Arkistoinnin yhteydessä taustatiedoista tuotettiin erillinen html-hakemisto, jonka avulla aineistoa on helppo selata. The dataset consists of texts by nature enthusiasts on utilising technology in their nature-related hobbies. The data were collected for a study on the impact of technology on people's connection with nature and knowledge of nature. The invitation to write was aimed at all nature enthusiasts who had experiences of or opinions on technology, even if they had not utilised technology in their hobby. The data were collected during the coronavirus pandemic, so some texts also reference COVID-19. The writing guidelines instructed the writers to describe their nature-related hobby and their relationship with mobile technology. The guidelines included questions on, for instance, whether the writers enjoyed being in nature alone or with someone else, how they utilised technology in their hobby, whether they shared pictures of nature on their social media, and whether they wrote about their nature observations online. Additionally, the writers were asked whether technology had inspired them to identify new species or influenced their behaviour in nature. Background information included the writer's gender, age group, and whether they lived in an urban or rural environment. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish

Main themes included the significance of an individual's immediate circle and area of residence, belonging to different groups, social orientation, and values as constructors of personal identity. The study was funded by Finnish Cultural Foundation and E2 Research. First, the respondents were asked how significant they thought various regional and social factors, such as their current area of residence, being a Finnish or European citizen, level of education, and religiosity, were as contributors to their identity. The respondents' feelings of belonging to a specific regional, cultural or ethnic group (e.g. people living in South Ostrobothnia or Lapland, or Swedish-speaking Finns) were also surveyed. The respondents were asked to describe their area of residence (e.g. whether they lived in a large city centre, suburb, or rural town) and their family's social class (e.g. whether their family was a working or middle class family) during their childhood. Next, the respondents' views on the least and most disadvantaged groups in Finland were charted (e.g. whether they thought young people, entrepreneurs, students, asylum seekers, or people living in cities were too disadvantaged/advantaged compared to others). Several statements were presented to the respondents to examine their values and attitudes. The statements included, for example, whether the respondent thought that being Finnish was connected to one's ethnic background, that the media portrayed Finnish opinions inaccurately, and that Finland needs strong leadership so that social problems can be fixed without compromises. The respondents were also asked how they would describe themselves (e.g. as easily excited, disciplined, curious, modest). Finally, the importance of several things for the respondents, such as power, wealth, equality, and forgiveness, was charted. The respondents were also asked to consider what was extremely important for them in their life (e.g. health, love, children, traditions, safety and security). Background variables included, among others, the respondent's NUTS2 and NUTS3 regions of residence, number of inhabitants in R's municipality of residence, gender, age group, degree of urbanisation of R's municipality of residence, subjective social class, field and level of education, economic activity and occupational status, household composition, and household income
Role of Media in Everyday Life and One Day Media Diaries 2021
Aineisto koostuu päiväkirjateksteistä, joissa kirjoittajia pyydettiin kuvaamaan, miten he käyttivät mediaa keskiviikkona 10.3.2021. Aineistosta on tehty html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla kirjoituksia on helppo selata. The dataset consists of media diaries in which the participants described their media use on 10 March 2021.
