    No full text
The study investigated Finnish expatriates' views of Finland and experiences of living abroad. Main topics of the survey included well-being, social networks, political participation, reasons for moving abroad, the services available for expatriate Finns, the effects of COVID-19 and Brexit on expatriate Finns, and the respondents' interest in moving back to Finland. The survey was conducted in co-operation with the Church Council/Office of the Church Council Department for International Relations, the Finland Society, the Finnish Seamen's Mission, and the Finnish Lifelong Learning Foundation. The respondents' life situation was surveyed with questions on what their current home country was, how long they had lived in their current home country, and which factors had influenced their move to their current home country (e.g. work, studies, work of their spouse, desire to live abroad, parent' background in the target country). The respondents were also asked how long they intended to live in their current country of residence, which factors affected their intention to not live in their current country of residence permanently (e.g. their work, their studies, career insecurity, children's schooling, desire to return to Finland), and whether they had lived abroad before and for how long. Full-time studies abroad and the field of studies were also charted. On the topic of well-being, the respondents were asked how much they enjoyed in their current country of residence, whether they had good social networks in their country of residence, and how they would describe their health at the moment. Interest in receiving welfare-related services (e.g. health care/medical counselling, housing and environment, employment and working conditions, social relationships) from Finnish providers was also investigated. Opinions on the services available to expatriate Finns from Finland were examined with questions on how well the respondents knew several organisations that offer services to expatriate Finns, what kind of issues they needed counselling or services for (e.g. taxation, social security, children's studies), and whether they thought that there were enough services available. The next sets of questions focused on the effects of the coronavirus epidemic and Brexit. The respondents were asked whether COVID-19 or Brexit had increased their willingness to return to Finland. On the effects of the coronavirus epidemic, the respondents were also asked how COVID-19 had affected their daily life in their country of residence and whether they had received sufficient information and support from the Finnish state and expatriate Finnish organisations regarding the coronavirus situation. Additionally, the impact of Brexit on the respondents' daily life (e.g. work, studies, plans for the future, experience of belonging to their country of residence) was surveyed. The respondents' expectations and support needs in relation to moving back to Finland were charted with questions on whether they had considered moving back to Finland, why they had considered moving back to Finland (e.g. family reasons, work situation in their country of residence, political situation in their country of residence, coronavirus epidemic), and what matters they would like to receive guidance on regarding a possible move back to Finland (e.g. practical issues related to moving, benefits and services, looking for a job). The respondents' social networks in their current country of residence and whether coronavirus had decreased their social interaction with others in their current country of residence were surveyed. Participation in different activities (e.g. Finland Society and/or Finnish Expatriate Parliament, Finnish School, expatriate Finn discussion groups on Facebook), and how important different ways to maintain contact with other Finns and Finnish identity (e.g. participating in the activities of expatriate Finnish communities, having the possibility to use the Finnish language) were investigated. In addition, the respondents' contact with and visits to Finland were surveyed by asking how often the respondents had visited Finland since moving abroad, how often they followed affairs relating to Finland, where their family members currently lived, and how they kept in touch with family members living in different countries. Political participation was examined by asking the respondents how interested they were in politics in Finland and their current country of residence, in which Finnish elections they had voted, whether they had voted in the elections of their current country of residence, which reasons had influenced their decision to not vote if they had not voted, and which Finnish parties' candidates they had voted for. Additional questions were asked on the topics of religion and national identity. These questions covered, for example, religious affiliation, frequency of taking part in religious activities, and the importance of several factors in relation to the respondents' identity (e.g. being Finnish, being European, religion, patriotism, Finnish language, Finnish celebrations). Background variables included, among others, the respondent's gender, age group, country of residence, country of birth (categorised), nationalities (categorised), and mother tongue (categorised)

Aineistossa on kartoitettu kastettujen suomalaisten näkemyksiä kasteen ja kummilapsena olemisen sekä kummina toimimisen henkilökohtaisesta merkityksestä. Tutkimusta rahoitti Kirkon keskusrahasto. Vastaajilta kysyttiin, mitä heidän oma kasteensa merkitsee heille. Omiin kummilapsiin liittyen kysyttiin, mitä lapsen tai kummilapsen kaste vastaajalle merkitsee, millaisia asioita kummilapsen kanssa tekee, liittyykö kummisuhteeseen hengellisyyttä ja millä tavoin kummius muuten toteutuu. Vastaajat kertoivat myös, odottivatko he jotain kummilapseltaan. Vastaajilta kysyttiin myös, mitä he tekevät omien kummiensa kanssa, rukoilevatko he kummiensa puolesta, ja mitä he odottavat omilta kummeiltaan. Lopuksi vastaajat kertoivat, pitävätkö he itseään uskonnollisena ihmisenä ja kuinka usein he rukoilevat. Suurin osa sisältökysymyksistä on kysytty avoimina kysymyksinä. The survey charted Finnish views on the personal meaning of baptism and being a godchild or a godparent. The Citizens' Pulse surveys examine Finnish attitudes and opinions in the context of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Main themes in the surveys include the activity and communication of authorities, compliance with regulations, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. The 13th collection round of 2021 surveyed the respondents' trust in other people and in various institutions, such as the Finnish Government, the health care system, and the media. The respondents were asked to evaluate how well Finnish authorities (including the Government, Ministries, and other authorities such as the police and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare) had been prepared for epidemics such as COVID-19. The respondents' state of mind was examined with questions on various matters relating to health and well-being. The questions covered, for example, whether the respondents were worried about their own risk or the risk of people close to them contracting COVID-19, the availability of health care for them and people close to them for issues unrelated to COVID-19, and their own mental well-being. Additionally, the respondents' concerns were charted with questions regarding livelihood and everyday life (e.g. whether they were worried about the adequacy of their income or the income of people close to them, the uncertainty regarding how long the exceptional circumstances would last, and their children's schooling). Next, the respondents' confidence in their future and experiences of stress were surveyed. The respondents were asked to evaluate whether an atmosphere of crisis prevailed amongst Finns. The availability and findability of relevant information on the coronavirus crisis was charted. Compliance with coronavirus restrictions was examined by asking the respondents whether they had followed the restrictions and recommendations set by authorities for preventing transmission of the virus, including maintaining safe distances, washing hands regularly, wearing a face mask, avoiding touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands, using a hand sanitiser when it was available in public places, and minimising contacts with people outside immediate family and friends. Finally, the respondents were asked whether they had gotten vaccinated against COVID-19 and what had influenced their decision to get or to not get vaccinated. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, NUTS3 region of residence, highest level of education, household composition, and perceived financial situation of household

The dataset consists of self-administered written texts written by elderly people who have a disability. The writing invitation was aimed at individuals who are ageing with a disability and individuals with age-related disabilities or handicaps. In the writing guidelines, the participants were presented with questions that they could use to help guide their writing. The questions prompted the participants to describe their experience of ageing with a disability or the experience of living with age-related disabilities or handicaps. The participants were asked whether they had received adequate support and assistance to manage the challenges posed by their disability, and whether they felt that they were treated differently now that they were elderly or as a result of developing age-related disabilities. Additionally, the participants could write about how disability had impacted their identity, everyday life or hobbies. Background information included the participant's gender, age group, the disability the participant had, and whether the participant's municipality of residence had deemed them eligible for services for the disabled or the elderly. The dataset is only available in Finnish

Haastateltavilta kysyttiin myös, kuinka helposti he kokevat saavansa äänensä kuuluviin erilaisissa medioissa ja millaisin motiivein he esiintyvät julkisuudessa. Lisäksi pyrittiin selvittämään, kuinka usein haastateltavat esiintyvät sosiaalisessa mediassa työroolissaan ja ovatko he joutuneet työroolinsa vuoksi vihapuheen kohteeksi. Taustamuuttujina aineistossa olivat ikäryhmä, vastaajan toimintasektori, asema ja sukupuoli. The survey charted the relationship between political decision-making and the media in Finland. The survey was conducted as part of the 'Mediatization of governance. A study on media power in economic and environmental policy networks' (MeGo) research project, funded by the Academy of Finland. The respondents included people in influential positions in eight different sectors: trade and industry, politics, government, justice system, police, trade unions, research, and civic and cultural activities. First, the respondents' views were examined on various statements regarding political decision-making in Finland, for example, whether policy-makers at the national level aimed to make decisions that would benefit all Finns and whether citizens' opinions were nowadays better conveyed to policy-makers through the media than through political parties. The respondents were asked about the source of their own authority and influence (e.g. their official position, their organisation's financial resources, their expertise, or their media presence and public image) as well as their opinions on how the authority or influence of various public actors in Finland (e.g. trade unions, EU, social media, the church) had changed in the past decade. Next, the respondents were asked how often they followed traditional or online media, e.g. different newspapers, news broadcasts, or discussion forums. The respondents' opinions on their communication with journalists, e.g. whether they thought being contacted by journalists was more intrusive than useful, were surveyed, and the respondents were asked how often they personally appeared on various new outlets (e.g. nationwide TV channels, interviews in newspapers). Additionally, the respondents' work-related social media presence was charted, and they were asked how often they had been subjected to offensive feedback or hate speech because of their job. Finally, the respondents' views were examined on various statements regarding their and their organisation's communication with and through the media, the influence of the media on their and their organisation's actions, and the characteristics of public discussion and journalism in the context of decision-making. Background variables included the respondent's age group, sector of activity, position, and gender

The survey charted the concerns and feelings of security and safety of people living in Finland during the coronavirus crisis. This first part of the survey was conducted in April 2020, when the coronavirus restrictions were at their strictest. The survey was repeated in May 2020, when the partial loosening of COVID restrictions had been announced. The May 2020 survey data are also available at FSD (dataset FSD3509 Mental Resilience of Finnish People II 2020). Themes of the survey included stress and strain experienced by the respondents, their social networks, and their views on the role of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland in supporting people during the coronavirus crisis. First, the respondents were asked what had brought them comfort during the crisis, and their personal well-being and close relationships were examined with questions on, for example, whether they were regularly in contact with others, had friends they could openly talk to about their worries, and would be willing to help people close to them if needed. Views on safety and security in society were surveyed next with questions on whether the respondents thought people's indifference towards coronavirus restrictions created insecurity, whether news headlines caused fear for them, and whether they were suspicious of all news because they could potentially be fake news. The respondents were also asked which institutions or groups, such as the Finnish government, health officials, the church, parishes and other religious organisations, or their own family and relatives, they thought were the most significant in creating a feeling of security for them. Stress and strain experienced by the respondents were examined with questions on, for example, whether they were worried about their own financial situation or health, loneliness, an increase in domestic violence, or the situation of health care professionals. The respondents' views were charted on how important various actions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, such as providing spiritual support, food assistance, or online church services, had been during the crisis. Finally, the respondents were asked whether they were a member of a church or a religious community and how often they prayed. Background variables included the respondent's gender, NUTS3 region of residence, type of municipality of residence, age, marital status, size of household, level of education, income of the respondent and the household, and economic activity and occupational status

Tutkimus on osa Suomen Akatemian rahoittamaa ArtsEqual-hanketta (hankenumero 314223/2017). The survey charted the implementation of regional, physical, economical, and pedagogical accessibility solutions in educational institutions that provide basic education in the arts in Finland. Questions surveyed, among other topics, the institution's strategies to increase accessibility, in-service training for teachers and the teacher recruitment process, courses and modules provided by the institution, the student selection process, cooperation across administrative and organisational boundaries, and possible obstacles preventing the increase of accessibility. The survey was conducted as part of the ArtsEqual project funded by the Academy of Finland (ID: 314223/2017). First, the respondents were asked whether an equality and non-discrimination plan had been drawn up for the institution and whether an accessibility assessment had been carried out. Questions also focused on whether the institution's teachers had been offered in-service training and whether prospective teachers' previous work experience with different minority groups had been considered during the teacher recruitment process. Regional accessibility was surveyed by asking the respondents whether the educational institution had units in several locations and whether the institution cooperated with other educational institutions. Physical accessibility of the institution was examined with questions on, for example, whether various facilities (e.g. doorways, staff facilities) had been altered to be more accessible. Additionally, questions charted whether attention had been paid to the usability of pedagogical tools. Next, the respondents were asked whether courses and modules offered by the institution were available to groups other than children and young people, and in which languages education was offered. The process of applying to the institution and the student selection process were surveyed. The ways in which the institution had increased financial accessibility (e.g. free student places, scholarships, reduced costs) were also examined. Regarding pedagogical accessibility, the respondents were first asked how teaching strategies and learning materials had been adapted to be more accessible (e.g. by providing materials in plain language). Questions also surveyed the personal study plans of students and the institution's capacity to provide education for special needs groups. Additionally, the respondents were asked whether the institution strived to enhance the accessibility of its communication and whether various methods had been used to increase students' participation. Cooperation across administrative and organisational boundaries was charted by asking the respondents about the institution's cooperation partners. Finally, the respondents were asked to evaluate whether various issues (e.g. lack of financial resources) could obstruct the improvement of accessibility in the institution, as well as whether they thought that the ArtsEqual project had affected the promotion of accessibility in the institution. Background variables included the location of the educational institution, type of the institution, field of study (within arts education), syllabus (general or extended), and number of students

Cognitive and Affective Empathy in the Dictator Game 2018-2019

Aineisto on koottu Suomen Akatemian Osallistuminen pitkäjänteisessä päätöksenteossa -hankkeessa (Participation in Long-Term Decision-Making, PALO, hankenumero 326662). Ensimmäinen kysely toteutettiin 1-2 viikkoa ennen koetta ja siinä käytettiin kahta empatiaskaalamittaria: Interpersonal Reactivity Index, IRI (Davis 1980) sekä Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy, QCAE (Reniers et al 2011). Toinen kysely tehtiin koepäivänä varsinaisen kokeen jälkeen. Siinä mitattiin muun muuassa vastaajien poliittista vasemmisto-oikeisto -orientaatiota, kiinnostusta yhteiskunnallisiin asioihin ja institutionaalista luottamusta (esimerkiksi luottamusta tasavallan presidenttiin, eduskuntaan, oikeuslaitokseen ja poliisiin). Diktaattoripeliosio sisältää tietoa pelin kulusta, ryhmistä, rooleista, rahasumman käytöstä ja päätöksentekoon kuluneesta ajasta. Diktaattoripelissä oli neljä asetelmaa (treatment-muuttuja), joilla kartoitetaan, miten erilaiset kannustimet (esimerkiksi tiedot omasta roolista pelissä sekä empatian indusointi, edistäminen) vaikuttavat päätöksentekoon. Diktaattoripeli järjestettiin 12 koepäivän aikana. Koepäivänä osallistujat jaettiin satunnaisesti pareihin. Parin toinen pelaaja arvottiin päätöksentekijäksi ja toinen vastaanottajaksi. Päätöksentekijä sai jakaa tai olla jakamatta kokeen tekijöiltä saamansa rahasumman (16 euroa) haluamallaan tavalla ja toinen pelaaja, vastaanottaja joutui tyytymään siihen, mitä päätöksentekijä hänelle antaa. Koe toteutettiin anonyymisti tietokoneiden välityksellä: osallistujat eivät saaneet tietää, kuka heidän parinsa on. The experiment (2018-2019) on cognitive and affective empathy in the dictator game investigated the effects of prosociality, selfishness, and empathy on decision making. The research was carried out by the PCRC Decision Laboratory (PCRClab) at the University of Turku. The study was comprised of three parts. In the first part, data was collected with a questionnaire that measured participants' empathy. In the second part, participants took part in a round of the dictator game in an experimental setting at the PCRClab. Following their participation in the experiment, the participants completed a second questionnaire. The data were collected as a part of the Academy of Finland's Participation in Long-Term Decision-Making (PALO) project (project number 32662). The participants completed the first questionnaire one to two weeks before the dictator game experiment. The questionnaire consisted of two measurement tools, Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI; Davis 1980) and Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy (QCAE; Reniers et al. 2011) which were used to provide a multi-dimensional assessment of the participants' empathy. The IRI subscales measure perspective taking, fantasy, empathic concern, and personal distress. The QCAE measures cognitive and affective empathy. The cognitive empathy subscales measure perspective taking and online simulation, and the affective empathy subscales measure emotional contagion, peripheral responsivity, and proximal responsivity. Participants completed the second questionnaire on the following day after the dictator game experiment. The questionnaire measured the participants' alignment on a left-right political spectrum, interest in societal issues, and trust in institutions (e.g. the president, the parliament, politicians, the judicial system, and the police). The following sections on the dictator game experiment contain information about the progression of the game, experimental conditions, participants' roles during the experiment (decision-maker or recipient), decision-makers' use of money during the experiment, and time spent on decision making. The dictator game experimental sessions were carried out over 12 days. During the sessions, the participants were randomly divided into pairs. Each participant was randomly assigned either the role of decision-maker or recipient, forming ten decision-maker and recipient pairs. During the experiment, the decision-maker received a sum of money (16 euros), and the on-screen instructions instructed them to decide whether they wanted to give some of the money to the recipient who had been randomly assigned to them. The decision-makers were then asked to indicate how much money, if any, they would like to give to the recipient. The recipient could not influence the decision-maker's decision in any way, and they had to accept the sum that was given to them. The participants completed the experiment anonymously on computers at the PCRClab, and they were not informed of their pair's identity. The participants received a monetary reward for participating, in addition to their earnings from the dictator game. The dictator game had four experimental conditions (treatment variable) which examined how different incentives (e.g. the participant's certainty or uncertainty about their own role in the game, empathy induction) affected decision making. In the baseline experimental condition, the decision-makers were told that they had been assigned the decision-maker role and there was no empathy induction. In the second experimental condition the decision-makers were informed of their role in the game but before they had to decide how much money they would like to give to their pair, empathy was induced by asking the decision-makers to consider how receiving different amounts of money would make the recipient feel. The decision-makers also had to write down their estimations of the recipient's feelings before they decided how much money they would give to the recipient. The two remaining experimental conditions were role uncertainty with no empathy induction and role uncertainty with empathy induction. In these experimental conditions, the decision-makers were told that they had not been assigned a role yet and that roles would be randomly assigned after all participants had made their decision. They were then asked to decide how much money they would give the recipient if they were the decision-maker. In each experimental condition, the time that the decision-makers took to make a decision was measured. Background variables included the respondent's gender, birth year, the highest education attained, mother tongue, and degree of urbanisation
