Citizens' Pulse 14/2021
The Citizens' Pulse surveys examine Finnish attitudes and opinions in the context of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Main themes in the surveys include the activity and communication of authorities, compliance with regulations, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. The 14th collection round of 2021 surveyed the respondents' opinions on the reliability of the information provided by various Finnish authorities (e.g. the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare) and members of various groups (e.g. health care employees, researchers) on the coronavirus crisis. The respondents were asked to evaluate how fair or unfair they thought Finnish society was at present and how well Finnish authorities (including the Government, Ministries, and other authorities such as the police and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare) had been prepared for epidemics such as COVID-19. The respondents' state of mind was examined with questions on various matters relating to health and well-being. The questions covered, for example, whether the respondents were worried about their own risk or the risk of people close to them contracting COVID-19, the availability of health care for them and people close to them for issues unrelated to COVID-19, and their own mental well-being. Additionally, the respondents' concerns were charted with questions regarding livelihood and everyday life (e.g. whether they were worried about the adequacy of their income or the income of people close to them, the uncertainty regarding how long the exceptional circumstances would last, and their children's schooling). Next, the respondents' confidence in their future and experiences of stress were surveyed. The respondents were asked to evaluate whether an atmosphere of crisis prevailed amongst Finns. The availability and findability of relevant information on the coronavirus crisis was charted. Compliance with coronavirus restrictions was examined by asking the respondents whether they had followed the restrictions and recommendations set by authorities for preventing transmission of the virus, including maintaining safe distances, washing hands regularly, wearing a face mask, avoiding touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands, using a hand sanitiser when it was available in public places, and minimising contacts with people outside immediate family and friends. Finally, the respondents were asked how useful they thought several measures were in preventing the spread of COVID-19 (e.g. testing yourself with rapid antigen at-home tests, avoiding public events, and using a COVID-19 certificate to enter restaurants and events), how easy it had been/would be for the respondents to comply with the measures, and how long they would be willing to comply with the measures. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, NUTS3 region of residence, highest level of education, household composition, and perceived financial situation of household
Child-up: Survey for Parents 2019
Aineistossa on kartoitettu koululaisten vanhempien kokemuksia monikulttuurisuudesta, lasten pärjäämisestä koulussa ja kodin ja koulun välisestä viestinnästä. Aineisto on kerätty osana Child-up-hanketta, jonka tavoitteena on lisätä ymmärrystä maahanmuuttajataustaisten lasten, nuorten ja heidän huoltajiensa kokemuksista oppilaitoksissa, varhaiskasvatuksessa ja kasvatusyhteisöissä sekä heidän kanssaan työskentelevien ammattilaisten toiminnasta. Aineistoa on kerätty Suomessa, Belgiassa, Saksassa, Ruotsissa, Italiassa, Puolassa ja Iso-Britanniassa. Hankkeen on rahoittanut Euroopan Unionin Horisontti 2020 tutkimus- ja innovaatio-ohjelma. Aluksi lasten vanhemmilta kysyttiin heidän kielitaidostaan ja mitä kieliä he käyttävät eri tilanteissa. The survey charted the experiences of schoolchildren's parents regarding cultural pluralism, how their children's success at school, and teacher-parent communication. The data were collected as part of the Child-up research project, which aims to enhance understanding on the experiences of migrant children, young people, and their guardians regarding school, pre-school, and educational communities, as well as the experiences of the professionals working with them. The data were collected in Finland, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Poland, and Great Britain. The research project was funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation funding programme. First, the respondents were asked what languages they used at home and in different situations (e.g. whether they spoke with their friends in the local or their native language). The parents' views were surveyed on whether their child(ren) liked going to school, enjoyed learning new things, and could manage school tasks. They were also asked whether they thought their child(ren) had encountered difficult situations, such as new and unfamiliar situations or surroundings or trouble at school, and whether they or someone else had been able to support their child(ren) in these situations. Next, the respondents' experiences of teacher-parent communication were examined. The parents were asked what they used as the main communication channel with teachers, how satisfied they were with teacher-parent communication in general, and what they thought was the main reason for barriers or challenges in teacher-parent communication. Finally, the respondents' views were charted on several statements regarding cultural pluralism (e.g. whether they thought a diverse society more able to tackle new problems). Background variables included the respondent's role in the family, number of children, level of education, family composition, immigrant background, and language skills

The survey charted Finnish policy-makers' views on political and governmental decision-making, the present state of long-term policymaking in Finland, and civic participation. The survey was conducted as part of the Participation in Long-Term Decision-Making (PALO) research project. Between 2017 and 2022, the project was funded by the Academy of Finland's Strategic Research Council (SRC) (ID: 312617 and 312676). First, the respondents were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with various statements regarding politics in general. The statements included, for example, whether policy-makers should primarily make decisions based on expert opinions and whether they should always be obligated to comply with voters' demands. Questions also charted the respondents' opinions on governmental decision-making in Finland in the 2010s, including, for example, whether they thought that policy-makers had mostly focused on current day issues or that group-specific interests had been more highly valued in decision-making than expert opinions. Questions also specifically focused on the respondents' attitudes towards climate change. Next, the respondents were asked whether they thought various institutions and other actors (e.g. the research community, political parties, the EU, media) had influenced long-term policymaking in Finland. Furthermore, the respondents' opinions were surveyed on whether several phenomena and practices (e.g. results-focused politics, short government terms) had made long-term policymaking more difficult. The respondents were also asked whether they thought various actions could encourage more long-term policymaking. Views on civic participation were examined with questions on, for example, whether the respondents thought increased civic participation would have a positive impact on Finnish democracy and whether citizens should be given more avenues to take part in public decision-making. Finally, the respondents' views regarding their own future and personality were charted. Background variables included the respondent's gender, year of birth categorised into five-year age groups, number of children and grandchildren, field of education, job description, years worked in current or corresponding job, administrative branch, how firmly established their political party preference was, and how often they participated in debates concerning everyday political issues as a private individual

Mustasaari Resident Survey on Municipal Referendums 2020
Mustasaaren kunnassa järjestettiin vuonna 2019 kunnallinen kansanäänestys koskien kuntaliitosta Vaasan kaupungin kanssa. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa mustasaarelaisten mielipiteitä kunnallisen tason kansanäänestyksistä sekä tarkastella vuonna 2019 järjestetyn kansanäänestyksen vaikutuksia kunnan sosiaaliseen ilmapiiriin. Tutkimus on osa suurempaa tutkimushanketta Åbo Akademin Sosiaalitutkimuksen instituutissa. Tutkimusta rahoitti Högskolestiftelsen i Österbotten. In 2019, a referendum was held in the bilingual municipality of Mustasaari (Korsholm) regarding the proposed merger of the municipality with the neighbouring city of Vaasa. This survey charted the effects of the 2019 referendum on the municipality's societal climate as well as Mustasaari residents' opinions on referendums in general. The survey was conducted as part of a research project at the Åbo Akademi University Social Science Research Institute (Samforsk), funded by Högskolestiftelsen i Österbotten. First, the respondents' opinions on consultative referendums in general were surveyed. Questions focused on the respondents' positive and negative attitudes towards referendums as well as their thoughts on whether voter turnout or majority approval (e.g. over 50 percent vs two-thirds majority) should be considered when determining a referendum morally binding. Next, opinions on the 2019 referendum were examined. The respondents were asked whether they thought it had been the right decision to hold the referendum, how they had voted, and whether similar referendums should be held regarding other matters in the municipality. Additionally, the survey charted the effects of the referendum process on the respondents' voting behaviour in the upcoming municipal elections, their relationships with friends and family, and their opinions on various aspects related to the municipality of Mustasaari (e.g. municipal representatives, the city of Vaasa, and relations between language groups in Mustasaari). Finally, the respondents' views on politics and society in general were surveyed with questions on, for example, voting, politicians, and trust. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age, mother tongue, level of education, status in employment, role in the municipality, and whether the respondent had attended the events organised by the municipality to facilitate discussion before the referendum
Open Science and Research Coordination Self-Assessment 2018-2021: Interviews 2021
Aineistosta on tehty jatkokäyttäjälle html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla kirjoituksia on helppo selata. The dataset consists of interviews that were part of a self-evaluation conducted by the secretariat for the National Open Science and Research Coordination. The Federation of Finnish Learned Societies and the expert bodies hosted by it, members of the National Open Science and Research Coordination's expert panels, steering group and working groups, and the Ministry of Education and Culture, which funds the National Open Science and Research Coordination, participated in the self-evaluation. The interviews were recorded and conducted on Zoom. The interviews were semis-structured in nature, meaning that the same interview structure that had been prepared in advance was used as the basis for each interview, but each interview was allowed to proceed according to the responses of the interviewee. The interviews included questions on, for example, how coordination has affected the activities of the interviewee or their organisation, and what indicators of success the interviewee has observed in their own work. The interviewees were also asked to consider the advantages and disadvantages of the current mode of operation, as well as how coordination based on co-development and co-operation within the research community could be developed. Background information included the date of the interview, the name of the interviewer, the duration of the interview, and the relationship between the interviewer and the interviewee. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish
