Finnish University Graduates of Year 2015: Career and Employment Survey 2020
The survey charted the career and employment situation of individuals who had graduated from Finnish universities with a lower (BA/BSc or equivalent) or higher (MA/MSc or equivalent) degree in 2015. The survey was conducted five years after graduation. Main themes of the survey included the respondents' satisfaction with their degree, career path stages, current employment situation, the quality of employment, and the importance of university education for employment. The first part investigated the respondents' education and work history. They were asked whether they had, after graduation, participated in job-related training, career guidance or any additional professional qualification or higher education studies. The respondents were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with a set of attitudinal statements regarding their degree and its usefulness for employment. Further questions covered how many employers the respondents had had, whether the respondents had been entrepreneurs, self-employed or freelancers, and whether they had been outside the labour market because of family leave or unemployment. The respondents' satisfaction with their career thus far was charted, along with current occupational status, type of employer, and type of current work tasks. The respondents were also asked whether their current job required an academic degree, whether the job was commensurate with their academic qualifications, and if not, why they had accepted the job. The extent to which the respondents had been able to utilize the knowledge and skills gained during their university studies was also examined, and monthly gross income at the time of the survey was charted. Next, the respondents were asked which factors had had an impact on their employment after graduation (e.g. major/minor subjects, internship, work experience, personal networks). Questions also covered how important certain skills and know-how were in the respondents' current job and how well their studies had developed these skills (e.g. theoretical or practical knowledge of their field, problem solving, managerial skills, negotiation skills, project management, and communication in English). The 2020 survey also included questions about the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had had on the respondents' employment situation. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age at the time of graduation, NUTS3 region of residence, the university attended, and information on the degree (field of study, number of credits required for the degree, degree level)
Children and Youth Leisure Survey: 10-29-Year-Olds 2018
Aineistossa selvitettiin Suomessa asuvien 10-29 vuotiaiden lasten ja nuorten vapaa-ajanviettotottumuksia. Tiedonkeruun rahoitti valtion nuorisoneuvosto. Aineistossa liikunnaksi lukeutui ohjatun harrastustoiminnan lisäksi omaehtoiset liikuntamuodot. Tutkimuskysymyksillä pyrittiin selvittämään, miten lapset ja nuoret viettävät vapaa-aikaansa, kuinka paljon he liikkuvat ja millaista liikuntaa he harrastavat. Vanhemmilta kysyttiin, millaisia piirteitä he pitivät lastensa harrastuksilta toivottavina ja kuinka paljon he itse osallistuivat lastensa harrastuksiin. The survey studied the leisure time activities and physical activity of Finnish children and young people aged 10-29. Both everyday physical actitivies and organised sport were included. Two questionnaires were used, one for participants aged 10-14 or and the other for participants aged 15-29. The parents of the children aged 10-14 participated in the interviews and some questions were asked from them instead of the children. The formulation of the question sometimes differed slightly between the questionnaires but a great majority of issues were covered in both. Questions covered whether the participants had any hobbies and whether they felt they had enough leisure time. Parents' involvement in the participants' hobbies was investigated by asking whether the parents/guardians also took part in their hobbies (e.g. by taking them to practice, acting as a coach) and if so, how often. Participation in organized leisure time groups (e.g. sports teams, scouts, youth groups), leisure time activities other than sports, and monthly expenses associated with physical activities were surveyed. Two questions focused on the amount of screen time. Screen time was defined to include television, computers and mobile devices (e.g. smart phones) use. Physical activity was charted by asking how often the participants exercised in their leisure time at least 60 minutes a day, time spent doing vigorous exercise, whether they would like to exercise more or take part in a certain kind of exercise, whether they took part in any organised sports and how often. Reasons for exercising and not exercising were also investigated. Questions covered whether the participants mainly exercised alone or with friends, and whether their physical activity consisted mainly of sports training and competitions or everyday physical activities and how desirable certain aspects of physical activities were (e.g. ease of access, affordability, brings friends, high-quality coaching). Experiences of bullying, discrimination or inappropriate behaviour during organised sports were investigated. The participants were also asked to what degree different individuals (e.g. parents/guardians, teachers, friends, coaches) had encouraged them to engage in physical activity. They were asked to evaluate their satisfaction in different areas of their lives. These areas included overall leisure time, personal relationships, health, physical fitness, appearance, financial situation, and life in general. Background variables included the child's and responding parent's mother tongue, gender, age group, type of neighbourhood, degree of urbanisation, region of residence, financial situation, household composition, number of household members, and whether they identified as a member of a minority and if yes, which minority. For those aged 15-29, further background variables included the type of educational institution currently attended, economic activity, the highest education level attained, and the highest education level attained by the R's mother or other female guardian
Recruiters' Views on the Impact of Unemployment Periods in Recruitment
Aineisto koostuu kirjoituskutsulla kerätyistä kirjoituksista, joissa rekrytointityötä tekevät henkilöt pohtivat työnhakijan työttömyyden tai ansioluettelossa näkyvien työttömyysjaksojen mahdollisia vaikutuksia rekrytointiin. Aineisto on kerätty alun perin pro gradu -tutkielmaan. Arkistoinnin yhteydessä taustatiedoista tuotettiin erillinen html-hakemisto, jonka avulla aineistoa on helppo selata. The dataset consists of self-administered written texts by recruiters on how unemployed jobseeker status or periods of unemployment impact recruitment decisions. The data were collected for a Master's thesis. The writing invitation was aimed at individuals who had experience of recruiting employees as part of their jobs. In the writing guidelines, participants were instructed to write from the recruiter's point of view about the factors that need to be taken into consideration when recruiting unemployed or partially disabled individuals. The guidelines included questions on, for example, whether participants paid attention to periods of unemployment on applicants' CVs, the experiences participants had of assisted employment services, and what could increase interest in recruiting unemployed individuals. Background information included the participant's gender, age group, and the industry of employment for which the participant recruited employees. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is available only in Finnish
Impact of COVID-19 on the Finnish Cultural Sector 2021
Aluksi vastaajilta kysyttiin taustatietoja. The survey charted the impacts of COVID-19 on the activities the of arts, culture and creative sector in Finland. The survey was conducted by the Ministry of Education and Culture to examine the current situation of the Finnish cultural section as affected by the exceptional circumstances. Survey respondents included both organisations and individuals working in the arts and culture sector. A related follow-up survey, conducted in the spring of 2020, is also archived at FSD (FSD3477 Impact of COVID-19 on the Finnish Cultural Sector 2020). The respondents in the two datasets cannot be connected. First, the respondents were asked whether their or their organisation's activities had been carried out as planned, either with small or significant modifications, during 2020, or whether the pandemic had prevented their activities completely. The respondents' views, based on their experiences from 2020 and the COVID-19 situation at the time, were also surveyed on the potential impacts of the pandemic on the arts and culture sector in the first half of 2021. Only the background information questions and questions 13 and 14 (described above) were mandatory for the respondents. Additionally, the survey included questions aimed at specific respondent groups. The respondents were asked, for instance, how the COVID-19 pandemic had been visible in their activities and where they had received support amidst the pandemic. Background variables included the type of the respondent's organisation, main field of the respondent's activities, and whether the respondent's organisation received central government transfers
Women's Experiences of Body Positive Selfie Production 2018
"Lupanäkyä" -kampanja on osa Ylen vuonna 2017 lanseeraaman Vaakakapinan toimintaa. Aineistonkeruu on tehty osana tutkimusprojektia Seksuaalisuus ja leikki mediakulttuurissa ja tutkimusta on rahoittanut Suomen Akatemia (hankenumero 309382). Aineisto on kerätty kahdessa osassa, joista ensimmäinen osa koostuu viidestä kirjoitusvastauksesta ja toinen osa koostuu kirjoitusvastauksen lähettäneiden henkilöiden haastatteluista. Kirjoituspyyntö jaettiin Facebookin Jenny ja läskimyytinmurtajat -ryhmässä. Kirjoituspyynnössä vastaajia pyydettiin kertomaan, mitä "lupanäkyä" -kampanja merkitsee itselle, ja mitä merkityksiä on "lupanäkyä" -tunnisteella jaetulla omakuvalla. Kirjoitusvastauksen lähettäneitä henkilöitä haastateltiin aineistonkeruun toisessa vaiheessa. Haastatteluissa selvitettiin, millainen suhde haastateltavalla on selfieihin ja sosiaaliseen mediaan, ja kuinka paljon haastateltava käyttää sosiaalista mediaa. Lisäksi haastateltavilta kysyttiin "lupanäkyä" -kuvasta ja kuvan ottohetkestä, esimerkiksi millainen oma "lupanäkyä" -kuva on ja miten haastateltava päätti, minkä kuvan jakaa "lupanäkyä" -tunnisteella. Kaikki haastateltavat eivät ottaneet osaa "lupanäkyä" -kampanjaan omalla kuvallaan. Taustatietoina on kysytty ikää ja sukupuolta. Aineistosta on tehty jatkokäyttäjälle html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla kirjoituksia on helppo selata. The dataset consists of self-administered written texts and interviews on body positivity and the lupanäkyä ("permission to be visible") campaign and hashtag on social media. The lupanäkyä hashtag was part of the Vaakakapina ("Rebellion against scales") movement launched by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE). The study was conducted as part of the Sexuality and Play in Media Culture research project, and it was funded by the Academy of Finland (project number 309382). The data were collected in two phases. In the first phase, a writing invitation was shared in the Jenny ja läskimyytinmurtajat Facebook group. The writing invitation prompted participants to describe what the lupanäkyä hashtag and the selfies that they had posted under the hashtag had meant for them. In the second phase of data collection, the individuals who had taken part in the first phase of the study were interviewed. During the interviews, the participants' relationship with social media and selfies, as well as their use of social media were examined. The participants were also asked about the image that they had shared under the lupanäkyä hashtag, for example, what was the image like and how did they decide which image to share under the hashtag. All interviewees had not posted an image of themselves under the lupanäkyä hashtag. Background information included the participant's gender and age group. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish
Finnish Experiences of Shame in Working Life 2020-2021
Aineisto sisältää kirjoituskutsulla kerättyjä kirjoituksia liittyen työelämässä koettuun häpeään. Aineisto on kerätty alun perin tutkielmaan, jossa selvitettiin, mikä työelämässä aiheuttaa häpeän tunnetta. Aineistosta on tehty jatkokäyttäjälle html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla kirjoituksia on helppo selata. The dataset consists of self-administered written texts on Finnish experiences of shame in working life. The data were collected for a Master's thesis that examined the causes of shame in working life. The writing invitation was shared on social media channels. In the writing guidelines, participants were instructed to write a story in their own words about experiences of shame they had had in their working lives. The experience of shame could be a memory from years ago or an event that had happened recently, and the story could focus on a single event or describe a situation where the participant had repeatedly experienced shame at work. The participants could describe what was going on in their minds during the experience of shame and why the situation had caused them to feel shame. The guiding questions also asked the participants to write about the thoughts that they had had in response to the situation, how they had reacted and acted in the situation, and what kind of impact the experience of shame had had on themselves and others. Background information included the participant's gender, age group, the highest education attained, and whether the participants had worked in the public sector, private sector or for a non-profit organisation during the experience of shame. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish
Interviews on Cultural Participation 2018
Aineistosta on tehty jatkokäyttäjälle html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla kirjoituksia on helppo selata. This dataset consists of individual and group interviews on the cultural habits and leisure time activities of culturally inactive people in Finland. The interviewees also discussed, for example, how they spent their leisure time and how they would spend their time if they could do anything they wanted. Additionally, the cultural events that the interviewees had attended were surveyed. In some of the interviews, pictures of art paintings were used as stimuli for the participants. Background information included the interviewee's age, gender and level of education. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish
Citizens' Pulse 10/2022
Kysyttiin myös kuinka oikeudenmukaisena he pitävät suomalaista yhteiskuntaa. The Citizens' Pulse surveys examine Finnish attitudes and opinions in the context of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Main themes in the surveys include the activity and communication of authorities, compliance with regulations, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. This collection round also included questions on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and energy conservation. The tenth collection round of 2022 surveyed the respondents' trust in other people and various institutions (e.g. the Finnish Government, the health care system, the media, and the Finnish Defence Forces). The respondents were asked to evaluate how fair or unfair they thought Finnish society was at present, and their state of mind was examined with questions on various matters relating to health, well-being, and their situation in life. The questions covered, for example, the respondents' own mental well-being, whether they were worried about the adequacy of their income, their confidence in their future, experiences of stress and togetherness, and whether they felt their lives were meaningful and safe. Additionally, the respondents were asked to evaluate whether an atmosphere of crisis prevailed amongst Finns. The next set of questions focused on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The respondents were asked how concerned they were about the crisis in Ukraine and its effects, whether they were concerned about the possible impact of the war on the Finnish economy and the safety of Finland and Europe, and whether they were concerned that the war might expand beyond Ukraine. Opinions on the economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU, whether Finland should be ready to receive significant numbers of refugees from Ukraine if necessary, and whether the uncertainty caused by the Ukraine crisis had impacted the respondents' consumer behaviour were charted. On the topic of energy conservation, the respondents were asked how concerned they were about the changes in energy prices, whether they felt they had enough information about ways to conserve energy in their everyday lives, whether they believed that by taking energy-saving measures they could make a difference in the availability of energy during the coming months, and whether they had taken certain measures to lower their energy consumption during the past month (e.g. lowered the room temperature at home, driven less, reduced the use of electronic appliances at home, taken shorter showers). Concern over the coronavirus pandemic and its effects were surveyed. Compliance with coronavirus restrictions was examined by asking the respondents whether in the past week they had followed the restrictions and recommendations set by authorities for preventing transmission of the virus, including maintaining safe distances, wearing a face mask, and minimising contact with other people. The respondents were also asked how necessary they felt it was to follow measures such as wearing a mask and maintaining safe distances after receiving two or three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, NUTS3 region of residence, highest level of education, household composition, perceived financial situation of household, type of accommodation, and type of domestic heating system

Interviews with Elderly People Participating in the Elämänote Programme Project Activities 2019-2020
Viimeisessä haastattelussa haastateltavat saivat jättää oman viestinsä päättäjille aiheista, jotka he kokivat arvokkaiksi ikääntyneille tai johon he toivoivat parannusta yhteiskunnan tasolta. Jokaisessa kolmessa eri haastattelussa käytettiin omaa haastattelurunkoa. Taustatietoina on mainittu sukupuoli, haastattelupäivämäärä sekä haastattelun kesto. Aineistosta on tehty html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla haastatteluja on helppo selata. The dataset consists of interviews with elderly people in which the interviewees reflect on the course of their lives, everyday life, and participation in the Age Institute's Elämänote programme project. The interviews were conducted as peer interviews and the Age Institute trained and supported the interviewers during the project. The interviewers and interviewees were not previously acquainted with each other, but they lived in the same area. The aim of the study was to interview each of the interviewees a total of three times, of which two interviews took place within approximately two weeks and a third interview approximately a year after the first interview. The main themes of the interviews included the everyday lives of elderly people and their need for help in managing their everyday lives. The interviews consisted of questions on the interviewees' situation in life, factors that limited their ability to live their everyday lives, and the support they received as part of their everyday lives. Further questions focused on the future and how the interviewees thought that they would fare in the future. In addition to this, the interviewees were asked about the course of their lives and which things in their lives were important to them. The interviewees could also reflect on their participation in and their ability to influence everyday activities in their lives. In the third and final interview, the interviewees could leave a message for policymakers on topics that they felt were important to elderly people or on topics concerning elderly people for which they hoped for improvement on a societal level. Each of the three interviews had its own interview structure. Background information included the date of the interview, the duration of the interview, and the interviewee's gender. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish
