Tuberculosis is a major public health problem globally and there is a relative paucity of data on the clinical course of TB in immunosupressed adolescents. We report a case of cavitatory pulmonary tuberculosis in a diabetic adolescent. Although cavitatory lung lesions being not so common in pediatric age group. Co-existense of Diabetes Mellitus and Tuberculosisemphasizes the need for intensive screening for tuberculosis in Type 1 DM children

Oxytocin: A Potential Novel Therapeutic Agent in Treatment of Autism

    Get PDF
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by varying deficits in social interactions, communication, and learning, as well as stereotypic behaviors. Despite the significant increasing rates of ASD during the last two decades, there are few clues for its exact pathogenesis, delaying early detection and effective intervention. Thus, identifying causes and treatments is imperative. So far, there are no known efficacious treatments for the core social symptoms, although effects on repetitive behaviors are indicated with some data. During the past decade oxytocin (OT) research has shown a major upsurge. The beneficial roles of OT on social functioning raise the question regarding its potential usefulness in ASD management. If clinical application of OT in the treatment of ASD proves successful then it may introduce a new hope for afflicted individuals and their families. Fortunately pioneering clinical studies support this notion; however, more research should go on to resolve issues concerning clear mechanisms by which OT modulates social behavior before its real introduction for clinical application. Also probable adverse affects must be thoroughly investigated to ensure safe treatment outcome

    Get PDF
The present study was done in Cancer Hospital and Research Institute Gwalior (MP) to find out the frequency of ABO blood group and hemoglobin levels in lung cancer patients. ABO blood group is one of the main factor in patient’s genetic makeup and found to be associated with many diseases. Lung cancer is one of the major cancer affecting a large population now a day throughout the world. The frequency of B blood group was found to be highest with percentile frequency of 0.38 followed by O i.e. 0.33 in lung cancer patients. The ᵪ2 value found to be 0.954 (p = 0.328<0.05). Low hemoglobin level (Anemia) was also found in cancer patients, Z test value 2.3324 (p= 0.0198<0.05) indicated the hemoglobin level was significantly lower in male patients than female patients. Z test value for the hemoglobin levels of smoker and non smoker lung cancer patients was found to be 3.1226 (p =0.0018<0.001) which showed significant lower level of hemoglobin in lung cancer patients with smoking habits than the non smoker lung cancer patients

Increased anticancer efficacy by the combined administration of quercetin in multidrug resistantbreast cancer cells

    Get PDF
Quercetin is one of the bioactive flavonoid isolated from the leaves of Euphorbia hirta (Euphorbiaceae). The isolated quercetin was investigated for its antiproliferative activity in human breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells. Furthermore, the combined efficacy of quercetin with standard chemotherapeutic drug tamoxifen also studied. The results showed greater reduction in the cell viability from the QuerTam group (quercetin with tamoxifen) than tamoxifen and quercetin alone group. The IC50 values of test compounds were determined as 2μM, 0.5μM and 1.8μM for quercetin, Quertam and tamoxifen respectively. An elevated induction of apoptosis was found in QuerTam treatment when compared to quercetin and tamoxifen alone. The combined efficacy of QuerTam showed significant inhibition of cell viability by decreasing Bcl-2 protein expression and inducing apoptosis. Flow cytometry revealed a decrease in normal cells and increasing pro and late apoptotic cells indicative of apoptosis induction, while fluorescence microscopy showed evidence of the induction of apoptosis and nuclear fragmentation. To summarize these results showed that quercetin enhances the MCF-7 cell sensitivity to tamoxifen, as demonstrated by the improvement in the anticancer therapy

This study aimed to isolate the bioluminescent bacterial strains from seawater and sediments in near the Roach Park, coastal area of Tuticorin. Further to identify the luminescent bacteria strains and to screen for production of bioactive metabolites and their bioactivity against human bacterial pathogens. Bioluminescent bacteria are wide spread in natural environment. Water and sediment samples were collected from nearby mangrove ecosystem of the Roach Park off Tuticorin coast, Bay of Bengal. The luminous bacteria density was found to be 3 X 104 CFU/ml - 5 X 104 CFU/g in seawater and sediment respectively. Totally 10 luminescent bacterial strains were identified up to genus levels were selected and screened for the production of antibacterial substance, in the preliminary screening the strains SWLB3, STLB5 and STLB6 strains had shown broad spectrum activity against the human pathogens. Among these strain STBL5 exhibited predominant activity against human bacterial pathogens. The bioactive bacterial metabolites which showed higher activity against human pathogens indicate that luminescent bacteria could be used as a good source for the isolation of bioactive compounds

Background: Weaning is the introduction of the first solid foods to infants and maintenance of breastfeeding by demand upto two years of age. The first months of infants’ life are characterized by rapid growth and development and cultural, occupational and educational factors could influence these various weaning practices. This descriptive, cross-sectional,community-based study among 219 breastfeeding mothers, in Lamingo assessed weaning practices among them.Methodology: The participants were selected using multistage sampling technique. Data was collected using pre-tested,semi- structured, interviewer-administered questionnaires and analysed using Epi-Info version 3.4.5 software. Results: Most 104(47.0%), of the respondents had a good knowledge on weaning practices. One hundred and sixty seven(76.3%) of them introduced weaning foods at the age of 6 months. Majority; 87(39.7%) of the respondents gave theirchildren ‚gwete, a local porridge made from hungry rice with ‚vegetables‛ as the first food. The knowledge of weaningpractices was significantly influenced by the mothers’ level of education (p=0.0045).Conclusion: This study showed that most of the respondents had good knowledge on weaning practices, but were ignoranton what weaning meant. Therefore, it was recommended that mothers should be educated on the importance of weaning tothe growth and development of the chil

Here we describe the structure of two types of quantum spin laser form type quantum dots and wellsaccording to the bucket model. Then, with according to the structures, we study the laser equationsfirst in the conventional state, then we propagate the spin state to better gain. That is, carriers andphotons density, with according to the optical gain in both the conventional and spin states, is ratio totime. In the end, we examine the system in a steady state for a state not captured (t =0ps) and after cpassing (t =2ps)which is captured and photons produced

Evaluation of Phosphate Solubilising Potential of SomeEndophytic Fungi under Solid and Liquid State

    Get PDF
Twenty six fungi belonging to Alternaria, Aspergillus, fusarium, Paecilomyces, Penicillium sp. and few sterile mycelia were evaluated for the phosphate solubilising properties under solid and submerged cultureconditions. Most of the Aspergillus sp. exhibited good solubilisation activity than other species listed. Plate screening test confirm the highest phosphate solubilisation efficiency by Sterile mycelium sp. 3 (89.4%)followed by Aspergillus sp. 1 (85.7%) and Fusarium sp. 1 and 3 (81.25%). Solubilization index calculated for these fungi was ranged between 1.80-1.89 . All fungi were evaluated for phosphate solubilisation efficiencyunder liquid culture condition supplemented with TCP. Aspergillus sp.4, Aspergillus sp.8 and Penicillium sp.1 solubilised 29.6%, 26.7% and 24.5% respectively. Decline in pH of the culture filtrate of 10 day old culturewas observed in liquid culture of Aspergillus sp. 2 (4.59), Aspergillus sp 4 (4.79) and Aspergillus sp 8 (4.9). However, no correlation was observed between acid production and phosphate solubilisation. These fungalstrains performed differentially under both culture conditions. Hence testing of phosphate solubilisation efficiency of these organisms under both the solid and liquid conditions is suggested in the present study
