    This dataset underlies the statistical analyses central to the publication Lohbeck et al 'Drivers of farmer-managed natural regeneration in the Sahel. Lessons for restoration', published in Scientific Reports (DOI: 10.1038/s41598-020-70746-z68689791-6eec-4311-a341-bcf0cf5b1e06). The data is based on a field inventory using the Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF) methodology (see LDSF fieldguide under 'related publications', and methods in the publication in scientific reports). In addition, a detailed inventory of the trees (in the plot) and the regeneration (in the subplot) has been carried out. In addition to that functional traits have been measured for the most common species among the regeneration. Functional traits measurements followed standardized protocols (See Perez-Harguindeguy et al 2013 and methods in the publication). Functional traits at the species level were scaled to the plot level using community-weighted means, those are the values represented in the data table (see methods in publication for details). Soil variables are predicted using MIR spectroscopy (see methods in publication for details)

    The Congo Basin forests are a prime location for implementing REDD+. National REDD+ policy processes are ongoing and many REDD+ pilot initiatives are being demonstrated. However, the level of national engagement, progress and distributionof REDD+ activities varies considerably in the different Congo Basin countries. This study therefore uses a set of criteria to assess national and international policy initiatives and approaches for advancing REDD+ implementation in Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), two countries where more than two thirds of the Congo Basin forests are concentrated. Our findings show that (i) both countries have shown the highest political presence at the international climate negotiations but DRC has invested more in the size of its delegation and side events; (ii) REDD+ donors, initiatives, and funding are disproportionately skewed towards DRC making it technically more advanced; (iii) the high political interest and institutional reforms in DRC favors private sector investments in REDD+ programs; and (iv) the REDD+ policy process is internally-driven in Cameroon with a strong national ownership, while it is externally-driven in DRC with weak national ownership. To advance REDD+, the government of DRC should embark on capacity building programs that ensure the transfer of REDD+ technical know-how from international to national actors while Cameroon needs to speed-up governance reforms and be more flexible in order to attract influential international REDD+ actors.     1.Improved understanding of the carbon (C) cycle is essential to model future climates and how this may feedback to affect greenhouse gas fluxes. 2.We summarize previous work quantifying respiration rates of organic substrates and briefly discuss how advances in technology, specifically the use of chambers linked to a non-dispersive infrared gas analyzer (NDIR), can be applied to assess carbon dynamics from short-term field measurements. This technology hastens measurement and is relatively inexpensive, enabling researchers to increase replication and investigate temporal and spatial variation. 3.We describe the theory behind calculations of CO2 efflux released through organic substrates, when using a closed-chamber linked to a NDIR. These methods can in principle be extended to any chamber-based measurement of gas fluxes, including partially closed chambers as used for soil surface CO2, nitrous oxide or methane effluxes and stem CO2 respiration, although additional assumptions may apply. 4.We show that incorrect application of formulae in some earlier studies resulted in either under- or over-estimation of CO2 effluxes. Of the studies, we reviewed measuring the respiration of woody debris, leaf litter or woody stems using closed chambers linked to a NDIR, only 22% (11 of 51) provided the equations used to calculate CO2 efflux, and 72% (8 of 11) of those provided contained basic errors. Using our data on the decomposition of woody debris as an example, we found that such mistakes resulted in anywhere from 8% underestimation to 22% overestimation of CO2 efflux. The errors varied among studies and hence may limit understanding of the factors affecting emissions of CO2 and our ability to incorporate this knowledge into global carbon models. 5.We provide formulae for the correct calculation of respiration rates in future studies using closed chambers and thus provide a basis for comparative studies of factors affecting CO2 efflux from woody debris, leaf litter and other substrates. Ultimately, this will contribute to improved parameterization of forest respiration

    Tree planting by smallholder farmers in Malawi: Using the theory of planned behaviour to examine the relationship between attitudes and behaviour

    This study examined farmers' attitudes towards tree planting on farms in Malawi, using the theory of planned behaviour as a conceptual framework. Questionnaires containing a scale that measures attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control in relation to tree planting were administered to 200 farmers in Chiradzulu and Mzimba districts in Malawi. Farmers who reported planting trees in the last five years had more positive attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control compared to farmers who have not planted trees. A hierarchical logistic regression analysis showed that membership of a farmer group and attitudes had a significant positive influence on reported behaviour. Nevertheless, many farmers considered household needs such as buying food and agricultural inputs, as well as children's education, as more urgent than investing their scarce resources in tree planting, suggesting that poverty is a barrier to tree planting

    Steam-activation increased CH4 emission of stover biochar but decreased it for wood biochar by 14%–70%. Biochar generally increased CH4 emission but reduced N2O emission by 10%–41%. Emission of N2O was 17% lower for maize-stover biochar compared to Eucalyptus-wood biochar, and 3% lower for 350°C compared to 550°C pyrolysis temperature. Emission of CH4 was 21% higher for activated stover biochar compared to Eucalyptus-wood biochar and 10% lower for 350°C compared to 550°C pyrolysis temperature. No difference in net CO2 equivalent was observed among biochar grades

    Replication Data for: Effects of farmer managed natural regeneration on livelihoods in semi-arid West Africa

    This paper used a multivalued treatment framework to assess the effects of farmer managed natural regeneration (FMNR) on selected outcomes among 1080 rural household farmers in the Sahelian and Sudano-Sahelian ecozone of West Africa Sahel. The results indicate that keeping, protecting and managing trees in the farmland have significant effects on the livelihoods of the rural poor in the Sahelian countries. If 1000 households in a community decide to practice the FMNR continuously, it results in an increase in the gross income by US$ 72,000 per year. Noticeable changes are also observed on the value of tree products, with an observed significant increase in the value of the products harvested from tree by about 34–38 % among those actively practicing FMNR as compared to their counterparts. The results also lend support to the household resilience hypothesis of FMNR in that it leads to a significant increase of the dietary diversity by about 12–14 %. However, it also appeared that several factors impeded the regeneration of trees on farms. To foster the widespread dissemination and enhance the capacity of farmers to increase, diversify and sustain tree-based production systems, an enabling institutional, technical and policy environment needs to be promoted
