    The aim of this project is to enhance food security for resource-poor rural people in Eastern Africa through research that underpins national programmes to scale up the use of trees within farming systems in Ethiopia and Rwanda and then scale out successes to relevant agro-ecological zones in Uganda and Burundi. The specific objectives of the project are: 1) To characterize target farming landscapes and systems, and develop tools for matching species and management options to sites and circumstances. 2) To generalize predictions of impacts of tree species and management on crop productivity, water resources and nutrients at field, farm and landscape scales to inform scaling up to improve food security and reduce climate risk. 3) To develop effective methods and enabling environments for scaling up and out the adoption of trees on farms. 4) To develop databases and tools for monitoring and evaluation of the impact of scaling up and out the adoption of trees on farms. 5) To enhance capacity and connectivity of national partner institutions (including farmer groups) in developing and promoting locally appropriate options for adoption of farm trees

    Land use change has a major influence on the capacity of watersheds to produce watershed services such asimproving water quality and flood mitigation. The objective of this study was to simulate the effect of land usechange on the sediment and water yield in Sasumua watershed, Kenya using SWAT model. The SWAT modelwas calibrated and validated using recorded reservoir data. The validated model was then used to simulatewater and sediment yield under three scenarios of runoff curve number CN (improved land surface conditionCN-6, base case, degraded land surface condition CN+ 6). The CN was used as a surrogate to represent landsurface treatments that influence generation of surface runoff following rain events. The coefficient ofdetermination from the calibration of the model was 0.6 and 0.5 for the validation. An increase in CN by 6(scenario CN+ 6) units in the agricultural part of the watershed, increased the sediment loading to the streamsby 53.6% while a reduction by 6 units (scenario CN-6) reduced sediment loading by 34.3%. Scenario CN-6resulted in a 28.5% decrease in surface runoff, a 13.8% increase in base flow and a slight decrease in totalwater yield of 1.2%. On the other hand, scenario CN+ 6 increa sed the surface runoff by about 44%, reducedbase flow by 10.5% and increased the water yield by 6.5%. Improvement in land surface condition thatenhances infiltration is a feasible conservation measure to reduce soil erosion and subsequent sedimentation ofthe rivers and the reservoir.     Over the years, ecosystem services have been undervalued since regarded as public good. Low appreciation on the benefits provided by the ecosystem has led to the overutilization of resources, causing negative impacts to biodiversity and environment. In the Philippines, biodiversity conservation has not been given enough priority, and has been beset with various problems such as insufficient funding. This usually applies in coastal communities, where majority of community members have low capacity to contribute monetarily. However , the rising occurrence of climate-related phenomena also increases the awareness of communities and their willingness to contribute to environmental conservation activities such as Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). This study aimed to value the coastal conservation activities from households of Oroquieta City through contingent valuation method. The computed mean willingness to pay for coastal conservation using parametric estimation was PhP 30.39, wherein the estimated mean willingness to pay translates to 0.23% of their average income. Potential revenue to be collected annually could amount to PhP 1.8 million. In five years, the total collection could reach PhP 9 million, which is also substantial to make the biodiversity conservation activities sustainable. The estimation of this study could serve as basis for implementation of PES in the the coastal communities for sustainable biodiversity conservation

    A field experiment was conducted in the western Highlands of Cameroon to study the effect of Calliandra calothyrsus, compost manure and mineral fertilizer. A two factorial treatment combination made up of fertilization schemes and sanitary measures were laid out in randomised complete block design with four replication resulting to 10 treatments. data collected on physical characteristics, yield component and potatoes late blight severity were subjected to multivariate ANOVA and means seperated with the dunnet (t-test) with Calliandra calothyrsus considered as the focus amendments. Result obtained revealed significant effect of fertilization schemes on the growth charateristics and yield component of potato. For stem diameter, plants under Calliandra calothyrsus surpassed significantly all the other fertilization schemes by at least except treated with mineral fertilizatiion and the same tendency was observed for plant's height

    Land and Soil Health Assessment in the Borneo-Sumatra Sentinel Landscape

    The LDSF was carried out at four-100 km2 sites within the Borneo-Sumatra Sentinel Landscape: Soralangun Sarolangun (SRG) and Merangin in Sumatra lead by ICRAF and Mentebah and Batang Lupar in Kalimantan (Borneo) led by CIFOR. The LDSF is a spatially stratified, randomized sampling design, developed to provide a biophysical baseline at landscape level and a monitoring and evaluation framework for assessing processes of land degradation and effectiveness of rehabilitation measures over time. Measured variables include: land cover, tree and shrub densities, tree biodiversity, erosion prevalence, infiltration capacity, along with an assessment of impact to habitat and occurrence of soil conservation structures. Soil samples were also collected (320 top (0-20 cm) and sub (20-50 cm) soil samples per site) and were processed and in Indonesia. Processed samples were shipped to Nairobi and subjected to infrared spectroscopy and wet chemistry analysis. These combined data sets will be used to assess soil and ecosystem health for the landscape in more detail

    In recognition of the importance of effective and equitable governance at the landscape scale in enhancing human and environmental well-being, we use a recently developed framework for assessing men’s and women’s involvement in local governance. These results set the stage for an ongoing examination of the success of the AgFor project in southern Sulawesi in achieving this goal. Our findings establish a baseline on gender and governance in five communities with landscapes that include forestry, agroforestry, and agriculture: Bonto Tappalang and Tana Toa in South Sulawesi, and Tawanga, Ladongi, and Wonua Hua in Southeast Sulawesi. These indicators, which we complement with ethnographic insights, fall into two categories: (1) level of public involvement and (2) skills relevant for political action, each of which is assessed for both women and men. Our findings reflect what we believe to be a comparatively equitable gender situation in Sulawesi, with hopeful prospects for enhancing women’s (and men’s) public involvement in governance. We conclude with some practical and ethnographically informed suggestions for enhancing collaboration with women and men in these (and similar) communities
