Review of seeds and seedlings systems in Uganda
Supporting the development of superior tree seed sector in Uganda can substantially contribute to improved food security and smallholder farmers’ livelihood improvement through development of the seed and seedling system. The interventions should explore variation among seed value chains with the aim of making seed programmes and policies more coherent with farmers’ practices by contributing to food security, livelihood improvement through the promotion of tree seed entrepreneurship, and biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of the forest products and services. This study is designed towards contributing to one of the outputs of T4FS Project: Developing recommendations for improving tree seed and seedling systems in Uganda
Replication Data for: Effect of Inoculating Seeds with Bradyrhizobium japonicum on the Agronomic Performance of Five Varieties of Soybean (Glycine max) in Côte d’Ivoire
Recent studies in the Nawa region of Cote d’Ivoire have indicated an acute malnutrition rate of 11.3% among cocoa producers. One of recommended actions from the studies was to diversify agriculture with nutrients rich crops. Introduction of soybean (Glycine max) cropping system could go a long way to ensure food and nutritional security in the region. The current study was conducted in two sites (Logboayo and Soubré) in the south-west of Cote d’Ivoire, to evaluate the effect of IRAT-FA3 Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain inoculum on the agronomic performance of five varieties of soybean named Doko, Canarana, V3_2013, V6_2013 and IT_235. The experimental design was randomized complete block with a split plot with inoculation as the main factor and variety of soybean as subplot treatment replicated three times. Data were collected on some yield parameters and the grain yield. Results of yield showed a highly significant effect (P<0.0001) of the site and a significant effect (P=0.0316) of the variety x treatment interaction. Highest yield was recorded at Logboayo with 1838 kg ha-1 compared to 1220 kg ha-1 for Soubre. The variety V6_2013 with a yield of 1931 kg ha-1 and good vegetative development could be recommended as elite variety for the farmers in the Nawa region
Soil Spectra and Wet Chemistry Measurements from ICRAF Soil-Plant Spectral Diagnostics Laboratory and Rothamsted Research: Africa Soil Information Service (AfSIS) Phase 2 Project Data 2014-2018 - GhaSIS
AfSIS Phase 2 was a collaborative project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). Partners included, Columbia Global Center Africa (CGCA), Earth Institute (EI), International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC), The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Rothamsted Research (RRes) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF).
The project aimed to assist national programs in four African countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania) to transition to modern agricultural research and data collection practices that were expected to result in faster agricultural development cycles.
In Ghana a total of 3,433 soil samples were collected at two sampling depths (0-20cm, 20-50cm) from Nov 2015 to Aug 2016. All the soil samples were scanned using a ZnSe Alpha I spectrometer at the Soil Research Institute of the Council of Science and Industrial Research (CSIR), Kumasi, Ghana. A subset of 210 soil samples was shipped to ICRAF Soil-Plant Spectral Diagnostics Laboratory and scanned on two spectrometers (HTS-xt and ZnSe Alpha I). The same 210 soil samples were also sent to RRes for wet chemistry analysis. The spectra data scanned at CSIR (using ZnSe Alpha I) and that scanned at ICRAF Nairobi (using HTS-xt Tensor 27) and wetchem data (analyzed at RRes) are available on Dataverse here

Baseline and end line data for the SSACP
The main output of the SSA CP was the implementation of Integrated Agricultural Research for Development (IAR4D) and assessing whether it works or not. This involved conducting research study to identify the effects of the IAR4D approach and its different components in designing and implementing research targeted at the interface of processes driving productivity gains, efficient use of resources, the care of the environment, policies and markets that would increase demonstrably the delivery of the benefits to end users and have an impact and do so in a scientific, statistically-based manner. IAR4D is an action research approach for investigating and facilitating the organization of groups of stakeholders (including researchers) to innovate more effectively in response to changing complex agricultural and natural resources management contexts, in order to achieve developmental outcomes. At the core of this organization is the establishment of innovation platforms . The objective of this was to characterize the various villages in order to be able to compare them with each other and conduct Baseline at village level on those aspects that we think might change under influence of the IAR4D activities in order to be able to compare the situation before and after the project. This was conducted in three countries, Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo
Trends, drivers of change and possible solutions to address deforestation and loss of forest habitat in the Kenya-Somalia cross-border area
Key informant surveys among stakeholders from Lamu County revealed that increase in human population is the primary factor driving the loss of tree cover in southern and central Lamu and adjacent Tana River Counties. The key informants and focused group discussion proposed the need for Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forest Service and non-governmental organizations to collaborate in conservation making sure that the local community is adequately engaged in the process; promote the formation of community forestry associations and encourage their participation in forest management and conservation; allocate land to new entrants in the area, away from the forest; sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between farmers and herdsmen to prevent encroachment into the forest; designate an area for the grazing community; support KFS and KWS to partner with private companies, to regenerate, manage and sustainably utilize forest resources; and set up a partnership between the county government and KFS to implement charcoal rules to regulate the industry in order to address and reverse the loss of biodiversity. Effective policies that halt encroachment, development of infrastructure and bushfires are required to support the conservation of the remnant forest fragments outside the protected area

Replication Data for: Improved seed germination of four savanna-woodland species: effects of fire-related cues and prolonged soaking in sulphuric acid
A study was carried out to investigate the effects of fire related cues (heat and smoke) and sulphuric acid treatments on the germination of four woody savanna species, namely, Terminalia avicennioides, Piliostigma thonningii, Piliostigma reticulatum and Prosopis africana. The heat treatment consisted of putting seeds in a preheated oven at 100,150 and 200 °C for 2.5 min. Seeds were then soaked in four concentrations of smoke solution (0 (tap water), 25, 50 and 100% smoke solutions). Parallel to smoke and heat treatment, seeds of the four species were each soaked in concentrated sulphuric acid for 2 hours and also according to the conventional soaking time of each species. Under experimental conditions, heat and smoke did not stimulate seed germination. For P. thonningii and P. africana, soaking seeds for 2 hours in sulphuric acid significantly increased germination capacity compared with conventional soaking time of 5 min. Longer soaking time reduced mean germination time. Results of this study will be useful in the establishment of these species
Replication data for: Multi-temporal Assessment of Forest Cover, Stocking parameters and Above-ground Tree Biomass Dynamics in Miombo Woodlands of Tanzania
Miombo woodlands form the widespread ecosystem in Tanzania. The ecosystem of these woodlands serves as a carbon sink and source containing majority of the above-ground terrestrial organic carbon. The study assessed forest cover, stocking parameters and above-ground tree biomass dynamics in the Miombo woodlands of Bereku and Duru Haitemba in Tanzania. The data were obtained from conventional forest inventory and remote sensing and GIS techniques. Results showed that forest cover has increased for the two consecutive assessment period of 1988 – 2000 and 2000 – 2009, mostly by higher canopy cover of 6.82% and 0.79% respectively. Stocking parameters were found to be N (1909.5±9.4), G (12.3±0.6) and V (71.0±6.8). Vegetation indices (NDVI, ARVI and ND54) were then combined with forest inventory data for computation of average above ground biomass which were found to increase from 64±6.53 t/ha, 67.8 ±5.42 t/ha and 79.218±2.75 t/ha for 1988, 2000 and 2009 respectively. The results suggest that, the Miombo woodland resources have been consistently improving over the years of assessment. This could be attributed to reduction in negative anthropogenic factors that are known to be the major cause of resources degradation in Miombo woodlands. However, this improvement may be partial as plot level information revealed higher exploitation of the dbh class of 4 – 5 cm. Increase of management effectiveness through involvement of local people under participatory forest management, strengthened bylaws and provision of other incentives might have contributed greatly to the improvement of the f
