The census also acted a baseline before interventions to strengthening farmer groups so as to monitor any changes after project interventions

Assessment of tree species diversity patterns and socioeconomic uses on agricultural landscapes a case of Western Oromia, Ethiopia
Deforestation is one of the prominent problems in developing countries. Forest destruction, land degradation and loss of biodiversity are major environmental problems in Ethiopia. A study was conducted to assess study was to characterize on-farm tree diversity, their patterns and socioeconomic uses in the study area. Four sites representing drier and moist agroecology in the sub-humid agroecology were selected. A total of 100 households, 25 from each sites, were randomly selected and assess tree and shrub species diversity and understand their socioeconomic importance. Data on tree species diversity in the homestead, crop fields and grazing/pasture land use system were collected from 100, 18 and 11 households, respectively. The result showed that a total of 82 tree species were recorded from crop fields, homegardens and grazing/pasture land use system in the study sites. The total number of tree species in the homegardens, crop fields and grazing land was 67, 52 and 29 respectively. The Shannon diversity index in the entire land use system varied from 2.11 at Uke Badiya to 2.28 at Ongobo Bakanisa, and species evenness of the entire land use system varied from 0.565 at Oda Haro to 0.593 at Ongobo Bakanisa. The Shannon diversity index in the homestead land use system varied from 1.80 at Wayu Kumba to 2.13 at Oda Haro, and species evenness of the homestead land use system varied from 0.519 at Wayu Kumba to 0.596 at Oda Haro. The Shannon diversity index in the crop fields use system varied from 1.06 at at Oda Haro to 2.44 at Ongobo Bakanisa, and species evenness of the crop fields land use system varied from 0.450 at Wayu Kumba to 0.879 at Ongobo Bakanisa. The Shannon diversity index in the grazing land use system varied from 1.53 at Ongobo Bakanisa to 1.82 at Oda Haro, and species evenness of the grazing land use system varied from 0.487 at Ongobo Bakanisa to 0.709 at Oda Haro. The density of woody species recoreded in entire land use system varied from 133 at Oda Haro to 476 at Wayu Kumba. Structurally, Eucalyptus camaldulensis was the most important tree species among the common species to the three land use system in the study sites. Homestead size area influenced the species diversity, and coversly wealth status did not influence it. From the total surveyed of tree species abundance in the study sites 85.6% estabilished through plantation and 18.4% established through natural regenerated (retention). The purposes of tree retaining/planting were 38% for live fence, 30% for firewood, 13% for income, 13% for fodder, 4% for timber and 2% for fruit production. Generally, the study showed that agricultural landscapes harbour high diversity of trees and shrubs, to which farmers attach various values to the different utilities acrued from the system

Towards an Evergreen Agriculture in Africa: Scaling-up Conservation Agriculture with Trees for improved Livelihoods and Environmental Resilience in Eastern and Southern Africa
An evergreen revolution is required in sub-Saharan Africa where increased human and livestock activities have led to the collapse of conventional soil conservation systems and increased land degradation â soil compaction, nutrient and organic matter depletion, reduced water holding capacity and microbial activity. The proposed project is premised on the hypothesis that integrating trees with conservation agriculture has the potential to enable smallholder farmers attain resilient evergreen agriculture leading to more sustainable production and agro-ecosystems, and hence contribute to poverty reduction and increased food security while enhancing the resilience of systems in the face of climate change. However, for CAWT to become a reality for smallholder farmers in SSA there are several gaps in knowledge that must be filled. Information is lacking on the drivers that have made some countries succeed in scaling up CA, the constraints they face and how they address them, lessons learnt and how to advance success to larger scale impacts. The complementary effects of trees on CA under different environmental conditions are not well documented. Other issues include knowledge on how long term access to land, availability of inputs, appropriate CA implements, adequate extension support and advice, and institutional and policy support influence adoption of CA. Empowering, adaptive and participatory, bottom-up research and extension approaches are essential to stimulate more farmers to test and adopt CA and agroforestry for sustainable production intensification. The overall goal of the CAWT initiative is to promote a continental wide adoption of conservation agriculture and agroforestry to sustain the productive potential of the natural resource base,

Replication Data for: Comparison of aboveground vegetation and soil seed bank composition at sites of different grazing intensity around a savanna-woodland watering point in West Africa
Grazing removes a plant’s aboveground vegetative and reproductive tissues and can modify the soil seed bank, potentially impacting the restoration of preferred species. Knowledge about aboveground vegetation and species composition of soil seed bank and the processes that contribute to vegetation recovery on and surrounding watering points subjected to grazing is lacking. Successful restoration strategies hinge on addressing these knowledge gaps. We assessed the effects of livestock grazing on aboveground vegetation and soil seed bank characteristics along a river bank and surrounding areas subject to different grazing intensities and draw implications for restoration. Plots (50 × 50 m) were established along five transects representing differing levels of grazing intensity. Soil samples were taken from three layers within each plot to determine soil properties and species composition of soil seed bank using the seedling emergence method. Heavy grazing resulted in the disappearance of perennial grasses, a reduction in species diversity and a decrease in soil nutrients with increased soil depth. Overall, the similarity between the extant aboveground vegetation and flora within the soil seed bank was low. The soil seed bank was dominated by herbaceous species and two woody species, suggesting that many woody species are not accumulating in the soil. With increasing soil depth, the seed density and richness declined. Canonical correspondence analyses (CCAs) showed that emerged seedlings from the soil seed bank were significantly influenced by soil carbon, organic matter, total nitrogen, total potassium and soil cation exchange capacity. This finding suggests that current grazing practices have a negative impact on the vegetation surrounding watering points; hence there is a need for improved grazing management strategies and vegetation restoration in these areas. The soil seed bank alone cannot restore degraded river banks; active transfer of propagules from adjacent undisturbed forest areas is essential

SUMMARIES: Trees on farm contribution to family livelihoods and ecosystem services in Nicaragua-Honduras Sentinel Lansdcape
A series of studies conducted as part of the long term research program in the Nicaragua-Honduras Sentinel Landscape. Since 2015 a series of studies have been developed to understand how trees on farms contribute to conserve biodiversity, ecosystem processes and improvement of people livelihood and food security. The studies have been developed along three Nicaraguan municipalities El Tuma-La Dalia, Waslala and Siuna. 120 farms and 570 land use plots have been measured considering both biophysical and socioeconomic variables. At plot and farm level data was generated to understand taxonomic tree diversity, trees production, soil characteristics, and an extensive information to describe farm management and economic indicators. Complementary, other partner institutions have been also developed studies in a subset of the 120 farms related with gender and farm perception. The present files contain a summary of the type of available data and a complete tree species list. The three files are:
