Replication Data for: Genetic and geographic variation in growth of Balanites aegyptiaca in Niger: comparing results from provenance/progeny tests in the nursery and field
Some tree improvement programs in Africa use nursery tests to investigate genetic and geographic variation in growth, but do they lead to the same conclusions as field tests? We investigated this question using provenance/progeny tests (12 provenances, 108 families) of Balanites aegyptiaca from semi-arid Niger. The nursery test included treatments for time (12–16 months) and watering regime (reduced and normal). Family variation was significant for shoot diameter (Sdia), height (Sht), dry weight (Swt) and root dry weight (Rwt) in the nursery, and for tree height at 1 and 2 years (Fht-1, Fht-2) but not at 13.5 years (Fht-13.5) in the field. Provenance variation was significant only for root/shoot weight ratio (RSwt) in the nursery. Family mean Fht-1 and Fht-2 were positively correlated with all nursery growth variables except RSwt. Provenance mean Fht-2 was positively correlated with Sht, while provenance mean Fht-13.5 was negatively correlated with Swt and positively correlated with RSwt. Family mean survival at 13.5 years was positively correlated with Swt, Sdia, Fht-1 and Fht-2. Family mean Rwt, RSwt and Fht-2 increased from the more humid western to the drier eastern locations. Most correlations with nursery growth variables were stronger at 16 than at 12 months and in the normal compared with the reduced watering regime. Results suggest that Swt and Sdia may be useful for predicting family survival in the field, and Rwt and RSwt may be useful for investigating geographic variation in growth in the field. We recommend conducting both nursery and long-term field tests
Western Amazon Village Level Baseline
This study consists of village level baseline data and other related materials generated as part of the ‘Sentinel Landscapes’ initiative. The village level baseline data was collected using four survey protocols designed by the International Forest Resources and Institutions (IFRI). The data collected is used to understand the relationship between communities, local governance and forests. Four IFRI protocols were used for this purpose:
(i) Forest Form
(ii) Settlement Form
(iii) Association Form and
(iv) Product Form.
The instruments facilitate the collection of political and institutional data at communal level for those communities that use those forests. A total of 30 villages were surveyed between September to December 2014 and January to February 2015 from 30 villages namely: Fitzcarrald, San Bernardo, Las Mercedes, Victor Raul Haya Del La Torre, Los Cedros, Tahuantinsuyo, Monte Sinai, Los Manantiales, La Torre, Baltimore, Comunidad Nativa Sinchi Roca, Caserio Bajo Shiringal, Caserio Nuevo Huanuco, Caserio Nueva Bellavistal, Caserio Nuevo Ucayali, Centro Poblado San Juan Bautista, Caserio Alto Shiringal, Caserio Villa El Salvador, Caserio Nuevo Horizonte, Caserio Buenos Aires, Soberania, El Chorro, Espiritu, Petronila, Holanda, Ucia, Buyuyo, Limon, 10 De Noviembre, Empresina

Soil Spectra and Wet Chemistry Measurements from ICRAF Soil-Plant Spectral Diagnostics Laboratory and Rothamsted Research: Africa Soil Information Service (AfSIS) Phase 2 Project Data 2014-2018 - NiSIS
AfSIS Phase 2 was a collaborative project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). Partners included, Ahmadu Bello University, Columbia Global Center Africa (CGCA), Earth Institute (EI), Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T)/Obafemi Awolowo University, International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC), Rothamsted Research (RRes) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF).
The project aimed to assist national programs in four African countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania) to transition to modern agricultural research and data collection practices that were expected to result in faster agricultural development cycles.
In Nigeria, 1,491 soil samples were collected at two sampling depths (0-20cm, 20-50cm) from two states – Kebbi and Ebonyi. The samples were shipped to ICRAF Soil-Plant Spectral Diagnostics Laboratory and scanned on two spectrometers (HTS-xt and ZnSe Alpha I). A subset of 149 soil samples was selected for wet chemistry analysis at RRes. Both the spectra data (scanned at ICRAF) and wetchem data (analyzed at RRes) are available on Dataverse here

This study consists of sex-disaggregated data and other related materials generated as part of the Sentinel Landscapes Network household survey baseline in Western Amazon sentinel site in Peru and Bolivia. A total of 677 households were surveyed in September to December 2014 and January to February 2015 from 30 villages namely: Fitzcarrald, San Bernardo, Las Mercedes, Victor Raul Haya Del La Torre, Los Cedros, Tahuantinsuyo, Monte Sinai, Los Manantiales, La Torre, Baltimore, Comunidad Nativa Sinchi Roca, Caserio Bajo Shiringal, Caserio Nuevo Huanuco, Caserio Nueva Bellavistal, Caserio Nuevo Ucayali, Centro Poblado San Juan Bautista, Caserio Alto Shiringal, Caserio Villa El Salvador, Caserio Nuevo Horizonte, Caserio Buenos Aires, Soberania, El Chorro, Espiritu, Petronila, Holanda, Ucia, Buyuyo, Limon, 10 De Noviembre, Empresina. The data consists of information on household demographics, migration, education, asset ownership, income sources, household food security, progress out of poverty, crop production and sales, livestock products, participation in credit markets, social networks, and natural resource use. In compliance with the CGIAR protocol on collecting sex-disaggregated data, approximately 50% of the respondents interviewed were women.
