    Replication Data for: Farmers' Perceptions of and Adaptations to Changing Climate in the Melamchi Valley of Nepal

    Knowledge of farmers’ perceptions of and adaptations to climate change is important to inform policies addressing the risk of climate change to farmers. This case study explored those issues in the Melamchi Valley of Nepal through a survey of 365 households and focus group discussions in 6 communities using a Community-Based Risk Screening Tool–Adaptation and Livelihoods (CRiSTAL). Analysis of climate trends in the study area for 1979–2009 showed that mean annual temperatures rose by 1.02uC and the frequency of drought increased measurably after 2003. Farmers reported increases in crop pests, hailstorms, landslides, floods, thunderstorms, and erratic precipitation as climate-related hazards affecting agriculture. They responded in a variety of ways including changing farming practices, selling livestock, milk, and eggs, and engaging in daily wage labor and seasonal labor migration. With more efficient support and planning, some of these measures could be adjusted to better meet current and future risks from climate change

    This dataset was used to apply the Stochastic Impact Evaluation (SIE) framework in the simulation of returns on investment in biophysical and socio-economic interventions. The study was carried out in a degraded dry Afromontane forest in northern Ethiopia. We used an expert knowledge elicitation approach to acquire the data from decision-makers and community stakeholders. We also developed a probabilistic model of the decision’s costs and benefits while accounting for risks and uncertainties and projected outcomes over time. The data shared here captures all the parameters considered important in the impact pathway (i.e. the expected benefits, costs, and risks) of the decision. The data can be used to examine the impact of Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) projects on livelihoods as well as landscapes

    Assessing the willingness to pay for reliable domestic water supply via catchment management: results from a contingent valuation survey in Nairobi City, Kenya

    Shortage of domestic water is a key problem in Nairobi. The Sasumua Reservoir supplies 20% of Nairobi'ÃÂÃÂs water. However, reservoir water quantity has been impacted by human activities. Landholders within the catchment have no incentives to take into account this impact in their decision. The objective of this study was to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) of Nairobi residents for reliable domestic water via catchment conservation. Data were collected through face-to-face surveys. A censored regression model was employed to estimate the WTP. Results show that monthly mean WTP of an average household is about 275 Kenya shillings; income , education, and age are the key variables affecting WTP; and lack of an appropriate institutional regime is the major public concern that could hinder implementation of market-based scheme
